It's in the registry. In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat! there
is a key Last backup path. It should be safe to change the value and
restart The Bat!.

Bug in Automatic Backup

2008-08-22 Thread Mr Happy
Hi,

With a previous The Bat installation, I had the automatic backup set
to run at 1300 hours and to backup to the E drive. That was quite a
long time ago. Since that time, I have reinstalled Windows and The Bat
a few times, but have always kept the same message base (and I think
this is the cause of the problem). Now, The Bat continues to want to
backup at 1300, and pops up an error message when it can't find the E
drive (drive no longer exists). I have gone into The Bat preferences,
and the System options are set as thus:
Auto Backup: Enabled
Backup every 4 days
Start at 8:00pm
Clicking on Advanced, the backup folder is The Bat folder in
Application Data on my C drive, so no problem there.

What I need to know - where is The Bat getting this old E drive path
from? It's not from the preferences, that is obvious. It can only be
from the message base that I've had throughout my Bat installations
surely? And is there a fix for my problem?

PB While you await an expert reply, I do manual backups using:

PB Tools

PB Backup

PB Browse for file etc.

PB Select all accounts

PB OK

DOH!

Thanks Paul. I have been using TB! trouble free for so many years I'd
forgotten to even look for a problem solution in the menus. I think
I'm reaching the point in life where I can hide my own Easter eggs.

The steps you suggest should of course produce a backup with a filename
created by me. However, the *default* auto-backup filename shown in:

OPTIONS
PREFERENCES
SYSTEM
AUTO BACKUP
ADVANCED

seems to contain macro commands which should produce a backup filename
containing the current date/time. As you'll see in a subsequent reply
from Roelof, he suggests manually starting the auto-backup by changing
the start time of the auto-backup to a close point in the future.
Perhaps a minute or two - something I'll try shortly.

No problem with file size or available disk space. I did a search and
found the file autobackup.tbk in the C:\Program Files\The Bat!\MAIL
folder with an OS timestamp of 5/31 @ 08:11 which is about
the time/date I remember the last autobackup occurring. Why it landed

As you can see in a previous paragraph the filename created by TB! is
simply autobackup.tbk without any embedded date/time in the filename
as it appears in OPTIONSPREFERENCESSYSTEMAUTOBACKUPADVANCED.

RO BTW2 No, it isn't possible to start TB's autobackup manually, though

without the date/time embedded in the filename.

I next tried a *manual* backup as suggested by Paul in a previous reply
using as a filename the one displayed in
  OPTIONSPREFERENCESSYSTEMAUTOBACKUPADVANCED which is
  F:\autobackup-%DATE(-mm-dd)-%TIME(hh-mm-ss).tbk. That produced a
.tbk file on the F: drive called exactly
  F:\autobackup-%DATE(-mm-dd)-%TIME(hh-mm-ss).tbk. My head is
  starting to hurt.

I think in light of all that I have learned from this thread I'll
just cancel the scheduled backup and start it manually from the TOOLS
 menu as Paul suggested.

Backup progress window

2008-05-31 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello one and all,

I currently have TB! setup to perform a backup every 4 days @ 0230hrs.
Apparently, this can happen only if TB! is running @ 0230hrs, which,
of course, it usually isn't. The consequence of this is that the
backup will start at some random time while I'm trying to take care of
fetching, reading and answering my latest emails. The backup progress
window pops up and cannot be minimized. No reading or answering email
can be done during the backup and I have no choice but to wait till
the backup is completed or cancel the backup to make the backup window
go away.

Is there a way to minimize the window during the backup so I can
continue handling my emails or do I just have to make sure TB! is
running every 4th day @ 0230hrs?

My apologies if this has been discussed before but I just don't
remember seeing this topic.

I'm having a problem with and old scheduled backup.

As soon as TheBat! was able to schedule autobackup I set up a backup
to be run at every three days for all my accounts.

The destination folder was d:\mail\ that also was the root folder
 for TheBat! mail

After I changed my pc I reinstalled TheBat! but, as I have e huge,
single disk I put as root folder C:\Mail instead of D:\Mail moving
there all my mail folders from the old pc.

