We have typical office-envirement: some word, excel, some host, web.
HW-compression brings up to 9:1 (average, i thing 4-5:1).
Take attention with SW, even a 72xx can't handle many of SW compressed links.

Lupi is right. Before implementing you have to test. Ask your Cisco Provider
for AIM Boards to test (and the rigt IOS)

For SW you don't need an AIM.
HW requires an AIM

example of HW compression:

frame-relay payload-compression FRF9 stac caim 0

for SW replace stac caim 0 with software.

Be sure, that 12.1 work well wiht your central Router.
We had som troubles with a 7206 on central site. we are now on 12.2.12

Hi all

I am planning to implement Compression on all my Routers. We are using cisco
2610 routers with IOS 12.1 at all my locations.
guide me how i can go about it. I had read on Internet that there is a AIM
module for compression. is there any configuration to be done on routers for
enabling compression.I had read on internet that we can implement hardware as
well as software compression.
what is the difference between two. do you need the AIM modules for
implementing software compression. Can anyone explain me in detail. Urgent
Response please.

QOS on IOS 12.1.10 2610 Router [7:61269]

I can only apply service-policy out "name" to the main interface but not to
sub interfaces.  Can some one tell me if it automatically applyes to sub
interfaces.

I would probably look at 12.1.16. It is GD and should be stable. IP Plus
IPSec 3DES only requires 8 and 40 so you should be fine. If you are feeling
brave you could load up 12.2.10b.. :)

Sounds like a 2620 motherboard with a 2610 case.  If the show ver says 2620
and the interface configuration is for a fast ethernet interface, then my

ok, here is one I have never heard.

Router says 2610 on it.  Sh ver says 2620.  Router has ethernet interface
(it says 2610), but ios makes you configure a f0/0 interface.

Mac address for interface is 0002.16f8.2380

I can find out through and oui serach that 000216 is cisco, but does anybody
know how to check the last 6 or has anyone else seen this issue?  Unless my
jedi training is incorrect, don't 261x's only have 10mb interfaces??

In some releases of the IOS you can't place the native VLAN on 
a subinterface.  Remove the subinterface you have for VLAN1 and 
put the VLAN1 IP address on the major interface like this:

interface Fastethernet0/0
 ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
interface Fastethernet0/0
 encapsulation dot1q 2  (or is that encapsulation 2 dot1q ?)
 ip address 10.2.2.1 255.255.255.0

You get the idea.

Hi everybody;I configured a 2610 router with VIC-BRI S/T TE and NM-2V
voice module for VoIP applications.The router runs with IOS
c2600-is-mz.120-7.XK1. But I could not achived to make voice call with
remote site. Actually when I dial my local number I get too high dial
tone and could not dial remote site, vice-versa...The configuration is

Sorry, you can't.  Not with a 2600.  You need to move up to something like a
3600 or, preferably an AS5x00.

The reason is simple.  The 2600 has only a NM slot.  You are already taking
up that slot with either your PRI, or your E-1 R-2 CAS.  But to also serve
analog calls, you need a modem NM, in order to demodulate the analog
signals.

So basically, you need 2 NM's - one for your PRI or CAS, and the other for
your modems.  Unfortunately, a 2600 can only handle 1 NM.

Why don't you try by turing off routing ( no ip routing) and just specify a
default-gateway on your 2621. Test the connection again. I have seen this
problem where if you specified a default-gateway plus a default route, most
likely you will not able to access anything outside it subnet.

I have 5 Cisco routers with me. Out of that two are in real network, and

Here right now I am testing on only one interface, imagine If I have 10
WAN and 2 ethernet.. Then This kind of setting will be useful. We

Yes I am having 2 more cisco routers (3660, and 2610) router and some
Intel routers (excluding the two routers (2620 and 2610)that I am
testing). Cisco routers are connected to L3 switch, and some of the Intel
routers are connected to L3 switch (but on different VLANS)and some of
them connected on L2 switch.

As far as concerning with Layer 3 switch, I am not finding any
falut. Becuase it is perfectly working with the same port with the second
router. I am only facing the problem when I am connected 2620, with this I
am able to ping to that particular VLAN not beyond that.

2620 Router--> L3switch --> other network

If I replace 2620 with 2610, then it is working properly. 

