[newbie] iBook boot issue Mandrake 9.1

2003-09-02 Thread Jeremy Bell
I recently installed Mandrake 9.1, and everything went fine, though I
was given a message:
hold down command option O F at reboot and enter:
setenv boot-device hd:2,\\:tbxi
Then Type: shut-down

Which I did, yet when the ibook starts up, I get a flashing folder with
the ?. I tried also to reset the PRAM, but that also did not work. I
searched the archives and saw the exact same thing happened to someone
else with the same model iBook, but the problem was not resolved. Also,
I told the installer to erase the entire hard drive. I am using only
Mandrake on the iBook, so the partitions were set to the defaults of
the installer. I had previously attempted to install Gentoo, so those
partitions were still setup, but I had hoped the mandrake installer
would re-partition and reformat the hard drive.

Model: iBook first edition, 300Mhz, original 3GB hard drive.

[newbie] usb cd burner

2002-11-18 Thread Jeremy Seminoff
I can't get my usb cd burner to work (read or write).
It's a Melco-Bufallo J1610U2, and I'm running ML 9.0
on a i586. The crazy thing is that I installed linux
from this cd burner (made a boot floppy to point to
the cdrw) and now I can't access it. When I try, I
get this error message: Unable to enter
file:/mnt/cdrom2. You do not have access rights to
this location. I checked though, and the access
rights are rwx for all users.

Am I missing something really simple?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: [newbie] CD PReparing PLS Help

2001-10-06 Thread Jeremy NG

- Original Message -
I have downloaded the mandrake8.1/i586 from the ftp server,
 it is 942MB,
 one dirctory is 823MB (\mandrake\Rpms)

I need to copy the files to CDs, which should i take and how to distribute
the files between more than one CD

It might be easier to download the ISO images and burn them into CDs.
Mandrake 8.1 comes with 3 images. The seond and third CDs, although nice to
have, are nevertheless recommended as they contain lots of goodies too.

If you don't like the idea of downloading those CD images, perhaps some
other gurus in this list might give some pointers on how to install from the
actual directory tree itself.

Cheers!

[newbie] Broadcast 2000 performance

2001-10-04 Thread Jeremy D

I'm hoping this isn't too off-topic -- the software is
packaged with LM8.0.

I'm currently having trouble getting any decent
performance out of Broadcast 2000 on my T-bird box.
Particularly, I can't seem to get video capture to
work without dropping more frames than are captured.
I know my system (HD speed, proc, mem) are up to it as
I can do it in win. I'd really like to get Bcast to
work as I don't feel like spending $200+ for a real
video editing program like Premiere (I'm currently
managing with a collection of freeware apps).

Here are my system specs:
Athlon T-Bird 1.113Ghz
256MB RAM
30GB HD (~8GB for Linux)
Asus GeForce2MX vid card
Hauppauge WinTV-GO PCI capture card (detected in LM8.0
at install -- Brooktree chipset)
Creative Labs Ensoniq PCI sound card (works fine)

I'm trying to capture at 640x480@30fps -- can do it in
win if my HD's defragged.

'Would appreciate any ideas.

Re: [newbie] Installing Zip drive on 8.0

2001-09-26 Thread Jeremy D

Are you adding the drive to your machine (i.e.
post-install of Mandrake)? My parallel port Zip100
drive was detected during installation (v8.0) -- works
great! I had fewer problems with it than I had with
my floppy drive (permission stuff if I remember
correctly).

All the necessary drivers should be installed when you
set up Mandrake.

[newbie] enabling ATA100 drives

2001-09-07 Thread Jeremy Davidson

I have an IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB drive which is ATA100 compatible, but I
have a feeling that MDK8.0 is not taking full advantage of this feature. My
motherboard, an Asus A7A266, also supports this.

A line showed up during installation (might during boot-up too -- haven't
checked) that says ide bus is assumed to be running at 33Mhz, and it gives
some variable name to use for changing it. Is this what I'm looking for,
and if so, how do I change it? I'd really like to be able to get it working
right -- Broadcast 2000 is having fits with video capture, and I'm
attributing part of the problem to slow disk access. (I've clocked the
drive at 29MB/sec in Win).

Re: [newbie] how to play mov files?

