Possibly, except for the smart compression algorithm.

If you are only doing DVDs, then all you need is Popcorn and MTR.

4X has been confirmed to work using a UJ-845.

My 2X confirmation was using a DVR-K05.

I have no reason to doubt that the DVR-K05 will do 4X as well.

>>Actually the Pismo will burn DVDs okay, just at slower speeds.

The 2X write test with the Pioneer DVR-K05 and the Pismo worked perfectly.

2X write was explicitly selected, overriding "best" write rate, although
it appeared that the actual writing took less than one-half of the entire
program's length. The test source was a movie which took the entire
single-layer media.

I noticed that even though the drives are rated 2.4X for dual-layer
media, Roxio products use 2X.

Or, perhaps that is a characteristic of those products ... displaying 2X
even though 2.4X was used.

Since dual-layer media is costing about $3.25 per unit, and single-layer
media is costing about $0.25 per unit, I'll likely defer dual-layer
internal testing for a later time.

For now, I am pleased with 2X internal EIDE/UATA write and 8X external
Firewire write.

I believe reading and verification was done at "best" speed, but I have
not confirmed that beyond reasonable doubt.

I'm a stickler for stability, and I detest "coasters".

If I could consistently get good DVD burns at 2X, using a Pioneer DVR-K05
or Panasonic UJ-845 in the Lombard and Pismo, then I would be satisfied
for "run and gun" DVD burning, on an occasional basis, with a fallback to
USB or Firewire, for stationary use, at the fastest possible speed,
depending upon what the rate limiting factor was, interface or drive.

I guess I'll buy a USB + Firewire case this coming week, that way it will
be usable on either the Lombard (USB only) or the Pismo (USB and/or
Firewire).

I am very pleased with the results with the Pioneer DVR-109 (now replaced
by the DVR-110), the Pioneer DVR-K05, and the Panasonic UJ-845, when used
in my B&W G3/450.

I am also very pleased with the results of the Pioneer DVR-109 in my old
Firewire-only case.

I trust the DVR-109 or DVR-110 will work as well in the new USB +
Firewire case.

That way, I'll be pleased pretty much all around.

Actually the Pismo will burn DVDs okay, just at slower speeds.
Depends on your setup, portability needs, etc. External firewire will

Panasonic UJ-811B in my Pismo and it burned movies to DVD-R's okay.
Was able to read those movies on the same drive and on a home DVD

The Panasonic drives have the advantage of being tray-loaders that
can use the original Panasonic DVD-Rom drive bezel from the Pismo

Success!

The route to same is through Firefire attachment of a fast drive, and
PatchBurn to add the Pioneer DVR-109 drive's parameters.

The Firewire case was a generic model with an Oxford 911 chip set [ * ]
with an 80-wire/40-pin internal cable.

The case cost $39.95 at one of the "usual suspect" surplus shops in and
around Silly Cone Valley.

I used Popcorn under 10.3.9 on a 500 MHz Pismo with a 60 GB Hitachi/IBM
5K80 drive for intermediate storage, and 512 MB of RAM.

Perfect reading of the source DVD, and perfect writing and verification
of same.

Immediately played the duplicate on the Pioneer DVR-K05 which was in the
media bay, using DVD Player.

So ...

The route to trouble-free, perfect DVD operations on a Pismo (and by
implication on a Lombard, although a USB 1 or a Firewire card would be
required) is through an external Firewire case and drive.

As there are good USB + Firewire cases available, I would go that way.
Probably about $50-$60.

And ...

Perhaps just upgrade the Pismo's media bay to CD-ROM-R-R/W and DVD-ROM.
It definitely will not do a DVD-R or R/W, most likely on account of
imperfect grounding or other flaws in the electrical interface from the
drive to the motherboard.

[ * ] Unfortunately given this name, before the WTC disaster. I believe
there is now an improved Oxford chip available, one which properly
supports 48-bit LBA, but this particular 911 chip had an enhanced
firmware image, specifically for support of at least 160 GB drives.

Posible, as these are very fast drives, and will burn a dual-layer DVD at
2.4X, and a single-layer DVD at 8X.

Those date rates are just too high for the flimsy interconnection
provided to the Lombard and Pismo media bay.

Forcing burning down to 2X might be a possible option.

I notice that my Firewire case has an 80-wire/40-pin cable from the

Re: Burning DVD's on a Pismo

2005-09-17 Thread csean

Obviously the first thing I need is the DVD burner. Probably will go
with the internal. But I was wondering if I had enough horsepower to
accomplish this. Anybody out there burning DVDs on a Pismo? What
upgrades would help the most? G3 900 or G4 500? More RAM? Faster hard
drive speed?

I added a +/- two-layer CD/DVD drive compatible with 10.3 and 10.4
(Pioneer

DVR-K05) to my Lombard and Pismo.

All CD operations are OK.

DVD playing is OK.

I have never successfully created a DVD, in toto, but I have
created partial

DVDs.