Then I just recreated every account pointing it to the correct folder
 (e.g. Account 1 C:\Mail\account1, and so on).

Now I'm having this problem: every time the scheduled backup tries to
write the tbk file in D:\mail, even if I changed all the scheduled
 works.
I guess somewhere the old path is still written but I cannot find
 it.
 Can anyone help me?
 TNX

With .tbk you include preferences and registration info (stuff that's
stored in the registry, not on disk) Also restoring the address book
compresses it (deleting entries from the AB means that they're marked
as deleted, they'll stay in the file, but when you backup they won't
be included.)
Disadvantage is that you can only restore to the same path and that
.tbk currently doesn't copy the upload manager and address history
yet. Nor will it backup any files that aren't regular TB files (my
cookies are stored in a text file in my mail directory, but it won't
be included in my backup)

Right now my TB installation is the default one with the mail
directory under application data on the default drive. So assuming I
had to do a reinstall and chose the default set up, TBK import should
work fine. On the other hand, you say that if i were to put my mail
directory on a separate drive when doing a new installation, an import
via tbk would fail?

thanks for that - in that case I better write down the exact path to
have the option to match it in future. I notice that each time when I
do a new installation there may be slight variations as to which

Backup Query

2008-02-07 Thread Tom

Hello Everyone,

I am using the scheduler to back up my email with the output file
being xxx.tbk.
I also regularly backup my whole folder set under application data. In
the past when I had to reinstall my OS (XP) I got everything up and
running quickly by copying the full folder set. I also experimented
with having the mail directory moved from one drive to another one
under preferences and that worked fine too.

I never used the ..tbk file to restore and I am just curious what the
difference is between backing up via ...tbk file or via saving the
mail directory? Any advantages or disadvantage of one over the other?

Backup Query

2007-11-03 Thread Tom

Hello Everyone,

just wondering about backups?

I have scheduled a weekly backup and include Acc. Properties, Folders,
Address Books, Global Options and Attachments.
This appears to work fine (fortunately never had to use them) and the
output is a .tbk file.

Two question:

a) do I need to backup quick templates separately or are they included
in one of the above headings? Where would I find my current QT?

b) as mentioned I never had to use a backup but my harddrive now
contains 2 dozen tbk files of increasing size. Assuming I don't notice
a sudden unexplained drop in file size, is there any reason not to
delete older backups? My assumption is that if my most recent backup
does not work, it's likely that the older ones might also have
problems but more to the point, the value of a backup taken a year ago
with respect emails is not very high or am I missing something?

 Try:
 PCName%Date(-mm-dd)-%Time(HH-mm-ss).tbk

Because of the limited space in the file name 'window' you may have to
enter small blocks of the text starting from the right. For example first
enter%Time(HH-mm-ss).tbk and then enter the next block at the left of

If the backup is *weekly* do you really require time as well as
date stamping?

You could use a short path/filename automatically rename/move it
using a batch file (others here can help more than I can with
this).

hi roelof,

message from roelof otten created on 2/10/2007 follows ...

First thing you do is create a new folder and copy all messages for

Check whether all messages have really been copied, if so delete all
messages in the faulty folder and compress it. That ought to to take
care of things. (You could delete the messages.tbb and .tbi from the

In case not all messages are copied, close TB and move the
messages.tbb from that folder to a safe place, you can delete the

i tried the above steps multiple times but TB backup pops up the same error
message as it processes that inbox each and every time. lacking any ideas of
my own, my next step is to let the backup continue and do a test restore to
determine what, if anything, is wrong with the restored messages.

apart from keeping a safe copy of the messages.tbb file to import from if
necessary, i don't know what else to try.

Re[2]: Backup and Address Books

2007-01-26 Thread Mike Greenbaum
I regularly use the backup utility of The Bat! to backup my mail files.
What's annoying is that every time I must re-select which address books I
 want to back up.

