RE: [LegacyUG] Master Source (SW) Comment problem - Attn Legacy staff, please

2009-09-24 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Jenny,

There are just a few templates where the Comments field appears within the
Source Info tab. We include it there because Elizabeth Mills suggested that
an explanation/evaluation of the source be included with the citation. You
are correct that whatever comments are entered in this field on the Source
Info tab of the Master Source are automatically included in the Comments
section of the Text/Comments tab. However, it does appear that the "Include
on reports" checkmark does not remove the comments from the citation.

I'll talk with Dave about this for a resolution. Thanks for your research
into this.

Further information about this. I now see why this is occurring. On
some SW templates (I have now seen it on Artifacts>Privately held and
Family Group Sheet>Privately held) there is a field named "Comments" on
the Source Info screen, the "main" screen for inputting Master Source
data. Any text which is entered into the usual "Comments about this
master source" field are automatically copied into the "Comments" field.
Obviously the "Comments" field is not picking up on the contents of the
checkbox for "Include on Reports" which appears under the "Comments
about this master source". (Nor the First time/Each time radio
buttons.)

I wonder if a Legacy staffer could comment on whether or not this is
intentional. I hope it is *not* because I usually use the "Comments
about this master source" for information which I do not wish to have
appear on Reports and where the entry is quite long I certainly don't
want it appearing every time the Master Source is cited. I can conceive
of occasions when one would want to add a "Comment" to be part of the
printed Master Source *and* "Comments about this master source" which
were not for publication.

For the moment I am working around the problem by including my long
not-for-publishing comments in the "Copy of the text from this master
source" field over which I have some control!

I think what's happened is that because what used to be there was actually a

US County Verifier under Tools and it would do a search through my database

when I hit it now I just get a spreadsheet looking table of all of the
counties with their formation dates. Can we not do a search though the file

I am generally fairly good at finding my way around the SW templates and
very frequently use the bog standard Internet one, but thought I'd just
seek LUGgers' opinions on this one.

I have just found a reference to someone in my family file in an
Obituary on the website at http://cbs5.tributes.com. He's not a
terribly important person on my tree, but I would like to Source my note

Has anyone else used an Obituary from this site as a Source? If so, can
you give details of which template you used and what you entered where,

[LegacyUG] Need your help - Legacy seminar video testing

2009-05-29 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Hello Legacy User Group-ers,

Two weeks ago in Hemet, California I presented a Genealogy Technology
seminar to a great group. I tried something new there, and recorded my
presentations. Two of the presentations were on Legacy.

If you don't have anything else to do this weekend :) and you want to view
these two presentations online, I'd invite you to do so. I'm looking for
your feedback in the area of technical problems that you might experience
with these videos. If you find anything, please email me directly at
ge...@legacyfamilytree.com. I want to be sure that we haven't overlooked
anything before we turn these videos on for the rest of the world. Thanks!

Legacy Family Tree: an Overview (54 minutes) -

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 U.S. Marriage Index template?

2009-05-26 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Vicki,

We added specific SourceWriter templates for those England/Wales records
because the indexes are at the national level. In the states, there is no
similar national index, every state does it differently.

Using Legacy's SourceWriter, the Internet > Database template works well for
all online databases.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 U.S. Marriage Index template?

Hello,

I have been handling the numerous State indexes (marriage, birth, death,
etc.) that have been slowly making their appearance online by treating them
as "generic websites".

I see that there are SourceWriter templates for such indexes if they are in
England or Wales, but cannot find templates for birth, marriage, or death if
they are from U.S. federal or State indexes.

I am wondering if the templates for U.S. indexes are somewhere in the
SourceWriter templates and I am just not seeing them, or are they not there?

If they are not there, how do other Legacy users handle these?

Vicki

RE: [LegacyUG] When to fill in the Repository?

2009-04-23 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Hey Brian,

I'm off to the airport but will quickly comment. First, is it possible that
you are reviewing the older videos? If I'm mentioning that the title should
be italicized, it seems like you are because v7's SourceWriter takes care of
that for you.

When a repository is required for the citation, per Evidence Explained, it
will be one of the listed fields. If not, it won't be there but the
repository tab is still available.

Thanks,

Geoff Rasmussen

Subject: [LegacyUG] When to fill in the Repository?

Hi,
I'm using the newest Legacy 7 version.

When adding a master source using Source Writer there is a tab for
"Repository" where one can fill in where the source is located. The
video "Legacy's Ultimate Guide to Sources" section "2) Add a New Source"
has Geoff Rasmussen using the example of adding a new source which is a
book. He mentions that since a book is published the title should be in
italics. He then shows the Repository tab which listed the Family
History Library in Utah.

Also, in the Legacy video "Researching w/Legacy: Events & Chronologies",
section "2 - Census Records" has Geoff entering a sample census record
that he found at Ancestry. After entering the source information, Geoff
says to "be sure to fill in the repository".

So, for the most part I've been filling in the address of the Repository
when I know it.

However, I've been looking at Elizabeth Shown Mills' book "Evidence
Explained" she seems to indicate only non-published material has the
repository cited.
"2.19 Citing Repositories
When citing manuscripts that exist in only one place, the identity of
that repository is an essential part of our citation. When citing books,
film, and other published materials that are widely available, the name
of the repository at which we used the source is not included in our
formal citation."

"2.33 Core Elements to Cite
...Within this architecture, a website is not a repository.
Conceptually, the repository is the Internet or the World Wide Web. The
distinction matters. When a citation template within our data-management
software asks us to identify a repository, we invoke a basic rule
covered at 2.19: in published citations, repositories are cited only for
manuscript material exclusive to the repository where we used it.
Repositories are not cited for published sources. To enter a website's
name as our repository would be to say that the website's name I not an
essential part of the citation. Therefore, the software might
automatically omit it in printing out reference notes."

