configuration issues with Siemens MC35i

2008-02-07 Thread Peter Salvage

Hi all

I've tried searching the archives and found lots of useful info but I'm
not having success.

I'm running 1.4.0 on Debian

Here's part of my kannel.conf:

group = core
admin-port = 13000
admin-password = blah
admin-allow-ip = 127.0.0.1
log-file = /tmp/kannel.log
log-level = 1
access-log = access.log
# Smsbox related
smsbox-port = 13001
box-allow-ip = 127.0.0.1
store-file = kannel.store
sms-incoming-queue-limit = 0

udp-deny-ip = *.*.*.*
include = /etc/kannel/modems.conf

group = smsc
smsc = at

modemtype = siemens_mc35i

init-string = AT+CSMS=1
speed = 115200
enable-hwhs = AT\\Q3
need-sleep = true

I can communicate with the modem fine using minicom, with hw flowcontrol
off, and speed set to 115200.

When I fire up bearerbox, this is what I get:

Re: configuration issues with Siemens MC35i

2008-02-07 Thread Peter Salvage

Hi Tommi

My notebook doesn't have a serial port so I'm using a USB to Serial port
converter.

Peter

Tommi Linna wrote:

serial cable and that information should be used in Debian also.

Try setting device = /dev/ttyUSB0 to device = /dev/ttyS0.

BTW, I'm having problems with Siemens modem. For some reason it seems to
freeze computer totally occasionally (couple of times a week). Any body
with Siemens MC35i had similar issues?

Re: configuration issues with Siemens MC35i - SOLVED!

2008-02-07 Thread Peter Salvage

Hi all

Got it working...my config was fine.

The problem was the USB to serial converter; it didn't do HW flow
control. The clue was that I couldn't attach to the MC35i using Minicom
with HW flow control on, only off.

However it appears that Kannel expects HW flow control(?) so I jimmied
together a serial cable with pins 1,4 and 6 shorted together, and it worked.

Now to play :-)

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice, guys!

Regards,
Peter

ATS18 #Extended error reporting.
AT+IPR=0#Autobauding on the PC interface
AT\Q3 #Hardware flow control
AT+CBST=0,0,1 #Autobauding on the Air interface
ATD*99***1# #Dial command

We had a lot of PPP authentication OK reports, but it would immediatly fall out.
The only dial string that worked was the *99***1# all the others fell out.
Suspect that the crucial AT cammands are the CBST and the AT\Q3.

Hope this helps.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Advice on how to get to 100-250k views a day (quickly)?

2007-11-13 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
So what we should really be asking is, How do I get on TV?

BRB...loading pistol.

I agree with most of this though. When I started doing this a few years
ago, that question would have sounded like the antithesis of what everyone
was trying to accomplish, trying to break into a walled garden. Now it
sounds more like a utilitarian question, like How do I get my enclosures to
show up in iTunes? That said, the television world has a lot to lose by
letting the huddled masses in under their tent. I doubt the TV+Netvideo
marriage going to happen as soon as people think.

have hard drives and such). The audience is there. It's hard, but the
audience is there. Will we collectively be willing to do the hard work
to get the audience, or do we want the half-assed tech ethic of 'slap
 that crap together and pray'.

That said, I believe certain content has advantages over others. Do a
show about gaming, sex, cars or any of the 'religious' topics, and it
will help. I'd love to know what the Escapist's video 'Zero

Want to make money and get a huge audience? Do a Justin Timberlake

I also will support (but not like) the idea that hot chicks and TV

course there will be exceptions, and we can deconstruct all day, but
when we do that, we're not quite normal, are we? When Amanda and
Rocketboom split, you could almost scientifically see the gaps in how
the content (and her) were perceived based on closeness to the

I'm still waiting for good hi-definition content come out of this

my ass in front of my home theater (this goes totally against the
indiepunkish ethos of 'well I don't owwn a television', etc) and
having my ears tantalized in 7.1 surround sound.

There are three types of content I adore-- Video, video and sometimes
video. Sometimes it's on YouTube, sometimes it's buried in a forum
someplace, and other times, it comes from a TV studio or DVD (my god I
 love Entourage, don't you?).