The problem might be that your DVD burner is too recent, too
powerful, etc. I had an internal DVD on my Pismo G3/500 back in the
day and it worked okay. IIRC it was a Panasonic UJ-811B and burnt DVD-
R at 2x, so not too fast. But it certainly worked, as I was able to
burn movies with Toast 5, after ripping them with DVD Backup (IIRC)
and DVD2oneX. Took about 20-25 minutes to burn the movie.
The nice thing about the 811B was that its bezel fit the original
Pismo DVD (also Panasonic Matsushita) perfectly. DVD playing was fine
and CD burning too. I never did any data backups to DVD though.
I think a G4 processor upgrade would be helpful, though it's getting
less and less cost effective nowadays as prices on new G4 iBooks drop
and on used G4 powerbooks tumble.
I loved the black of the Pismo and its solid feel, not to mention of
course its easy upgradeability. Loved the expansion bay slots! And so
easy to open up.
If that company that made those "macskinz" (IIRC) was still selling
them I'd love to try a new G4 iBook and slap a black "coating" over
it; not only protective, but also harking back to the mythical Pismo.
Not too crazy about white. So let's hope the new black iPod Nano
(outselling the white one about 8 to 1, I heard) is a sign of blacker
things to come from Apple in the portable computer market too. I'd
love a powerbook inside that black 13.3" widescreen Sony Vaio!

Re: Burning DVD's on a Pismo

2005-09-16 Thread Daniel Colwell
Thanks to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and Henry Taylor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
for responding.

Apparently an external burner works, and I may have to go that route.
Not exactly what I wanted, but I can live with this. Of course an
internal option would be nice. Anybody using any other type of drive
that successfully burns DVDs internally on the Pismo?

And how about software? I have a copy of Final Cut Pro that I was able
to tweak to run on a G3, but haven't done much of anything with it yet.
What software would work best for me (with any available upgrades) to
edit the incoming analog video? I am toying with the idea of setting up
a business to transfer VCR tapes to DVDs and would practice on my
family's tapes first. What setup is being successfully used to make the
transfer? Digital Camcorder? ADS Tech PRO A/V Link?

And again if any of the Pismo upgrades were of significant help, please
let me know. I have a few extra dollars burning a hole in my pocket and
telling my wife it is part of a business plan and recommended might
help get an OK for this cash outlay. (yeah, and maybe not but I'll try
anyway...)

Again, thanks for any input,

Dan-

I added a +/- two-layer CD/DVD drive compatible with 10.3 and 10.4
(Pioneer

DVR-K05) to my Lombard and Pismo.

All CD operations are OK.

DVD playing is OK.

I have never successfully created a DVD, in toto, but I have created
partial

DVDs.

The problem appears to be a noisy environment between the DVD drive
and the

motherboard.

Perhaps not enough ground wires.

The drive's manual is quite explicit about DVD writing, stating that
full
performance from the drive *requires* an 80-wire/40-pin UATA/100-type
cable.

The drive itself has no problem creating DVDs in a Blue & White
G3/450, on
the "multiword" bus, which *is* equipped with an 80-wire/40-pin
UATA/100-type
cable, even though it is not otherwise required, as the data rate on
that bus is

limited to 16.67 MB/sec.

I bought an accessory adapter which converts the drive to standard
interface,
and which could be useful in a Firewire case, as well as for testing
in a

desktop or tower. $6.95.

Note that the Pismo and Lombard both have issues with their EIDE/UATA
chips,
and these cannot accept drives which cannot negotiate *down* to lower
ATA

performance levels (the earlier Wallstreets can).

All Samsungs, and many later Hitachi/IBMs and Toshibas are not
compatible

with the Pismo and Lombard.

The Hitachi/IBM 5K80 series, if you can find one, *is* compatible, and
you
will need that storage should you solve the problem of support of the
Pioneer

DVR-K05, or the equally capable Panasonic UJ-845.

My Lombard and Pismo each have a 60 GB Hitachi/IBM 5K80. My
Wallstreets each

have a 40 GB Samsung.

All are 5400 rpm drives with large caches (8 MB?), FDB bearings, and
all the

other "usual suspect" features.

Since the B&W 450 with its 100 MHz bus is about equal to a 400 or 500
MHz
Pismo with its 100 MHz bus, I don't think more than a G3, or more than
400 or 500

MHz is required.

Since the internal option seems to be a no-go, you may want to
consider an

external Firewire option instead.

WegenerMedia has a pretty tempting offer on the G4 500 upgrade.

My main projects will be converting VCR tapes over to DVD and

Re: Burning DVD's on a Pismo

2005-09-15 Thread PeterH5322

drive speed?
>>

I added a +/- two-layer CD/DVD drive compatible with 10.3 and 10.4 (Pioneer
DVR-K05) to my Lombard and Pismo.

All CD operations are OK.

DVD playing is OK.

I have never successfully created a DVD, in toto, but I have created partial
DVDs.

The problem appears to be a noisy environment between the DVD drive and the
motherboard.

Perhaps not enough ground wires.

The drive's manual is quite explicit about DVD writing, stating that full
performance from the drive *requires* an 80-wire/40-pin UATA/100-type cable.

The drive itself has no problem creating DVDs in a Blue & White G3/450, on
the "multiword" bus, which *is* equipped with an 80-wire/40-pin UATA/100-type
cable, even though it is not otherwise required, as the data rate on that bus
is
limited to 16.67 MB/sec.

I bought an accessory adapter which converts the drive to standard interface,
and which could be useful in a Firewire case, as well as for testing in a
desktop or tower. $6.95.

Note that the Pismo and Lombard both have issues with their EIDE/UATA chips,
and these cannot accept drives which cannot negotiate *down* to lower ATA
performance levels (the earlier Wallstreets can).

All Samsungs, and many later Hitachi/IBMs and Toshibas are not compatible
with the Pismo and Lombard.