So, two questions:
1. Using Legacy, should one always fill in the Repository when known or
only when it is for unpublished material?
2. Does the Legacy software automatically figure out if the Repository
should be included in the citation and only put it in when appropriate?

Thanks,
Brian

RE: [LegacyUG] Picture of census record?

2009-04-02 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Brian,

Here's my thoughts

I transcribe the information both as part of the source detail text and as
part of the event notes because I don't know in the future what I'm going to
do. Say in the future I want to share a GEDCOM file with someone else, but
don't want to include the events/facts. Because the detail text has the
transcription, they too will receive this transcription if that particular
citation is also attached to vital events (birth, marriage, etc.).

I do add the picture to both places for the same reasons. Maybe I didn't
mention that in the video? I don't know, I'd have to go back and check.

Hi,
In the Legacy Training video "Researching with Legacy: Events and
Chronologies" Geoff Rasmussen gives an example of entering a census
record. 1st he shows creating the Master Source; then the Detail
Source. In the Detail Source the video shows him putting a
transcription of the record in the "Text/Comments" tab. However, he
doesn't put a picture or image of the census record in the "Multimedia"
tab before he tells us to enter "Save". He goes on to show how to enter
the "Event" as "Census" and once again has the record transcribed, but
this time in the "Notes" tab under the actual event. He then points to
the picture icon and says we may want to save a picture of the census
there.

Questions:
1. Why transcribe the record two times (once under the Source Detail
and a 2nd time under the Notes)? Is there a reason for this redundancy?
2. Why put the picture of the census under the Event "Census" rather
than in the Source Detail? Or, should one do both?

Thanks,
Brian

Welcome to the Legacy7 Sourcing Nightmare. If you'll check the List
archives for June, July, August, and September, you'll see just a few posts
about source-related bugs.
There's no solution, although Geoff has promised a fix "Soon" (a month ago).
If you have a client waiting for a report, I'd suggest you quickly backtrack
to Legacy6 and stay there until the next update is issued and given a long
vigorous test by users. It's been impossible to produce any type of usable
Legacy7 report containing sources for over 4 months although I believe some
have been successful in printing reports direct from Legacy as long as they
haven't included certain SourceWriter templates. Of course, producing a
hardcopy is probably not an option in your situation.

Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news, so I won't compound things by
mentioning the list posting rules.

You can't help but be aware that the Source Conversion Tool was a primary
reason many people "switched" to Legacy. I hope that every effort is being
made to get this tool done and made available to owners of Legacy Family

1851? It is the 1851 census of England, so is there any point in putting it

RE: [LegacyUG] other schedules

2008-09-29 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Here's the status on sources. Dave is almost finished reprogramming the
citation stuff for reports. We're also almost finished adding all of the
missing media (online images, microfilm, etc.) for which there were no
specific models in Evidence Explained. We're also working on the override at
the master source level. We're also working on a special 'web publishing'
GEDCOM output to retain the proper formatting for citations. I don't know
the status of the conversion tool. Now that the media will be complete for
the templates, we can also work on adding other templates that have been
requested, such as the different schedules. That's the latest, thanks all
for your patience.

Is Legacy planning on coming out with templates for the slave schedules and
the mortality schedules? It is a pain to have to override on every entry
(you can't override on the sources, only on the detail)

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Sourcewriter templates - Footnote/Endnote Citation etc

Hi David,

The reason for this is that this template was patterned after the model in
Evidence Explained by Elizabeth Mills. You can modify it by clicking on the
override link. Here you can add in the given names.

etc

Hi everyone,

I have only just started to look at the new 'sourcewriter templates', so
could quite easiliy be missing something here.

This is specifically to do with the 'Letter' template, but may well be
applicable to other templates.

At the end of the Footnote/Endnote Citation, the information reads:
"privately held by Brookes" and the Subsequent Citation reads "Brookes to
Brookes, 11 Mar 2008".

Apart from the issue that I hate being refered to by my surname, there are
many Brookes surnames in my database (obvious really!!)

Is there a way of altering the template 'output' so that it reads my (and
the sender's) full name. The only way I can get it to read how I wish is by
putting my full name in the Surname box of the template, and don't really
want to do this as there is a separate box for first names.

I am probably missing a setting somewhere along the line, but would be
really grateful of any help, or logical reason why the template has been set
up in this way.

Best wishes

David

Would it be possible to attach to each template description an
indication of where in the Evidence Explained book, it is described? A
simple section reference would suffice. Better still - allow us to enter
the section reference and see what matches!

I'm convinced that this would help to minimise the number of How-To

That will be wonderful, Geoff. Thanks. I guess I don't dare ask

One thing I noticed with another program is that if the citation can
be exported with the gedcom tag of "title" and maintain its formatting
that it would work great in TNG.

Subject: [LegacyUG] creating custom reports

Hello all,

I recently switched to using Legacy and am having a devil of a time figuring
out how to create custom reports. I must be missing something!
Could anyone tell me how I might go about creating a custom report? I would
like to print a list of all individuals who got married during a certain
period of time and in a certain place?
Or say a list of burial dates and places for all individuals in my file?
That when I can go on a road trip, I will know which individuals are buried
in a particular cemetery, so when I get there I can try and acquire the plot
cards, and maybe even a picture of any headstones.

I hope someone can help! Thanks!

Kirsten,

Eureka! subject to this being the same in Word as in OOo.

I changed the Footnote reference number in OOo to Roman Numerals. The only
references which appeared in the footnotes were those relating to Vital
Events - Name, BMDs etc.

The Other Events eg. Residence, Occupation, Miliary Service etc. still
appeared in the text in Arabic Numerals and were not included in the
Footnotes.

Perhaps you can check this in Word?

