Re: [newbie] Re: Dual Boot & Dual HDD
I'm on my work PC, and hence don't have access to Linux for confirmation of this, but I think there's a way to solve your problem in Mandrake Control Center. There should be a "Boot" category, or something similar, that you can click on in MCC. Under this you should find an icon labeled "Boot Loader." Click on this to make configuration changes to LILO or GRUB. I *think* one of the changes you can make is which mount point each OS choice in the list boots. This is probably what you want to change to fix this particular problem. Disclaimer: I'm not a guru, just a Windows power user trying my hand at something new. Take my advice with a half-shaker of salt and call me in the morning. ;-) -- Adam Mark Stosberg wrote: On 2004-09-01, SnapafunFrank <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Now, when I tried to go the update route with Mandrake10, lilo showed me boot options for partitions that had no OS on them, ie the FAT partitions. After upgrading to 10.0, selecting the "windows" option produces a black screen with a blinking cursor. However, if I go to BIOS and tell it to boot off of the Windows drive first, Windows boots fine and appears to be undisturbed. I believe he tried switched to grub and got the same result. Is there any way to make lilo or grub boot Windows again? It's on a second drive all by itself. Mark Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Mandrake 10.1 Isos
On the off chance that your Linux install is now hosed, there are some md5sum checkers out there for Windows as well: Command Line: www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/using_md5sums.html#win GUI Freeware: http://snipurl.com/9l54 GUI Open Source: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=16882 The first GUI app looks like it may be a bit more friendly and featureful than the open source version, but I honestly didn't look that closely. -- Adam Alexander Ruoff wrote: I have a problem with the Iso-Images I have for 10.1. I downloaded them with Linux and burned them with K3B. However, when updating the 2nd CD failed. First I thought that it must be something related to the update from 10.0 to 10.1 and made a clean install but than the 2nd as well as the 3rd CD failed. I downloaded two new Isos with Windows and burned them with Nero, but again, the 2nd CD failed. I managed to install 10.1 nicely within a couple of hours installing everything via urpmi (it was fun even though time consuming due to the fact that I needed gcc to compile the 855wrap and had to remember all the names of the software I wanted). Anyway, I still want to find out why those Isos I made didn't work or if this problem happened to some other people as well? Regards Alex One place to start is to compare the md5sum's of the original iso on the ftp site with the one you have downloaded to your machine, and then compare that to the cd you just burnt. I have had troubles with the cd burn gui's so I just use the commandline. cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc path_to_file.iso /dev/hdc is the path to my burner replace with what ever path yours is. Theres options for speed= and -v verbose mode, etc. read manpage for cdrecord if interested. Mike Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] downloading Firefox
Maryse, I recommend getting the download offered at the Firefox home page, www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/. I've tried both, and I find the "official" version from the Mozilla Foundation much better for a few reasons. First, it's a smaller file and therefore a faster download. The package available from contrib via urpmi is nearly 30MB, while the file from mozilla.org is only about 8.6MB. Second, I could never get the contrib package to integrate successfully with GNOME. I used the preferred applications control panel (I'm guessing at the name -- presently on my work PC, which is Windows) to set the preferred web browser to the command line for the new Firefox install, followed by %s for the web address. It never did work, though. The urpmi package also seemed a little slower than the official download. Overall, I think the Linux download from mozilla.org offers the best solution for you. You don't need to be root to install it since it can be installed into your home folder, and setup is taken care of by a user-friendly installation wizard. Good luck, Adam M.Schild wrote: Although, urpmi generally isn't much use for someone on modest download speed capability like Maryse. so what do you suggest? Maryse

[newbie] C programs and graphical environment - may be OT
Hello all ... I'm beginning to learn C programming and recently came across an odd occurence. When my system is set to boot into graphical mode (via MCC->Boot) everything with the C programs works fine ... They compile and execute. However, if I disable the graphical environment at boot (i.e., boot into a shell, if that's the right terminology) the C programs will compile w/out error, but they won't execute ... Instead, I get the following message "- bash: a.out: command not found." Even when I then go into an X environment I still get the error message. But if I go back into MCC->Boot and select "launch into a graphical environment" and reboot, everything works fine ... If anyone has any advice as to how to get the C programs to execute when booting into a non-graphical environment it'll be most appreciated ... Thanks in advance ... [newbie] Real Player and Aumix
Hello, Today I installed the Real Player plugin so that I can listen to various radio programs on the web, including Car Talk. Plugin works fine. But there is a problem (it seems) with Aumix. The hour long Car Talk program is broken into 10 or so segments of a few minutes each ... Everytime one segment ends and the next begins, Aumix sets the volume level on PCM to zero ... Can someone please explain to me why this is happening, and better yet, how to stop it from happening in the future! Thanks, Adam Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Menudrake and kde 3.0.3
Hi guys, i updated to kde 3.0.3 on my 8.1 system and took the advice in kde 3 primer on the mandrakeforum site and renamed my ~/.kde folder to oldkde and then after relogging back into kde 3 - it runs even better but now I can't get Menudrake to update the menus - it shows the changes inside of menudrake(even after exiting menudrake and reloading menudrake) but clicking save no longer actually updates the menus. Using update-menus didn't help either. I tried using kmenuedit, but the changes made with that are lost after booting the system two or three times. Any thoughts? Right, I'm getting really lazy in my old age. Since recent posts have indicated that it's ok to leave your pc on for long periods of time, I would like mine to dial up and check my email. [newbie] Accessing my files at home ??
I'm at work today, and realised that I needed a file which is on my machine at home -doh! Today it's ok because I've asked my wife to email me the file. But she's always reluctant to do this, as she's got her hands full with our twin boys. :-) How easy would it be to turn on my home computer, log on to the net (with a modem) and access it from work? At work, I can use ftp etc-with windows. The file I'm after is Staroffice5.2, which shouldn't cause any problems. Would it be a case of ftping to the IP number that was assigned at home when home computer logged on the net? Or is it much more complicated than sending an email? Any advice is gratefully received. [newbie] Installing software problems
Ok, this is my first installation from a tar.gz file, so it's all a bit complicated. I decided to take on a nice easy simple installation that would really help me - imwheel - which enables the wheel on your mouse. So, I managed to gzip and then tar, which created a directory. I cd'ed into the directory and then did ./configure, which made a makefile. When I type make I get this error entering directory /home/adam/download/imwheel-1.0.0pre1 gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -g -02 -c jax.c In file included from jax.c:2: jax.h:22: X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory jax.h:22: X11/Xutil.h: No such file or directory jax.h:22: X11/Xresource.h: No such file or directory Then I get Error1 and it leaves the directory - any ideas? And incidentally, is there a way to copy some of the session from Konsole, so that I don't have to type it in the email? Things in the UK are a little confusing at the moment, but to let you know, that I've solved the problem with the comma. Over here, we can opt out of using BT's network (they used to have a monopoly until only a few years ago) and other companies get you to run across their network by dialling a prefix - so it's not to get an outside line, it's to jump to your phone provider from BT. Their 0800 number won't work unless you're on their network. I hope that makes some sense, it is difficult to explain. Adam _ Do You Yahoo!? There's many reasons why a list can occaisionally get spammed, and often the apparent sender is the main victim, ie, his/her acount or system was used to send the spam without his/her knowledge or consent. Often it's just an innocent mistake. As has already been said, the best tool for dealing with spam is the key. [newbie] gcc problems

[newbie] gcc and g++ output
I downloaded LM 8 when it first came out, and installed it on three computers: mine, my roommate's laptop, and my roommate's desktop. The two desktop computers are P3 450s with over 128 MB of RAM. The laptop is a P3 mobile 700 (I think that's the clock speed) with 128 MB of RAM. Anyway, the installations went without a problem, but when we tried to run programs, I noticed some strange happenings. On my machine, when using gcc or g++ if I invoke printf() or cout in a "Hello, World!" program, respectively, there is no problem when the object file is run. On my roommate's desktop, printf() works and prints "Hello, World!" to the console when the object file is run, but cout does not print anything to the console. On his laptop, neither form of output works and nothing is printed to the console. He piped his output to a file and the string appeared, but we both thought it was very strange that the default install could be so strange. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Francisco, Thanks for your comments. I'm still playing with it, and will see if I can get any further. I take it you installed 7.1 and then upgraded it to 8 rather than a clean install? RE: [newbie] Disappointed
Keith, Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately the laptop completely freezes when it gets to INIT. Nothing will work, and it won't switch to any other consoles. Can't call the manufacturer as I think its now out of warranty and they won't support Linux anyhow. Really don't understand whats causing it to crash. The ISO downloaded fine, the disk has been completely wiped down and repartitioned with both Mandrakes own installer, and then I tried Partition magic as well, so theres no problem disk wise. It all boots up real fast.. looking good... and it hits INIT like a brick wall.. bang! - And then freezes.. How very annoying. [newbie] Disappointed - the saga continues
Damn! No such luck. I repartitioned the drive with two ext2 partitions and a swap partition and reinstalled LM8. STILL no joy.. hangs on INIT 2.78. [newbie] Disappointed - the saga continues
Just looked at the partition tables with partition magic, and it only lists a Linux EXT2 filesystem, and one other partition of hex type 85. Surely this isnt right? When Mandrake installs it repartitions with two data partitions and a swap partition..? Might this be what is causing INIT to hang on bootup? a. [newbie] ntfs support?
I've heard alot about the ntfs support module being really really buggy. One can read horror stories of it completely destroying some people's ntfs partition and needing a format. Is ntfs support really this buggy? I'm running windows2000 on my first drive and mandrake 8.0 on my second drive. Thanks for your input. Adam
[newbie] Bootup Problems
Hello, Having just installed Linux Mandrake 8 on my laptop I'm faced with a problem. It installed fine and autodetected the hardware, - impressive! However, on rebooting, the laptop completely freezes after INIT 2.78. Nothing responds, even ctrl-alt-del. My specs: Pentium III 600 ATI Rage LT Pro Graphics Crystal Soundfusion sound 128Mb RAM 12Gb IDE disk Any ideas? A google search indicates many others have had this problem but no solutions are apparent. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Adam
[newbie] Aureal Vortex 2 is weird
OK, so my sound works fine on the desktop (kind of) but it doesn't work at all in UT. Can anyone explain this? I heard through the grapevine that maybe I should try piping it through esound, which I did. No change though. There were some recent posts about sound not working on some people's machines with different sound cards, and just to make sure, I checked those things out too. Does anyone have an identical card that could give me some helpful hints? I'm using an a3d vortex2 reference board, straight from the manufacturer. But anyone using the vortex2 drivers from sourceforge might be having the same problems. Thanx in advance for any replies, this list always comes through for me. Adam

[newbie] aureal vortex 2 and mouse problems
I have installed the latest drivers from aureal.sourceforge.com and they work... well kind of. I have limited desktop sound, but it doesn't appear able to handle mutiple streams. Also, I have NO sound in Unreal Tournament. BTW, thanx to all those who replied with some great info on my video card, it was much appreciated. Also, is there a mandrake hardware setting that will add support for my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer optical? I need the scrool wheel to work. Also, it would be great if my accesory buttons on the side worked. I know X doesn't support 5 buttons, but it would be cool to get one working. This includes the 3rd wheel button itself. I tried editing XF86Config-4 myself by removing the emulate 3 buttons option and adding the zaxismapping option but neither seem to work. Has anyone had success with this either by editing the file manually or letting DrakConf do it? Thanx in advance, Adam
[newbie] mesa GL removal
So, I'm a big gamer, but still want to tear myself away from the windows OS. I'm starting to learn more and more about how linux works and interacts with it's hardware. One of the things that is still illuding me though is having successful, reliable 3d support. After succesfully screwing up all hopes of doing this with my 7.2 installation it gave me one more reason to upgrade to 8.0 which I did promptly. So, this time following the instructions from nVidia exactly I forged ahead with high hopes. However it appears that the original mesaGL that come with X (I'm guessing) still remain in vestiges. I post I read on here a couple of days ago warned them to make sure to remove all the mesaGL stuff and to do this by following the nVidia readme. Well it doesn't specifically say anything about removing mesaGL, it appears that it's just "bypassed" by replacing the symlinks. Is this a correct observation? And if so, why isn't mine working? :) No matter what I try to play (so far just quake2, Unreal Tournament, and Tux racer demo) I always get some kind of error ranging from missing mesaGL and GLU library (seen during the make command for Tux racer) to svga perssion denied... broken pipline (quake2 execution) and completely not running at all or very slowly (Unreal Tournament). So it all amounts to this. I NEED HELP. I don't know what works with what... In windows installations the latest opengl support came with the latest drivers from nVidia, does this also apply to the linux versions of this driver? Do I need the OpenGL utilities library? Also, I've heard that the drivers for nVidia concerning the performance of my AGP port are poorly written and I should stick with the original drivers but use nVidia's openGL stuff. There DOES appear to be an option that can be added to X config file that changes it... would this be the proper way to do it? Basically I think I've gotten to much conflicting information. At this point I would settle for a step by step howto of exactly I can have 3d support using openGL on my system. Video Card: Creative Labs nVidia TNT2 Ultra 32 mb 700mhz pentiumIII 256mb ram Don't hold back people, any and all help is appreciated :) Thanx in advance. Adam

[newbie] ok, so mandrake 8.0 is out, need info
The betas of 8.0 have been using lilo as a bootloader... but one of the things I liked about LM 7.2 was that it used grub as it's primary boot loader and all I had to do was tell it where my other os was and it loaded neccesary files with a chainloading system. Lilo cannot do this. So did they switch to grub for the full release? Also, it looks like they completely re-vamped bootdrake making it completely worthless. Is there anyway that I can install GRUB from the getgo during the install process and use the same easy-to-use front-end that the 7.2 install had?... for me it was such an easy way to dual boot rather than copying all of these image output files and what not. Any help is greatly appreciated.