The Hitachi/IBM 5K80 series, if you can find one, *is* compatible, and you
will need that storage should you solve the problem of support of the Pioneer
DVR-K05, or the equally capable Panasonic UJ-845.

My Lombard and Pismo each have a 60 GB Hitachi/IBM 5K80. My Wallstreets each
have a 40 GB Samsung.

All are 5400 rpm drives with large caches (8 MB?), FDB bearings, and all the
other "usual suspect" features.

Since the B&W 450 with its 100 MHz bus is about equal to a 400 or 500 MHz
Pismo with its 100 MHz bus, I don't think more than a G3, or more than 400 or
500
MHz is required.

The faster CPU could be of use if you are using Mac The Ripper to "rip" DVDs
and then burn unprotected copies which are downsampled (compressed) to fit on
a one-layer DVD.

The time to do such compression on a 450 MHz machine with a 100 MHz bus is
about equal to the running time of the movie itself.

Converting the 2 hr 40 min "The High and the Mighty" from dual-layer to
one-layer took 2 hrs and 40 min, not including the initial reading of the
chapters,
or the verification of the DVD. This, on the B&W, of course.

Since the internal option seems to be a no-go, you may want to consider an
external Firewire option instead.

Burning DVD's on a Pismo

2005-09-15 Thread Daniel Colwell

I have a Pismo 400MHz, 768 RAM, 40G running 10.3.9.

Obviously the first thing I need is the DVD burner. Probably will go
with the internal. But I was wondering if I had enough horsepower to
accomplish this. Anybody out there burning DVDs on a Pismo? What
upgrades would help the most? G3 900 or G4 500? More RAM? Faster hard
drive speed?

I am happy with my Pismo, and will probably wait for the equivalent of
a G5 laptop before I replace it. Or maybe not if I have to put so much
$ into this to make editing and burning DVDs practical

WegenerMedia has a pretty tempting offer on the G4 500 upgrade.

My main projects will be converting VCR tapes over to DVD and editing
them with chapters and possible background music. We have a bunch of
tapes and photos that I want to get on DVDs to look nice, share and
preserve. I'd like to use my current laptop but I want to see what is
possible before I spend too much.

Please let me know of your experiences.

Thanks!

Dan-

If it's an LG drive, it's probably gone the way of most pismo LG drives.
Sorry.

When mine died (again) recently, the system log showed a lot of
instances of the error 'IOATAController device blocking bus' in the
weeks leading up to its demise, even when it appeared to be working
fine. So that might confirm the diagnosis.

Device control is integrated into the system. The device is always ready.
You put a disk in and it should appear on the desktop. I am assuming here
that we are talking about an internal CD/DVD drive. If it suddenly stopped
reading any disk, then I guess there is a problem with it. If you have
another CD/DVD drive in another Mac, you can try those disks there just to
be sure.

Hi all,

It's the last days for a great deal.

Yep, it has to go. My best friend, a G3 400 Mhz Powerbook Pismo in very good

Case in good condition, shows some wear but nothing major. IR port window
missing (of course). Power supply (YoYo), Screen and Keyboard in very good
condition. Was running OS 9.1. Drive is clean and has been wiped and zeroed.
Ran Apple hardware test and it passed all tests. No OS on drive and no OS

supplied). Great for second Powerbook or rebuild with bigger drive and ram
or use for parts (N! How could you think of cutting up my friend).
Will also include a VG Carry bag (Targa), spare 4Gb 2.5"hard drive and some
cables (Usb, modem and what else I can find to add).

Re: Pismo > LCD update.

2005-09-07 Thread Stuart Saunders
I finally got the Pismo connected - using an S-Video cable it works
well.
Not sure what the problem is / was, but I did get it working (pretty
poor picture tho') when a tech plugged the VGA cable back in while I
was also testing the S-video - RCA adapter that came with the Pismo. I
was worried that we might get shorted - smoke etc but then (a) picture
came through. Disconnect either cable & the picture would disappear!
VGA has worked with another LCD projector and also a VGA monitor.

Two cable solution would not be workable (mainly due to quality) so I
got an S-Video > S-Video cable - works very well, first time.

Using Mail.app you can set it to save a copy of mail you've read
locally.

The main difference between IMAP and POP is that you primary mail
store lives on the server.

If you make changes on one computer, the next time you connect with
another computer it will synchronize with the server first. Deleted
messages are gone already. All your systems are up-to-date
automatically (when connected). All your systems have the same folder
structure.

I like it, but then I routinely use three or four different computers
to read my e-mail.

IMAP with cached local copies is very much like POP with mail left on
the server, except all the synchronization hassles are handled
automatically, which REALLY sounds like what you want to do.

The 'real' copy of the e-mail is always on the server, where it
should be, IMO, where it's backed up and on good stable systems.

Now it's a hassle for accidentally deleted mails, because once gone
they're generally really gone, but backups can handle that as well.

Why not use a USB card reader plugged into the Lombard (or a Pismo).
Or simpler is to use a memory stick.

I'm trying to avoid projecting parts on the laptop.
I already worry about the cisco wireless card getting hit, a USB memory
stick would be just as bad.
Incidentally my Sandisk 1Gb Cruzer mini USB memory stick has worked in
my Lombard under OS 9 and 10. It's PC formatted but the files work
fine.
With a Pismo I would use the internal wireless card with a compact

Pismos are cool, I need to find a barebones model and swap all my

I'm more interested in range (the cisco card won't work in a few

I guess the original airport card doesn't support more advanced

when travelling.