Subject: [LegacyUG] v7 to v6 with v7 gedcom

Since this has been a hot topic, I thought I would experiment to see the
outcome.
[I am running on a laptop with XP pro, v7 deluxe installed in
c\programs\legacy]

I installed v6 deluxe to C:\legacy and created an empty database. A side
note, I had saved the usr files from v6 before I upgraded to v7 and
copied them into the newly installed v6.

I closed v6, opened v7 deluxe and created two gedcoms with different
names. One with 5.5 option, adding photo, path, event description to
include all the options. I also created a second gedcom using the Legacy
gedcom option with no changes to the default.

I closed v7, opened v6 and imported the 5.5 gedcom into the newly
created empty database. I repeated the process with the Legacy gedcom to
another empty database. in v6.

Both gedcoms resulted in the same number of individuals and families.
Both created the same error log with one unrecognized field [I meant to
copy it, but was a bit tired at this point, but it was one that
contained all the text/comments for sources based on what was copied to
the notes in the v6 database]

The major issue with both gedcoms was that

any source that contained text/comments created in v7 was GONE. All
source text that had been entered in v6 remained in the database, but
that which had been added since I upgraded did not import, it was also
missing altogether from any of the error logs. All the sources in v7 had
been created with the basic source writer or using existing sources that
had been created in past versions of Legacy.

To explain this a little better, My method of sourcing is to select a
master source, enter the specifics in the description field, and enter a
date. I use the text/comments to copy and paste the specific
information. For example, the Norwegian census data is posted in a
database format. I copy it to notepad, then paste it into the
text/comments field of the source citation. I do the same with IGI/VRI
extracted records in my citations. All of the citations that were
created in v7 were missing the copied text/comments portion of the
citation. All of the citations that had been created in v6 or earlier
contained the pasted text. This was double checked to confirm that the
data was in v7,but did not import with the gedcom in either option.

Guess what? I saw the new option today that Dave added that will allow you
to have the "true" RTF footnotes (as it currently is in v7) or the normal
footnotes as they were in v6. Dave has also corrected your footnote

the fixes have been confirmed by the testing team, a new general release

Marie:

Thanks so much for checking this out. Your results are a little different
from mine but sound vaguely like what Ruth is experiencing. If you can get
a decent RTF report, it's possible you might be on the track of something
that could help us both out, at least temporarily. I don't care at all for
the "sources as footnotes" format even in one-generation reports since my
records are heavily sourced and insertion of the footnotes causes a single
family group to be split up over several pages. I haven't worked with
linked footnotes in Word before; it seems to resist my attempts to move them
all to the end of the report but there may be an option somewhere to change
that. I'll keep experimenting. It's interesting, though, that the
formatting of the source citations themselves seems to be better in the
footnotes version than in the endnotes version. Oh, my. This is like
having to learn about changing a fan belt when I just want to get in the car
and drive!

And yes, I've reported the bug(s?) and they've been confirmed but that's
been weeks ago so I don't feel hopeful about a quick fix. It'll surely be
released the day after I go back to v.6. Probably when more users try
producing reports in a format for editing there will be much wailing and
gnashing of teeth.

Thanks again for your help.

Kirsten

Kirsten,

I just tried my first Descendant Report, 2 generation, RTF, opened with Word
2000. First time checked sources as footnotes. Beautiful, perfect.
Second time I checked sources as endnotes. What a mess. The notes are all
mixed in with the report, in no particular order. It didn't seem to make
any difference whether the sources were written with Source Writer or not.

Has support mentioned if this is a bug that will hopefully be worked out in
an update in the near future or is it a bug that we'll have to wait for a
while to be fixed?

an LDS Ancestral File v4?

These records show each family member with a unique AFN number under the
title Family Group Record. If you click a person's name the main title
changes to Individual Record.

If you then click Submitter(s), you get the list of people you contributed.
Microfilm numbers are apparently not applicable, but there are Submission
numbers assigned to each contributor.

I'm completely confused what info to capture and which Source Wizard
template to use.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Now Available in German and Swedish

2008-08-18 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Surprise, Arizona, August 18, 2008 -- Millennia Corporation, a leader in
family history software, today announced that its software, Legacy Family
Tree, is now available in two new languages: Deutsch (German) and Svenska
(Swedish).

The software, used by beginners and professionals to record, plan, and share
their family trees, is now the premier choice for German and Swedish
researchers. Legacy is also available in Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, and
English editions.

"Making genealogy software available to researchers in their native language
is a big step in helping the world trace their family trees," said Dave
Berdan, president of Millennia Corporation. "This is an exciting day for us
to help German and Swedish researchers."

Jenny,

I'm not sure. If this were possible, the entire citation that you create

Would it be possible to have something similar within Legacy so that one
can type in a complete Source Citation, primary and subsequent versions,
rather than use Templates? (In other words, something like the
Overrides screen.) ESM gives examples of numerous Citations, many of
which can be reproduced using SourceWriter Templates - but not all. It
is not possible to replicate these Citations using the Basic Style.

I realise we have the Overrides screen now, but this can't be accessed
without using a Master Source first and there are occasions when I would
like to be able to go directly to the Overrides screen.

RE: [LegacyUG] V7 Sources: Nifty formatting lost in gedcom output

2008-08-15 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Dave and I met about this yesterday and have some ideas.

First of all, one of our great challenges when developing the SourceWriter was
to ensure that no information is lost when sharing via GEDCOM. Because the
GEDCOM standard does not have specific fields for the specific SourceWriter
fields, Legacy has to "break apart" the nice EE-style citations into the source
fields as accepted by GEDCOM, namely title, author, publication, etc. So, while
no SourceWriter information is lost, the formatting is not retained when
exporting.

But...the SourceWriter citations are so nice :) that it'd sure be great if when
publishing to the web, such as to TNG, WorldConnect, and other GEDCOM-based
publishing cites, that Legacy's SourceWriter citations were preserved.

Therefore, we have some ideas about adding a new GEDCOM Export option. When you
go to the GEDCOM Export screen, we could add new choice under the "Produce File
For" drop-down list called "The Web" or "GEDCOM-based publishing" or something
like that. With this option selected, when the GEDCOM is uploaded to the site
of choice, the entire citation will read as it is displayed in the
Footnote/Endnote Citation of the output preview. This new export option would
also set certain privacy defaults and others.

If this makes sense to any of you, would this solution be adequate?

Thanks,

Geoff Rasmussen

Subject: [LegacyUG] V7 Sources: Nifty formatting lost in gedcom output

Do you happen to find yourself in the following three categories?

1) You use Legacy v7 sourcewriter and have converted some/all of your sources
2) You publish to the web using TNG
3) You strongly desire to have these sources formatted according to Evidence
Explained

If so, please note that the gedcom output from Legacy does not lend itself to
formatting the same way the web site as it does in Legacy reports. I was so
excited that Legacy came up with sourcewriter and that we could finally format
our sources the way that the professional genealogy field does. The
sourcewriter tool is easy to use and I think it's going to help many people get
over a fear of sourcing.

This is all great! However, for those of us who publish to the web, all is
lost in the translation to gedcom. This is a huge disappointment to me! We
must either find a way to get TNG to re-format the gedcom data or find a way to
have Legacy export the sources in the same way they are presented on the screen.

I am at a loss on how to proceed. I have converted 3/4 of my census data to
the new source format, but on my TNG website, these sources are still a mess.
If you would like to respond off-line, I would sure love to have some fellow
collaborators on working out this issue.

We're excited to announce that our new Wall Chart Printing service is now
ready to go! With just a few clicks in the new Legacy Charting software,
your custom designed chart can be ordered for delivery to your front door.

Legacy Charting, which is included with the new Legacy Family Tree 7.0,
includes 18 different styles of wall charts, including ancestor, descendant,
DNA, fan, hour glass, and bow tie charts. Each chart can be fully customized
and can include full color pictures, custom text boxes, and even your own
digital pictures for the background. Charts can be printed on regular white
paper, or you can choose beautiful photo glossy paper, or even have it
printed on matte canvas.

To order your chart, in Legacy Charting, click on the Publish tab, then
click on the Order Chart button. Here you can select your paper type and
quantity. With an Internet connection, Legacy Charting will display the
total price of the chart based on the size and selected options. No more
wondering what the cost of the chart will be when you are ready to purchase
it. If the displayed cost is a little out of range, just change the size of
the boxes on the Appearance tab and the chart cost will automatically be
adjusted.

Michele,

You have selected the correct template, as the actual source you are
consulting is the newspaper. Most obits make no reference of the author, so
yes, just leave the author fields blank. The templates are flexible enough
that you can leave a field blank if you wish, and the formatting should
usually still work out fine.

Death Records > Death Certificate > Local/County level > Original.

The term "original" is probably a bit misleading for now. We'll come up with
better phrasing in the future. But this is the specific template that was
intended for your situation.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Detail vs Event Data

2008-06-21 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Bob,

You're right. Copying/pasting is the right thing to do here. Yes, it is
redundant to have the census transcription both in the event notes and in the
source detail text. But if it's just a copy/paste which doesn't take too much
time, it's not time totally wasted. The reason why I put it in both places is
because right now I don't know all of what I want to accomplish in the future.
Maybe I want that transcription in the event notes for easier analysis of the
chronology. But when I share a GEDCOM with someone else, maybe I want to have
the transcription of the source in the source details. So, a little duplication
now, but in the future you'll always be glad that you don't have to go retype
it again somewhere else.

I wouldn't suggest recreating the events, just the sources for the existing
events.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Source Detail vs Event Data

I've been trying to fathom the disc 5 instructions relative to using the
'Source/Write System' and entering census records. I'm having a bit of trouble
understanding these instructions.

(1) When adding an event, the source is 'selected' and 'step 1' (setting the
source clipboard) recommendation on the video is to 'transcribe all persons
shown on the census record' into the text box during the source build, then
'save'. Next is 'step 2' to 'add' the census event to the individual and
'transcribe the information'. After entering the 'event', 'date', and 'place'
it tells me to then 'transcribe all persons shown on the census record'! This
appears to be redundant, and if these instructions are to be followed, should I
have 'copied' the data from the first entry, and 'pasted' it to this step?
Where am I going wrong in my thinking? If I enter all persons from the census
in step one, why am, I re-entering it in step 2?

2) Another anomaly I seem to have encountered. In trying to 'correct/change'
an old event by re-installing the census event data under the sourcewriter, I
see that the data is entered twice for all children in the Chronology view. To
add to the confusion, in this view, there is a long underline preceding each of
the children entered in the older format. Is there a recommendation on how to
re-enter the data without the duplication showign up in the Chronology view?
Perhaps I should only use the sourcewriter for 'new' additions? I really do
like the way the data is presented in book and other reports by using the
sourcewriter, but

Observations and guidance solicited for this 'noob'.

Robert, What Michele and I were questioning has to do with some specific
detail questions on Legacy's Source Writer. Our specific question addresses

things that are found on every census (Person of interest, dwelling & family

numbers.), rather than other extraneous information that varied from census
to census.

Neither the 1930 nor the 1880 templates, for example, allows you to input
the person of interest, while 1870 and others do allow you to input this
information. (There may be others, I just remembered those two off the top
of my head.) There are similar inconsistencies concerning inclusion of the
family number. We wondered why this is so.

Jenny,

Let's talk about it then. Elizabeth Mills has certainly provided the
researcher with flexibility to split or lump. What specific fields would you
want to be included with the master source? After deciding that, we'd need
to then come up with a simple, understandable source type name for the
organizational hierarchy of the selections in step 1 of the SourceWriter.

fields for entering the details of the sender, the recipient and the

NO fields for Detail Information, other than Surety Level, Recorded Date

every single e-mail one wishes to record.

NO! NO! NO! that is taking splitting to the nth degree and I refuse!

I've just checked out the template for Letters and I see that is the

know that several of them have full Detail Information screens which
allow for one Master Source and many Details so I can't imagine why the
E-mail and Letter (and other?) templates are like this.

I will definitely have to revert to Basic Source System for
correspondence if we can't have the option to use SourceWriter in
lumping fashion and that will be a real PITA.

I remember this being asked, but don't recall it ever being answered.

If one has OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZE, SOURCES and has "SOURCEWRITER" ticked in
lower left, then you are "forced" to always use Sourcewriter. No way to use

the "basic" system when you are updating someone - without leaving that
person and coming back to these options and then returning to the person.

HOWEVER, if you select BASIC SOURCE SYSTEMS on the options screen, AND if
you check the box "ask which system to use . . . ", then when you try to add

a new source you get a pop-up box that asks which method you want to use
(Basic or SourceWriter).

LEGACY Support - maybe a better way??: There's a lot of space by that "ADD
A NEW SOURCE" button. Why not make 2 buttons there:
ADD A NEW SOURCE-BASIC
ADD A NEW SOURCE-SOURCEWRITER

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation Original Marriage Cert

Kirsten,

Yes, Legacy's SourceWriter is and will continue to expand on Evidence
Explained. We are currently working on adding all of the media that were not
modeled with each individual model in EE. We'll release this in free
updates. We are also making progress right now on adding specific templates
for UK BMDs and census records. These will come with time. As Elizabeth
Mills states in her book, there's no way that she could provide models for
all sources throughout the world, but she did do a good job in my opinion of
providing the needed background. Legacy will make this easier though, both
now and in future development.

What Penny describes as the Texas procedure for marriage licenses and
certificates sounds very much like that followed in the past in California
and Kansas (although by now it's probably streamlined and automated somehow)
and, in fact, my own originals were folded to mailing size at one time. So
I agree with what she's said, but still feel that the Artifact template in
Legacy is the best citation fit. And while my own examples probably do
carry a notation on the backs about where they were recorded, I'm not
inclined to dismantle some rather expensive framing jobs for the sake of
getting that additional bit of info for a citation

It seems very odd that, since marriage licenses and certificates are a
fairly common "family paper" and that the same procedure was apparently
followed in at least a few states, if not all, Mills didn't include a
specific citation format for them or at least indicate how they should be
treated. Perhaps Legacy's Source Writer needs to expand on _EE_?

Denise, I think I'm going to have to disagree on this question with others
who have replied thus far.

Birth and death certificates, at least in Texas, are now and have always
been handled a little differently than marriage certificates. I don't know
if this holds true for other states - probably not in all of them.

I have three original "marriage certificates" from the State of Texas: my
own, my parents, and my paternal grandparents.I also have a certified
copy of my own marriage cert. and am, therefore, able to compare to see the
differences.

In Texas, these are what are issued as "marriage licenses". Couple goes to
the County Clerk to get one; once the prerequisites are met, it's signed &
issued by said County Clerk, and the couple takes it with them to whomever
is going to perform the wedding ceremony. The person who performs the rites
(whether minister or other) then signs and fills in the date and location of
the ceremony and he/she sends it back to the issuing County Clerk for
recording. The Co. Clerk then records it - (by making an exact transcript
that looks very much like the original except that the signatures (of the
minister/JP and the County Clerk) are typed in instead of actually signed.
The Clerk then mails the original back to the couple. When a certified copy
is later issued, it's not a photocopy of the original, it's a copy of the
transcribed record held in the Clerk's office (duly signed & stamped by the
current County Clerk or authorized personnel as being authentic).

On the back of the **originals** is where you find where exactly this
marriage is recorded in Texas. It will say something like:
Filed the 9th day of April 1935
W.A. Tittle (actual signature)
Clerk County Court of Terry County
Recorded in Book 3, Page 208 of Marriage Records

This is a long way around to say: You bet I would put the citation in
stating who holds the original. I record the provenance of an original
marriage record just as I would the provenance of a family Bible. I
certainly will find a way (when I re-enter these via Source Writer) to
include where the certificate was recorded. Others will be able to find it
from that; but it needs to be noted that the original still exists and who
has it.

I haven't looked at this in Legacy 7, but I would think it would be
government records because it's issued under the authority of a state;
however, unless I can find a way to note both where the certificate is
recorded (e.g. County name, Marriage Book #, and page) plus who holds the
original, then I'll have to re-think it.

Just my long-winded thoughts on the subject,
Penny

Janis,

The source was a book compiled by my great uncle. I had BMD info for each
particular person in the Source Details. I also had a paragraph from the
Preface in the Master Source Text/Comments.

>From the Master Source List, I created a new source using the SourceWriter
Template. I rewrote the Master Source Text, editing just a little from what
I had written originally. As far as I can remember now, I clicked on the
new source first, chose "Combine Highlighted Source" then clicked on the old
source and then clicked again. This source was attached to several areas,
Name, Birth, Marriage, and some Residence events. I have just checked one
more time and all the details are still there, just as I entered them on
Legacy 6.

Hope this helps.

tagging the ones who are using this source before I start, removing the tag

Geoff,

When you follow this procedure, do your reports generate the results
you want? Here is the problem I have had with the new Source Writer.
The Master Source Text prints on every citation, not just the first
time the source is cited. I have chosen the correct option in all the
appropriate places, but to no avail. The Source Detail does not print
at all in subsequent citations. I have submitted this as a bug
report. I thought the problem was related to the fact that I used the
Combine button, but I get the same problem with a brand new source
entered using the Source Writer. I also tried a new source going back
to the Basic Source screen and the results in the report were exactly
what I wanted, so I decided the problem must be in the new Source
Writer.

I do love the new templates. I'm waiting patiently for the kinks to
be ironed out.

[LegacyUG] Source conversion

2008-06-18 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
As we know, the Source Conversion tool is not yet done. I don't know when it
will be. And I've learned that I'm not going to make any statements with the
word "soon" in it. :) I just simply don't know. So...if we do have sources
that we want to convert to the SourceWriter format, we have to manually do
this for now. I'll present the "flow" of how I've been doing mine, which is
not to say that it is the correct method for everyone. Keep in mind that I,
too, am new to this and am open to others' ideas/feedback.

First of all, I personally am NOT going back through ALL of my sources to
convert them to the SourceWriter format. With tens of thousands of
citations, I would never get back to research if I solely concentrated on
this. Rather, when I'm adding new sources, I always use the SourceWriter.
And when I'm currently researching a family that has Basic Style citations,
I work to convert those citations. A citation consists of both the master
source and the source detail. Here is my process for now

1) Open the Assigned Sources list for an individual by clicking on the
Sources icon. Here I can see which existing citations are Basic Style and
which are SourceWriter style. The SourceWriter style citations have a small
black bullet at the beginning in the Source List Name column.

2) When I locate a Basic Style source in this list, I click on it so it is
highlighted. Then I copy/paste the entire Footnote/Endnote Citation from the
Output tab into a Word Processor. I do the same for all of the text on the
Text/Comments tab. I also make note of the Repository and any Pictures. With
this text pasted into my Word Processor, I have everything I need to create
the new SourceWriter source.

3) Using the Source Clipboard, I create the SourceWriter version of this
source, entering all of the pieces into the correct fields, and pasting the
text/comments/etc. from my word processor. If you're not comfortable with
the Source Clipboard, I strongly suggest that you become comfortable with
it. It will change your lifeThe Preview video of the Sources training CD
at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.net/videos/previews/sources/sources_preview.html
teaches how to use the Source Clipboard.

4) Once the Source Clipboard is set up, using the clipboard's single blue
bar button, I locate and click on each Basic Style source in the Assigned
Sources list, and paste the source from the clipboard into the appropriate
event.

5) Each event will now have both the Basic Style source and the SourceWriter
style source. Simply click on the Basic Style source, and click on the
Remove button. Do this until each Basic Style source is gone, and is
replaced with the SourceWriter version.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each person who shares the IDENTICAL Basic Style
source (master source and citation).

Maybe there's a better way? I haven't yet experimented with the Combine
button in the Master Source List, but from what a couple of you have
reported, this method doesn't yet do the job.

RE: [LegacyUG] Old Source Detail associated with newly Merged Master Sources

2008-06-18 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Gail,

I asked Dave about this last night and this was his response:

"Well, it makes a body think... I don't think we have even looked at the
combine master sources code on the master source list. If someone chooses
an old master source (with various detail citations using it) and then
combines it with a new SourceWriter master source, the citations would point
to the new master source but the old detail fields wouldn't be moved to the
new detail fields. I don't even know how we would do that. We wouldn't
know where to put the info. Looks like we need a conversion tool... So,
yes, right now the new detail fields would be blank... with no way to show
the old detail info."

I'll respond in my next email on how I'm converting my sources

Subject: [LegacyUG] Old Source Detail associated with newly Merged Master
Sources

I decided to start a new topic here for this question. I created a
new master source for a census. Then I merged an existing master
source used by 5 individuals into the new master source. The master
source looked good and the source detail does seem to have stayed
attached to the new master.

The problem is that, while I can see the beginning of the "old" detail
on the assigned sources screen, I cannot access it to update it. When
I click "Edit Detail," the new Source Detail template pops up with
empty fields. I need a way to get to my old data to show up somewhere
so that I can use it to update the new fields.

Am I missing something else obvious? Geoff, is this how you are
merging sources or are you creating all the new masters with out
merging the old ones in and then re-creating and attaching all the
detail separately?

RE: [LegacyUG] Subsequent Source Citation Printing Instead of Full Citation (Version 7)

2008-06-18 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Dave B. has confirmed that this is something he needs to take a look at.
Currently, what happens is that the first time the master source is used, it
will use the Footnote/Endnote variation. The second time the master source
is used, even if the detail is different this time, it will only use the
subsequent citation format. So, you're not missing something. Rather, Dave
is working on tweaking this so it works as would be expected.

My apologies if this has been asked and previously answered; I checked the
archives but they are so massive I may have missed it.

I'm a long time Legacy user who has just upgraded to Version 7. I used the
Source Writer to create a citation to the 1850 census, then went to
print-out a
Family Group Sheet.

The 1850 census is the first citation of several; citation #1 is printing
out
in the subsequent citation format instead of the full citation format.

I've fiddled with my Source settings on both the report options menu and the
customize menu and it seems to make no difference.

Is this a bug, or is there something I'm missing?

Sounds good to me BUT only if it works as you wrote; whereas the pop up

Your experience below has given me what I think could be a good idea. You,
and others have not noticed that there were more fields to be filled in. In
our Merging feature, when comparing two individuals, if there are more
events than will fit on the screen, you can scroll to view them. If you
attempt to merge the two people without scrolling to see all of the events,
Legacy pops up a statement saying "You haven't looked at all of the events
yet. Would you still like to merge the people anyway?"

What do you think about this idea - if you click on the Save button in the
SourceWriter, but there are more fields that you haven't scrolled down to
see, Legacy could pop up a statement/question about the additional fields.
This may prevent us from not noticing the additional fields.

Thanks Dave! Man, I know it's getting pretty late bacause I just
totally missed the scroll bar on my detail screen! Now it works
perfectly!! It's really too bad the fields can't all fit on one page
because I'll bet you that more people than just me are going to
overlook this too. It might be worth it to try to reformat this a
little in a future update.

