So, my question is which of the database formats would be best

 better suited for the queries.

 Any ideas anyone?

 .3 first?

You have to reinstall. But that isn't a big problem - after new installation
copy the data and configuration files into the new server and get going. You
don't have to uninstall .3 (hmm.. what major version you might mean?) before
installing .4. Don't reinstall into the same directory. If something goes
wrong, you can always revert to the previous, working installation.

Yes, it's possible. Export your Access data to standard csv files, and then
use mysqlimport with appropriate parameters to import the csvs into MySQL.
The MySQL manual has excellent guidance on using mysqlimport or LOAD DATA
INFILE statements (which can do the same as mysqlimport).

IMHO, usually no. But if you have several differently configured server

Error log (which is automatically on) and I also use slow query logging. For
replication you need binary logging. Query logging is hardly needed on
production machines (it slows things down, use it on your development box).

Typically what things do you set on in the config file on a production server?

separate servers on the same box? My thoughts, if have one MySQL server
running on one box with 10 databases, and 1 or 2 of those databases are
getting the majority of the requests and tying up the processes, seems like
 the other 8 would suffer.

Hi!

You can think of server instances as you'd think of databases. If one server
instance (say, that with one or two heavily-loaded databases) gets a lot of
requests, the other server instances suffer.

With separate server instances you'll suffer from additional overhead.

If you require different server configuration for different databases, then
you'll have to install two or more separate server instances.

Hope this clears it. :-)

Maybe Mr. Raymer means that he would get more performance when running

Getting more performance this way is unfortunately a false assumption,

Re: Multiple MySQL running

2002-10-29 Thread Iikka Meriläinen
Hi!

Just specify different ports, data and base directories for those instances
(using command-line parameters -P, --basedir and --datadir respectively, for
example).

Instance 1 startup:
mysqld-nt -P=3306 --basedir=e:/mysql1 --datadir=e:/mysql1/data --console
--standalone

Instance 2 startup:
mysqld-nt -P=3307 --basedir=e:/mysql2 --datadir=e:/mysql2/data --console
--standalone

If I remember this right, you can do this with services on Windows, too, but
it will get trickier then.

On *nix change the paths, but it should work the same way otherwise.
mysqld-nt changes to mysqld.

realised its limitations, where is the best place to start learning and reading up on
MYSQL, I am not really a book reader as I prefer to do things by trial and error but
have not got a clue as to how mysql works

Hi!

See www.mysql.com/doc

There is a tutorial section in the manual, it's not a big one, but you
should be able to get started with it. The reference manual is excellent for
further learning, too.

Paul DuBois's book 'MySQL' is also very good.

Also, searching Google with these 'mysql tutorial' will help... :-)

Iikka

 Hi, all!

I would like to dump my mysql databases to cold files for separate
backups; we're too cheap to buy the database agent that will do it live.

 I started with

   mysqldump --user=root --password=showtheworld --all-databases ...

as I've seen in numerous scripts posted to this list, but of course that
shows the world my DB root password if you happen to run top at the right
time (or are the adventurous type who might run a script to, say, look
for and log any mysql commands). My next step was to

create dumpster user with no password
grant select on *.* to dumpster@localhost

 so that I can run

   mysqldump --user=dumpster --all-databases ...

and at least protect all of my writing privs -- but now the DB id of a
user that can obviously read every bit of data in there is also exposed.

What I need is a way to connect to the database from a cron job without
exposing the password in the environment. What amazes me is that even
confidential databases at large companies are accessed through scripts
with the passwords embedded -- and the scripts are often world-readable!

Is there anything analagous to an ssh key pair so that only an OS user
connecting with the DB id private key can get in to do the select and run
the mysqldump? Or am I barking up the wrong tree and should I instead do
something else to cleanly and securely back up the databases?

Hi!

See http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Secure_connections.html
and its subsections. I think GRANT ... REQUIRE X509 and x509 certificates
could help you.

Even then you have expose your password but it won't help a cracker as he
doesn't have your certificate.

I haven't used this personally, and the documentation is pretty thin on this
subject, unfortunately.

Iikka

Hi!

You don't need any special drivers. Just the MySQL command-line client will
do the job. It can be downloaded from www.mysql.com along with the server
package.