Why not use a USB card reader plugged into the Lombard (or a Pismo).
Or simpler is to use a memory stick.

Call me crazy, but why not just use IMAP or uncheck the "Remove copy

Re: Airport range with Pismo (internal vs external)?

2005-09-06 Thread Robert Eye
The (original) Airport card is essentially the same
(internally and performance-wise) as the Lucent PCMCIA
cards, except the pin/antenna configurations are
different. Although I have no direct experience, it
seems from what I have read that the older PBs and the
original iBook have the best range w/Airport cards. I
don't know about a comparison between Airport and
PCMCIA cards.

(IIRC, don't the later versions of the Airport sw
update the encription firmware in the card to 128
bit?)

For the cost (!!) of Airport cards on eBay, though, a
wireless USB may be the better solution. The D-Link
DWL-122 was, I believe, the only officially supported
USB wirless stick for the Mac (the Belkin F5D6050 was
supported, too, but it's not a stick, but a wired unit
with antenna - works great on my original Bondi iMac),
and only had OS X drivers. Some of these are available
on eBay for 1/3 the cost of an Airport card (!). The
successor, the DWL-G122, does NOT have Mac drivers,
and I believe is a different chip set.

Oops, forgot about the USB stick from MacWirless.com
for $100 - they say up front that some people have had
problems with the OS X driver. Check their site:

<http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/11g_11b_cards/11bUSB.html>

There are a couple other USB sticks available with
hacked drivers; I'll see if I can dig up more if
you're interested. Ralink Corp has come up with some
OS X drivers for USB wireless parts that use their
chipset:

<http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm>

You might check their forums for info on the brands
supported.

Here's another site for wireless cards/USB sticks with
available driver support under OS X:

<http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm>

I'm exploring the same option for a Tangerine iBook I
just bought off eBay w/o an Airport card (should have
held out for one that had the card). Mac OS 9 support
is *especially* difficult to find for 3rd party USB
sticks. I think the macwireless stick is the only one
with OS 9 support.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX

P.S. If anyone has a good source of Airport cards for
a *reasonable* price, please forward. Thanks.

either leave the 3rd screw out (the tray still works fine) or, as
some people have done, drill a 3rd hold in the plastic (far away from

I've done this on a Pismo with a UJ-810 and a UJ-811, and it looks
great.

While this is completely true, Panasonic has reportedly

of the drives mentioned, in favor of the UJ-845-B.

It is the UJ/UJDA-8xx (where xx is 10, 20, 30, etcetera, but *not* 45)
which is completely compatible with the bezel of the Mac PBs, as
described above.

Don't know about what's been discontinued or not, but the drives are
easy to find on ebay. The important thing, as I mentioned, is to get
a TRAY-loading model. The UJ-845 is a slot-loader, which does work
fine in the Pismo, but obviously you can't use the original bezel
At least, not without cutting a slot in it! Though it should be noted
further that some online stores (MCE, Wegener Media, etc.) do sell
slot-loading drives for the Pismo with a Pismo bezel on them.
Probably custom-made, custom-cut solutions.

Re: Hard drive for Pismo

2005-09-02 Thread PeterH5322

>I just purchased and installed an 80Gb Travelstar from Newegg.com for a
>total price of $112 including shippi;ng.

Lombard and Pismo machines have issues with their EIDE/UATA controller
chips which mandate that the attached drives be fully able to negotiate
down from ATA-6.

The Samsungs, some Toshibas and perhaps the new Hitachi/IBMs will not
properly negotiate.

Certain old Toshibas (up to about 10 GB) and the 5K80 series of
Hitachi/IBMs will properly negotiate.

There are better deals on Hitachi/IBMs than Newegg.com (I have bought
several Samsungs for my Wallstreets from them, and one 5K80 Hitachi/IBM
from them, too).

BestBuyPC, for example, *may* substitute a later series for the 5K80, at
their whim.

Two orders placed with BestBuyPC a few days apart resulted in the first
one being a newer Hitachi/IBM, as a substitute *without notice*, and
defective to boot, and the second one being a 5K80.

The "sweet spot" on 2.5" drives is at 60 GB right now, and those wanting
less than 60 GB, or more than 60 GB, may be paying a premium price per GB
for their drives.

I have actually encountered situations where a 20 GB drive cost more than
a 30 GB drive from the same drive series and from the same retail seller.

Newegg.com is good in that their shipping in certain select items is very
low priced.

The same is true of BestBuyPC.

Incidentally, BestBuyPC is one source of replacement optical drives for
Lombards and Pismos (and for the MCE optical drive bays for the
Wallstreets). There are others. Depending upon availability, $105 could
get you a +/-, read/write/rewrite, CD/DVD drive with two-layer support.
Alas, the laptop's EIDE/UATA controller chips seem not to be up to the
job of successfully burning DVDs on a consistent basis.

buy and 'try' to install it. It's going to set me back about $190.

When my original pismo CD/DVD drive died, we replaced it with the Sony

remember where. You'll need to keep your original tray, and install the

CD burner onboard for the price of a replacement read only drive.

Hard drive for Pismo

2005-09-02 Thread Ed Zelinsky

60gb Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" 9.5mm 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, ATA/ 6
12.0ms 8MB Buffer

Is this a good HD for my Pismo. I just want a reality check before I
buy and 'try' to install it. It's going to set me back about $190.