2001-09-02 Thread Jeremy Davidson

Seems to me I once got a mov file to play in Netscape. It didn't have any
playback controls (just a box centered within the working area), but it
worked (don't remember if it had sound or not -- was having soundcard
troubles at the time). This was using the PeanutLinux distro.

Apple don't make a Quicktime player for GNU/Linux. Most Quicktime files are
encoded with the Sorenson codec, which is patented. This means that the free
players (e.g. Xmovie, Xanim and aKtion) are not able to play these files
properly (sometimes you can get a garbled picture or just sound). You can
try
running the Windows player through WINE, or you can purchase CodeWeavers'
CrossOver Plugin (which is built with WINE) for $US20. I actually bought
this
product today, but I haven't used it enough to make a proper decision on its
quality.

[newbie] resizing partitions

2001-08-28 Thread Jeremy Davidson

I've decided to give LM8.0 a try as a dual-boot system (previously I'd been
swapping HDs to keep it separate from win). How much risk is involved in
trying to resize my fat32 partition (using the LM8 install program)? I have
an IBM Deskstar 30GB drive (IDE) on a T-bird system. I've backed up pretty
much everything, but I'd still prefer not to lose anything if I can help it.

If something does happen, I guess it's not a really big deal. I'm planning
on reformatting and reinstalling win anyway -- 'just don't want to do it
now.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

[newbie] tuxracer getting bad framerates

2001-08-24 Thread Jeremy Davidson

I finally got Tuxracer to work -- had to tell RPMDrake (Software Manager?)
to install the mesa packages.

Now, however, it runs at about 1-2 fps. I looked around for a mesa config
program, but I haven't run across anything yet. What do I need to do to get
it working better? I've got a 1.13Ghz Athlon T-Bird system with 256MB RAM
and an Asus AGP videocard (GeForce 2 chipset). I think Mandrake (v8) is
using the generic nVidia GeForce 2 drivers. XWindows is set up to use
1024x768@32bit.

Thanks!

[newbie] Software Manager not really installing

2001-08-22 Thread Jeremy Davidson

Well, I'm back with more questions.

This time I'm trying to install a couple packages off the CD (namely Samba
and Tuxracer). The program appears to run properly, and the KDE menu is
updated with links to the programs. The programs themselves, however, never
seem to really get installed. I checked the /usr/local folder (please
excuse my win9x terminology), and there was no samba folder. Also, I can't
get into SWAT at http://localhost:901 -- it tries to send a request to my
proxy server instead (I have a proxy on another computer for internet
sharing). Tuxracer wouldn't do anything when I tried to run it, either.

The Software Manager shows that the programs have been installed properly --
they get moved to the Installed tree listing. Removing them seems normal
too. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

On a similar note, I tried installing the RPM for Imici Messenger, but it
wouldn't let me. Clicking on the RPM file (imici-0.9.4-1.i386.rpm) gave me
the installer program, but clicking Next brought up an error saying that
the package had already been installed. 'Don't know if there's a connection
here or not -- if not, I have two problems I guess.

I'd appreciate, as always, any thoughts and ideas anybody might have.
Thanks for the support so far!

Jeremy

P.S. While I'm here, could somebody tell me how to check how much drive
space is still free on my hard drive?

[newbie] LILO freezes up on bootup

2001-08-21 Thread Jeremy Davidson

I'm a new Linux-mandrake user (just installed 8.0), but I'm having trouble
getting it to boot up. Whenever I start it up, I get a LI on the screen
(as though it started to say LILO or something) where it used to say things
like Starting Win The computer just stops right there.

I've tried installing three times, and it's the same every time. Once I did
an expert install, during which I chose to create a bootup floppy. The
floppy works fine -- I can boot Linux up and get everything to work. Is
there some way to restore the hard drive boot sector or something?

Here's my computer specs:
Asus Socket7 motherboard with Cyrix 333Mhz chip
24MB RAM (with 1MB stolen for on-board video)
420MB HD (used for Linux install)
384MB HD (hopefully be able to use for extra data)

Thanks for any help anyone might have!

my isp has 3 name servers and I have tried them all and none make a

can anyone make any suggestions with regards as to where I might look to
 find the problem?

I am abit lost as to what to try next,, the only thing that works, is to
put
ALL possible domains in the /etc/hosts file as that works,, but its not my
 idea of fun.

Can anyone give me some suggestions to try?

compile the code via the info provided in one of the links (the heart of
  Linksys).