How do I set permissions on the mysql server to let be accessed by the
 remote windows machine.

See http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/GRANT.html for details on how to set up new
users and permissions.

You'll need something like
GRANT all ON *.* TO yourusername IDENTIFIED BY 'yourpassword';

This will give your users a broad set of permissions, please have a look at
the docs if you want to restrict those.

Correct.

Without all this, the TCP/IP communication CAN NOT EXIST.
MySQL have the own way/functions for resolving hostnames but which is based
 on the glibc functions.
The glibc defines the SYSTEM CALLS and others functions and it used by the

In fact by adding IP address in /etc/hosts, the glibc function
gethostbyaddr() reserve the RIGHT MEMORY SIZE FOR IT(seems to be a recast to

If the IP address/Alias is not present in hosts, this function make an

 That's it.

Seems to be. Got it. :-)

In my previous e-mail i don't say nothing about Domain Class(A,B,C) or

Not in those words, but you talked about host resolving. That is certainly
DNS functionality.

You talked about SERVER... it can be understood in many different ways.

But it seems to me that this issue is resolved and over.

IP-hostname mapping/resolving is usually done by DNS servers, not the MySQL

AFAIK, IP-to-hostname mapping isn't done by _kernel_ functions. At least
the Linux kernel knows very little about hostnames. Some exotic Unixes may
implement this differently, but no operating system I'm aware of has kernel
 interfaces for name resolution.

Making the server recognize the client correctly with an updated /etc/hosts
seems logical enough. It's strange, though, to have to make changes on the
server for clients to be able to connect.

For using this functions IS NEED TO HAVE the properly system call

Here you get it right. glibc is much more responsible for
ip-hostname-mapping than the operating system kernel itself. Kernel
implements the IP protocol with dotted-format addresses, and it expects
user-mode libraries to do any necessary conversions. That is, when you do
this: ping www.google.com the ping binary calls a couple of conversion
functions in user-mode libraries so that it can pass a real IP address to
 the kernel/protocol interface.

Hi,

Honestly speaking, 500 mb of almost _any_ data is nothing for MySQL. It can
handle even several hundreds of gigabytes of data, assuming it is well
organized and the queries are optimized.

Do you know about any article or study about MySql efficiency? If not,
maybe you can just tell me your own experience.

My own experience is limited to fairly small systems, but I guess that for

more about using MySQL in _really_ high-loaded systems. See any of his
signatures for examples.. ;-) Quite impressive numbers, there.

Anyway, MySQL efficiency is awesome. If you don't really require transaction
support in your application, consider using MyISAM as your table handler.

Hi,

You can reposition your entire data directory by using the
--datadir=/path/to/new/data/dir command line parameter to mysqld. This
repositions all databases, and you have to copy the directory structure
under the current data directory into the new directory (permission tables,
for example).

The file copying across the network could be done via FTP, SMB or anything
that is good for your platform.

Not sure on this either, but do platforms/OSes with 32/64-bit stuff cause
problems? How about the byte order? Anyone wiser than me, please comment on

Have you tried building a script that automates the mysqldump process?

Hi,

I guess that's not possible.

SHOW TABLES shows your tables in the database, but unfortunately you can't
do something like SELECT * FROM (SHOW TABLES) WHERE Tables_in_xx =
'blahblah'

Of course you can create a table that contains metadata for your tables, but
you would have to update it manually. Or you could have an external program
scanning your data directories for added/removed table files.

Hi,

Run mysqld-max-nt --install

at least you should be able to start the service by entering 'net start

What's the best way of getting this done? The server is running

 through MySQL.

Hi,

Unfortunately you'll have to use Solaris disk quotas for that. Make sure
that the table files of each restricted-space user count towards their
personal quotas. This means that you have to create a separate OS account
for each user you want to restrict with the quota. This also means that the
table files must be owned by those restricted users.

I hope this quota feature will be added into MySQL in the future.

What is the simple way to do that ( MacOS X ).

Hi,

Consider using --port=1234 parameter to mysqld.

