Re: [users] Hijacked thread. Was: Standalone Help Files

2009-03-27 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

And in doing so you hijacked this thread. To ask a new question start a
new thread. DO NOT respond to a previous post and just change the
subject line.

What's the diff?
Who's the moderator?
What does s/he have to say?

I see this as such a petty argument that I can hardly believe it's
happening.

Many people use mail readers that provide topic threading based on part
of the message header. When a thread/message is "hijacked", that
threading is broken, and there ends up being two conversations in a
single thread.

The new message is lost in the old message thread by those that use
threaded email readers (eg Thunderbird)... and the new question that was
raised is often totally lost in the flurry of "hey, you broke the
thread" messages. As well, the original question is often also lost in
the flurry... so both parties loose out.

Just make a note of it that in all mailing lists, as a matter of
etiquette, you should always start a completely new message with its own
threading for a new topic. That's all people here are really asking for.

To do so is actually not too hard even if you don't remember the list
address... you can open an existing message, and in most mail readers,
you should be able to Right-click on the To: field and select Compose
Mail To or something similar. This will start a new message... no need
to reply and change topic.

I hope this helps clarify things a little here :-)

Re: [users] Base Users Guide ?

2009-05-08 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

Anyone can contribute - you don't need to be an expert to help out.
Even if the doc is something you may know nothing about, proof reading
is an essential part of the document development process. When someone
spends a lot of time looking at one document, they tend to become "word
blind" and will miss the obvious errors. A fresh pair of eyes looking
over the document can be a huge help.

C.

I guess I'd like to volunteer. I'm not a programmer, but I'm
comfortable with a computer. I currently have VISTA on a Dell machine.
Something like proof reading is my speed these days.

Frank

The easiest place to start is here:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation
Jean has been busy posting the User Guides for 3.x. They are in a
"Published" status, but still could really use fresh eyes looking them over.

Since the docs are all available on the Wiki, it is quite easy to log
in, and edit a page. You can do this on your own schedule, with no
deadlines or other pressure. Even a single edit to correct a spelling
error is welcome.

Things to look for:
 - spelling
 - grammar
 - consistency (looking even for those little things like the
consistent use of full stops on bullet lists)
 - technical content (use your own experience and knowledge to improve
what's already written)

 - missing content

You can do one of these things, or even all of them... whatever you're
comfortable with.

If you see something that requires a major rewrite, or missing info, you
can either make a note of it on the Wiki Discussion page, or raise it on
the d...@documentation.openoffice.org mailing list.

If you are comfortable with your knowledge on a topic, you can write a
draft (a HowTo, a FAQ, a Guide etc.). You can do it right on the Wiki
if you like. The rest of the Documentation team can help out with
shaping it into a complete document. If you would prefer to write
offline (outside of the Wiki) you can use the tools and guidelines
available on the OOoAuthors website at: http://oooauthors.org

We are also always looking for fresh ideas... things like screencasts,
new ideas for ways to organize and present things on the Wiki, or just
about anything else that comes to mind. Feel free to speak up, add your
thoughts and ideas.

The most important thing is to do what you're comfortable with.

There has been some discussion about this over on the Documentation

The docs on how to use the command line wpg2odg converter are found

In that list, the one at the bottom is likely what you're looking for,

I can't vouch for how well the converter software works, but that should
at least give you an executable, and the docs required so you can test
it out for yourself.

The most basic word count can be found under:

This is why I _never_ recommend Debian to anyone. Gnome 2.8 and
OpenOffice.org 1.1.3 were released in 2004. In the Linux world, that is
Precambrian. Debian has a newer release (Etch) from April this year,
but it's still full of old versions of pretty much everything.

I still don't know where this help file should be installed.

Typically, the help files are located under the help directory in
whatever directory OpenOffice is installed in.

totally stumped, I just feel helpless, frustrated and angry - and pretty
negative about OpenOffice, even though the problem's more likely to be in
Debian's installation stuff rather than OO itself.