  The code reads as follows:

  gcc DMODULE D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet Wall
  Wstrict-prototypes O6 c tulip.c `[ -f /usr/include/linux/modversions.h ]
   echo DMODVERSIONS`

Everytime I type in that code above, I get
errors out the yeeng yang. I think it's a matter of not adding a
(spacebar) where needed. I used the archiver program to extract all of
the files found in the tgz file foundon my Linux drivers

   I finally figured out
that the (O6) is actually an uppercase "o". Can some one modify the code
above putting the word (spacebar) where I should be adding a space. And
also note if those are 2 underscores together "D__kernel" or is it supposed to
  be only one.

I am getting everybody about 100 messages, i dont' mind with it. i love to

the person's whom you are replying, mail sometimes is at top or sometimes
at
bottom. sometimes three or four people's are replying.so can not
understand
quickly who has asked and who has replied ? can not everybody decides to
answer and ask quetions in some defined uniform formats, so everybody can

Thanks everybody, if you like suggestions, please come forward and let's

Re: [newbie] Internet access through MS proxy server

2000-12-14 Thread Jeremy Sudderth

Agreeably so, but at the moment I am forced to go through the NT machine. I
got samba up and running without a hitch, in fact my boss was amazed that in
37 minutes I had done a complete install of MD7.2, had it up on the network
and printing through the NT server. Now if I could just get it on the net
they would be sold on Linux forever.

Another small bit of info is that the Linux box does not resolve names or
get an active ping outside of the network.

Thanks,

J

Linux can participate in an NT domain using Samba.

 Must you use socks?

Why not use Linux as a SOCKS, Masq machine? This works quite well and is
 easier to set up.

Are you trying to use MS Proxy from Linux clients?

Yes, The Linux boxes must go through the MS Proxy to gain access to the
 outside world.

If so you have to remember that MS-PROXY uses NT authentication before
enabling Windows machines. I.E. the Windows machines have to login to
the
NT domain/server before they have access to services.

Sounds like that could be the problem, now any idea on how to make NT let
 the Linux boxes login.
I Know NT is afraid of Linux, If I were NT I would be afraid to.

should go to Linux ( Yippee ). The problem is that they are not totally
sure of me yet, which I can understand, so they want a couple of test
machines to try it out on. I have them all setup with samba working. The
problem is the Microsoft Proxy server 2.0 will not let them access the
internet. Any idea why. They can ping the proxy server and even transfer
files to it, but the socks service won't let them connect.

[newbie] ISA ethernet card Tx timeout

2000-11-20 Thread Jeremy Bishop

After moving one of my computers from redhat 5.2 to Mandrake 7.1 I am
having problems with the ethernet card.

As the subject says, it's an ISA card, using the ne2k module. io and irq
are correct, as it detects the card and gives the correct MAC address.
pings to the machine's ip (192.168.1.2) work, pings to and from another
(192.168.1.1) do not work. Before the upgrade it was fully functional.

I've seen some literature saying an older PCI card may have this
problem, and to use the ne.c instead of the ne2k-pci module. So what
should I do if I'm already using the ne.c?

Thanks for any help

[newbie] Can't install NIC's........

2000-08-29 Thread Jeremy Wood

Hi gang,

I just subscribed to this list, and hope that
someone can help. I just installed Linux Mandrake 7.1 Deluxe on a Celeron 333
desktop computer. The install went very smoothly. Unfortunately , the install
didn't 'detect' any of my two NIC's that are installed. I've had no luck finding
any information about how to 'manually' install a NIC, even after searching
hundreds of websites etc. Any info out there usually has to do with installing
drivers AFTER Linux has already detected your NIC initially. i.e when I go to
HardDrake and see a list of my hardware, there is no plus sign next to Network
Interface device etc.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,
since the NIC's are the most important part of me using Linux in the first
place!

Thanks,

Jeremy Wood

p.s Both my NIC's aren't listed in the compatible
hardware list at Linux-mandrake.com, however they both come with Linux
drivers...and colleagues have used them in their machines with Linux without a
hitch.