[newbie] Bootnet.img problems
I know this is supposed to be a mandrake forum but I commonly see posts about Suse and other distributions. I'm currently using Mandrake 7.1 but not wanting to buy any more cd's but still wanting to upgrade I decided to attempt a network install of redhat. If anyone knows how to do a network install of mandrake please let me know. I cannot read cd-r's, so going the .iso route is out of the question. Anyway, my problem is the bootimage is 1.40 mb large and anyone who's used a floppy knows that it's hard to get the theoritcal 1.44 mb size out of it. Is there any way to get around this, has anyone else tried it?

Re: [newbie] Migrate RedHat to Mandrake?
Hi Patrik, Rightwhere to begin??? If you plan to upgrade to Mandrake from Rehat, and you want to keep configuration settings, the best thing to do, is to back up you /etc folder, since this is the folder which stores those configuration files. You may also want to copy "/root" and "/home". The folders "/usr" and all the programs are created when you install Mandrake anyway. Does that help? Yet that's the wierd thing, I shouldn't have SCSI on my computer..the commands came with the origional kernel on Madrake 7.2. How would I turn the SCSI emulation off? Should be:append=" hdd=ide-scsi" Also, you must have scsi enabled in the kernel, and 'mkinitrd' a ram disk image as per the instructions here: http://mandrakeuser.org/install/kupgrade3.html here's my lilo conf as an example: image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2-tom label=242-tom root=/dev/hdb5 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.2-tom.img append=" hdd=ide-scsi" vga=788 read-only -- Dale Earnhardt, the greatest stock car driver ever, he's won his 8th and His Greatest Championship Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay
[newbie] Kernel woes. Black screen of nothingness
Well, I took myself onto a limb and tried to have fun with kernels. I downloaded the 2.4.2 kernel and did as the instructions said. It compiled greately and as it should have (I guess). Then I installed the kernel in my boot directory and updated lilo (keeping my old linux kernel). To test it out, I rebooted and selected the new kernel. Then the screen turns black. Nothing happens. it doesn't boot, give an error message or anything. Its depressing, I was atleast hoping for some upsetting "you've destroyed your computer" deal. Having nothing is really depressing ^^ I took a look at the lilo config file and it seems to be in order. Heres the main part: boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b vga=normal default=new keytable=/boot/us.klt lba32 prompt timeout=100 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/mykernel-2.4.0 label=new root=/dev/hda5 append=" hdd=ide0-scsi" vga=788 read-only the first image is pretty much copying my first linux boot configuration. anyone have any ideas of what I did wrong? Thanks! Adam

Re: [newbie] recompiling the kernel
When you installed Linux you would have had to installed the kernel source then you would go to the directory called "/usr/souce/linux" (sometimes its /usr/src/linux-2.2.18 or something like that). then you would type "make menuconfig" then once you have made all the settings for your computer, type "make dep", "make install", "make modules", "make modules_install". But I must warn you this is a tricky thing for a newbie. (It can get sticky for those who know what they are doing). The biggest speed increase comes from two things, you can compile the kernel optimized for your particular processor (LM comes compile for Pentium, but you can optimize for PIII, Cyrix, Athlon/Duron/Thunderbird, etc). The second comes from removing drivers from the kernel that you are using (why have ISDN support when you don't even have one or plan to get one). - Original Message - From: Adam Baxter To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, March 12, 2001 1:27 AM Subject: [newbie] recompiling the kernel I've heard of some things, such as, recompiling the kernel, could possibly help the computer go faster and more effecient. Hello, I have had the same problem as you... here are a few things that you could try: 1. Make sure that your Win98 partition is mounted before you browse the directory. I know that LM mounts these folders automatically but that sometimes can cause it to hang 2. Failing that, make sure that in "/etc/fstab" and "/etc/mtab" that the path to mount your win98 folder is after the mount point for /dev/hda3 HTH, Thomas Adam re: [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- jhun bacala <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Greetings, > > My LM 7.0 hangs up when trying to browse the folder > /mnt with a win98 directory on it. Re: [newbie] ReiserFS, Nvidia Driver, X 4.0.2 and 3d acceleration
Yes, I'm running Mandrak 7.2, NVidia (Geforce2 MX), and ReiserFS. I hand installed my XFree86 4.0.2 and get the source RPMs, ran rpm --rebuild NVIDIA_kernel*, installed the resulting RPM (found in /usr/src/RPM/RPMS) and then ran rpm --install NVIDIA_GLX*, and then rebooted the computer for good measure, ran XFree86 and it went beautifully. (There was some library work I think, but everything you need to know is at the NVidia site under Linux Drivers, click on the FAQ). - Original Message - From: "abe" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2001 5:55 AM Subject: [newbie] ReiserFS, Nvidia Driver, X 4.0.2 and 3d acceleration > Does this work? Its getting kinda boring. You know where he lives. Anyone who's in the general area go kick his butt, in the meantime, lets go back to help people, K? KC