I think you've nailed it there. It's more likely to be a Debian issue
and nothing at all to do with OpenOffice itself. I think you're best
off going with Jonathon's suggestion and installing an updated version
of OpenOffice.org... at least 1.1.5 if you have to stay with the version

Re: [users] OO 1.1.3. No-help. Feeling frustrated. Help, please!

2007-07-17 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

Upgrading software really isn't fun. Downloading it, unpacking it,
./configure; make; make install, yes, that can take less than an hour.
Or sometimes it hits incompatibility bugs ("can't find iplv6.h"). Then
the fun really starts.

Wow... is Sarge like that? Current Linux distributions are almost
exclusively upgraded via the applications in the software repositories.
I can't remember the last time I had to do a ./configure in the
upgrade on a regular application. It is simply fire up the software
management tool (Synaptic, Adept, Smart etc. depending on Ubuntu, SUSE
etc.) and click a few times.. wait for it to download and install.. done.

This is even how I update my OpenOffice.org install.

By the way, the new version of OpenOffice can read your 1.1.3 version
files just fine. It can even save back to that version if you want.

So I tend not to upgrade software as such. Unless something is really
badly broken, I don't try to fix it. Being without the help file counts
as broken here.

I don't blame you for not wanting to upgrade with all the pain that
you've described with your Debian install.

The new stuff is nice... very nice... and so very easy to maintain in
current Linux distributions (I cannot speak for Debian Etch since I
refuse to use Debian because if it's insistence on using old
applications.. maybe Etch has joined the rest of the Linux world and
moved to Repository based software management?).

OK, so it's probably not Full Screen being toggled. I can't think of

Next step is to tell everyone what operating system you are using

If you can, take a screen capture and upload it to one of the many free

Re: [users] [moderated] YOU MUST GIVE A SUMMARY HERE

2007-08-01 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

I just downloaded OpenOffice.org 2.2.

I purchased this to replace my Microsoft Works and have a ton of .wps files

I want to transfer. Not computer literate and as I check the list of files I
do not find Microsoft Works . Wps files.!
Any help appreciated!

OpenOffice.org is a free download from http://www.openoffice.org.

There are a couple of options available to you with the current version.
As mentioned in another reply, you can start up MS Works and save all
your wks files as rtf and import the rtf into Writer.

Another option is given in detail on page 462 of the User Guide.
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/OOo2.x/user_guide2_draft.pdf
and briefly mentioned in the user FAQ:
http://user-faq.openoffice.org/faq/ar01s05.html#id2811800

An import filter for Works files has been developed, and is in the
process of being integrated into a coming version of OpenOffice.org. I
can't guess which release will have it, but a fix is coming:

The link you are trying to use is pointing to a very very old version of
OpenOffice.org. Unless you specifically need this antique version of
OpenOffice.org, I'd suggest you grab a newer version... either direct
from OpenOffice.org, or if you still want to download an ISO from the
University of Twente (in the Netherlands), go up one level to

I have to admit that I don't understand that FAQ...

- 'From the Explorer ...' ? Which explorer?

So I'm a little puzzled.

The information on the website link (above) is old... when we link to
the FAQ, we should be linking to the Wiki version - the web content is
being reviewed... updated, moved to the Wiki (most falls into this
category), or archived.

The FAQ on the Wiki is the leading version:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Impress

Unfortunately, the Wiki currently has the old content from the
website... the advantage is.. someone who knows how to create an
OrgChart with OpenOffice can easily update the Wiki FAQ page with the
correct information. :-)

It has a lot to do with how the EPS was created. If the EPS was created
without a preview image (an embedded image), then you will not see
anything, but the image will print fine. If whoever created the EPS can
reexport it with the preview image "turned on" then when you import it
into Writer, you should (in theory) see the image. This is the same
behavior regardless of what application you are using (it's not just a
OOo Writer thing, it's the same in MS Word etc.).

The next question: do you know of a piece of software that converts a

The Gimp can do it. When you save an image as EPS, the Save (or

feature in the Linux version of The Gimp, and it works perfectly. There
is a Windows build of The Gimp available here:

MS Word does the display on my computer. I found a colleague where the

ok, that works, C. Thank you.

However, the quality is very bad: dithered black and white only. I
should find something different or enhance the preview. Otherwise people
will prefer jpg or tif regardless how printing quality suffers.

I did a little experimenting here... try opening the original EPS file
and just saving it again with a new with The Gimp... then re-import it
to your document.

When I checked the Preview checkbox I got a dithered image (that you
mentioned) on my test image when it was imported. When I left the check
box unchecked, and then imported the EPS, it showed up nicely (full
color, no dithering). Note, this may be due to the fact I am using
Solaris at the moment for my testing (GhostScript is installed here, and
that may be handling showing the image on an EPS without an embedded
preview).

Anyone else care to chime in here?

Re: [users] Using CTL

2007-08-21 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

I am using OpenOffice v2.04 for Linux, and am very new with it.

Most of what I want to use it for will be in English, but occasionally I need
to write a document in Hebrew; I have Hebrew set up as the CTL language. I am
using the fonts that came with openSuSE v10.2; i am assuming that these are
Unicode fonts, and that they support a Hebrew character set, but I have no real
basis for believing this. "Enabled for complex text layout" is checked, but is
greyed out, which looks suspicious to me.

In Tools > Options > LanguageSettings > Languages I see no way to toggle
explicitly between Western and CTL languages. Simply setting alignment to the
Right margin does not switch to CTL, but I didn't really expect it to do so.

What have I overlooked? Or what have the writers of the documentation failed to
make sufficiently explicit to penetrate my consciousness?

Hi Stan. I've looked into this a little. In the regular OpenOffice.org
2.2.1 release the CTL checkbox is working (ie not greyed out) and I can
select a language for CTL.

I am guessing you are using the Novell build of OpenOffice.org that came
with openSUSE 10.2. Have you asked this question on the openSUSE
mailing list yet?

You could try adding in the OpenOffice.org repositories and installing
the latest Novell build (which will bring you up to 2.2.1).

http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories#OpenOffice.org_STABLE
This may fix your problem.

Yes, and reorganization is in the works.

Consider the Wiki FAQ as leading. The WebFAQs which are incredibly old
in places (some refer to solutions for StarOffice v5.1 for example) are
no longer current. If you to http://documentation.openoffice.org/ and
click the FAQ link it will take you to the Wiki (currently to a Wiki
redirect page... I will request that to be fixed). The main page FAQ
(and other) links should also be redirected to the Wiki FAQ.

Hang in there... a lot is being done to open things up so that the
community can help keep it up to date - such as moving things like the
FAQs over to the Wiki. There is a lot to do, but we're getting there. :-)

But this is still not using the CTL facility of OOo. The "Enabled for CTL: is
still greyed out (and checked), and I have not been able to find a way to
switch between "Western" and CTL languages. It might help me if I knew what
action _should_ toggle between the two. Since only two languages are involved,
I would have expected the same behavior as that used in other OSes, namely
Right goes to CTL and Left goes to "Western".

Office for her so I told her to download your office suite. She emailed me

(which I have on my computer). Is there anyway to read this?

Hello Donna.

You have a couple of choices (I am assuming you are using some version
of Microsoft Windows).

1. If you are using MS Office, you can download and install the ODF
plugin for MS Office: http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/

This will allow you to open ODF files in MS Office.

2. You can also install OpenOffice.

3. You can ask your daughter to save all her documents in MS Office
format instead of the ISO standard ODF format. This is done with File
Save As, and it can also be set to the default save format for OpenOffice.

To set MS Office format as the default, your daughter needs to go to:
Tools > Options > Load/Save > General > Default file format and set the
Always save as option for each Document type to Microsoft Office formats.

(Copy to Donna as she is not subscribed to the mailing list)

Do you get the chart filter request when you do a File > Open or when

OpenOffice defaults to the ISO standard format for documents. This
format can be opened and read by any office suite that uses this
standard. Microsoft Office does NOT adhere to this standard (instead
opting to lock people into proprietary formats). This leaves you with a
few choices:

 - encourage others to use an office suite that uses ODT such as
OpenOffice.org or KOffice (just to name two).

 - ask the people you are sending documents to, to install the ODF
Plugin for Microsoft Office from here:
http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/ This fixes MS Office so
that it can open and save ODF files

 - keep the document in ODF format and when you want to send out the
document click File > Send > Email as Microsoft Word and the document
will be converted and attached to a new mail message in your default
email client.

 - save your files in MS Office format (File > Save As) (You can also
set OpenOffice.org to always save your documents in MS Office formats by
going to: Tools > Options > Load/Save > General > Default file format
and set the file format for each document type)

You can ask your question on this mailing list and the volunteers here

what version of OpenOffice.org you are using (for example version 2.2.1,

What program do i use to open a Publisher file?

MS Publisher uses a proprietary file format that is not supported by any
other application. This software is the perfect example of why people
should stay away from proprietary non-standards compliant software. You
get locked into a proprietary file format that cannot be read or opened
by any other program, and that even is incompatible with itself over
different versions. You are at the mercy of the vendor.

There are some things you can do if you still have access to the version
of Publisher that was used to create the Publisher files.
 - Open the document in Publisher convert the Publisher document to
HTML, PDF or PostScript.

If you need to be able to edit the document, you can export it as TXT or
RTF, but you will have to recreate your layout all over again.

There was some discussion about Publisher here:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=61263&highlight=publisher

Microsoft support suggests exporting as TIFF (an image format) or PDF.

There are some free online resources to convert PUB files to PDF such
as: https://www.pdfonline.com/convert_pdf.asp This is a good solution
if you do not have access to the version of Publisher that was used to
create the file.

OpenOffice.org Draw and Write are actually quite powerful, and can do
almost all of what most people do with Publisher. If you need a more
powerful desktop publishing application, Scribus is very good

Re: [users] Where to go

2007-10-24 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

I am using Windows XP 2000 Iam using version 2.3. Of OpenOffice.org
Iam trying to use the color system to color different things, and I do
not know where to find it on the toolbar and where to go to change the
fonts and different number size.

Please tell me where to go to get it.

There are several ways to change colors. If for example you want to
change the color of a word to red, select the text, and find the toolbar
button with a capital A and a colored bar under it. Next to that A is a
little down pointing triangle. Click that and it will open a color
palate where you can select the text color. Alternatively you could
also go to the top menus and click Format > Character > Font Effects and
select the font color there.

To change the fonts, you can select the font from the toolbar. By
default is should be in the second row of buttons. In that second row
there are three white boxes. The second box is the font selector. You
can also change the fonts by clicking Format > Character > Font and
choose the font you want.

Does this help you out and get you started in the right direction?

You have a few choices. You can pick the one that is best for you:

 - Encourage your friends to download and install OpenOffice.org.

 - Send people a PDF if they do not need to edit the documents you are
sending. OpenOffice.org can easily create PDFs from your documents.

 - Click File / Save as and set the File Type to "Microsoft Word

 - Click File / Send / Email as Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org will
convert you document "on the fly" to MS Word format and attach it to an
new email for you.

 - Set the OpenOffice.org default file format to always save your
documents in Microsoft Office formats. Click Tools / Options /
Load/Save / General and set the Default file formats for the various
document types to their equivalent Microsoft Office formats.

 - People still using Microsoft Office can install the "Sun ODF Plugin
1.1 for Microsoft Office" from here:

work with the ISO standard document formats in Microsoft Office.

Re: [users] Extensions.services.openoffice.org?

2008-03-31 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

Your website sometimes has an extra "services" i.e.
extensions.services.openoffice.org -- why the services? Why not just switch
it to extensions.openoffice.org? I've noticed that going to
extensions.openoffice.org seems to go to a different place, but
services.openoffice.org doesn't even work. What's going on here?

The simple answer is that this is due to where some parts of the
OpenOffice.org web services are hosted. There are limitations to what
is possible within the Colabnet infrastructure (Colabnet is the host for
the OOo website). To provide additional web services beyond what can
easily be done within the Colabnet infrastructure, some parts of the
openoffice.org website are hosted elsewhere, and linked via
*.services.openoffice.org.

Generally, anything you see that is something.services.openoffice.org is
hosted outside the Collabnet infrastructure. For example, the forum at
http://user.services.openoffice.org and the Wiki at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org are hosted on servers in the Sun
offices in Hamburg, Germany.

There is a fix described here:

I'd say that without JRE certain things (Base!) won't work...

Yes that is correct. Anything in OpenOffice.org that needs Java won't
work after you disable Java (logical)... so that usually means some of
the Wizards, and Base.

If you do all those steps except the Java one (leaving Java enabled),
you will still see a startup speed increase (just not as much as when
you also disable Java)... at least I've seen a change when running on
Solaris, Kubuntu and openSUSE. I have never tried it in Windows since I

I was wondering if there are any compatibility issues between open source
software, such as yours, and portable harddrives? Thanks.

Michael Brunelle

Open source software is no different from any other software in this
regard.

There are now some (hopefully a very few) external hard drives available in
this country that are pre-set so that they are quite difficult to use fully
with Linux. :-(

Pre-set? How? Current Linux distributions can read and write most, if
not all, hard drive partition formats including Microsoft's NTFS.

I have never seen a portable hard drive or USB drive that could not be
easily mounted in Linux, and used by OpenOffice.org. This is not to say
such drives don't exist, but I have yet to see one that will not work
with Linux and OpenOffice.org.

With pre-installed software that resists formatting for at least one
partition. I have not seen this often, but I have seen it. (The idea, I

automatic.)

And how does this pre-installed software get executed?

In Windows, you run it and it backs your data up for you, I believe. (I have
seen it done, but never done it.)

 > Especially on a Linux box?

It doesn't - but it blocks anything else and makes formatting the whole drive
difficult.

I think I know what you are referring to here... external drives such as
the Maxtor One-Touch. These are still usable, but yes that hidden
"helpful" partition can be a headache if you want to reformat the entire
drive. It takes a little wrangling regardless of OS to reclaim the
entire drive from one of these specialty drives - much like laptops with
a hidden recovery partition.

Re: [users] http://www.saveXP.org/ [WAS: Wrong OS or OS Version]

2008-06-10 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

Serious question: what is so good about Windows XP that it is worth
petitioning for?

I have used Windows XP in the past, and found it a very frustrating
and insecure operating system. What features does Windows XP have that
users feel are missing from other OS's?

This is not a troll, but a serious question.

This is my observations... just observations, not based on "facts"...

Many many people are dissatisfied with Vista. It failed to live up to
hopes and hype. It will not run well on anything but the latest
hardware. People dislke the rather silly security features of Vista.
People are happy with XP as it is.

Security is generally of little concern to the vast majority of users
that I talk to - the concern for security is usually found amongst those
who are more computer savvy, and those users already know how to either
lock down Windows XP or use an alternative such as Linux.

Windows XP has familiarity. It has been the "only" OS available for a
long long time (8 years is a whole generation of users who only know one
OS), and this has got people used to one way of working... change is not
easy, and Vista or any other OS such as Linux means change. (I say only
because when in the last 20 years have you gone into a consumer
electronics store or a dedicated home computer shop and found anything
but some version of Windows?)

Windows XP has a massive stock of commercial applications that work with
it. Vista cannot lay the same claim as many legacy applications work
poorly or even not at all (look at the large number of people asking for
a version of OpenOffice.org that works in Vista... they've been burnt
before by Vista and now they ask first).