Hey all...

just another minor trauma here the other day i was trying to
redo my bootmanager (dont like the bootmagic boot prompt and tried to configure
grub with no luck) and decided to go back to the beos bootman (thats the best
one ive seen yet) anyway.when i installed be, i figured i could
install it in the linux swap partition (since id be recreating that partition
as soon as i had the be bootloader working well, got that all taken care
of and am now trying to figure out how i can recreate the linux swap files...
i tried to configure them in drakconf, but am unable and partition
magic insists that i cant create a single 243mb linux swap there.the best i
can do is create 2: a 130mb and a 110mb. could i make do with the
130mb, and just increase my /home partition to "fill in the gaps"?not
having a swapfile at all doesnt seem to be efecting my comuter im just
tired of the "unable to find swap-space signature" when i boot..

any ideas anyone?

[newbie] help! cant get mysqld working

2000-06-17 Thread Jeremy

Hi everyone, I have read the READMEs the FAQs and the excellent
beginners tutorial at
www.devshed.com but I cant get MySQL working.

when I run mysqld as root it gives 'cant change dir to /var/lib/mysql
errcode:2'
and that directory doesnt exist. I have installed all the mysql RPMs off
the Mandrake 7.0
CD except for some of the developer ones.

someone suggested this is because I dont have a database for it to work
with, so I did
mysqladmin create testdb
but that returned

connect to server at '' failed; error: 'Cant connect to local mysql
server (111)'

presumably because the daemon bit wasnt running.

any ideas??

thanks!!

thing is there are 10 instances of httpd taking up over 3M's each. I don't
know what this process is but I can't kill any of them, I get an error when
 I try.

As for the CPU its utilization is down around 10% or so and ktop is what is
 using it.

Unless you are running a web server, you probably want to get rid of
httpd - because that's what it is. You probably have other services
running that you don't need as well after the stock install. For
example, if you just connect to the 'net with a modem and are not on a
LAN you may have some networking services you don't need. But even with
these extra services, it shouldn't be bogging down your system like
that. It may be possible, however, that one of them is acting up
somehow...but thats really just a guess on my part...

I think you said in a previous post that you have 256 megs...that should
be more than enough, and I bet some people here have systems don't have
that much with real memory and swap COMBINED. I doubt your 256 megs is
completely used up except for being used for cache. The K Process
Manager shows a memory usage summary up top in the form of a bar. Black
is memory used, and grays are buffer and cache. I am willing to bet
most is light gray. (Clicking on the bar shows actual numbers)

BTW, my KPM for some reason doesn't show swap usage, or that I even have
swap...maybe yours is the same way - in which case you can see that with
xosview or "swapon -s" as root. If anyone knows why my KPM doesn't show
this with mandrake 7, I'd like to fix that! (It did with 6.0 - is this
a bug with this version of KPM?)

Does your computer boot directly into X? If not, is it slow in
text-mode consoles w/o X running? If it does, try booting into the
console for once. HAve you tried using the basic VGA16 X server? I'm
thinking that maybe the X server could have something to do with it in
your situation.

That abit BE6 board is common among linux users, so I don't think that
should be a problem. I think that board is simular to the BP6 dually
that I've been slobbering over for some time as well.

What other components do you have in your computer? Maybe one of them
or its configuration is causing the problems... I would try using the
basic X server, and then maybe trying to get rid of a few components to
see if you can narrow down the problem. Since nobody else seems to have
helpful advice for you, you are probably starting to get desperate right
about now.

I did have my X get slow once... I had ran Lothar under Drakconf, and it
was bogged down afterwards. I couldn't figure out for the life of me
what was doing it. Quitting X and restarting did not fix, and I think I
may have brought the system to a runlevel 2 then back to 3 without luck
too, but rebooting did bring the performance back. I guess I should have
listened to the warning and closed all other windows before the ISA
scan, but I just like living dangerously I guess ;-)

Just out of curiosity should linux run as smoothly as win98 as far as
opening apps, and moving the app window across the screen or is it
naturally jumpy and something I should get used to.

DEFINATELY NOT - I've always found it to be much smoother!

I hate to see you get the wrong impression of linux from this. (I saw
your other post) My system is a PII300 with 128megs. Currently I have
running: Netscape (afew windows of it), XMMS listening to internet
radio, various terminal windows and file manager windows, KPM, and the
real dog is OFFICE 2000 INSIDE WINDOWS 2000 in a VMWare WINDOW. And my
system is just as responsive as ever. Now, switching back to win2000
will require a load from the swap partition because I haven't touched it
in a while, but hey, I only have 128 megs so that's expected!

