Re: Printing--AAARGH!
Rick - I don't know what settings you're using, but I can tell you the settings that get me good results with PE4 and an R800. When you go to the print window in PE4, check the box in the lower left corner that says Show More Options, open the drop down box for Printer Profile and select the one that matches the paper you're using. I have limited myself to Epson papers, so I use their canned profiles for matte, glossy, etc. In the drop down box below that select Relative Colorimetric Navigate to your printer Properties and look for a box where you can choose whether or not you want to use Image Color Management (will probably be labeled ICM) - choose to not use it. With the R800 there is an Advanced box in the lower right of the printer properties window on the Main tab - that's where the ICM choice is found for the R800. One other thing - I keep PE4 Color Settings set to ignore color gamut tags such as sRGB and AdobeRGB that are embedded in the file. I know there are others on this list that would consider this heresy, but that's what works best *for me*. I'm happy with the prints I get using this method and so are my customers. YMMV Feel free to contact me off list with any questions. -P Rick Womer wrote: I've been pretty casual about what little printing I've done to this point, but now I want things to look just the way they do on the screen. Re: OT: Epson R800 or R1800
Marnie - I have the R800 and am very happy w/it. I seldom have the need to print anything larger than 8x10, so it fits my needs well I haven't branched out into papers other than the Epson series so I can't report how it works w/other vendors papers. Epson just updated the paper profiles for the R800 so be sure to download the latest from their web site if you go w/the R800. BTW, both the R800 and R1800 use the same inkset. I've never had a problem w/clogging print heads, just be sure you turn it off using its own switch when you're not using it. Best Buy's walk-in prices are about a buck cheaper than anywhere else if they have them in stock. They may be available cheaper on the 'net. If you give OfficeMax an empty cartridge when you make a $3.00 or greater purchase they'll either give you a free ream of paper or knock $3.00 of the price of your purchase. -P [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My Epson 925 is getting a bit elderly. Re: Epson settlement questions
Bob - Did you register the printers with Epson as well as submit the claim forms? It seems that has to be done as a separate item. Any printers purchased within the claim time frame have until Nov 13 to register on the Epson site. The Settlement FAQ page has a link to Epson for registering. It also mentions that even though the court has approved the settlement, it won't be made available until the time for all appeals has expired. This doesn't answer your question directly, but you may find some answers on the FAQ page that help. Thanks Bob - I hadn't heard about the closing by Kenosha, but westbound I-94 toward Madison was closed at about the Milwaukee-Waukesha County line. However, I used Sunpak Auto DX-12R Ringflash with the PT-2D Pentax TTL module for a lot of close up work. It does not have an Auto mode, nor would that really work for close up work. So I am stuck using it in full manual mode and adjusting each exposure by trial and error. Re: PESO - Personal Space Revisited/Closeness (3 Crops)
Coming out of lurk mode - I've not commented before, content to try to learn off other's comments. However...FWIW Crop 1 does it for me. You've eliminated the empty space between you and the subject and to the right of the subject which add nothing to the photo, while still holding onto the theme of personal space, i.e. letting the subject be alone in his environment. Crops 2 3 move the theme away from the *aloneness* of the subject within his environment to concentrate too much on the subject. Neither 2 or 3, to me, convey *personal space* while crop 1 does. -P [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Okay, Bob wants more meaningful discussion. :-) So please indulge me. I got curious and I am testing a thesis. Practically no one liked Personal Space but me. I think the wastebasket and the bottom should be cropped, but I liked it. http://members.aol.com/eactivist/PAWS/pages/man1.htm Godfrey said (at the NorCal PDML meet) regarding street photography that one has to get in close (5-12) feet otherwise the photograph lacks intimacy. From what Juan and Shel have said (and the lenses they recommended, 24-55mm) they concur. I found when doing street photography, well, I can't. I have great difficulty penetrating someone else's personal space bubble. I can shoot people I know, sure, and I did all over the place. Shot PDMLers at lunch even if they didn't want me to. So I liked personal space, because I left the guy his space. And I didn't think the composition was that bad. Not great, but not that bad. I suspect, however, that it does not meet people's expectations regarding street photography and closeness (i.e. people found on the street). Therefore I have made three crops, each successively closer. (I thought it might be a bike besides the guy, but turns out it's a fence in the background. Bit distracting. Oh, well.) Of course it could just be a lousy photo. But I'd be real curious if anyone likes the crops better. And which crop do you like? If people do, it would tend to support the above thesis. Although I was not using 24-55mm; I was using a zoom. And I probably shot at 70-90mm or so. And I was about 15 feet away. I used the first technique Shel's listed to convert to BW. http://home.earthlink.net/~scbelinkoff/color2bw.html And the technique Boris showed me to sharpen after resizing to convert a RAW into a JPEG (I see artifacts so I am still not doing it right). http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/high-pass-sharpening.shtml FIRST CROP: http://members.aol.com/eactivist/PAWS/pages/space1.htm The forward arrows take you to the next crops. The back arrow on the first one takes you to the original (however, the forward arrow on the original does not return to the first crop, since the crops are in a separate loop. Re: Printing myself my photos ...