People are not aware that there are other excellent choices such as OSX,
Linux, OpenSolaris, etc etc.

The list goes on and on.

1) Dissatisfaction with the successor of XP
2) Unfamiliarity with anything else
3) Inability of legacy programs to run on other OSes (including the

I understand then that there is no 'killer feature' in Windows XP that
people need other than the ability to run legacy software. I thought
that maybe the OS itself had some feature that was desirable. Thanks.

That is how I observe it.

Sadly, not directly. Although OOo can create PDFs it cannot open them
for re-editing. What _is_ possible is to save the document not only as
a PDF but also as a .odt file. That way, you can load in the .odt
file, modify it, save it, then save as PDF as well.

It is coming though. Take a look here:

This extension requires the latest OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta.

So.. tell them so :-)

Just guessing here... the vast majority of people, myself included, are

Hi Michelle

OpenOffice.org is an office suite (word processor, spreadsheet, drawing,

An open source and free cross platform graphics editor I often recommend

this program to resize, scale, and edit images.

I am guessing that you are using MS Windows. The Windows version can be

The Mac version can be downloaded from: http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/

For the Chinese version, you can also get the RedOffice3.0 version of
OpenOffice.org. This is OpenOffice.org, but with a totally redesigned
user interface designed by and for the Chinese market.

You will find more information (in Chinese) here: http://www.ch2000.com.cn/

The user interface redesign (shown at OOoCon2007 in Barcelona) for
RedOffice3.0 is really interesting. I cannot find any screencaps to
link to though. Basically, they have completely removed the traditional
menus, and given it in what I would best describe as a "task based" icon
driven user interface. The result is something that is much more
intuitive to the Chinese users, and more suitable to their style of
writing documents. It is quite brilliant, and I wish there was an
English version for the rest of us.

I downloaded the RedOffice to give it a try. It's weird that the program is
compressed in rar instead of an open format. I had to terminate the
installation because a dialogue popup saying it would update some files used
by OpenOffice(I was doing some work in the Writer at the moment). I just
don't know why it will alter some files used by OpenOffice(my current
version is 2.2.0).

Rar is a common file compression format (as are zip, arj etc.).
I don't see the issue with rar over any other compression format. If
they had picked bzip2, gzip or tar, that would have likely confused
their MS Windows customers since these compression formats are not as
common on the Windows platform.

I have never installed RedOffice (I can't read or speak Chinese) so
can't give you any input as to why it would try to overwrite an existing
installation of OpenOffice. All I have to go on was the presentation
that the guys from RedOffice gave at the conference in Barcelona this
summer. Do they have a support mailing list or forum? Maybe the answer
can be found there?

Another possibility is the Chinese Native Language project at

The simplest solution to this is to export as PDF. It is quite likely
they all have a PDF viewer (eg Acrobat Reader) available. This will
allow them to view the presentations but not edit, and you will be sure
that what they receive is exactly what you intended.

OpenOffice.org can save files in MS Office format. You can even set (in
the Options) it to do this by default so that you do not have to
remember to save the documents in MS Office formats.

When you install OpenOffice.org, you have a choice to allow
OpenOffice.org to be the default for your documents. Leave those
checkboxes unchecked if you want your documents to remain associated
with MS Office. The file association is only a convenience thing
anyway, and regardless of what the file association is, you can always
open any document with either office suite.

OpenOffice.org does not override word documents unless you tell it to.
If you open a MS Word formatted document, you can work on it and save it
as MS Word format without needing to do anything special. It will only
convert to ODT if you tell it to.

The short answer is OpenOffice.org 3.0 will have import support. If you

All you should have to do to save in MS Word format is select File >
Save As and from the File Type drop down, pick Microsoft Word
97/2000/XP. Then your document is saved in Micorsoft Office format.

You can also set an option so that OpenOffice.org always saves in MS
Office format (and then you don't need to do a Save As to get an Office
compatible document).