I assume you are using W95a on a first generation Pentium here( as you
gave very little info) if this is true you can use your drive...

I just went through this with a 13 Gig WD new hard drive...the only
thing that is limited to 2gig is the fat 16 file system that W95a must
use.I did not want to update to a newer ms windows system, or use
that overlay program that always makes trouble and I did not want to
upgrade flash my Bios in this old p-166

I installed windows 95a as usual and partitioned the rest of the drive
for Linuxit works really well as linux does not use bios calls to
access the disc like w95a does.

the only thing you must do is to put your boot partition below the
1024 cylinder limit so LILO can boot the kernelif you use one 2gig
fat 16 partition for windows and start your linux from there you will
 have no problem with that

my W95 works just as it did on my old two gig drive, but now I have a
full MDK 6.1 helios system with more room than I will ever need...
dual booting with LILO in the MBR...It works great and I have the
 whole 13gigs with no problem.

 you.

If that works for you, you got it easy.

I swear though, that I couldn't do that when I tried it years back. I
know I had to use OnTrack on my old overdriven P60 and old 486. I've
had western digital and seagate drives that came with versions of
ontrack that were limited to only work with that particular drive.

Here's what I remember from using OnTrack: First I had to start it in
manual mode and some sort of bios mode, with command line arguments, and
ignore all the warning messages it gives you. And I had to partition
the drive through OnTrack, which does let you specify the filesystem
types albeit in decimal. I got the listing from linux fdisk and used my
calculator to convert them from hexidecimal. This included ALL linux
partitions, down to the swap. I think I found that the best way to set
up partitions was to put OnTrack in the MBR, a small DOS partition
first, then the linux boot partition, and the rest of linux in an
extended partitions. I installed LILO to boot out of that small linux
boot partition and not the MBR. I told OnTrack to boot the linux boot
partition after it did its thing. Then, you can use LILO to either boot
linux or that DOS partition. Install ontrack in the small dos
partition.

I remember that took me a little trial and error because the docs not
only didn't cover any of this but I think it even specifically said it
wouldn't work for other oses, listing unix as one. And I know I tried
just installing linux right off the bat without luck. I think this was
around RedHat 5 timeframe, and I took an 800mb drive from the P60 and
put it in the 486 when I got a 6gig to put in the P60. It's possible
though that they were both subject to the 500mb limitation and not the
2GB one. I know the 486 is, and I can't remember if I had to install
ontrack for my dad when he first got the 800mb drive for his P60...which
all got passed down to me when it was obsolete ;) I just stole the 6gig
and put it in my PII as /dev/hdb last weekend.

2) list that message length limit now in effect (100k)

3) turn off your !#@$# request for receipts
that's annoying

4) try not to post in html
not everyone's mailreaders support it

Messages from this group didn't reach me from yesterday afternoon to

maybe it has to do with that 2mb attachment.

Anyone else with me on these? Some of us think know this is common

Re: [newbie] Comments on Graphical Installation

2000-03-19 Thread Jeremy

RICHARD FRIEDMAN wrote:

A few days ago I got a copy of the MacMillan version of Mandrake 7.0. I have
a couple of things to say about the new graphical installation.

First, generally, I'm not impressed. I actually found the old installation
method easier to use. The installation of packages seems to be a crapshoot.
I did 3 different installs because each time packages were left out. Each
time, the packages left out were different! Each installation was the same:
customized, development. One time, gcc was completely left out! Another,
kdevelop was omitted. Why would this be happening??

Are you sure you had those packages selected to install? I love the
graphical install, and fiound it easier to navigate then the old redhat
text install. Selecting packages was easier too, once you get the hang
of it. A problem I had at first was pressing the left mouse button on a
catagory to shrink/grow and that would select/unselect all non-required
packages in the tree underneath. After having to go back through the
lists a few times after screwing it up I learned to stop doing that.

Second, at no time during the installation was I able to get X configured
properly. Each time, I had to quit the configuration of X. It would try to
test it and then hang. I would have to CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE to get out of it and
complete the installation. Once the installation was completed, I would then
use XF86Setup to configure X. XF86Setup worked like a champ. It was, and
still is, my favorite method for configuring X.