Also, if Mac OS supports it, you can specify those parameters along with

Subject: automating import process

Hi,

I want to try to automate a phonebook list import process into MySQL
database. The phonebook was originally created with MS Access and
exported into a text file. I upload that text file onto my server and I
proceed with the following import process.

Using Telnet I type:
# ./mysql -u 'root' -p

It then asks
Enter password:

I then select the database to use
mysql use import_test1;

I delete the previous phonebook list table because the import process does
not know that it should replace the previous records even though there
have been changes
mysql use import_test1;

mysql exit
Bye

I then import by doing the following:
[root@ns2 bin]# ./mysqlimport --local -u root -p
--fields-terminated-by=, import_test1 phone2.txt
Enter password:
import_test1.phone2: Records: 53 Deleted: 0 Skipped: 0 Warnings: 1

I was wondering is there anyway to automate this process in a script?

I have never written a script in Linux before. If I can automate this

Re: Basic RPM installation?

2002-09-28 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hi,

You indeed have to su to root to get things working.

safe_mysqld as root didn't work because your PATH environment wasn't
correctly set because you didn't use this: su -
su - makes the new shell the user's login shell, resetting environment
variables and reading configuration files to re-set them correctly.
With su - it will work as expected.

You would have got it working with this, though: /usr/bin/safe_mysqld
or ./safe_mysqld when you were in /usr/bin.

Iikka

RE: automating import process

2002-09-27 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hi,

use this: mysql -u root -ppassword

It's important NOT to put a space between -p and the real password. Having a
password in a script is unsafe at its best, though. I'm not sure if you have
any other options than to put it that way or enter it manually each time you
run the script.

Iikka

 Hi Carl,

 Thanks for your reply.

I have created a shell script but I get stuck on the part where it asks to

How do I get the script to input the password that I put in?

So far my script looks like this:

 ./mysql -u 'root' -p
 echo abc

The script executes, but it just waits for the password after it executes
 the line:
 ./mysql -u 'root' -p

 Can anyone help with this?

 Thanks.

  Subject: automating import process

  Hi,

I want to try to automate a phonebook list import process into MySQL
database. The phonebook was originally created with MS Access and
exported into a text file. I upload that text file onto my server and I
proceed with the following import process.

  Using Telnet I type:
  # ./mysql -u 'root' -p

  It then asks
  Enter password:

I then select the database to use
  mysql use import_test1;

I delete the previous phonebook list table because the import process does
not know that it should replace the previous records even though there
  have been changes
  mysql use import_test1;

  mysql exit
  Bye

I then import by doing the following:
  [root@ns2 bin]# ./mysqlimport --local -u root -p
  --fields-terminated-by=, import_test1 phone2.txt
  Enter password:
  import_test1.phone2: Records: 53 Deleted: 0 Skipped: 0 Warnings: 1

I was wondering is there anyway to automate this process in a script?

I have never written a script in Linux before. If I can automate this
process, what kind of script should I use?

  Thanks.

Re: mysql all messedup ... :'( .....

2002-09-26 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hi,

Er, I don't want to be rude, but those dots drive me crazy.

Could you include more details? What version of MySQL running now? Running as
a service r from the command line? You can't even log in? What does MySQL
client say? I suggest using the command line client for early troubleshooting,
just to make sure the problem isn't elsewhere.

Did you do a proper uninstall? I mean, if you had your previous mysqld
installed as a service, did you uninstall that service first? Are you using
your old grant tables or the clean, new ones that ship with the setup package?

Or are you logging in as 'root'? Or as a different user? Double check your
passwords and try an empty password for 'root', too.

Also, please see http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Access_denied.html for some
common causes of Access Denied errors.

Iikka

Did you check Egor's last message to you on the list? After starting mysqld
with --skip-grant-tables you should be able to connect with this:
mysql -u root
on the server, otherwise use mysql -u root -h your.server.ip.address

It won't be of much help if you can't get 'root' working. Please try to get
that right first and then check your own account.

Re: Set Path Environment

2002-09-25 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hi,

Just to clarify a bit, the file in \windows is called winstart.bat, but it
seems to be discontinued in Windows XP (may not be available in W2K either).
In Windows NT it works, though.

In NT/W2K/XP the most efficient way to modify these variables _and_ persist
them is through My Computer-Properties... as I noted in an earlier message.

