I have actually come across this problem before, what I had to do is boot into another operating system and delete the file. There could be a flag in the table that is preventing it from being deleted, Linux will not clear this flag but Windoze can (since you said it was VFAT and not ext2fs).

To me the easiest way to share a connection on a Win machine with a Linux machine is to use DHCP. You will need a NIC in each machine and I would suggest a hub (both you would most likly still be able to use when you upgrade to DSL). You will need to install MS Family Network on your Win machine.

If you can view a list of directories in Explorer then the CD was written correctly. Are you running the Mandrake installation from your CD-RW drive or from a CD-ROM drive? If you are using a CD-ROM drive it is possible, especially if it is an older drive, that the drive can not read CD-RWs.