We are the Content Creation Class-- we're kinda different than
everyone else (read: consumers). But damn, how does your audio podcast
compete with the non-interface of turning on satellite radio in the

Re: [videoblogging] Re: everyday video in November

2007-11-06 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
Even though most of the shows on their front page could be labeled internet
tv, that doesn't make them any less independent than your personal vlog, or
Rupert's, or Schlomo's, or mine. I have Bullemhead.com to show my friends
(like you) things from my life, things that catch my eye or ear. I don't
care if only a handful of people see it, as long as it's the right handful.
Wreck Salvage was born from a desire to share our work with a greater
audience. We don't have any funding, corporate or otherwise. So how is our
show less independent than a personal vlog? Not trying to start shit, just
interested in your reasoning.

Have you or anyone emailed the blip folks about promoting the NaVloPoMo?
I'm sure they are open to suggestions, as that's pretty much been their M.O.
from day one. You catch more flies with honey, etc.

Thanks for the compliments Brook :) You are no slouch in this. You are

Here is something that I find troublesome...

There are so many fantastic videos being created for navlopomo and the
majority of them are being hosted on Blip. I just went to the Blip
front page and I see not a mention of any NaVloPoMo videos on the
front page. Nothing. I see that Cooking with Jack Black is a hit
 though. Wow. Really...just...wow.

It saddens me that Blip has gone the way of promoting Internet TV as
their base and bypassed the independent videobloggers who, were really
the ones that got them the attention when they first started up. Oh
sure, occasionally Blip will feature a non internet television
creator. The ratio is very lopsided though.

I'm sorry Blip. I really don't want to point fingers at you but...you
are the ones that host my videos. I chose you then because I believed
in what you were doing...back then. I'm troubled with what you've
become. Alas, I guess you have to follow the money or promote where
 the money may be.

So, when we, the Independents have been tossed to the side in favor
of shows and internet tv, posts like yours Brook inspire me to
continue promoting the people who do this fantastic creative work
 and push the boundaries.

Yes, everyone, please check out the amazing things that people are
 doing for NaVloPoMo. http://nablopomo.ning.com/group/videobloggers

A video posted every day of this month. 30 videos from each person
involved. That's a massive amount of content. Personal content! Let's
see an Internet TV show try and do that.

Subscribe to the people. Get to know the people. Befriend the people.
 Support the people.

 Hi everyone:

I've been making some changes to AMWT TV today and figured some of you
would wanna know what they are.

 * AMWT TV now has a LIVE show - Thanks to our friends at BlogTV
 * There's now a banner at the top of the page (It ain't much, but it's
 better than what I had :) )
 * An Embedded Pod-O-Matic Player has been added

I will soon change the screen captures of Episodes 2 3 to be more in
line with the rest of the podcast (In other words - The Quicktime
player skin) I'll also (If possible) switch the FeedBurner URL to the
Blogger RSS Feed. If successful, it will eliminate the redundant need
to post to a Pod-O-Matic page I don't even use (Much less PROMOTE)
 anyway.

Of course, the podcast directories will have to be updated, but many
of them have spiders anyway so they can usually spider something like
 a FeedBurner URL quite easily.

I have also put up a poll asking you (Since you *are* my VIEWERS - At
least I'd like to *think* you are :) ) how often do you think I should
post a show. It'd be appreciated if you could answer it. :)

I also did a video today and it'll be posted before I go to bed
tonight (The embeddable Flash version from BlogTV is already up, but
that's only a placeholder till the downloadable version is posted). I
should also have Part One of a Two Part video of my first recorded
clip outdoors (The whole thing is almost 90 minutes long) that I did
while I was amongst the offline world with my $100 Digital
Camera/Video Recorder. I'll get that posted and retrodated tomorrow.

In the meantimeThat's all the news there is from here.

 Cheers :D

That will export an RSS feed of all entries in your database.

or you can use WP Database Backup for more control over what gets included:

2007-10-01 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
It seems to have worked well, and distributed our video across 20 or so
different platforms, including the ones we were previously uploading to by
hand, Blip, Vimeo, Youtube, Google, Yahoo, etc.. The downside is that each
*upload* costs $0.99, not each video. So if you wanted to upload a video to
all 50 sites they support, it would cost 50 bucks.

Pretty pricey, but a useful service.