After thinking this a bit, it'd be very nice if the MySQL setup program
offered an option to automatically add mysql\bin to the PATH environment
variable (whoever is responsible of the setup, please consider this!) on
Windows.

Best regards,

So it's probably due to your NTFS file/directory permission on Windows. Please
try this if _nothing_ else seems to help: grant Everyone RWXD (full) rights to
the whole data directory. This has, of course, a major problem with security
but that way you could check if it's really a permissions problem. Also, a
more secure way to accomplish this is to run the MySQL service as a ordinary
user (rather than the SYSTEM account) and grant that user full rights to the
whole data directory structure (make sure the subdirectories and files get
their correct permissions, too).

Re: access denied ????

2002-09-25 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

No. Not in MySQL or phpMyAdmin but on the operating system / file system level
instead. Open up the data directory in My Computer on your server, then
right-click that directory, select Security tab, there add Everyone or the
use that MySQL service runs as to the list and select Full Access. Then
click Advanced permissions or something like that below the permissions list
(I'm not sure, running Finnish Windows 2000 right now). However, check the
lower checkbox on the Permissions tab in order to enable permissions
inheritance from a upper level to a lower one.

You might have to shut down MySQL during the permissions change.

So it's probably due to your NTFS file/directory permission on Windows.
 Please
try this if _nothing_ else seems to help: grant Everyone RWXD (full) rights
 to
the whole data directory. This has, of course, a major problem with
 security
but that way you could check if it's really a permissions problem. Also, a
more secure way to accomplish this is to run the MySQL service as a
 ordinary
user (rather than the SYSTEM account) and grant that user full rights to
 the
whole data directory structure (make sure the subdirectories and files get
 their correct permissions, too).

Re: Mysql Error

Hi,

Getting a bit off-topic...
I'm not sure whether you can add functionality to an already compiled PHP
installation. Maybe your best bet is to recompile your PHP, that way you can
get the latest version, and with only the functionality you want. Just
remember to enable --with-mysql during the configuration. The source package
at www.php.net has a good installation guide.

Re: Set Path Environment

Hello,

On Windows 9x edit your c:\autoexec.bat

On Windows NT/2000/XP/.NET, right-click My Computer, then Properties, then on
XP click Advanced tab and then Environment Variables. On NT/2000 this
procedure is about the same, only the Environment stuff is on a different tab.

Then re-run autoexec.bat or reload your command prompt, respectively.

Hello,

If you're on *NIX platform, use this:
chown mysql *
in your data directory. To make things sure, chown every data file to
mysql user (I assume you've created it during install).

On Windows, check the permissions. I apologize for being inaccurate, but
you didn't specify what operating system you're using and whether you have
installed MySQL from source or from a binary package.

The reason for prefering InnoDB over MyISAM? Performance. Most benchmarks
show InnoDB is slightly faster than MyISAM, and not to mention its some
other benefits.

But the performance could be a reason on its own to use InnoDB. I don't
mean that MyISAM is bad, not at all. It's simpler to use, after all. But
what I mean is that InnoDB can be used in all tasks MyISAM is suitable
for, and some tasks will be done faster using InnoDB.

Re: installin mysql on win 2000

2002-09-18 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello Ryan,

No real problems with Windows 2000 Server and Adv. Server. Install SP3
before MySQL as the SP installation might remove the MySQL service
registration in some cases. The setup process itself is an extremely
straightforward one, taking just two or three minutes. The manual has good
information on how to install MySQL as a service and whether to choose MAX
or normal version for regular use etc. etc. You might want to use
phpMyAdmin to administer your MySQL server (if you have a PHP/Apache box
available). Another good (although discontinued) frontend is MySQLFront.
phpMyAdmin has the advantage that you don't need a Windows box to work
with it, any computer with a browser is sufficient.

Iikka

Re: Regarding Mysql4.0

2002-09-17 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello,

The normal binary packages don't include source code. You have to download
the source code package (also available from those download pages). For
most users this will suffice, but the source is also available on
BitKeeper server (see the Technical Reference for installing from the
source tree). There is no specific source download for -max versions as
the code is the same as in normal versions.

Re: Stopping Running Queries...