Geoff, I apologize for taking up so much of your time on this because
I know you are very busy with other stuff right now. I think we will
all really appreciate the hard work you have put into this source
writer once we get used to using the input fields.

I still would love it if you could share with us some of the practices
you have used in converting your sources over. Do you update a single
census master source for a single county and then convert all the
detail associated with that new source, or do you work through all the
master sources first and then work through the myriad details attached
to them? This is just something that I'm sure would benefit many of
us. You could sort of bring us along on your learning curve.

Anyway, I can now go to sleep and dream about tomorrow's task ahead of
me in converting at least some of my census sources. The output looks
good to me now!

I have only seen this so far in the IGI template as I have not yet
investigated the others, but it might well apply elsewhere.

I have entered Source Details for an IGI record and also put some
information on the Source Text section of the next tab and ticked for
this to be included on Reports. On the Output Preview of the Citation
on the Detail Information tab everything shows correctly, but on the
Output tab on the Assigned Sources Screen and on a Report there is an
error in punctuation.

Example: "... batch no. C070241.; Parents: Rd Faith & Sarah."

Note the extra full stop or period before the semi-colon which separates
the last Detail from the Source Text. If Source Text is not included on
a Report, the Citation correctly ends with a full stop/period. (In the
Output Preview it correctly shows with only a semi-colon between the
last Detail item and the Source Text.)

OK, now I think I see the issue here. Either you are selecting a
different master source type or somehow you are in possession of a
different/better version of this same template. My template (when I
select census records as the source type, followed by > 1) United
States > 2) Federal Census Records > 3) 1850 population schedule > 4)
online images) for the master source pops up and I fill it in.

Then, my Step 3: Add Source Detail screen reads:
Jurisdiction City
Roll
Page
Dwelling No.
Family No.
ID of Person
Surety Level
Recorded Date
File ID

Am I going crazy here or am I missing something obvious?

Well, if I found the 1850 census *online* at Ancestry.com, wouldn't I
want/need to provide an accessed date for when I found it online?
There is no place in Legacy within the 1850 US Census (found online)
template to provide the accessed date.

The EE template for the 1850 US census found online is found on page
240 of EE. The fields shown are as follows:

Census ID: 1850 U. S. Census
Jurisdiction: Marion County, Iowa
Schedule: population schedule
Civil Division: Lake Prairie
Page ID: p. 290 (stamped)
Household ID: dwelling 151, family 156
Person(s): Virgil W. and Wyatt B. Earp
Item Type or Format: digital image
Website Title: Ancestry.com [in italics]
URL (Digital Location): http://www.ancestry.com
Accessed Date: accessed 16 January 2006
Credit Line: citing NARA microfilm publication M432, roll 187

Legacy's template for an online census does not contain an "accessed
date" field as required above. It only provides a "publish date"
field, which, unfortunately, does not appear on Legacy's output
preview for the footnote.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean when you say that you have
to scroll down for it. Are you talking about scrolling down through
the source type list to select a different template than the one I
have described?

Hi Geoff, now I'm a little confused. On the Master Source Definition
tab for a census, I see a "publish date" field and I see a "recorded
date" field down at the botton of the screen in the gray part.

I see that when I type something in the "publish date" field, it shows
up in the bibliography output (and not beside the accessed date in the
footnote). When I type something into the "recorded date" on this
same screen, it does not seem to affect the output in either place.

Now moving on to the source detail screen...
When I click to edit the source detail, I see a place to enter a
"recorded" date there as well. However, this too, seems to have no
effect on the footnote or bibliography output.

I do not see a "date accessed" field at all on any of the screens. I
am specifically looking at a 1920 US Census template. Maybe it is on
the others?

Thanks for any explanations to help clear this up for me!

Gail,

The Date Accessed field is actually in the Source Detail screen. You may be
confusing this with the Publish Date, which is in the master source. The
publish date should be the date when the database was published.

I actually used to split my census sources at the city level, but am now

It seems that the formatting for the "accessed date" is set to be
input at the master source level, rather than the citation detail
level. For users who lump their census entries by county or by year
(like myself), then the date will not be applicable for subsequent
census findings for different families. If no date is entered in this
spot, though, the result is an empty space before the closing
parentheses.

The order of the source output seems to allow for the blending of the
order of master source components and detail components, so I am not
sure why we could not give the user the choice of where to include the
accessed date.

Geoff, how have you been handling this issue with your own data so
far?? I believe you had stated that you lump master census sources by
county as well, right?

I am hesitant to convert too many of my census master sources before I
know how this issue may be addressed. If I have somehow missed a note
saying that issue is on a list to be fixed in an upcoming update, I
apologize for the duplication of notes.

I truly believe this tool is going to help thousands of genealogists
improve their desire and ability to cite sources more accurately and
completely! Kudos to the Legacy team!!

[LegacyUG] Legacy Charting - Important Update Instructions

2008-06-13 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
This message is important to read only if you at any time installed the
pre-release edition of Legacy Charting AND you installed Legacy 7.

Important Update Instructions:

As you may know, Legacy Charting's Pre-Release Edition will expire on June
15, 2008. When you installed Legacy 7.0 Deluxe edition, Legacy was supposed
to "override" the Pre-Release edition of Legacy Charting with the Deluxe
edition of Legacy Charting. Well...it didn't. We've identified the small
glitch and have corrected it.

Therefore, if you installed both the Pre-Release Edition of Legacy Charting
AND you installed Legacy 7.0 Deluxe Edition, you will need to download a
special update.

Before June 15

If you do this before June 15, all you need to do is open Legacy Charting,
click on the Tips & Updates tab, and click on the button in the Updates
section to download and install the new update.

June 15 or after

If you do this on or after June 15, when you try to run Legacy Charting, you
will receive a message that directs you to the Legacy Charting website.
There you will find a link to download the update. Or, just click here to
download and install the update.