The first 99 cents you spend buys you 25 extra uploads, then they're 99
cents a piece after that.

If it would save me a couple hours which is what I spend uploading now, that
would be well worth a buck. My time is worth slightly more than $0.50 /
hour.

Though like I said, I haven't tried it yet so I can't really recommend it.

Also the no attention-span required style is what is required for
anything that's trying to be commercial.

Ugh, I hope that isn't true. Most stuff I watch, commercial or otherwise,
requires some attention and critical thinking.

There's infinite choice immediately available competing for people's
attention. If you're not constantly engaging, constantly challenging
your audience to pay attention and going so fast they need to rewatch,
 you're going to lose them.

That's definitely true about the infinite choice, but I'm not sure the
A.D.D.-ing of the world is such a great goal.

I understand it's trendy to use jump cuts and MTV-style hyperactive edits,
but it's not a necessity. I also understand that so far, in the extremely
brief time that web video shows have been able to be called successful, many
of them use this particular style. But that is definitely not a reason to
say it's necessary, or that you'll lose your audience otherwise. To each
his own.

[videoblogging] Vloggercue + Deathmatch + etc

2007-08-03 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
I'm not sure if it's the heat, or apathy, or teetotaling, or what, but I've
heard awful little chatter about the latest Deathmatch. I'm wondering if
the theme is too difficult? Too convoluted?

http://vlogdeathmatch.blogspot.com/

The deadline for being included in the Pioneer screening is Sunday
(..sunday..sunday).

Also, I'm wondering if we're going to have enough material to fill up the
entire hour of our screening at the Pioneer. We'll cross that bridge when
we come to it I guess. There is a backup plan in place anyhow.

Also, Vloggercue is next weekend. Come one, come a few:
http://vloggercue.pbwiki.com/

Also, I adapted The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka into an animated featurette
played by robots:
http://www.rocketboom.com/stories/rb_07_aug_03

These are the things that have been on my mind. I've also been thinking
recently about the history of clothing, specifically if it has been in
existence long enough to have affected human evolution. Some scientists say
the earliest clothing dates back 540,000 years. Is that long enough to
alter a species' evolution? I was wondering if the human waist has
developed fewer capillaries and nerves due to constant contact with belts
and waistbands. Probably not. Also, is it possible that African skin has
more melatonin because they wore less clothes than peoples of other
continents, and therefore more UV radiation? I guess I can look this stuff
up. Either way, I've pretty much decided that the fewer clothes I'm forced
to wear, the better I feel.

2007-08-01 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage

If In 25 years it is the trend for people to gather at venues wher
videoblogs are played on giant screens, would videobloggers think this
was commercial use and that they are entitled to some small cut?

No.

At this point my own philosophy is settling on the total respect for
whtaever the particular content cretor wants. If theyve signed up to a
system that uses draconian methods, more fool them in the long run. If
they want all media to be free and believe in a true creative commons
of works, then hoorah. If they believe in something else then I'll
respect that too, though I personally have a special place in my heart
for those who want to push freedom further than most.

Me too... I have a special place in my heart for those who want to push
anything farther than most. Creativity, freedom, even obscenity (for fuck's
sake). One of the biggest misses in videoblogging is the lack of people
pushing limits, and I don't exclude myself.

The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who
really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

Re: [videoblogging] Blank tape detected in Premiere

2007-07-30 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
I've had that problem before too. Are you using Scene Detect during
capture? That could be part of the problem. It tries to add a few extra
frames in between stop points during batch captures, and it usually fails.

Also it helps if you use the same brand of DV tape stock all the time, as
different brands use different lubricants which can gum up the heads in your
cam. I didn't know this until it was too late with my last Panasonic cam,
and it started getting the blank tape detected error in Premiere. If
you've already cleaned the heads, just start using the same tape brand from
now on and it might fix itself.

When I dump a tape to Premiere, it sometimes stops in the middle of the
capture process and says capture stopped because blank tape was

a blue moon. Lately, though, it's been happening a lot. It seems to crop
up once every two minutes of footage. The footage itself is there, and if
I back up to the beginning of the scene and capture again, everything's
fine. This is becoming an annoyance, though, and I'm afraid it might be a
sign of impending equipment failure, which is something I can't afford.
The camera itself is only about a year old, and it hasn't seen heavy,
regular use until about last March when Greentime began.