LVK I *think* the last selection is automatically remembered if you
LVK back-up using the scheduler,

I think the same, but then I deleted all those extra address books in
 my setup.

I had deleted the Intermediate and Trusted Root Folders from my Address Book,
but they still showed up in the backup utility list. So I went to C:\Program
Files\TheBat!|Mail and found they were still there. So I deleted them from that
folder.

I closed TB, reopened it, and checked the backup utility. The Intermediate and
Trusted Root items were still there. I went back to Program Files\TheBat!\Mail
only to find the folders I'd deleted had been apparently recreated when I
reopened TB.

Wonder why this is. Seems unfriendly of TB to continue to force me to deal with
something I don't want.

I don't understand why I can't set a default for which address books I want
backed up--with the option to change them if I want.

Instead, I'm given some option by TheBat! which I must uncheck (Intermediate
CA--I have no idea what that is and don't use it) and then re-check the ones I
want.

Why does the utility not give me the option of setting the address book backup

Simply copying back will not work if we do not understand entire
mechanism (or the parts involved), of how the both (various) backup
programs and TBat work.

For instance, in the file Account.flx (dwelling in an account folder)
are names and the order of all the folders of the given account. So, if
we simply copy (just) some folder back, with related message database
(the file Messages.tbb), and this folder is not (for any reasons) listed
in the Account.flx, then TBat will not be able to recognize it.

And so on.

Also, I use the backup/restore function as a crude means of
synchronizing with my laptop as the synchronization feature does not
 work in Abascusbat.

Well, might be that sometimes is better to stick to TBat's internal
backup/restore machine, than to get into something new/else, even if
this is more effective and safer. It's quite okay and it mostly works
quite fine, and stresslessly.

backup cannot write

2006-09-24 Thread Mary Jensen
I'm using the 1.63 version of bat! in Abacus law program. About a week ago, I
suddenly cannot backup. Every time it hangs partway through saying cannot
write [backupfilename].

I suspect a corrupted folder but can't find it. Ran maintenance and it says
nothing to do. I checked each of my 700+ folders and eliminated all the ones
that show zero messages. Still won't write.

I've defragged my drive, tried saving to different directories and different
file names, tried saving to different drives and still it doesn't work. I'm not
trying to save over a network. It is all in the same
machine.

I tried saving just the main accounts without the common folders and that seems
to work. But when I try to backup just the common
folders, it gives the can't write error.

Any idea other than checking the maintenance log (I already did that) on how to
figure
out which of my 700+ folders is the problem or how to fix the problem?

BTW, I tried unstalling and reinstalling Abacusbat and even redownloading and
reinstalling the latest Abacusbat from the Abacus web site (stil 1.63). That
didn't fix it either.

How to fix the problem is what I choose, this time.

Do it (the backup) using some other, separate, program. It is simplest,
fastest and safest way (particularly if we deal with lots of folders; I
have near to 400 of them).

You can simply compress/archive the whole your \Mail folder (using
WinZip or any other archiving program - PowerArchiver 2001 is free for
instance and very good, writing and reading numerous archive formats),
or you can use a standalone backup program as My Own Backup v2.1 is,
also freeware.

They all will write always, no matter what happens with TBat,
internally, and will always be able to expand back the backup they make.

Besides, there are even more good reasons why to do that this way, but
basically they all could be reduced to the one: TB is a mailer, but is
not a backup machine, or encrypting software and so on.

The more side functions is built-in in a software with the basic
designated function, the more chances are that they will get in
collision, or confused one by another.

This way of backing up using standalone backup programs is even more
significant if we deal with lots of mail and besides a such one we
consider as valuable (be that some work and some official
documentation, or something else).

   *

And, for the end, let me quote the famous and unfathomable Hammer Von
Troll: It's not that sad when backup cannot write as it is when backup
cannot read.

Actually, I tried to cleanup a bit my accounts, by moving old messages
into special (Common) folders. Then I made a full maintenance
operation (compression, integrity check, ecc.). Unfortunately I don't
know which of the two operations made things work, but now my
incremental backup (excluding the huge common folders) works like a

Next time I will try to separate these two operations in order to
check which one may have been the actual solution.