I don't remember an install that did setup x the way I wanted it, so I
guess I had lower expectations than you. Funny thing is tha in the
install, my exact mouse was listed. In XF86Setup it wasn't. I ended up
using xf86config because it is much better at creating a list of
resolutions and color depths for your display. Then good 'ol vi lets
you tweak everything, including adding the exact mouse driver,
ZAxisMapping, and whatever else.

Third (not really part of the graphical installation but what the heck), I
tried using Lothar to configure sound but it showed a message saying
something like the PnP device is not identified. But then it said something
like the PnP device identifier is CS4235. Anyway, I used sndconfig to
configure it properly. Once again the older method succeeded where the new
 one didn't.

I don't know for sure, but there may be a good reason for the manual
stating that you should run sndconfig to setup sound. I didn't even
know that drakconf and lothar existed for a few days ;-)

I don't know if I'll use lothar again, it brought my X to a
near-screeching halt. Quitting, logging out, and restarting was still
VERY SLW...I ended up rebooting. However it seemed to give my swap
partition a swift kick in the ass by just _looking_ at the settings. It
didn't seem to be working previously to that (even when my memory weas
near-full) KPM still doesn't report swap usage or swap existance, if
anyone has a clue why please let me know. xosview and swapon (-s?) do
report it though,

 Anyway, that's my .02.

Here's mine.

 gone bad

When I installed the 13gig WD it showed as a 2Gig. I just
installed W95a with the PB recovery floppy that fdisk two gig fat
16...as far as the bios was concerned that was a full load...

Then I installed MDK Helios 6.1 using the expert mode which
lets you partition manually with Linux Fdisk.no disc dude or any
of that automatic stuff...I just put hda2 as an extended partition all
the way to the end of the 13 Gigs and started the logicals with boot
first and sectioned them on out, made my swap and native and loaded
 the mandrake.

I did scotch my partition table with a dumb move I will not
expound upon g..as I was trying to partition Linux .and I was locked
out of a brand new unbootable disc, with a 95a system that I had just
put many hours intofortunately I had been looking around with FIPS

Man, I still swear that I couldn't see the whole drive when I tried
that. And I had crossed my fingers that fdisk in linux would see it and
work. But I wasn't so lucky.

Maybe it has to do with the system, and maybe redhat 5.0 didn't have
something that newer madrakes do.

Anyone who's trying to upgrade their antique, by all means try this
first... BUT if it doesn't work you may need to use OnTrack. There are
commercial versions if it didn't come with your drive, and you might
even need to find an older version if they've changed things since. My
previous tips could save you some time and frustration in that case.

Sooo, how long until mandrake ships on a roll of scotch tape? hehehe

What, you don't want to use only 14% of the drive? Neither would I...

Did it come with software (labelled as being for DOS) such as OnTrack?
You do need this and you MAY be able to get it to work with linux.

If your BIOS only supports a 2 gig drive you are SOL unless you have
such a program. I've set up 2 antique computers over the years using
larger than supported hard drives AND linux. And was successful at it

couldn't get it work in Mandrake, I couldn't find the java files that needed to be
there. I was amazed that an "everything but the kitchen sink" installation didn't
include Java.
 :~
:~So, are any of you running Java apps in 7.0? How did you manage it?

[newbie] problems with KDE that came with 7.0 (HELP! please)

2000-03-15 Thread Jeremy

HAs anyone else had problems with the KDE packages that came with 7?

Its seems quite shitty in the stability aspect compared to the LDE in
6.0. I originally started using KDE 'cause gnome was instable back
then... I never had a problem with KDE in 6.0

KFM can no longer go into .tgz's and display contents. It just has a
bunch of folders that don't really exist. I really miss being able to
read a text file inside a .tgz with only a few mouse clicks. Even the
Archiver program sucks for this now too. It'l display the contents of
the archive, but you can't read a file...it just gives an error saying
the file doesn't exist.

aKtion doesn't play all the same movies that the previous version. KPM
doesn't display my swap. Kpackage doesn't prompt for the root passwd
anymore when needed, but this is prob just a security thing and may be
possible to set it up that way still.

* REAL PROBLEM STARTS HERE! *

I've also had serious problems with windows not being able to connect to
the display. I don't think this is the server, 'cause I've tried 3
different ones! The bundled 3.3.6, the bundled 3.3.5 for 3dfx, and the
slightly-newer 3.3.5 on the 3dfx website. I went back to 3.3.6 SVGA
because the server on 3dfx's site was SVGA too...