Does anyone have any experience with this error? Is there something I
need to do to help fix this? I tried my head cleaner on my camera, but to
 no avail.

[videoblogging] Personal Vlogger clips

Hello all,

I'm working on a personal video blogger documentary project, and I need your
help. I'm looking for short, captivating clips of personal vloggers that
have grabbed your attention.

They need to be short, because I'm editing a bunch of them together into a
3-minute trailer. I'm thinking 5-10 seconds each. I'd like to get about 20
of them and tie them all together.

Bonus points if they are talking about vlogging in the clip.

I'd be very grateful for any links you could come up with.

Thanks.

(P.S. For this project we're defining personal vlogger as someone who
talks to the camera or uses voice-over to narrate personal accounts,
although generally I think that term includes many more styles.)

[videoblogging] The History of What My Dog Can't Hear

2007-07-02 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
Back in town, re-reading the Podtech v. Bui thread. I just want to talk a
little more about copyright and the ownership of art, as I felt compelled
to scratch Mr. Rice's mosquito bite about being trollish ;) I don't mean
to start an argument here, I just need to understand how people feel about
the things they are making, and I want you all to understand how I feel.

A friend of mine wrote an essay on music a couple years ago called The
History of What My Dog Can't Hear:

http://www.geartekcorporation.com/texts/essay2.html

The essay is about changing the way we perceive music, and accepting it as
something that is not ownable:

The ownership or authorship of anything is a deception, surely. But I take
no issue with the ownership of objects in the world, like a broom or a drum
for example. Music however, is a thing not in the world, and the present
deception of its ownability places limits on our consciousness. My
motivation here is not to sell iPods. If this near biblical manifesto-mill
can be accused of having any agenda at all, it is merely to assist an
already rising consciousness. Neither are these paragraphs commandments or a
bugle call to what we need to realize or do. We didn't need to be able to
hear tone in music or need to be aware of its color - it's just the way
music is happening to us, rising on a path like the moon. Some astronomers
can predict the path of the moon, and surely artists are those astronomers.
I understand those who are skeptical or scoff at this as pompous and
irrelevant. After all, when you look at the moon, the moon looks still.

He feels the same way about music as I do about my videos, and at the end he
says, EXTRA CREDIT: Re-read this entire essay but replace the word music
with the word images.

Re-reading it I realized that I unconsciously lifted metaphor directly from
him. Blatant plagiarism! I've already informed him and a check is in the
mail.

Because music is a matter of shifting consciousness and not worldly sound, a
person can't claim to own or control music any more than they can claim to
own or control a quadrant of mist over a lake.

PS. Here is a free album of amazing midi-synthesizer and home-made
electronic instrument music by the author of that essay:

already rising consciousness. Neither are these paragraphs
 commandments or a
bugle call to what we need to realize or do. We didn't need to be
 able to
hear tone in music or need to be aware of its color - it's just
 the way
music is happening to us, rising on a path like the moon. Some
 astronomers
can predict the path of the moon, and surely artists are those
 astronomers.
I understand those who are skeptical or scoff at this as pompous and
irrelevant. After all, when you look at the moon, the moon looks
 still.

He feels the same way about music as I do about my videos, and at
 the end he
says, EXTRA CREDIT: Re-read this entire essay but replace the word
 music
  with the word images.

Re-reading it I realized that I unconsciously lifted metaphor
 directly from
him. Blatant plagiarism! I've already informed him and a check is
 in the
  mail.

Because music is a matter of shifting consciousness and not worldly
 sound, a
person can't claim to own or control music any more than they can
 claim to
own or control a quadrant of mist over a lake.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?

2007-06-29 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
I've been surprised by all the vitriol. I'd have thought that Podtech would
have built up a couple brownie points with y'all by now, what with their
paying you real money, and hosting awards shows for us all to circle-jerk
at.

Maybe the lesson here is to get paid First? Once you put something online,
you don't own it anymore than you can claim to own a rainbow hovering above
your house. It's in the public consciousness, part of the firehose of
experiences that we all consume, transitory experiences. I think especially
in this case since it's a digital photo of Casey McKinnon, if anyone has a
claim to some money it would be her. If someone else made a recording of a
song I was playing, and royalties were to be paid for that recording, I'd
likely be the one to receive them. But I wouldn't demand them. Something
just sits wrong with me when I hear about people billing other people for
services that they weren't hired to provide.