Problems with backup

2006-08-30 Thread Philippe Macaire
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to use the incremental backup feature of The Bat! but I'm
having a bit of trouble.

I have several accounts, one of them much bigger than the others (for
work), with something like 70.000 mails, and a lot of quite big
attachments. The resulting backup file is something like 2.4 GB. I
don't seem to have problems in backing up all my accounts at once. The
problem arises when I try to do an incremental backup (which I would
like to do once a day), because the resulting file is almost as big as
the full backup one, and it takes way too long (it works as if it
weren't incremental at all).

What's strange is that when I exclude from my backup my big account,
everything works fine, and the backup file is reasonably small.

I was wondering if the account dimension, or that of one of its
subfolders, could be a problem. Note that the account is configured to
store attachments in message bodies.

Any experience, someone?

Thanks for your help.

ASK I just thought its a rather complicated way to make a backup and
ASK felt the urge to add a comment to this rather important issue.

I'm glad you did. I always find your comments insightful and helpful,
and in this case, they led me to rethink how to achieve my objective.

And now, are you ready for this?

This morning out of the blue the email was generated, signifying the
completion of the backup! Granted it was generated an hour late, at
02:45 a.m. rather than 01:45 a.m., but it was created and sent. That
was the first time that the email was auto-generated without my
running the task manually. Also the incremental backup was done.

I have no explanation for why it suddenly works. I plan to leave the
task in place for a couple of more nights just to see if it continues
to work. However, I'm not going to rely on that backup as my way to
restore TB! if necessary but on my regular backup procedure instead.

  Update on 8/17/06:

The scheduled action has now worked for three days in a row, still an
hour late, but that is of no consequence to me. Here is the content of
  the three messages I've received.

Backup successful at 2:45:00 AM on Tuesday, August 15, 2006.
Backup successful at 2:45:00 AM on Wednesday, August 16, 2006.
Backup successful at 2:45:00 AM on Thursday, August 17, 2006.

In the interim, I've setup my usual backup routine to backup both the
home folder and the mail folder, so I am covered. I'll do a periodic
backup of the whole installation using TB!'s internal backup tool,
just so I have that in case I need it.

Sorry to have caused undue alarm over the fact that it didn't work
immediately, but I appreciate everyone's attempt to help. I don't know
why it needed a three day running start to work, but work it now does.

And now that it works, I'll probably delete that task in favor of the
  alternate backup strategy mentioned above.

Try some very simple, partial tasks of what you planned originally.

I set up a simple test event and set it to notify me. It did NOT occur

Now the chore is to figure out why.

I periodically have a problem with scheduler. My backup settings are

I don't know if it'll help, but try deleting the task and creating a

Scheduling Backup of TB!

2006-08-13 Thread Perry Nelson
Hi TBUDL,

Because I recently had to restore TB! from a 2 month old backup, I
decided to use the Scheduler to have TB! do a nightly incremental
backup. I set it up to run at 01:45 a.m. each night and to send an
email immediately upon completion from one account to another using a
template that reports the time and date of the successful backup.

When I execute this recurring event from the Scheduler, it performs
exactly as I designed it. It does the backup, creates and sends the
email, and the email reports exactly what it should. Therefore, I
conclude from this that the event is set up properly.

However, my problem is that the event isn't triggered automatically.

When I examine the properties of the event, everything looks like it
is set up properly, so I must be overlooking something. Here's what is
on each tab of the properties of the event:

General tab: Description: Backup TB! each night. Start Friday,
August 11, 2006 at 01:45 a.m. Duration is 1 hour. Nothing else is
  checked.

Actions tab: Execute these actions when event starts = Backup, and
Execute these actions when event finishes = Create/Send message.

Recurrence tab: Repeat this event every 1 Day. Stop repeating this
  event = Never.

Advanced tab: Event occurs according to these rules: Time = 01:45 a.m.
Days = Every day, Week = Every week, and Months = Every month.