Thanks for any feedback.

Many Matshita tray-loading DVD-R burners from the UJ-810/811/etc.
series can use the original Matshita bezel from the DVD read only
drive. Both have 3 small screws and 2 line up perfetcly; you can
either leave the 3rd screw out (the tray still works fine) or, as
some people have done, drill a 3rd hold in the plastic (far away from
the mechanism, so not TOO risky) that lines up with the 3rd screw.
I've done this on a Pismo with a UJ-810 and a UJ-811, and it looks
great.

I then got to move from a lombard to the pismo my wife was using:-)

Re: Pismo DVD/CD drive ???

2005-08-31 Thread Robert Eye
Go to

http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso

and search the drive compatibility database. Over 100
entries for Combo DVD-CDR (under Select a Mac Model,
use PowerBook G3 2000 Rage128 Mobility). At least one
mention there about the "quality" of the LM drive.

Most all of the entries are for the expansion bay -
having never owned a Pismo, I assume this is the most
common way of integrating this type of drive?

You might try these guys for a replacement drive

http://www.centrix-intl.com/fulllist.asp

I haven't used them and have no financial interest in
them; I found them while looking for a CDRW to put in
my son's new (to him) clamshell iBook (I was planning
on buying one from them, but my son decided he didn't
need/want CDRW capability).

Just because these drives are "obsolete" from a
production standpoint, there's no reason to not use
the drive (new or "pre-owned"). Heck, the Pismo is
"obsolete."

I once had a similar experience, where the S-video out of my TiBook

colleague's iBook were at fault, but the vga cable was bad. Since
then I've given many classes in the same lecture hall with my TiBook

I would NOT assume that the fault lies with the mac. Issues like
resolution are more likely to be causing that problem.

The MATSHITA (Panasonic) drive in the machine is obsolete, and Panasonic is
not making any more tray loading drives.

Every one has been replaced by the UJ-845-B, which is a slot loader, is +/-
everything, and is two-layer DVD-R-R/W.

Sadly, this isn't on Apple's "approved" list, so you will have to use
PatchBurn to support it.

A perhaps better choice is the Pioneer DVR-K05, which IS supported by 10.4,
but is not by 10.3 without PatchBurn.

This Pioneer drive has a tray loading variant.

I have both of these drives in my Lombard and Pismo, and they are fine for
DVD playing and CD reading and writing, but I have yet to successfully burn a
DVD with these.

The "fine print" on these drives is they work best with an 80-wire/40-pin
cable, but that is NOT the way they can be installed in a laptop, although
there
ARE adapters which are intended for installing these drives in "Shuttle" type
PeeCees, and which DO support 80-wire/40-pin cables.

Perhaps this is the old multiword vs DMA issue with some of the PowerPCs?

Anyway, I know of no currently manufactured drive which will accept the
Lombard/Pismo bezel, and the same is true of the MCE drives for the Wallstreet.

The tray loading Pioneer drive (DVR-K15?) is just enough different in the
bezel attachment area that is is a NO-GO.

I had a problem at a scuba club meeting; the presenter had a 12" PB

brought my 17"; my display connect would also not work, but I was
able to use my S-video port. We networked the 2 machines & I ran her

We never did get the video out working with that projector, though
I've had no problem with other projectors.

Re: Pismo > Panasonic LCD

2005-08-30 Thread Robert Eye
Sometimes projectors seem to be particular about the
resolution they are trying to project; the laptop and
the projector have to match. We've had some
difficulties at monthly meetings getting the
presenter's personal laptops to connect to our
projector (a Dell labeled projector - not sure if it's
LCD or DLS). All encounters here are with
Windows-based laptops.

I assume your Pismo works with other projectors and
external monitors?

I remember Apple's commercial where a Windows laptop
can't do the job during a presentation, and the
members of the audience are calling out various
suggestions to fix the problem. The last suggestion
was "Get a Macintosh."

Pismo > Panasonic LCD

2005-08-30 Thread Stuart Saunders

There I was with my brilliant Keynote presentation and eager audience.

Could not get contact between Pismo and the Panasonic LCD. Cable was
the the same at each end, fitted the 15 pin D connector on the back of
the Pismo. I tried shutting down each, restarting each simultaneously,
and then each one first, etc, etc, per "help" instructions, but could
not get a hint of connection apart from the led on the LCD blinking
briefly when I clicked on 'detect displays' in System Preferences >
Displays.

Only gave a precis of my talk, unaided, hopefully can connect &
present another day.

Luckily crowd was very polite, only heard one muttering of "must be
Apple computers". Could not find the book for the LCD, not sure it
would have been in English if I had found it!

Anybody know what I was doing wrong?

TIA,
Stuart.

The primary criterion is whether the Mac is "OldWorld" (Openfirmware version
<3) or "NewWorld" (OpenFirmware version >= 3)
The pismo and all models of ibook are New World systems. Any PPC version of
linux will boot and install on any New World system. It's possible that
certain components of certain models may not be as well supported as under
OSX, but you will be able to install Linux.
Here's a list of different linux versions: http://www.penguinppc.org/about/dis
tributions.php

I played withe Ubuntu version 5.0.4 on my 366 Clamshell and it's
pretty cool for a freebie. And they send you CD's for free. I have
several if anyoe wants one. I also have a few exrta x86 versions as
well.

The CD comes with a "live" CD also which is a bootable CD that you can
see what Ubuntu is like.

Slot loaders are the easiest to upgrade to.

You MUST use a 12.7mm drive. A 9.5mm drive will not fit properly.

The Panasonic 2-layer writer is OK on 9 (and Toast) but needs PatchBurn
for X (and Finder level burning).

The Pioneer 2-layer writer is OK, too, and is supported on 10.4 without
PatchBurn and on 10.3 with PatchBurn.

PatchBurn appears to be necessary to play +R DVDs which have been burned
on appliance-type recorders, but -R DVDs (obsolete in my shop) and
manufactured DVDs work without PatchBurn.

The Panasonic type tray bezel, say, one salvaged from your old drive,
will not fit a Pioneer tray loading drive, and Panasonic doesn't make a
tray loader any more.

Replace the mechanism.

I'd wager it is a DRN-8080 - they are very unreliable.

Buy another mechanism and slot it in place and you are away.

You can fit any other drive in the module (just about) but the bezel won't
fit unless you match the mechanism.

Is this a common problem with these computers.

Neither one of us have had any luck find a suggestion as to what

Model M7931. They have been used very little. Tiger needs a DVD to

Pismo internal hard drive won't spin up

2005-08-06 Thread Jan Georgen
I posted much of the following to the Apple PowerBook Usage
discussion, am also

trying here in search of much needed help!

I replaced the sound/ac card and the power switch in a 400mHz Pismo.
The computer chimes and I can get the screen to light up with both AC
and//or a battery (the battery also charges). The internal hard drive
will not, however, spin up.

So I pulled the hard drive out of my 500mHz Pismo, 1 gig RAM (drive
previously known to work) and tried to boot from it, same result. I
then pulled the internal hard drive out and inserted my expansion bay
hard drive (Yes! I have one of those great old rarities that
currently houses a 60gig 5400rpm drive!) and the computer booted.

This morning I returned my hard drive to my Pismo and got the same
results as with the 400mHz Pismo: no spinning, only the grey screen.
If I try to boot into target mode, my computer shuts down. Also, as
long as the internal drive is connected, my expansion bay drives
(hard drive + CD-ROM) do nothing. I ran Disk Utility on the drive
(after placing it in an external case and mounting it to my Sawtooth)
and got the 'okay' but when I tried Disk Warrior, I was informed that
the directory was way too messed up to fix. The drive does, however,
mount when in the external case and I was able to copy all of my
documents etc. to another drive (whew).

I am stumped. Could there be something with the sound/ac card that
provides power to everything else, but not the internal hard drive?
Can the internal ATA somehow short and screw up the hard drive
ribbon? Or might I have missed a wire/connection??

Or

Any ideas will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

quicktime 7·0·1 on Pismo

2005-08-04 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hey Dan & G-bookers

I have a Pismo 400MHz, 768 RAM, 40G HD running OS 10.3.9. Will I have
any problems updating from Quicktime 6.5.2 to Quicktime 7.0.1?
Will it be an improvement? I have noticed my Quicktime Player to be
somewhat slow at times, but that may just be my "slow" computer.

I haven't noticed any performance difference
moving up to 7·0·1 under 10·3·9 on my 400MHz
Pismo. I think there's something about if you
already have the 'pro' (i.e paid for) version of
Quicktime and upgrade to this version, then
you'll have to pay again to get the 'pro' version
of 7·0·1.

interested to hear how you get on

Bruce

The actual fluoruoescent bulb in each display is the same. For that matter,
it appears to be the same in every 14" display I have taken apart. It can be
removed with a #00 philips screwdriver, you have to take apart the actual
metal frame of the LCD. And yes, it's a job that can be done at home. If you
can get to the point where the LCD is out of the housing, you can do this
too.

Completely Naive Video RAM Question (Pismo)

2005-07-30 Thread Barry Muller
I recnetly got a great deal on a 400 MHz Pismo with a
bad battery and as it turns out a bad HD. I've
upgraded to a Hitachi 40 GB HD and added an Airport
Card and couldn't be happier with this Mac, except for
the 8 MB Video limit.

Seems that back in the day of the the Performa Macs I
read that the RAM you got was partially used for video
- so you really didn't have 32 MB (or whatever)
available for (non-video) memory.

Fast forward to today ... My Pismo has 576 MB RAM, is
there a compelling reason that a clever person
couldn't figure out a way to use some of that for
video?

Like I said in the subject "Naive". I await the
flames ... ;-)

The Pismo does have a temperature sensor, but something was changed in
one of the 10.3.x updates that made it impossible for Temperature
Monitor and other utilities to read from it. The fan will go on when it
overheats. I find mine overheats (both when it was a 500MHz G3 and now
as a 550MHz G4) when (a) there is intense disk activity, such as
copying multi-GBs or installing System software (which is annoying, but
nothing I can do about the latter so I just leave the room); and (b)
when certain apps hog the CPU. When the fan starts screaming during
normal use, I open Activity Monitor to see which is the culprit;
usually it's Safari suddenly using 70-90% of the CPU; I look through
the pages I have open and close any that look suspicious (one that
consistently causes this problem is the International Herald Tribune
<http://www.iht.com>) until Safari retires back to its customary
10-20%, then after a while the fan will shut up. Another CPU hog is
Canon's CanoScan utility; some kind of sloppy coding, I guess.