Creative Commons is pretty silly, not as silly as traditional copyright, but
pretty silly.

I'm heading out of town now so I won't be able to respond to any shit slung
my way for a while :)

P.S. Lan, you're a badass photog, I'm glad I found your work via this mess.

[videoblogging] Number of videobloggers?

2007-06-28 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
Does anyone have an educated guess as to the number of current videobloggers

Youtube was around 500,000 users last spring. But I have no idea how many
of those are actual posting videos.

Google and Technorati have little to say on this topic.

psss I added some YouTube info in the history timeline. YouTube is the
biggest thing to happen to videoblogging ever ever ever ever. There should
be a whole section on it, but a YouTuber should write it, not me.

Sorry, I wrote there was a time and Aerosmith just started spewing out
 all over the place.

Anyhow, the entry has been the heart of some virile dispute in the past.
I don't think the collective we should be policing it to ensure it's
homogenous with this group, but I do think we should all edit add/subtract
as we see fit, whenever we desire.

For example, right now I'm going to remove the V tech stuff. Not really
vlogging-related. Also going to remove the Vloggies reference, as that was
an awards show (self-congratulatory bs is not covered in the charter)
sponsored by a company, and not directly related to the definition of
 videoblogging by any means.

ps I think Irina et al are good peoples, but I have serious concerns with
the idea of an awards show for videoblogging. They're pretentious and
pointless, and belong on the wall of real estate offices, as Seinfeld said
 earlier this year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_OqvUbBNA4

pss There's only 2 mentions of YouTube in the entire entry, and they are
 in passing. Pretty insular.

Could talk to Eric Skiff and Chris Brogan, see how they managed to get the
New Yorker for PodCampNYC. A mixture of donations and sponsorships, I'm
pretty sure.

That said, I can help out, but I can't plan it. I have too much other stuff
going on, so if people in DC have the resources and the time and energy to
plan it out, I'll go there. Same for any other city within reason (cheap
airfare from hubs).

I will say though that if NYC is voted for, I have a pretty good space for a
party. I'll donate my loft and roof for a pre or post vcon barbecue. House
parties are lots cheaper than bar parties. $10 a head times 100 people or
so buys a good amount of food and drinks.

If NYC isn't voted in, we're throwing a Vloggercue here anyway. June 23rd
is the date a few of us have agreed upon, so mark your calendars regardless.

Google calendar can do that. You can set it to send txt reminders an hour

If they become larger, like a tapeworm say, and start causing health

Re: [videoblogging] NBC researching brain activity

2007-03-22 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
I had a very similar job. We stuck new spots in old shows, showed them to a
group of respondents, and administered surveys afterwards to test the
effectiveness of the commercial. One of my duties was to paste the new
commercials in over the top of last week's batch. So I would fast-forward
through 10 minutes or so of a discarded ABC pilot from 1987 about a female
mayor's office in a big city, cut in a commercial for Axe body spray (not
that, but something similar), then fast-forward to the next commercial
break.

When I would leave for lunch, I would get a headache as soon as I stepped
out the front door from all the natural light and non-fast-forwarded
reality. That lasted about 6 months.

Interesting thing I learned from that job is that almost every big brand
commercial you see has gone through similarly rigorous testing for several
months before they actually air it. They test the first draft, make
changes, test again, make changes, on and on until they get they're desired
% of positive responses from the testing groups.

Think about that next time you're forced to sit through a shitty commercial.

Long live TiVo.

Then I had to fast forward to the next commercials. So all I saw all
day was high speed MTV and adverts. It was like A Clockwork Orange.
I did it for a week before I quit. After the third day, I walked out
onto Oxford Street and suddenly threw up on their doorstep.
Still, it cured me of my MTV habit.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: how to do stop motion

2007-03-15 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
I've tried a few different programs for stop motion, and they're all very
similar. Honestly, as long as they have onion-skinning you're golden, and
every one I've used has that feature. The biggest challenge with this stuff
is patience.

