Thanks folks, When I went to the mandrake control center, the hpoj service wasnt started. It said to run /etc/init.d/hpoj setup as root. I did and it sorted it out, xsane now runs. Spamassasin has prebuilt filters that can be used by it to scan emails that contain virii. ClamAV and F-Prot can both scan a windows partition from Linux. However, I doubt they would be much help if you are trying to clean an ntfs partition. Well from a commercial point of view. 1. www.sophos.com has a Linux anti virus client, its easy enough to install as long as you have glibc installed, well an up to date version that is. The linux .tar.gz file(s) are all on the cd's and I can reccomend it, as I use it personally at work, and it works like a dream. 2. www.drweb.ru is a Linux based virus scanner, I have not used it yet so I cannot vouch for its reliability, however it is mentioned during the MDK 10 CE install process and therefore I am led to believe that it cannot be all that bad? I am planning to set it up and run some tests with it. But in all honesty if you have access to a legal copy of sophos, then I would reccomend it over anything else. We have never had a single issue with it to this day, and we have been using it for quite some time now ! I have a 4300 and IIRC, it was not supported until 9.1, and still not perfectly. The 4400 may have come even later. Non è che possiedi una scheda TV? A me dava problemi perché SANE la vedeva come primo dispositivo di acquisizione immagini. Questo mi succedeva con un vecchio PC. Su quello attuale ho tolto la scheda TV. Per risolvere il problema, io avevo dato SANE_DEBUG_MUSTEK_PP=128 scanimage -L La prima parte la dovrai cambiare avendo un mustek usb e non parallelo. Vedi la documentazione. Al limite dovrebbe bastare scanimage -L. Poi, ho preso il nome-del-mio-scanner che mi era venuto tra gli output del programma e l'ho assegnato con export SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=nome-del-mio-scanner e lo scanner è stato indirizzato correttamente. Visto che funzionava ho messo l'export in /etc/profile per evitare di ripeterlo tutte le volte. Maggiori informazioni in http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/docu.html Non ho provato a vedere cosa succede impostando il suid a xsane ??? cos'è suid? Se imposti il suid di un esequibile, chiunque lo esegua lo fa come se fosse il proprietario del programma. Quindi se il proprietario è root, il suid è impostato, e tu hai il permesso di eseguirlo, quando tu lanci il programma è come se lo lanciasse root e quindi il programma può accedere a tutte le risorse del sistema, anche a quelle precluse ad un utente normale. ciao, Andrea

Sono arrivato a questa conclusione: la configyrazione di mdk control center non centra niente (non mi chiedere perche?) poiche' la periferica in questione non e' supportata ne dal database della stessa mdk (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/it/hardware.php3) ne da quello di sane (www.mostang.com/sane). Per prima cosa mi sono procurato il beckend del mustek usb, e lo ho installato, ma questo non è bastato, ho tolto in un file di configurazione (scusami ma non ricordo quale) che si riferisa a sane e era nella cartella etc, ogni altro riferimento a altri beckend e ho mantenuto il solo mustek usb, a questo punto sane era costretto a usare il driver giusto, senza porre domande. Scusami se non posso essere più preciso, comunque io mi ero appoggiato a un numero della rivista linux pratico in cui si parlava proprio di scanner. Se non hai molta fretta posso ricercare quel numero (ho prestato il tutto a un mio amico che non ha nessuna esperienza con linux...). Ciao Nicola

Il file Snape25.bin lo puoi trovare nella partizione che hai lasciato
a
windows nella cartella windows/system/. Se non hai una partizione con
windows penso che lo trovi da qualche parte sul cd con ScanWise.
Se non lo trovi dimmelo che te lo spedisco (sono solo 32Kbyte).
Ora è veramente finita! Se tutto è ok lanciando il comando scanimage -
L
dovresti come output una riga simile:
device 'snapscan:/dev/usb/scanner' is a AGFA SNAPSCAN flatbed scanner
Se ti compare lancia a tua scelta xsane oppure xscanimage oppure
qualsiasi altra GUI per sane.

I started this thread and now have my Epson Perfection 1650 Photo scanner running with sane, xsane, the gimp, etc.. I was reading up on this myself. Andy's right in that the 1650 does work, but the 1250 does not because it doesn't use the Epson scanner language like the rest do. I had similar problems with Mandrake 8.1 and my scanner (Epson Perfection 1200 USB); I had it runing fine in 8.0 but the installation was to be done by hand. After testing the new scanner-drake (you1 need to update drakxtools, ldetect and drakxtools-newt, for example from cooker) and the package recognized my scanner but still it didn't run. After consulting with the scanner-drake author in the mandrake team we thought that the problem was with devs, that it seems is not fully supported in the kernel that came with 8.1; so I dissable devs (I must say that I had also problems with cdroms due to the use of devs) adding in the lilo config append line: devs=nomount; I restarted the system and when I ran scanner-drake the scanner was detected and started to work. I don't know if this will help, since I don't have a USB scanner, but I do have a USB smart card reader. It shows up under /proc/bus/usb and also as a SCSI device as sda. Allora, funzionare non funziona ma ora ti sspiego: ho fatto esattamente quello che mi hai detto, i 3 moduli erano caricati, ma quando ho lanciato scanimage mi ha detto che lo scanner non è stato rilevato. A questo punto ho apportatato le seguenti modifiche (quello che ho letto su uno specifico how-to, che però consigliava di non toccare i moduli e di agire sul kernel...): ho aggiunto a /etc/fstab la seguente riga: usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0 Poi da root ho eseguito: mount usbdevfs. Ho riavviato e a questo punto, eseguendo scanimage effettivamente lo scanner rispondeva. Peccato che all'avvio successivo il mouse, anch'esso usb, non desse + segni di vita (una cosa non bella per un newbie che non ha familiarità con la console...). Ho provato a ripristinare la configurazione ripetendo i passaggi all'indietro (compreso l'umount), ma niente. Non sapendo cosa altro fare ho reinstallato il sistema e ora è tutto a posto. Però non ho risolto il problema dello scanner. Io non mi azzardo + a rifare quello che ho scritto prima, perché temo possa morirmi il topo ;). Cosa ne pensi delle modifiche lette sull'how-to? Posso fare in qualche altro modo? Per trovare i parametri giusti per far convivere due dispositivi usb bisogna andarsi a quardare un po' di documentazione. inetd e` stato sostituito da xinetd
Prova a vedere man saned:
