Hi, Andy, the person who started rendering OpenCycleMap a few years ago, now added a worldwide layer with public transportation on it: http://opencyclemap.org/?zoom=12lat=50.86468lon=4.72902layers=0B (updated daily) There is also somebody in Eastern Europe who does the same a bit differently: http://openmap.lt/?zoom=12lat=50.86854lon=4.6813layers=B000FTT (updated weekly) I think this is great and it has me working on those route relations of De Lijn once again. If the local GIS-coordinator talked the way up (meaning in GIS-terms, not in local politics terms) it might be a break-trough for the official geo-data in the whole flemish area, as it is all kept within the same framework... If gis-vlaanderen agreed on the beveren-data, they probably should agree on the whole flemish area. Well, I don't know if the GIS-coordinator talked the way up (probably not). In his initial response, he said to discuss this with the legal department (juridische dienst). I hope they are fully aware of the consequences of the permission. I might contact the GIS-coordinator again (in person) and ask him more about the source of this data and the things you mentioned. [OSM-legal-talk] Import from Ushahidi Libya Instance
You may be aware, UN OCHA has been coordinating a Ushahidi instance to map reports from the the Libya Crisis. http://libyacrisismap.net/. OSM is the base map. They've geocoded about 150 places and POI, and have recruited OSM folks to conflate this list with OpenStreetMap. http://internal.libyacrisismap.net/volunteers/team-geolocation/coordinates-database The issue is that the source for the geocoding is listed, but not always licensed under a license compatible with OSM. Even if locations were derived from non-compatible license sources, my thinking has been that this is non-substantial and non-systematic, and therefore might be permissible to import. Data is only collected based on select needs to geocode reports. The numbers are just over 150. According to the Substantial Guideline of the ODbL, an extract from OSM like this would not trigger the viral terms of the license. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Data_License/Substantial_-_Guideline Question is then twofold. One, we haven't yet adopted the ODbL, so how much could a guideline apply. And two, how does the concept of non-substantial apply to importing data? I think there's a good chance it's ok, in which case all data could be brought in. The alternative would then be to exempt particular POI from conflation, or simply geocode them again using fully clear sources. Thoughts? Re: [OSM-talk] level_crossing, leveled
Unless you operate to peculiar safety standards, there'll probably be a stop sign on the track some way either side of the former crossing(probably set for the stopping distance of the heaviest train operating at linespeed, and taking the gradient into account - which could easily be a mile away). So there'll be quite a length of track that's disused. I'd probably tag the railway as abandoned, and remove the level crossing, if it looks like a permanent situation. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Richard Weait wrote: Any thoughts or widely accepted customs regarding this? I'd use a length of either railway=disused or railway=abandoned. IMX it only takes a year or so for a disused railway, often called OOU in the UK (out of use), to become unsuitable for trains to turn up and go. On occasion the problem is just a bit of overgrowth, but more frequently, there'll be something serious that needs addressing before trains can pass again: signalling, skewed or stolen rails, washed-out trackbed. A bit of tarmac across the rails is probably the least of these problems. So, given that disused means permanent way still largely in place but some work required to get it back in place, I'd be tempted to stick with railway=disused even despite the odd bit of tarmac. [OSM-talk] Tracks and there place in society
I wonder that noone, so far, mentioned that we had similar discussions on talk-de. Please, do not discuss only in GB. The sitiuation is even a bit more complicated because of law (especially for bikes) and we have foot/bicycle=official, too. I stoped using footway or cycleway at all. And do not forget emergencies which could use a track but not a path. Thanks colliar Well in a nutshell, this is the debate, and how every ML conversation on the matter ends up: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g226/ben_robbins_/Tracks-1.png?t=1306366810 It starts in the 'blue' section. It then goes in circles for the best part, or it all ends with the renderer. Either of the 3 points where I have put an exclamation mark (but not the bottom right one) would deal with the problem I think you have described. (Ignore the other one, it was for something else) It's rather amazing the complexity of something so simple! --- So really, going along the lines of 'highway=track; designation=xyz' it just about works, but 3 issues remain. 1) It doesn't render correctly/at all. 2) The assumed access rights of highway=track in a route planner are not clear, and/or a problem as shown in diagram. 3) The need for Highway=byway/bridleway/footway...is there one; again shown in diagram. Any definite answers or advice on these points from anyone? cheers, Ben ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] Tracks and there place in society