  - Click Tools > Options
  - Click the + next to Load/Save to open that menu
  - Click on General
  - Find the section labeled Default file format.
There are 2 drop down boxes here. You can select each document type and
set the default file format. So for example to set Writer to always
save in MS Word format, select Text document on the left drop down box,
and select Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP on the right box.

If you do this, then you don't need to remember to explicitly save your
docs in MS Office format.

I hope this helps, and you give OpenOffice.org a second chance.

OpenOffice.org is definitely free for you to download. It is free now,
and will always be free. You get the full version, bit some trial
version. You never have to pay for it. Support from all the volunteers
is also free here on this mailing list.

Go to http://www.openoffice.org to download the latest version.

I have a feeling you didn't land on the right page then. Use the link
above, and that will take you to the right place.

Installation should be fairly easy. I assume you are running Windows,
so find the executable file you downloaded from
http://www.openoffice.org and double click on it. This will start the
installer and all you should have to do is read the instructions and
click Next. The installer will unpack the files and then lead you
through installing OpenOffice.

If I go to the homepage for this application &

> start over to download & install, should I FIRST uninstall the version
> I now have before doing over?

You can do that. It will ensure you have a clean start.

The reason I wnted this is because I

> was told that using Open Office would allow me to open some email
> attachments that I get that are sent using Open Office Or a PPS.file
> ( power Point ) attachment.

OpenOffice.org can open doc, xls, pps, ppt files.

It will not work yet for the latest Office formats, but that is the case
for everyone. The documents created by the newest version of MS Office
are currently incompatible with everything including older versions of
MS Office. Version 3.0 of OpenOffice.org will support the new MS Office
formats.

If I try to open an attachment using thoes
programs, I get the pop up screen that asks for my "Administrative Rights

> & wants 25 character product keycode" from back of cd.

This sounds like you are using MS Vista, and have the "Trial" version of
the new MS Office installed. If you use this trial version of Office,
it expires after a fixed period and you have to pay a lot of money to
get the license key to get back into your documents.

This will never happen with OpenOffice.org.

> trying to download the Microsoft Office Standard Edition. Is the

MS Office and OpenOffice.org are not the same program. They are similar
programs that do the same kinda of jobs. You can use either to write
documents, build spreadsheets, create presentations, build databases,
draw things etc., but... the Microsoft one will cost you a fair bit of
money to buy a legal version. OpenOffice.org is free for the legal
version, and can work with MS Office format documents.

Re: [users] OOo is free to get, free to use--why is that not generally known?

2007-11-22 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org
Maybe it is so darn good (and it is) and the majority of the
computer-using world so brainwashed by the MS hegemony that some
otherwise perfectly reasonable folks think that this is all maybe too
good to be true. I must confessed that the thought crossed my mind when
I discovered OOo when I got interest in Linux in generally and Ubuntu
specifically.

I think you hit one one major aspect here. The vast majority of people
only know what is given them on their computer. To them a computer is
am appliance. They take what they get. If there is no icon on the
desktop, the application may as well not exist (look at all the pleas
for help and then amazement when they discover that there are programs
listed under Start > Programs). They are told that they have to pay
hundreds or thousands of dollars, euros, zlotys, shillings, francs or
whatever or the software must either of such poor quality that it's
unusable, or it's illegal.

Couple all that with the fact that the world has a lot of crooks, and
people have been burned... by spyware, malware, credit card scams etc
etc. It's not much wonder no one can believe that software can actually
be given away for free.

Public awareness is slowly changing though. If it wasn't we wouldn't be
so inundated with these questions. These frustrating questions mean
that people are actually branching out and exploring the better world of
Linux, OpenOffice.org, The Gimp, FireFox etc.

Take a look here... and you will see just how popular the OpenOffice.org
website is... http://tools.services.openoffice.org/dashboard/

This morning I forward as you suggested the presentation with 20
slides (4,55 mb) to someone who directly returned my 10 slides (11,6
mb). Result: those 20 slides were not returned.
Why are 20 slides only 4,55 mb and 10 slides 11,6 mb, while the
contents is equivalent.
Has Open Office a possibility to compress the presentation before
e-mailing it.