One thing that helped me out immensely was this article about basic
animation principles:
http://www.stopmotionanimation.com/handbook/9.htm

The biggest, most helpful tip for me was #5: Ease-In Ease-Out.

Also alternately known as *Slow-in* and *Slow-out*, or *Acceleration* and *
Deceleration*. Whatever you call it, it refers to the tendency things have
to start and stop moving gradually. Example; a man is going to sprint (he
got tired of playing ball I guess, or maybe he hit a home run). He doesn't
just hit full speed instantly and then stop on a dime - unless he's the
Roadrunner! He'll build up speed gradually and then slow down gradually at
the end. The same applies to any object set in motion... a car, a bird, or
 even a bouncing ball.

Applied to stop motion, this means when something is moving from one place
to another, its first few movements should cover very short distances, grow
incrementally bigger, then incrementally smaller again as it reaches it's
stopping point, ending up with a nearly unnoticeable movement before it
completely stops.

Here's my latest attempt at this frustrating but incredibly fun art form
(may not be safe for work, depending on where you work):

*Good luck,
AQ

Sports are helping keep big cable/sat companies afloat I think. If it
weren't for DirecTV's awesome sports packages like Sunday Ticket and the

want on their website. I'd miss out on shows like South Park and Good Eats,
but I'm sure I could find those online too.

I don't see sports moving to the net anytime soon though, because of the
sheer amount of live production work it takes to make a successful
broadcast.

VOD might even become law at some point. I unsubscribed from cable tv

Interesting that this announcement comes on the heals of Viacom
saying that they are going to create a site where people
can leagaly mash up their work...Ah...corprate politics at it's
   finest.

NEW YORK - MTV owner Viacom Inc. said Tuesday it has sued YouTube and
its corporate parent Google Inc. in federal court for alleged
copyright infringement and is seeking more than $1 billion in
 damages.

Viacom claims that the more than 160,000 unauthorized video clips
from its cable networks, which also include Comedy Central, VH1 and
Nickelodeon, have been available on the popular video-sharing Web
   site.

The lawsuit marks a sharp escalation of long-simmering tensions
between Viacom and YouTube. Last month Viacom demanded that YouTube
remove more than 100,000 unauthorized clips after several months of
talks between the companies broke down.

In a statement, Viacom lashed out at YouTube's business practices,
saying it has built a lucrative business out of exploiting the
devotion of fans to others' creative works in order to enrich itself
   and its corporate parent Google.

Viacom said YouTube's business model, which is based on building
traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly
illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws.

With stills, just import them into your editor of choice and lower the
length of each pic in your slide show...which is really what you are

For mac, I use iStopMotion, which is a really easy program to make

I made a video for webshots about stopmotions. You can see it here:

Re: [videoblogging] Collaboration again

2007-03-12 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
We use Spin for collaborations. Usually one of us will have an idea,
collect some video/audio/text, assemble a rough cut or sketch, compress it,
and then drag all the media files into our Wreck Salvage Spinxpress group
and hand it off to whomever you are working with at the time. A lot of the
time we'll be on IM with each other during the process, coaching,
suggesting, brainstorming, about what the video needs, how to achieve
certain things.

As for the text-to-video idea, Serra from headsoff made this thing last
year, which is pretty sweet:

The flash meeting chat that Harold highlighted had some interesting

I guess its a subject that comes up quite often here, and yet I never
ending up recording much progress on that front. I know a stock answer
has become 'use spinxpress' and clearly it must work and be good
because it comes recommended by some people who will ahve used it for
such purposes. As I havent used it myself I remain pretty ignorant
about exactly what it offers beyond peer2peer filesharing, anybody got
a few moments to elaborate on how it fits into the process, and what
sort of collaborative processes fit well with this tool?

Anyway I guess there are all sorts of non-technical reasons why
collaboration can be a challenge. Having time, being in sync with the
others, communicating ideas that may be hard to put into words,
differing aims of different people, different inspirations etc, can
 all get in the way.

I would guess that maybe some of these hurdles could be overcome with
something similar to the youtube phenomenon - tools that work in the
browser easily, and a critical mass of users and content. Im quite
interested in systems where there would be millions of very short
video fragments available in the system, and peple could construct
vidoes from these and their own pieces. I am interested in 'video'
type content being created semi-automatically from other sources (eg a
text-to-video thing based on keywords that relate to the clip fragments).