If you are content to print no larger than 8.3 inches wide, the R800 at less than 400USD is an excellent choice. And, you get the benefit of the excellent Epson printer profiles. It uses 8 cartridges that cost about 15USD each. Fortunately not all need to be replaced at the same time. On the pricier (35USD/50 sheets) premium luster paper an 8x10 still comes out to probably less than 4USD per print. -P Thibouille wrote: Very interesting discussion, really. The film was shot *during his internment!*, an incredibly difficult thing to conceive of since the mere possession of a camera by an internee, at the time, was deemed illegal, a criminal act, etc. That this was regular 8mm color film work, itself rare and unusual to see in home movies of that era. The circumstances which enabled him to obtain his movie camera, photograph the circumstances of his internment, have the film processed and actually be able to see it *while still in the internment camp* are without doubt unique. The photographer passed away last year, having used the same small spring-wound 8mm movie camera to record his life from the early 1930s up to the 1980s. I don't like to have a lot of windows open and would prefer navigating the site with forward/back buttons and direct links to other pages opening in the same window. If I want a page open separately, with Firefox I can open it in another tab. The Neon thumbnail in the upper left of the Print Gallery opens the Quicktime commercial not a print ad. My major nit pick is in regards to navigation. Before I knew it I had 5-6 browser windows open. Personally, I find websites that open each link in a new browser window frustrating. Maybe think about adding forwards and backwards navigation buttons (in the form of a typewriter backspace key perhaps?) Aside from that, I like the graphic design of the site. Yup - I know how beta releases work. The question was is anyone else having problems with it. My reply was to note the facts of how it worked for me on *my* machine. Should anyone else experience these symptoms hopefully they won't be snookered into thinking a bug has crept through their firewall, as I was. tongueincheek As a Mac user, I suspect you have little or no experience regarding the dilemna of determining if it's a buggy machine or the software that's causing the problem. In the Mac world, with only about 5% market share, who wants to take the time to write attack software which will affect so few machines. We PC users, on the other hand, need to be on our toes constantly, watching and waiting for the next round of malicious infection. This makes it difficult, sometimes, to determine, is it a bug, is it the software I just installed, or (gasp) is it the OS? We lead such interesting lives, leaping from challenge to challenge, crisis to crisis. /tongueincheek I have no doubt that when Adobe is finished there will have been many changes, both large and small, to the finished product. I'm looking forward to a later release that works well enough on my system so I can decide whether or not the workflow and results are worth my investment in the software. 1) The F and M are to match the shutter timing to the peak output of flashbulbs. F bulbs peak 5 milliseconds after ignition, while M bulbs peak at 20 milliseconds. Each is of a relatively short duration, but not as short as electronic flash. FP (focal plane)bulbs are a horse of another color as they peak after about 5ms, but have a long duration so a focal plane shutter can be used at higher speeds. 3) This looks like it takes a standard 9V battery. Re: OT - scanner question/request for opinions
I'll put in another vote for the Scan Dual IV. Have not done many slides, mostly color neg, but it does an acceptable job on slides as well. Excellent scanner for its price range. -P Tom C wrote: I have the Dimage Scan Dual IV and it does a fairly decent job and it's a step down from the the Elite 5400. Not quite as easy with Velvia as on other slide films, but even there it gives acceptable (if not fiddly) scans. Contrasty films are likely an issue to some degree or another with any consumer film scanner. It may depend on just how demanding one is. For a sub-$1000 device it's hard to expect perfection (not that anyone is). The Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/tech-data/B0001BG1SI/ref=de_a_smtd/104-8896016-6603131?ie=UTF8 It's generally available in the $300 price range. Scott, I think you'd probably find it's results far superior to scanning film on one