  Links tab: Has nothing set.

  Categories tab: Has nothing set.

Can you tell me what to change to cause this event to trigger
automatically every night as it should? I'll reiterate that if I
manually cause this scheduled event to execute immediately, it does
everything just exactly as it should.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

to be working perfectly. I do a full system backup at 4 a.m., which

Did you create a full backup using the specified path? So far as I can
tell, a full backup is necessary for the add timestamp feature to
work. For example, my full backup is today.tbk and the incrementals
become today1.tbk through today7.tbk as the scheduler creates
them.

You're using Windows XP. Your computer is running overnight to run the
backup event you created within TB. I wonder, why don't you use
NTbackup?!? You can schedule an NTbackup task just as well (not with TBs
scheduler, I mean the Windows scheduler) if your machine is running
anyway.

NTbackup is basically the same as a standalone version of Veritas (now
Symantec) Backup Exec, one of the most widely used backup programs in
the professional IT world.

NTbackup is shipped with *every* Windows (at least the NT series) - if
you're using XP Home you have to install it from the CD (which is
described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302894/) while on
Windows2000 and XP Pro its already part of the default installation.

And since Windows XP has a function called shadowcopies you can even
back up the live registry and other vital system data (all together MS
calls it systemstate) to have a backup thats worth the name.

NTbackup is a nice and easy to use backup program. Creating and
scheduling a backup event is a piece of cake! Using the wizard mode,
even a novice can create a scheduled backup with it.

The only important thing is that you should have a password set for your
Windows user account because the Windows scheduler wants that in order
to run the scheduled event with the correct user credentials.

Msgbases grows and if has user thousands of messages in hundreds folders,
TB becomes slow and eats much memory when loading msgbases. These messages
are mainly archives of mailinglists and are used for searching only, so it
is not needed to have them accessible via TB's interface, they can be
stored on HDD or CD and TB will search them without loading them on start.
BTW if they are stored on CD, user must create folders in TB and assign
them to folders on CD to using them for searching.

And of course, it will be great to allow searching messages in TBK files
created by The Bat!.

2006-01-24 Thread Thomas Martin
Hello Roelof,

on Tuesday, 24. January 2006, at 10:14:37 [GMT +0100] you wrote
regarding Weekly backup:

TM
C:\yourpath\%SETPATTREGEXP=(\d+).(\d+)\.(\d{4})%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=%DATESHORT%Subpatt=3%Subpatt=2%Subpatt=1%SETPATTREGEXP=(\d+)\:(\d+)%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=%TIME%Subpatt=1%Subpatt=2.TBK

Unfortunately this regexp gives me the creation time as filename
instead of the creation date and as the nature of a schedule is that
it's executed at the same time.

Strange it shoud give you a filename which tells you Date and Time.
Like '200512261914.tbk'

Anyway, you way is working. You had a look at the batch File?

Yes, but I don't use plug-ins, so backing them up wasn't a real issue
for me. And the reason I started this thread was that I wanted to take
care of this issue without any third party applications.

HDB Where do I have to put that?

 It's for my weekly backup.

Create a new schedule in the scheduler
 Add 'backup' as action.
And give the string above as location for the backup

Hoi Roelof,

I did a daily automatic backup in the past (scheduler) but at that time
the name of the file caused problems, maybe this date name will solve
this.

Thanks!

Weekly backup

2006-01-23 Thread Roelof Otten
Hallo TBUDL,

Via TB's scheduler I'm creating a new backup every week.
However, this backup overwrites the old backup as it has the same
  name.
Does anybody know how to give them proper alternating names?
Something like the date as in MMDD.

Sure. Fire off an action as the next task within the same schedule to
launch a batch file to rename the file. Ah, yes. Dates. I have a
utility that will let you pipe the current date in any format you like
to a text file. A bit of skillful use and you can write a batch file
to set and environment variable with the date and append it to a
filename for a rename operation.

it could be made publicly available or at least let me have a copy?

And can someone tell me how to remove 'Christmas Edition' from the version
name? Please!!