2002-09-05 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello,

Use mysqladmin processlist command to see the thread that's eating up
resources, then use mysqladmin kill to kill that thread.

mysqladmin documentation offers much more information on this topic.

You can also use SHOW PROCESSLIST and KILL SQL commands to achieve that.

something stupid, and sparks off a query that is hogging resources, I'd like
to be able to kill that query so everyone else can get on with life. How is
this, if it can be done, accomplished?

RE: performance tunning 4.x

2002-08-29 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello,

A MySQL developer would be able to answer to these questions more
accurately, but I'll try to answer _logically_. So don't bet a million
dollars on the correctness of my answer.

NOTE: The query cache does not return stale data. When data is modified,
any relevant entries in the query cache are flushed.

If I have a select statement like:

 select col1, col2 from table1 where col1='A'

 1) will the cache be flushed if someone changes a non-referenced column for
 one of the retrieved rows:

 Update table1 set col3 = 'x' where col1='A'

this update changes col3 that falls within the Where of the query but it
affects a column that is not returned by the query.

I think this flushes the cache. Think about a situation where col1 is a
computed column that derives its values from the data in col3. When col3
is updated, the value of col1 in the query cache would become invalid.

 2) or will the cache be flushed if someone changes a row that falls outside
 of the query's Where clause:

This shouldn't explicitly flush the cache, but I don't know the details of
the implementation. This insert shouldn't have any effect on the
aforementioned SELECT query, because col1 here is 'D'.

 insert into table1 (col1, col2, col3) values('D', 'x', 'y');

This last query updates the same table as the select query, but the row
that is added is outside the range of the query's where clause.

So how smart is the cache?
 a) Is it smart enough to allow table updates and if the update doesn't
affect the query, will it continue to use the cache? (This requires a lot
 of intelligence.)
 b) Or will any update to the rows that fall within the range of the query
(regardless of whether the column is in the query) will flush the cache?
 c) Or will any update to the table automatically flush the cache?

 MONTY:
I would like to see the Explain command to say if it is using the cache or
not (CACHE:Yes/No). This would help developers make better use of the cache
if they know how what affects it.

 Mike

Hi,

Start by looking at the MySQL documentation:

Read the entire 6.9 section.

It offers quite a bit of information on how the cache operates, how
you should configure it and so on.

Re: mysql newbie

2002-08-27 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello,

sorry for a late answer, but here it comes.

On Tue, 27 Aug 2002, Mylin Campos wrote:

I'm a newbie with mysql. I have a few question and would really appreciate
it if you can help me. I'm creating a database for a payroll system. I
actually finish with my entity relationship diagram. What should be the
next step? I know I should create the database already but while reading the
mysql documentation I've been encountering so many questions that I'm
getting all confused on where to start.

Right, if you have the root account or any other account that has enough
privileges, the right way to start is to create your own database. For now
stick with the default settings for that, they are OK.

First, where does the priviledges come in? Specifically the alter, drop,
select, insert (etc) priviledges come in? Or does this concern the database
administrator which is not my concern since I'm only the software developer.

Every time you run a query on MySQL it checks whether you have enough
permissions to do so or not. If not, it returns an error. If you are the
owner of your database (I suppose you are), you have all rights to that
database, including ALTER, DROP, CREATE and so on. As the owner you also
have SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE at your disposal, along with others.

If you read the manual beginner's section very carefully, I think you will
grasp the permissions topic fairly well. It's important to remember that
users are defined using username/hostname pairs. That is, for example, you
can have different privileges, depending on whether you login from your
work computer or your home computer, as they have different IP addresses
and host names.

Should I create the tables and then what next?

Yep, create tables. Then insert/dump your data into them. Or do anything
that suits your needs. :-)

Mysql does not a have a feature like access where you link one key to
another by dragging one field to another. does this mean that linking the
tables in mysql is done manually via the sql statements?

That's because MySQL is just a database backend, Access has the Jet engine
that it uses as a separate DLL, MySQL clients are available but their
current functionality is a bit limited in some cases. MySQLFront is a good
one to start with. You can use Access, too, to use MySQL but all its
graphical features won't work, though. phpMyAdmin is fairly efficient, but
it requires you to have a web server running PHP.