of the lower range flat bed scanners. I don't even see a dynamic range specification offered for the 8400F when scanning film, which is probably indicative of the fact that it's better off unmentioned. Tom C. Dark areas in the slide just block out. Would anyone care to share their opinions about film scanners? My Canon 8400F just won't cut it for color slides. It's not capable of resolving shadow detail, and high contrast images are a headache. To be realistic, I'm not looking for drum scan quality. I am looking to obtain a decent scan, with at least some shadow detail, that will provide an image I can either downsize for the web, or print. Prints from the scans will never be larger than 8x10, and often will be 4x6 or 5x7. I'm not necessarily looking for top of the line, or even new; simply something that's better than my current scanner. Shel - With technology moving so quickly these days if you keep waiting for something better you'll never buy it. Unless something better is available overlapping the DS2 where you have to make a choice, or you know *for sure* there will be an improved model in the very near future, I'd say go for the DS2. Thanks för guessing, I offer you this for your consolation: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4049906 I'm starting to think it may be too difficult a quiz for the list. I was thinking that by some of the subjects, someone by chance would run into the photographer's name. He's name is not that well known. Neither is my purpose to promote him above any body else's favourite photographer. I simply have enjoyed looking at a number of his photographs as I happened to run into them. He was however at one time member of a certain group of photographers, which included some of the most influential 20th century photographers. Just like many other American photographers, he was born in Europe. Perhaps you're about to tell us that they're by Bob Capa, but they sure don't look like it. Perhaps they are by Cornell. Or, maybe they're by one of the following: Erich Hartmann, Thomas Hoepker, Erich Lessing. But that would not explain why you can put your name to them. I don't put my name to them. Photo Net automatically does that. I thought this was obvious and I clarified this in previous messages. I didn't realize anyone would even think much about it. Lasse

Re: Porta Web Gallery Creator
You can eliminate the frames by deselecting the Thumbs at the options window. This lets you generate pages with the main images only. Of course, that eliminates any index page, too. One feature that this version has that was not included in the earlier versions is autorun. You can burn the gallery to a CD, give it to someone else and when they pop it into their drive the gallery will automatically come up in their browser. -P [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 2/1/2006 8:04:15 AM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Loads pretty quick on my dial-up connection. Re: Opinions about ZX-7 MZ-7
Don't know about *strong* opinions, but a ZX-7 was my first camera purchase after the 'ex' sold all my MF equipment when I was out of town. I was pleased with it - still have it - seems reliable, the meter is accurate and operation ranges from completely point and shoot to full manual, with Av and Tv in between. Yes you can take the aperture ring off A if you want or use the body to adjust aperture. One of the big selling points for me at the time was the metal lens mount instead of plastic. Other features that attracted me were single or continuous drive mode and the ability to take multiple exposures on a single frame. Paul Unca Mikey wrote: My only issue with the *ist is that they recently discontinued it. I've had zero problems with it, very reliable, just curious about another body, separation anxiety, y'know? GGG Your suggestion is good, but... The few newer bodies appear pretty flimsy (plastic mounts, limited features, etc). I almost always shoot Av, and my favorite lens is the DA 40mm (no aperture ring), which drastically limits my choices. As near as I can tell from pictures and the manual, the ZX-7 is the only Pentax SLR that allows Av mode using either the aperture ring on the lens or a selector on the body. And it goes for about half the price of the *ist. I was just curious if anyone had any strong opinions, pro or con, about that particular model, since I haven't read much about it. *UncaMikey -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Backups should be reliable.