The Pismo does have a temperature sensor, in hardware, connected to
the fan system. But both these programs come with caveats that they
don't necessarily detect all of them.

Upgrade Orinoco OEM card, Was Re: Pismo wireless questions

2005-07-26 Thread Kenneth Vann
Would it be possible to use the Airport Base Station to up upgrade a OEM
version (Dell, Sony, IBM, ect) of the Orinoco Silver Card?

I am assuming that one would need a Snow Base Station. Perhaps using a
Graphite would upgrade an OEM card to one that is listed as a Silver card.

The Orinoco software will list the card as a Gold/Silver or third party.

Any info or links would be helpful. I have both a Graphite and Snow I can use.

Thanks

Under OS 9 either will do.

there are third party OS X drivers; Airport software won't work.

Yes. You can upgrade it to 'Gold status that way, although getting it

4. Will this Orinoco card allow me to connect to an Airport base

Yes, 802.11b is 802.11b...the Silver card needs to use the 64n Bit

5. If I have this card and buy an Airport Base station with the

Thanks.

Nope, that's how I'm sending this right now, save I'm using a Airport

turn on printer sharing in classic.
Set up printer on the OS 9 machine. You should now be able to print
from the OS 9 machine.

You can share printers in 9 or X but not between 9 and X.

such as the Airport drivers?

3. Is this the card that can be 'set to a higher enryption level' by
inserting it into an ibook Airport slot and opening the Airport
software to configure it, according to the website listed here
several times?

4. Will this Orinoco card allow me to connect to an Airport base
station? (is there any difference in use for a Pismo between the
'graphite' and 'snow' base stations I see listed on the swap list?

5. If I have this card and buy an Airport Base station with the modem
included, is there anything else I would need to buy to connect to a
dial in internet connection?

Thanks.

Pismo and Windows mp3 player/ software question

2005-07-23 Thread kaldav
I am setting up a Pismo for Windows user who has a Windows mp3
player. I have been asked if this will work on the Pismo. Hopefully
someone can give me a definitive answer.

1. The person bought an mp3 player about two years ago (it may be
called a Lyra). The player is listed as compatible with Windows 98E,
XP, ME, or 2000. The person wants to use the software to transfer
music from the CDs she owns to this mp3 player, rather than
downloading music from the internet.
Would this mp3 player work on the Mac if the software CD was
installed through Virtual PC v6.1?

2. The software CD is 'Music Management Software' by RCA. The program
is 'Musicmatch'. I was wondering if iTunes software ever had luck
connecting with other mp3 players, rather than an ipod?

3. Or, can she insert her audio CD and copy a song to itunes, then
somehow export it to the Windows mp3 player? What is the .extension
for mp3 players of the Windows variety (.mp3 or m4a)?

The PowerBook Guy has a great selection, but he's a wee bit expensive;
I don't think I've ever bought anything from him, as I can usually find
better sources. In any case, I can get the bulb; see below.

From what I've read (see below) the pink/red color is mostly likely the
bulb growing old; of course replacing the whole display with one with a
good bulb would fix it.

I've owned my Pismo since new and I think I've spent at least 1500 in
additional repairs and upgrades to it. By far compared with my 17"

Indeed, I'm very fond of mine, but am thinking seriously of moving up
to a 17" G4, for added display space and power. I haven't tried 10.4
yet, but although a recent upgrade to 550MHz G4 considerably enhanced
the Pismo's ability to work with OS X, it's still frustratingly slow at
times. I'll certainly miss the Pismo's ergonomics, especially the
one-hand trackpad; the G4 PBs' design is very snazzy looking, but less
usable, requiring two hands for the trackpad, which is annoying.

Thanks for the responses to my query. I was wondering if there might be
any new information in the user community since the last time I
researched this. For any who might be interested, here's the

Not sure of the details yet, but at this price I'd rather pay to have
it done than try to do it myself; I've taken apart a lot of PowerBooks,
but dismantling display panel assemblies is more stress than I'd care
to deal with. Used to do my own auto tuneups, too, but now I pay a real
mechanic who can do in an hour what took me an afternoon.

I actually have two more 'Pismo' PowerBooks, in addition to my own
trusty companion (which has a 550MHz G4, 40GB HD, 640MB RAM), which I'm
preparing to sell; at least one will also need the bulb replaced. As
for take-apart, I have the Apple service manual, and excellent

Re: New to list with questions on Pismo

2005-07-18 Thread tharbad
1) Yes you can... Tiger is recommended for those jumping into the fray.
Remember to do the following before installing though: Update the firmware to
the latest (I can't stress this enough), make sure you have at least 128MB of
RAM in there, and get a larger HD. I personally have a 40GB in mine from
Hitachi, and it is smooth and quiet.

2) 128MB is the minimum, although my personal minimum is 320MB. 512MB is
perfect for most use, and 1GB isn't worth the time IMO. You can grab the 256MB
module like you are thinking, which is actually what I did at first, then
swapped out the 64MB module for another 256MB module later when I needed it.

3) Yup. In fact, updating to OS X will enable more functionality on the Airport
card (WPA security which is better than WEP, newer firmware, and so on). Plus,
with it being compatible with 802.11g (Airport Extreme), you shouldn't have any
problems at all.

4) Definitely.

I'm running 10.4.2 on mine, it's fast, reliable and I'm very happy
with it. I also have 512 Mb of RAM.

