I had the same problem. I did a search on the 'newbie' archive and was able to find the problem. From what a gathered its a problem with one of the desktop files, where for some reason it's no being deleted correctly and everytime you load up your desktop it keeps loading up those gmc apps.

Package Manager works just fine. BUT: After upgrading a kernel, you need to go in and fix /boot. Package Managere doesn't do that, and it will leave you pretty much broken. Once you've fixed /boot, check /etc/lilo.conf for validity, and then run lilo to set the changes. Your next reboot

With many things, that's absolutely right. However, the kernel is an exception to that. Think about it. The kernel is loaded at boot time. It IS linux. To run the new kernel, you must reboot. PS: Just a hint, before you do that, check /boot. You'll find borken links, and a missing initrd.img.
