John, I understand your frustration, but I did not intend to be cryptic. It seems to me that, as others have suggested, you have somehow upset your sources database. I would suggest that you remove them all, replace them as shown below, then use plf's easy_urpmi to add back external sources. I think it was Charlie who sent the following to me: quote {LOOK below the next paragraph first Anne} At the root prompt in a terminal: urpmi.addmedia --distrib file://mnt/cdrom/ with CD1 in the drive it should do what you want. You may have to use the force argument though. Thusly; urpmi.addmedia -f --distrib and so on. Note; there are indeed two (2) hyphens before distrib. You can find the available commands without digging through the man pages for urpm by using urpmi.(addmedia or some other use) -h to get a help screen. Not a lot of information there but it may remind you of the correct command you're digging for. The BASH history may also help if you have used the relevant command recently (the last 50 entries) since it's already there to be rerun. Since this is a new install you probably don't have the command in your history on that machine but one of the others.? I'm also wondering if the other command line shortcut would help at all. RE: [newbie] Postfix and POP3
No, I don't think postfix is interfering... the postmaster setting in fetchmail is for admin purposes.. any admin/error messages should go to the postmaster, which is defined in /etc/postfix/aliases to go to root.. (and you should set the root alias in there to go to your account so you get the messages.) Postfix is by far the easiest MTA to setup and run.. Sendmail is argueably the hardest. (I used sendmail back when I was a redhat user.) The only think that makes postfix slightly harder in mandrake is that postfix on mandrake runs in a chroot jail.. (meaning that you will need to manually make sure the files in /var/spool/postfix/etc match those of the same name in /etc.) Other then that postfix won't effect fetchmail at all. However, if after alot of fiddling you find postfix is just not working as it should be, remove it and reinstall... I remember on the list and experianced it myself where the postfix installed during setup was missing symlinks in its libs dir that should have been created during the packages installation, rpm -e postfix followed by rpm -ivh postfix fixed that problem. regards Franki -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of JoeHill Sent: Friday, 18 July 2003 8:11 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Postfix and POP3 On Fri, 18 Jul 2003 06:14:45 +0800 Frankie [EMAIL PROTECTED] uttered: If I might ask,, why did you load on the courier rpm?? the only time I have done that was for imap.. As far as pop3 goes, the normal imap rpm contains a perfectly good pop3 server that is widely used, well documented and easier to get working. (because you don't have to do anything other then enable it in /etc/xinetd.d ) Okay, got that. Thanks, someone recommended Courier somewhere, I can't remember...losing track...arr! Installed the imap package, and I notice in /etc/xintetd.d I already have imap, imaps, ipop2, and ipop3. Is it ipop3 I want? I looked in drakconf under services, but it was not showing as started, even after a reboot. As for fetchmail,,, do this for a test.. copy the .fetchmailrc to the root home directory and as root type: fetchmail (you might want to turn off or remove fetchmail-daemon first.) see if that gets your mail delivered properly.. if it doesn't, install and run fetchmailconf (fetchmailconf-6.1.0-1.1mdk on my mdk9 system) got that. Then run fetchmailconf in a root terminal it will then all be pretty obvious what all the settings do its a nice pretty gui. once you have all that sorted, reinstall fetchmail-daemon and move your .fetchmailrc to /etc/fetchmailrc and give that a shot. see how that does it for you.. Thanks for the attention! One question, I asked Todd below, could Postfix be interfering? Is it possible to control volumes on audio programs running at the same time - independently? For instance - the sounds made by my IM are quite loud in relation to audio being streamed on xmms. I've found that I can lower the volume of one program while keeping the volume of a CD that's playing, relatively higher, by using the PCM slider in aumix - which doesn't affect the CDs volume. All othe programs that produce sounds are affected by both the PCM and volume sliders. Any ideas? However, this card looks quite basic (does it only transfer video - no sound?). Secondly, what would be a good app to capture the video once the appropriate hardware has been purchased? Thanks! I have a WinTV-Go card installed and use streamer, a part of the xawtv package, to do my captures via the coax cable running from my vcr/set-top box/aerial. I use this setup to digitise old video recordings or as a digital vcr setup with crom scripts. This card was quite cheap and performs well enough for my needs. Hope this helps. I did post a brief outline below, it should at least get him started. Pasted for your convenience, sir: Your best bet is to boot your computer from the Mandrake 9.1 install CD and follow the easy install process, really. It's *should* be that simple. Mandrake, as you may have discovered when you installed 8.2, will not hurt your 98 install, and in fact will coexist quite peacefully. One thing to take into account is the partitioning. At that stage of the 9.1 install I would suggest choosing keep existing partitions, then format *only* the system partition(s), *not* your /home partition, that way all your personal documents in your /home will be left untouched. There may be some minor issues with config files in your home dir being incompatible with newer software, but those issues can be easily dealt with and will not hurt your system in any way. [newbie] Audio question