Ben - you end up with one of three things: highway=track+tracktype=whatever+designation=public_footpath (or whatever) highway=track+tracktype=whatever highway=track+access=private If it's got a simple private / keep out sign, then use access=private. This renders. Anything else, you can probably access with anything except a private car (not because it's banned, just because of the potential damage). Whether you want to probably depends on the tracktype (which renders) and whether it goes anywhere (which renders). If you want to know about the subtle distinction between a Right of Way and a dunno-seems-to-be-ok track, use the designation tag (or umpteen access tags), and look at Free-map, or render it yourself. In summary - access=private is for tracks that declare themselves to be exclusively for private access, not for things that are merely privately-owned. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] anonymous edits
Hi all, Consider the following application scheme: * a twitter user sends a geo-located tweet containing a specified hashtag, say #addosm and key-value pairs like amenity:pub;name:Red Devil;smoking:yes * a twitter scraper picks up the tweet, archives it and posts a new point using the twitter coordinate and the decoded k-v pairs, plus an additional tag source:twitter[@twitteruser] or something like that. This would be an easy way to add POIs on the go, and could be an interface for mobile applications to post new POIs. This would not be totally anonymous but it's close. I think that's a great idea! However I don't believe it should be directly added to the OSM database, since the POI may already exist, or there could be other problems. Instead why not create an .osm file and allow others to add/merge it to OSM using tools like JOSM? An even better idea might be to piggy back on the bug/note concept, and just create a ticket with the proposed changes. A JOSM plugin, Potlatch, or a custom GUI can pull these bugs/notes and present them to a contributor to add to OSM. All I want to do is to visualize the OSM data for Germany on GeoServer with MySQL DB. The tools I found like Osmosis and osm2sql save the data in a non-spatial schema, that's why GeoServer can't visualize it. Can anybody make a clear statement, whether such tool for MySQL exists? Re: [OSM-talk] anonymous edits
Hi, Martijn van Exel wrote: That is exactly why I started this thread - to see how (un)acceptable it is to do (semi) anonymous edits. An important reason against anonymous edits is accountability. We want to be able to contact someone and ask them: Why did you add that? What did you mean by it? Etc. In order not to burden the mapper, your twitter bot would somehow have to establish bidirectional communiactions between mappers and twitter-ers. If you think you cannot expect the twitter-er to set up an OSM account, then in the same vein you cannot expect the mapper to set up a twitter account. You must make sure that a message sent by a mapper to your twitter bot actually reaches the twitter-er who is the source of the data. This is probably not easy. I was surprised to see the wheelmap construct but I'm sure that was discussed here before it was implemented. Was it? Don't geht the wheelmap visitor thing wrong; the *only* thing that this visitor can do is to set one specific tag to one of three specific values on an already-existing object of a certain type. So, no free-form tagging, no creation of new objects - almost zero risk of vandalism or copyright violation. But even there we have already had problems where an unknown wheelmap visitor changed something that others found worthy of discussion. On the whole, I don't think this twitter thing can fly. We don't want your data (only), we want your soul, and if you cannot be bothered to set up an account (which you will need anyway as soon as you want to make edits rather than just dumping POIs onto us) then maybe OSM is not for you. A twitter-to-openstreetbugs interface, that could work. If there is no legal need to protect the information it should be open to public access. Information publication enhances public access. Agencies should use information technology to disseminate public sector information, applying a presumption of openness and adopting a proactive publication stance. Principle 6: Clear reuse rights The economic and social value of public sector information is enhanced when it is made available for reuse on open licensing terms. The Guidelines on Licensing Public Sector Information for Australian Government Agencies require agencies to decide licensing conditions when publishing information online. The default condition should be the Creative Commons BY standard, as recommended in the Intellectual Property Principles for Australian Government Agencies, that apply to agencies subject to the Financial and Management Accountability Act 1997. [talk-au] Redistricting 2.0: Cloud Lets Voters Take Part