Ive run out of time to waffle now, any thoughts on this or completely
different aspects of the collaboration thang?

 Cheers

I have a couple theories as to why we were booted, but my evidence is all
circumstantial so I'll refrain from hypothesizing. We're looking into it

Well, I took that javascript swap out because it's buggy as hell and just
went with different calls to CSS for handheld and Screen, with a capital

The two CSS import rules in the main page's header are still there, because

Yeah, lots of Windows Mobile devices out there now, hence the .wmv link.
And yeah our .mov's are totally iPoddy.

I loved Home Movies. Very soothing for some reason, even with the quick

I do have some VHS tapes from the early 80's of some of my t-ball games, and
one of me standing in front of the TV singing Rainbow Connection along with
Kermit. I need to have my parents send me those before they decompose.

PS, if you stick a bit of javascript in your embed code, when someone clicks
in the box all the text is automatically selected.

Like this:

input name=embed type=text value=some code that embeds a video
onClick=this.focus(); this.select()

Just learnt that the other day and was momentarily impressed with it.

Re: Please help this newbie

2006-05-26 Thread Salvage

Thanks Luke for your reply. I use a VPS so I guess mod_python can be
installed cause I have root access.
I am happy to hear that I can integrate the templates that i want.

I understand when you say I cant build those sites without having
programing skills but are there no modules that are already pre-built
like print this article, comment on this article, send by email, most
popular etc. That one can call with some django tags or something like
that? Forgive me if i sound so *not knowledgeable*. In a lot of those
news sites, I have seen, I can notice some things they have in common,
like podcasts, vodcasts, video files as well as those things I
mentioned above. Are there prebuilt modules or scripts that can be
called with the django tags into templates? Please indulge this newbie
a little. :-)
Thanks a lot

Please help this newbie

2006-05-26 Thread Salvage

I have never coded in python and even my knowledge of php is
limited(though I can install any script with php). But I see from the
news sites that are built with django, that it has all that i need for
newspaper/media sites. I want to know if I django can be installed in a
hostspace with just an ip like http://22.234.67/~newssite . So that i
can make all the mistakes, try to learn how to use before moving to
qualified domain names. I also wish to know if I can use template
designs from dreamweaver or predesigned from templatemonster to
integrate into django.
Please, the tool am using now for news site is limited compared to what
I see with the news sites built with django. Also how easy is it to use
after installation? I also can pay a token for installation and a
little tweaking(I really dont have much but am willing) when am ready
to host in fully qualified domain.
Please , someone should endeavour to help .Thanks

[PHP-WIN] PHP execution error

2002-03-14 Thread Peter Salvage

Hi all

NT4 Server SP6 IIS4

I installed PHP 4.0.6 according to the instructions posted on php.net and ran
the ubiquitous hello world script to verify that all was working as
advertised.

My webserver rsponded with a popup window as follows:

snip
php.exe - invalid current directory

The process cannot switch to the startup current directory z:\inetpub\www\www84.
Select OK to set current directory to C:\WINNT, or select CANCEL to exit.
/snip

I've checked the archives of the list, read through the install/config section
of the man pages, but I can't see what I've done wrong.

Could someone please let me know where I screwed up please?
:-)
Cheers,
/wiZZ

Sometimes, Off Topics are really worth, but from the last 60 mails I have
received from this list, more than 40 were Off Topic. So, I think there´s
something wrong. Why don´t we create another list, just for Off Topics ?

Alternatively, insert OT as the first characters in the subject which will
then allow folk that have filtering ability in their mail clients to filter
posts containing the phrase OT in the subject to the folder of their choice.

Re: [IMail Forum] Should IMail have its own server?

2001-04-03 Thread Peter Salvage

Yes, without a doubt, give Imail it's own server...

service. In general, should IMail have its own dedicated server, with
minimal other processes running on it?

Depends...if the msg load isn't too heavy, you can always run Primary DNS
service on the mail box as well. I wouldn't run anything else, but it can
actually shorten DNS resolution times if DNS is run on the same box.
Nameservers don't have much of a "footprint" anyway.