In L3 Switch I am having 8 VLANS on port base. And I am using static
routing in that.

2610. And on the interface speed is auto, and duplex is auto. Other side
(on switch side) it is also same  i.e., both are in auto. I tried after
removing the auto option, but it is same situation.

Sorry, I am testing it on 2620 not on 2610. You are correct in 2610 will
not be having FE. So in my problem first router is 2620, and the second

2610 router.  According to the quick reference guide, there is no fast
ethernet module available for the 2610.  Unless they've come out with
something new, this may be your problem.  I'm guessing that you have
your switch set for 100Mbps/full duplex and your router can only do
10Mbps.  

In addition, not only can you not do 100Mbps/full duplex on a 2610,
that ethernet interface cannot be a trunk port.  Those do not support

Problem with Fastethernet 2610 router [7:13497]

Hai,

I am facing a strange problem. I am using a cisco 2610 router in my
network. In that I am having one fastethernet, and 2 WIC2T . When I am
connecting to the L3 switch, it is able to ping to that particular VLAN,
and unable to ping to other VLANS or outside of that VLAN. If I use
another router with ethernet card (becuase I am not having another
ethernet card in first router), with the same setup it is able to
communicate with the outside world. So I concluded that it is not the
problem with L3 switch. I tried to find it on cisco site, but unable to
locate the solution.

The cable may not be bad.  There are 2 wiring types of V.35  Winchester and
Straight.  It may be simply the other cable type.

the ags+ or CGS is doing clocking, I forgot to list the command in my
email.

I just tryed something else. I plugged a standard 2500 V35 DTE cable to
the CAB-VCF and connected the ags+ to a 2501. The interfaces came up/up
and stayed that way.

I may have 2 bad CAB-SS-V35MT's, or a bad port on the WIC-2T.

The serial interfacces come up/up but then after a second or two line
protocol goes down on both sides and they become up/down.

I thought the AGS+'s serial interface was bad (I had a bad applique a
while back). So I moved to a different interface on the AGS+, same
situation.

I then decided to try a different router, I replaced the AGS+ with a
CGS, and I got the same results.

I now think the issue is with the cable. a) I could have a bad cable. b)
the cable I have could be two long.  I have replaced the CAB-SS-V35MT,
with no luck. What kind of issues would I see if the cable was too long?
Would I see the issue I am experiencing? I'm getting ready to call
Pacific Cable and order another CAB-VCF.

I saw this type of behavior once with a back-to-back frame relay
configuration.  The connection was working to start with, but then I
upgraded one router to a 12.0(x) release and the two routers stopped
speaking to each other.  The older router was running an 11.1(x)
release.  I upgraded it to a newer release and all was well.

Perhaps you have a similar issue?  Have you tried using HDLC instead of
PPP just to see if the link will stay up?

Remember the AGS has jumper settings on the appliqui to determine if the
interface is DCE or DTE, have you checked that they are set correctly for
your configuration.

Yes, you can.

But there is a case, ISL Trunking will not functon properly.

I do not know other feature will perform properly or not.

May be the new release of IOS will tackle this problem.

Just like wic-2T will not work for Cisco 3600 in 11.xx series, now it work
fine in 12.x.x series.

The URL in my previous email was stripped off somehow.  So, you'll have
to browse CCO yourself.Go to Products, Routers, 2600 Series,
Documentation and dig around there for a bit.  You'll find the available
network modules in that section.

As you'll find out, there is no 10/100 network module for the 2600 series
router. If you want a 10/100 capable router, you'll need a 2620, 2621, 2650
or 2651 router.

Watch the line wrap.  According to that page there is no 10/100 Network
Module available for the 2600 series.  The Fast Ethernet Network Modules
are available for the 3600 series.  If you want Fast Ethernet in the
2600 series you need to have a 2620 or 2621.

Hey Jason Thanks for your help...Now all I have to do is get rid of the
1E2W card..

And i should be in business for my frame switch... Well actually right
now I
can still use one of the wic cards & place it in the fixed slot... the
other fixed slot
is occupied by a smart serial dual port card...so i still have 3 serial
ports for the frame stuff...

I'd rather have @ least 4 though...

If you want to use your 2600 as frame relay switch do as i have done buy a
NM-4a/s, 4t, 8a/s or 8/t.