CWmike writes As the 2010 U.S. census results arrived, Los Angeles County's politicians started ramping up for redistricting — the once-a-decade, computing-intensive, often contentious process of geographically carving up the populace into discrete parcels of voters. In the past, such decisions were made by politicians using expensive computer systems and software. Participation in the process was limited to an elite few who could afford experts who understood redistricting's arcane rules and GIS technology well enough to game them. This year, however, it won't just be the politicians and special interest groups poring over the data and tweaking boundary lines. All 4.5 million registered voters in LA County have access to a cloud-based redistricting application called the Public Access Plan that lets voters view and modify existing maps and boundaries, submit comments, and even create and submit their own plans from scratch. LA County is among the first government entities to consider providing Web-based tools that allow for direct public participation. 'This notion of public access has changed quite dramatically,' says Tim Storey, a senior fellow at the National Conference of State Legislatures. 'Throwing that wide open is a big step.' The big question now is whether the public will use it. http://politics.slashdot.org/story/11/05/25/1719206/Redistricting-20-Cloud-Lets-Voters-Take-Part?utm_source=rss1.0utm_medium=feed Ok, not about Australian political boundaries, but why shouldn't our politicians be held to the same accountability.

It has been a while since we've had a mapping party in Toronto focussed on mapping (versus talking about mapping). On June 11'th 2011 we will have mapping party themed Urban Mapping. Cities such as Toronto are filled with things much more interesting than roads. These things need to be on the map. The goal of this mapping party is to survey parts of downtown Toronto to create a better urban map. Examples of things we are going to find include * pubs and restaurants and stores * public telephones and public toilets * benches, water fountains and flower gardens * newspaper boxes and garbage cans * parking lots, bicycle racks and parking meters * Are places wheelchair accessible We will meet at noon at Camaraderie (http://camaraderie.ca/) 102 Adelaide Street East, 2nd floor, then head out mapping. See http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Toronto/June_11_2011_mapping_party for more details. Invite your friends, it will be fun.

[Talk-GB] Electricity generator tagging
We have releases a new Electricity generation map using ITO Map which people might like to look at which colour-codes power stations by fuel source (coal/nuclear etc). Take a look here: http://www.itoworld.com/product/data/ito_map/main?view=106lat=51.822370189439184lon=0.6237611854769254zoom=9 It currently recognises both 'power_source' and 'generator:source'. Generator:source is a newly adopted tag which makes it possible to tag more sorts of generator plant (such as CHP which generate electricity and hot water). Read about it here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/generator_rationalisation Power_source is however still used to a significant degree and is the tagging that Potlatch2 uses. Tom Chance, who did a lot of work on this new tagging schema, has added a trac ticket to Potlatch2 recommending that PotLatch moves to use the new tagging schema for power stations. Can I suggest that we use the new tagging with new power stations going forward and convert power_source to generator:source when we find it. There does seem to be a lot of interest in electricity mapping at present. What is the best way to tag wind farms? Currently one near me has nodes for each turbine with power_source=wind on each one. It seems it would be better to have each one as man_made=wind_turbine or something and group them together with a relation, since the estimated energy output of a wind farm is usually stated as a whole rather than per turbine. It certainly makes sense to map each turbine as a node. Without looking at the tagging schema in detail on the wiki it would seem to be appropriate to be able to mark each actual turbine with its maximum rated output and then have some way in the relation to indicate typical and maximum output from the array. If no maximum is given then the down-stream system should assume the maximum is the summation of the maximums of the individuals. Would it be useful to have 'generator:output:electricity:peak' and a 'generator:output:electricity:mean' for the overall windfarm? I have noticed recently that substations can come in various forms which include transmission, distribution and collector. They give the example of a wind farm for the 'collector' substation. Should we used substation= for that information? More details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_substation We will be adding node features to ITO Map in due course btw.