I think the template you are looking for regarding the letter is the

I have the original of a card that has on the front:
International Certificate of Inoculation and Vaccination as approved by
World Health Organization and The Pan American Sanitary Organization. It has

the traveler's name, address, DOB typed in and the traveler's signature.
Below this is Federal Security Agency U.S. Public Health Service For sale by

the superintendent of documents, U.S. Government Printing Office Washington,

D. C. - Price $1.25 per 100 copies. Below this is PHS-731 (IHR) Rev. 12-48
On the back is area for the physician to write in the nature of the vaccine,

date, dose, physician's signature. This has the entries in handwriting.

I did not find what to use in the SourceWriter. I looked at Evidence
Explained and did not see what might fit. I looked at Passports p. 619 and
Chapter 3 Archives & Artifacts.

Another problem is EE has very little for when you have the original
document. I would appreciate ideas on how to source when you have the
original document. I used SourceWriter for a letter and it enters privately
held by the person the letter was written to. That person is deceased and I
have the original. I used the override to change to privately held and my
name.

Thank you,

written by Dale P. Woodmansee, 1989. People have entered his work on the

How were my source entered in the past- I am a former FTM user and when you

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy7--question on source writer

2008-06-08 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Melanie,

The Film ID is the repository's method of describing/identifying the film,
such as "FHL microfilm" for the Family History Library. When the Film ID is
not automatically filled in for you by the SourceWriter, there will be some
sample text in the field giving you an idea of what to fill in there. The
FHL Film Number is the actual microfilm number as given by the FHL. The
details should go in the fields in Step 3 of the SourceWriter. In many of
the templates, the v., p., etc. are filled in for you. If those aren't
included, and you want to make the citation more understandable, by all
means, add to it.

One thing I like about Evidence Explained is that throughout, Elizabeth
Mills suggests that the citations can be flexible and adjusted depending
upon our needs. Also, just because there is a field, doesn't mean that you
MUST fill it in. They are guidelines to help you be consistent, but we
should be careful that the templates don't run us.

Most but not all of my sources entered in V6 are UK specific and include a
number of original birth, marriage and death certificates. I stress these
are originals and not copies. They are hand written, issued at the time of
registration and many have postage stamps affixed and official embossed
marks. These are my sources so when I use SourceWriter I can choose the
source type as 'Birth records' for example and the type of birth record as
'Birth certificate'. However the next question is 'Where is the certificate
held?' My view is that I hold it but at the very least a copy of it can be
found elsewhere. The only choices we have though are 'Held at local/county
level' and 'Held at state/provincial level'. Given the GRO setup in England
I don't see either of these as appropriate although I can see how either
might apply. Will there be any flexibility in the wording or user choice to
create new repository locations?

RE: [LegacyUG] V7 clipboard use

2008-06-07 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
M,

Bring up the source detail is behaving as it always has. In other words,
when the clipboard button is clicked, you have already assigned the master
source, and now you just need to enter the detail information. Maybe you
haven't yet set the clipboard with the master source. Click on the top
button to do this first.

Regarding the 5 different tabs. We actually removed this because 1) it was
hardly used; 2) when it was used, people thought it was supposed to do
something else. Anyways, it was just way too confusing. We've had many
people now thank us for removing this. You can still save/load clipboards
using the save/load buttons. It is these buttons that most people wanted,
and they perform the functions that users thought the 5 tabs were supposed
to perform.

RE: [LegacyUG] Training CDs

2008-06-07 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Sounds like a fun idea. Well, they're not sold separately, but you might be
able to request individual CDs by calling the 800 number. However, the way
the CD videos were designed is so they build on each other. In other words,
if you wanted to take an all-day seminar on just Legacy, you would begin
with the basics, progress to the next level, and at the end you'll have
everything you need for a strong foundation. So.watching the CDs randomly is
probably okay, but you'll benefit the most by watching them in the order in
which they are listed at

Janice,
Since this is data that will change with each citation, the accessed date is
included as a field on the Citation details screen, rather than on the
Source screen. It shows up correctly within the parentheses in the final
source-citation.

Note: There is a glitch to be aware of. There is no space after the closing
parenthesis and the following text. Adding a space at the start of the next
element of the citation detail will insert a space there, but it will also
insert an unwanted space in the bibliography. I have reported it via this
list a while ago, so hopefully it will be fixed in due course.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Writer

There were some fundamental changes between the two versions. In the 1997

It's my understanding that Source Writer is designed to format source
citations according to "Evidence Explained" -- which I don't have. I
have "Evidence!" from 1997. I didn't think there would be much
difference, but so far there is. Since no one's complained til now, I
figure I must have done something wrong.

Example of a death certificate cite from the 1997 book:

Floyd Finley Shown, death certificate no. 59-0224 (1959), Tennessee
Department of Public Health, Nashville.

Cite with Source Writer:

Tennessee Department of Public Health, death certificate 59-0224 (1959),
Floyd Finley Shown; Tennessee Department of Public Health, Nashville.

I haven't found a source yet that's cited the way I would expect. Is
the 1997 book just plain obsolete? Am I missing something obvious? I
know I can keep doing things the way I was "BS" (before Seven), but I
was really looking forward to using the Source Writer.

I've always been a "splitter" until now, but with the new V7 Source Writer,
I've been manually converting my sources, specifically census.

I've made one Master Source for the 1850 Carroll County Ohio census and
multiple source details for numerous families scattered about in different
towns in Carroll County. In the Detail Text field, I put the all the
Household information from the census.

When I run a Family Group Report that includes source citations with the
same Master Source but totally different details, the source citations at
the end of the report are treated as if they are the same; i.e. the
truncated "subsequent citation" format is used, and the details don't appear
for any citations except the 1st occurrence of the Master.

Does anyone know, if this by design, or a bug?

Thanks much,
Margaret