A 1fe2w only works in 3600.

the NM-1e2w is not supported on the 2600's. Some people seem to get ot
to work under different ios's with varying results. Cisco doesn't
support it, if you manage to get it to work i'd suggest not using it in
a production environment.

2610 has only console and auxiliary ports built in, other than the single
ethernet port.  Are you sure you didn't get a 2610 with a module already
installed?  Perhaps give us a 'show version' readout which will show the
hardware devices in the router.

If you check the cisco site you will find that the 1E2W does nto work in a
2600 series.
The only ethernet modules you can put in a 2600 series is a NM-1E or a
NM-4E.

The 1e2w will work in 3600 series though.

Hi all !!

I have just finished installinga new 1 e 2 w module in my 2610 router &
It's not being recognized, unit allready had an existing Wic 2t plus the
built in ethernet
port. I added the 2t 1e which is actually 2 wic 1 t cards with an
ethernet port on the main module
and it's not being recognized, When i remove the existin wic 2 t cards
only the main ethernet shows up on the show
version..I do see the Act led on the module solid green but nothing on
the sho ver..

Am i mssing something ... do I have to activate this new module somehow
??

Clueless @ this point...

CISCO works 2000 [7:2610]

I am planning to take CISCO works 2000 (both Fundamental and LAN/WAN) in
Chicago. I find there are two training center offering theses classes in
June. One is Global Knowledge the other is Skyline. I called both
training center to ask for information about the instructor, they all
tell me they don't have the instructor list.How can I find out which one
is better? I hate to wast time listen to some boring lectures. I have
some good classes from Global Knowledge. But I also have very bad
experience for two classes I took from this training center.Thanks in

My understanding of 56K serial is that it won't work with a T1 (only with
56K).  It also uses pins 1,2 & 7,8 vs. the T1 pins of 1,2 & 4,5.  I've only
installed one (they seem silly to me, might as well get a fractional T1 at
128K, or just use a stinking modem instead).

My question is, what would be the easiest way to implement it with the rest

Rest of the lab consists of:

was interesting because there were people that said they had it working but
then Cisco didn't "support" it in any of their literature.

I installed one module in the left (labelled W1) and it became S1/0.
So if I put a second module in the right (W0), would the original change to
S1/1 and the new one be S1/0?
Make a right mess of my config.
Sort of wish I'd hung on and tried it now. I'll have to try and dig another
2600 out of spares.

I'd be interested to see what happens with two WIC1T's in but had to get the
router on line before I could get hold of another WIC1T.

Anyone know the reason for this?

ISDN RAS with 2610

Hello Friends...

I have one 2611 and 2610 with 4 port BRI card.
I need to configure 2610 for 8 login sessions in to the router through 4
Port BRI..
I tried some combinations. But. it is not working...

Request anybody give me the necessary configuration plan for this..

All this means is that the new flash simm is not formatted correctly. When
you send the IOS to the flash using tftpdnld, it will format the flash and
all is ok. No problem with the memory

This is exactly what you should expect to see on a 2600 series router if you
don't have an IOS in flash, which you don't because you put a brand new one
in there.  Use the following steps to load an IOS from a tftp server (these
are instructions I gave to my coworkers and assumes the use of our laptop as
a tftp server):

FLASH Memory Upgrade Instructions for 2600 Series Routers

Before you even start, make sure the IOS you want to install on the router
exists on the laptop!

1. Open  router, remove existing FLASH, insert new FLASH
2. Turn router power on.  Send a  to get to Rommon mode.
3. Connect laptop to switch/hub and take note of its IP address
4. Set the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for the router:

rommon >  IP_ADDRESS=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(Same subnet as laptop)
rommon >  IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon >  DEFAULT_GATEWAY=
rommon >  TFTP_SERVER=
rommon >  TFTP_FILE=

5. Begin the TFTP download:

rommon >  tftpdnld (must be lower case)

Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to set the speed/duplex
setting of the Ethernet port.  For this, do the following:

   rommon >  FE_SPEED_MODE = x  

0 = 10 Mbps, half duplex
1 = 10 Mbps, full duplex
2 = 100 Mbps, half duplex
3 = 100 Mbps, full duplex

6.  Type ‘i’ or ‘reset’ to restart the router with the new image.