For most of your daily work you can use any graphical frontend you want
to, but for the more advanced (mostly administrative) tasks you will want
to learn enough pure SQL to accomplish those tasks more effectively.

A URL for graphical MySQL frontends:
http://www.mysql.com/downloads/gui-clients.html
MyCC is pretty OK, but its development is still underway.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask further questions as needed.

Best regards,
Iikka

Hello,

There are basically two things you should consider:
1) Switch to InnoDB tables and create several data files just under 2GB
each

2) Use MyISAM RAID option
This requires you to compile your MySQL with --with-raid configuration
parameter. Then MySQL will create separate 00, 01, 02, 03 and so on
directories with a piece of your table in each of them.
See Manual section 6.5.3 (CREATE TABLE syntax) for detailed coverage. You
will want RAID_TYPE=STRIPED configuration since that facilitates for the
spreading of the .MYD files.

Then, if there's something wrong in the error log, you can copy/paste the

Re: Lost connections on Freebsd

2002-08-18 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello,

Some basic points about these problems:
1) have you another application/mysqld listening on the same tcp port?
2) have you tried different versions (switching between 3.23 and 4.x
series, for example)
3) try compiling from the source with a bit different configuration
parameters
4) do your connections drop if you're connecting from the localhost? How
about from other hosts? How about connecting with other clients?

Just don't give up. I've never seen a MySQL-related problem that nobody
has been able to solve. I don't believe this isn't about anything big. And
probably there are lots of more people active on this list next week,
somebody of them might be able to solve your problem. :-)

Iikka

  Fair enough,

But then why is MySQL the *only* thing I am having problems with? MySQL's
not the only application running on the box, it's not the only application

*shrugs*... Maybe I should just rm -rf / and reinstall.

Re: mysql password file

2002-08-12 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hi,

If I understood your message right, the answer is no. The only place
passwords are stored is the mysql database, so they're physically located
in the mysql.MYD file. They're encrypted there, too.

Re: lost mysql database tables

2002-08-11 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello Dave,

Phew... what a situation! ;-)

You can always run mysql_install_db script on *NIX, but it clears your
existing permissions. On Windows you can do an xcopy for your mysql
database from the distribution package, but that doesn't save your
permissions, either.

First, though, make sure that you really don't have any disk files in the
data\mysql directory. If there are any .MYD and .MYI files, they can
contain your permissions. The .frm files can then be copied from another
similar server (they only contain the table definitions, not the actual
data).

What about backups? ;-)

Iikka

Re: instance

2002-07-17 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hello Alexander,

You can easily have two or more instances (mysqld processes) of
MySQL running on the physically same server as long as they have different
data directories. You possibly could, in theory, have a system where
several mysqld processess share the same data directory (still having
different databases) but this approach is _extremely_ tricky to get working
reliably.

About the need of several server instances, you could use another MySQL
for production use (possibly with the normal port, stable table handlers
etc.), meanwhile having another instance for development use, running on a
different port. The good point of this approach is that if the
development instance crashes due to some strange experiment (as mine
sometimes does :-), it won't affect the production instance in any way. Of
course, you should try to separate your production and development
environments, but it's not always affordable.

Iikka

Re: Concept

2002-07-16 Thread Iikka Meriläinen

Hi,

If you mean the concept (in Oracle) where an instance is effectively one
database, the architectures differ a whole lot. Whereas Oracle, as I said,
creates an instance for each database it's running, MySQL can handle
several databases within one server process instance.

The concept of data files is different, too. In Oracle you can define
tablespaces that can span one or more datafiles. Then you create your
tables into those tablespaces (--data files). MySQL, by default, creates
three files per table: [tblname].MYI (indices built on the table),
[tblname].MYD (the actual data - this is often the biggest file in a
physical table representation), and [tblname].frm within which lies the
definition (column names, data types etc.) of the table.

MySQL doesn't have real control files like Oracle, it uses my.cnf instead
to supply some values to the server that can't be specified runtime. You
can, however, control the behaviour of the mysqld(-nt).exe by using some
of the command-line startup parameters, if you like.

Hope this helps! :-)

Iikka