--What is the minimum amount of memory I can get away with and

That would get you going, sure.

I'm a little unclear as to how this works though. I know there are
two slots. Can I keep the existing 64MB memory chip and add the
256MB module as well to bring it up to 320MB?

You definitely can.

--I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the
newer wireless technology? For example, could I go into Starbucks
and hook into their network using this model?

Yes, no problem. The technology used in the airport (802.11b, WEP) is
still the baseline used by most of the wireless world, certainly in
the public access arena.

--Can I use an iPod mini with this computer? Since I do have the
FireWire port, I'm thinking that I could if I'm able to upgrade to
OS X and install iTunes on my computer.

Certainly. The only iPod you'll have any issues with is the Shuffle,
and then only because synching will be veerryyy
sllooww at USB 1.1 speed.

That said, when I got my shuffle, I hadn't upgraded my USB yet; it
just took a long time to synch.

You've got a nice old Powerbook.

That simply means, for example, that you can't use the keyboard USB

As for the minimum OS, I forgot about that, but since the Pismo runs

Yes, it's a Pismo Firewire model, also sometimes referred to as
Powerbook G3 2000.

It currently has 64MB of memory, which I'd like to increase as

I'm running 10.4.2 on my 400mhz Pismo and it's very snappy and so far
also fairly stable, so I would recommend starting with it. But I
also upgraded to 1GB RAM and a 7200 rpm hard drive (stock drive, if
that's what you have is 4200 rpm).

$200.00 that would require right now.

Yes, you can do that. If you're doing the RAM installation yourself,
be sure to re-seat the processor card very firmly, so much so that it
feels very much like you're doing something wrong and might break
it. You really have to press on it, but do so only in the bottom
right corner. When I upgraded my RAM I didn't know this, didn't have
the processor card seated properly, and freaked out because I thought
I had broken by beloved Pismo. Which brings me to another point,
with which I'm sure someone will disagree. The Pismo is quite simply
the best laptop Apple ever made. It's a great machine, still robust
despite being 5 years old, and very versatile and upgradeable as
well. I love mine and wouldn't part with it for anything.

--I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the

Yes.

Yes.

Also, is there any way to access the archives of previous messages

Yes, see below.

Thanks for any tips or advice--it's greatly appreciated!

Re: New to list with questions on Pismo

That is a Pismo.

It currently has 64MB of memory, which I'd like to increase as
inexpensively as possible. I'd also like to upgrade it to OS X. My
questions are:

--Can I upgrade it to OS X? Which version is the best for this

do this?

You might need a bigger harddisk. You'll need about 5 Gb free or more.

You can go all the way up to Tiger (10.4.2). I would use Panther
(10.3.9) at a minimum.

--What is the minimum amount of memory I can get away with and still
run OS X. My computer needs are pretty basic: cruising the Web,
email, basic word processing, etc. I was thinking of adding a 256MB
module, which I saw for $28.67 at macsolutionsinc.com. I'm a little
unclear as to how this works though. I know there are two slots.
Can I keep the existing 64MB memory chip and add the 256MB module as
well to bring it up to 320MB? I'd love to add two 512MB modules to
bring it up to 1 GB of memory, but I can't afford the $200.00 that
would require right now.

Adding 256 will do. It is the minimum I'd try to work with.

--I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the
newer wireless technology? For example, could I go into Starbucks
and hook into their network using this model?

Sure.

--Can I use an iPod mini with this computer? Since I do have the
FireWire port, I'm thinking that I could if I'm able to upgrade to
OS X and install iTunes on my computer.

Yes. If you were to use an iPod Shuffle you'd need to install 10.3.9
as a minimum but a full iPod or mini will work with earlier versions.

Also, is there any way to access the archives of previous messages
on the list?

It's in the footers, see below.

Thanks for any tips or advice--it's greatly appreciated!

Well, you have a great PowerBook. It will run a lot nicer with more
memory. 512Mb will make it quite a bit more responsive.

If the boot files of the HD are corrupted but the HD still works you
could boot from CD or network then look at your pic files.

Re: Pismo problems help needed ASAP!

2005-07-12 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
Does your hard drive have a partition for OS9 ? or a firewire drive
or the removable 10 Gig hard drives that goes into the expansion bays?
I had those problems about 10.2,.4 OS 9.2.2 ran perfect, even using
Photoshop and a graphics intense game anything I could throw at it.

When trying to start OS X, all the stuff you mentioned are the same
symptoms I had, so I called Apple 6 weeks later, free support off the
10.2 purchase for one of the 3 Pismos and the first guy was not
slurping his soda and sounded pretty on the know. He said that OS X
requires the video chip on it's startup and 8 megs is just barely
enough, he said I might have a weak video chip. Now as far as I know
chips work or do not work. I was a bit skeptic I hate code. So he
said for $350.00 that included shipping they would swap out a M.B.
and you would get a new/used video chip. I went for it and OS X
10.2.4 ran fine but I had to use OS9 for 2 months and found Os 9's
lack of quirkiness a cool glass of ice tea. It just ran fine and
until Panther came out I just used 9. So the weak video chip covered
the whole M.B. and any possibilities.

I also would be of course skeptical of the upgrade first. I am typing
on my Pismo right now, great books. I think the best Apple ever
turned out. So far they can't get me to bite on a new one. I have a
few iBooks 1.2 but I have lugged this pismo everywhere

Good luck
Geoff