Moreover the presentation sent via a free server did not help.

The fact that a 4.55 MB attachment made it through, but not 11.6
indicates a mailbox size issue. As for the size of the files, that may
depend on the image type that's saved. OpenOffice can use any of
several different image file types. OpenOffice files are, by default,
zipped, so they are compressed. However many image file types are
already compressed and cannot be compressed further. Also, as I
mentioned in another note, you appeared to have sent the file again,
rather than just the link to the file. The point of using a server was
that instead of sending the file directly, you simply tell the recipient
where the file can be found and they then download it directly, without
going through email.

There is an OpenOffice.org extension that is being developed that might
be helpful in situations like this. It is called Presentation
Minimizer. It is not ready just yet, but watch the Extensions site
here: http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/ When it is released (I
don't know any fixed date), you will find the installation info and
download links on the Extensions site.

Re: [users] Grammar checker on its way...

2007-11-28 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

Of course, maybe someday there will be a grammar checker in OOo Writer

and the issue will be hashed out then.

The grammar checker is in the works.

For which language(s), please?

There is a grammar checker in the extensions repository:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/languagetool

"LanguageTool is an Open Source language checker for English, German,
Polish, Dutch, and other languages."

There are some pretty interesting Extensions on the Extensions site :-)

Thanks for any help you can give.

As far as I know, nothing else can read Publisher files.

That is correct. Even Microsoft does not have a proper alternative.
Their solution if you simply want a viewer for .PUB files is to download
and install the complete version of the latest MS Publisher. It will
install in Demo mode if you do not have the license key. You can then
use it to view the .PUB files.

You have one other solution. If the originating author of the .PUB file
cannot resend the documents to you in a format that you can read, you
can use one of many online PDF generators such as http://www.pdfonline.com/

I would not recommend this for confidential materials.

I hope this helps.

Dear Open office!

I am using version 2.3 for mac. and it stinks! I am sorry to say this,
but you have turned at really nice product into a copy of Microsoft
Word. The earlier versions worked very well with my keyboard and the
shortcuts. This one do not! The apple button is not integrated, and it
doesn't work with ctrl button either... the new fast scroll function is
nice, but a bit out of control some times.

I have used open office for 2 years now, I know what i am talking about.
I love the fact that it can open any file, from other programs and I
have never had problems like this before. I use open office because it
used to work better than Word, but now I am not so sure, and considering
wether I should switch back.

I am dissapointed, that the mac version is no longer as god as it used
to be.

Hope the update is better.

Hi Louise.

I am assuming you are using the OpenOffice.org that requires X11?

You can always move back to a previous version of OpenOffice.org. Many
people find that a particular version works better for their needs.
Some people are still using 1.1.5 for example.

There is a lot of work being done on the native Mac port of
OpenOffice.org. It is still in development and should be ready for
everyone with OpenOffice.org 3.0.

Also, NeoOffice does a nice job of making a native Mac version of
OpenOffice.org. They do lag at least one release behind the official
OpenOffice.org though.

There are many options available to you. I hope that you find one taht
works well for you.

You do not need a username or password to download OpenOffice.org. Just
point your web browser at http://www.openoffice.org and follow the links
to download the latest version.

OpenOffice.org is always free to download and you can install it on as
many computers as you wish.

Hi George. When you get a reply to a question you asked on the forum,
you should (by default) get an email when someone replies.

I found your posting on the forum here:

and you have had one reply so far.

The site www.openoffice.com is where you can download Openoffice, not
Microsoft Office. OpenOffice is comparable to Microsoft Office and can
read & write Microsoft Office files, other than the new Office 2007
formats. OpenOffice is available for free. Microsoft Office is a
commercial package that you have to pay for.

James... I think you made a small typo there :-) It should be
http://www.openoffice.org not .com.