All other programs that produce sounds are affected by both the PCM and volume sliders. Is there a way to assign the PCM fader to control volume on *certain* audio programs but not others? Any ideas? Here is the email I posted to this list and the amavis list over a year ago.. It should still all be correct, although the download links may or may not be. (I added your new link already David, thankyou. The latest engine that should work with it is http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/engine/vsapi6510rh.tar.Z I am still running an older engine, but thats more from my lazyness then from any problem with upgrading.. besides, I suspect that when this is used with Trophie the engine probably doesn't matter alot. (at least it hasn't had any problems at all as far as I am concerned.) Technically this is all only of use to someone wanting to protect windows users on their network from getting mail virus's by installation on a linux mail server.. so if you want it to keep virus's off a linux box don't waste your time, there are none worth worrying about. regards Franki ## I have just swapped to trend viruscan for linux... I thought I'd mention all the links and stuff, so that people can search the archives here if they want to know how it is done. Here is the url to download it, ftp://ftp.antivirus.com/products/freetools/ now http://www.trendmicro.com.au/member/Products/up_other.htm (the address listed in the openantivirus readme didn't work for me, but this one did... download filescanlinux.tar (when you untar it, it has install instructions and a pdf file) If the scanner install gives you a message that it wont' install because you don't have redhat release 6, (and you do have a modern linux)I got that message with mandrake 7.2, edit /etc/issue (create it if you don't already have one, go into /etc and type 'touch issue') and put the words release 6 in it somewhere, you can delete it after install. (thats how the install program works out what version of linux you have) pretty lame method thinks me, but its a good thing that its lame if you don't have redhat. I have it working flawlessly on Mandrake and I don't think there would be much problem getting it working on other distro's. Here is the link to get the latest engine update, (the version I have now is Virus Scanner v3.1) http://www.antivirus.com/download/engines/ Go to the Interscan viruswall table and look in the linux box. download that tarball. open the tarball, and copy the file in it into /etc/iscan, overwrite the file of the same name that's in there.(it might not be a bad idea to backup the old one in case there are problems.) thats your engine updated to their latest version. If for some reason the web manager pattern update feature doesn't work, (it didn't for me, think its a isp problem, we have a strange proxy.,) go here: http://www.antivirus.com/download/pattern.asp choose the linux tarball and you have the latest pattern file. The ideas isn't to throw ALL kaazaa users in jail! What they actually plan to do is to prosecute a FEW sharers and jail them (plus fine them into the poorhouse) as examples for all the rest. This is how the U.S legal system works, when the problem is so massive the system can't deal with it--scare the hell out of all violaters to make most of them stop doing what the system doesn't want them to do. Sucks if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones picked to crucify, but very, very effective. [newbie] Creating a directory
I am trying to create a directory with a datetime stamp as part of the directory name. This is for backup purposes so I know when a directory is backed up. This is what I am trying to do on the commandline: datedir= date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S mkdir /tomcat$datedir But, all I get is /tomcat. I do a echo $datedir and it's empty. The reason it's empty is the space between the '=' and the command 'date'. So, I try: datedir=date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S but I get an error saying that it can't find command '+%Y%m%d%H%M%S'. I try putting it all in quotes, but that just echos out the command again like it's a string: datedir=date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S or datedir='date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S' echo $datedir date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S So, I tried this: date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S | mkdir and that failed. So did: date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S time.text mkdir cat time.text and: date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S time.text mkdir time.text How would I go about capturing the datetime stamp and then using that to create a directory? What is the easiest way to do this? I am running MDK 9.1. Thanks The easiest and safest way is to go to your boot directory and copy and paste vmlinuz and initrd.mdk.img to include the current name, e.g. initrd-2.4.21-0.13mdk.img. Then, instead of upgrading, you install the new kernel. When you have done that, rename them to include the version as well. You will then have to manually edit lilo.conf so that it offers you the old and the new version, using the new names of the files to tell it which one to load. The advantage to this is that if something goes wrong you can always boot back to the old kernel. Personally, I would put in an extra stanza in the lilo.conf using the new names, before I did the install. Don't forget that you have to run /sbin/lilo as root when you have made any changes, or it will still act on the old one. Anne Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Found the Source!
Hello, Maybe somebody can help me understand this. When I clicked on the src.rpm icon for the package (on a mounted CD), I was having problems (I can't remember what they were exactly now [I know, I get an F for clarity]), so I copied the RPM to disk then clicked it there, everything seemed to work (gurpmi was used automatically). There was no there there, however, nothing in /usr/src/RPM/SOURCES, and an everything already installed message when I tried it again. Acting on a friendly suggestion from this list, experimented with the rpm program. 'rpm -V foo.src.rpm' informed me that the package wasn't installed, but 'rpm -vi foo.src.rpm' [as root] gave me rpm: foo.src.rpm. No joy. 'urpmi --install-src foo.src.rpm' seems to have done the trick. Do my travails seem consistent at all? are .src RPMs handled differently? Can one 'unpack' an RPM without trying to install it, or is that a contradiction? Anyway, As always, rojo de vergüenza, Jim. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Hi Frank, Thanks. This is one comprehensive response - of course all of it way over my head - will need some close study. You'll need to install: DBI - abstraction layer for database access from perl DBD::XBase - access to DBF files via DBI - include a program to dump structure DBD::Pg or DBI:MySQL - access to database from DBI For Mysql, you may need to change DBF2PG subroutine for translating datatypes; otherwise, just rewrite the mainline for your own purposes.
