I wouldn't upgrade the IOS. We had a 3550 that was doing the same thing (GBIC not blinking at all). We called into TAC and got a replacement. We did the upgrade first and when the switch would boot it would no recognize the Ethernet controller. It may be different for you since you have a 3508.