Left screen locked overnight, came back today to kpanel gone. Started
kpanel in terminal and logged into internet. Tried to start netscape
couldnt connect to display. Trying to open other windows told me KFM
wasn't running. I decided to start keeping track of all this to help
find the problem. I tried starting it at the prompt, as you can see
here:

I had to restart xwindows. I shouldn't be having to do this.

I've had this probelm a few times now, usually when trying to open
netscape. But not always is it netscape that screws everything up. I
hate having to restart x.

WTF is going on here? Is this a KDE thing or what? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP
BECAUSE THIS REALLY SUCKS!!!!

One last gripe:

Why the @#$%$ is the .kderc created by default w/ root ownership in the
user's home directory AND NO WRITE ACCESS FOR THAT RESPECTIVE USER?!?!
Now, I can see that if it were the system-wide one, but come on! It
took a while to figure out why I couldn't change my @#$%@#$% colors!
That was pure stupidity on someone at Mandrake's part...

But don't let that discourage you from linux too much, I think RedHat or
others will work fine. Just remember it's not really a pentium, and you
can't do everything a pentium will.

I have one of those in another box. Here's the deal

This is the fastest 486 chip (That I know of) that was ever made.

Your system bus speed is 33mhz but the chip itself is running 133mhz.

The name is a bit of "slight of hand" from AMD. It was put out when Pentiums
were first coming out. To the uninformed it would look like 586 (Meaning
Pentium). So if this is your chip, no you can't run mandrake. And no, you
can't just "Stick a new chip in" either. To use Mandrake you will need a
whole new system, (Or at least a new motherboard to go with the new
processor). Don't throw this thing away though, it will make a great
 fileserver!

I love my old 486 because:

The one that I hand built and a Compaq Deskpro 2000 sitting side by side.

 Deskpro (Compaq's "Business Solution") =

 Pentium 200
 64 meg ram
 2.1gig Western Dig HD

 Homebrew =
 AMD 5x86 133 (A 486)
 64 meg
 1.08gig

Both running Windows NT Server 4.0 with same services running, the 486 was
faster in everything but drawing the opengl screensaver.

Had I upgraded the graphics card it probably would have kicked butt there too.

xf86config - works truely in text mode
XF867Setup - works outside of x windows, but goes into a low

the second is easier. the first is better for multiple resolutions.

I think I *finally* figured this out. Here's my hypothesis:

Note my 2 different prompts with different machine names... the first
was from a konsole window and the 2nd was from the virtual console. I
had my machine name automatically change when I log onto the 'net (via
kppp). I log onto the net from a x session I start from "localhost",
but then the name changes to "fdialup185". When I then try to open a
window my x server (presumably) sees the request is coming from
something other than localhost and basically says "get the hell out of
here, you can't use that!" I then quit X, and restart it as fdialup85.
It then expects requests from fdialup85 and subsequent requests to open
a window are granted.

The thing is that I don't know (can't remember) if it always failed on
me right away or all the time I guess time will only tell if this
fixes it. I'm interested in hearing any thoughts from anyone in the
meantime, like whether I am making any sense here or am just overtired.
;-) Does anyone else have their machine name change?

This still doesn't explain why kpanel died, or other little things in
kde like the viewing of archives... any ideas there?

Man, it's midnight already, I need to get up early, and I still haven't
ironed clothes for tommorrow.

[newbie] Enlightenment ALT-Fx Problems

this does not work with Mandrake's setup. Any ideas on how to fix

[newbie] Mandrake 7 download

2000-01-15 Thread Jeremy Casey

I am downloading Mandrake 7.0 as a fix for my Rage 128 problem I posted
about earlier. I couldn't find a true .iso image to burn a CD from so I am
downloading the whole file structure from a mirror. Of course there have
been a couple of breaks in the download (even though it is over a DirecPC
dish , it is taking several hours obviously...) and I want to make sure that
I have not missed anything. What is the easiest way to check the directory
that I have downloaded to make sure that I have gotten everything
required... If you say print out a list and start checking I'm gonna cry!!!

Also can I install someway from a windoze partition directly to my Linux
partition (Downloaded files are on C: drive...) or do I need to burn a CD
and make a boot floppy. (Or will the CD be bootable , if not can I make it
bootable???)

Thanks a ton...

P.S. I have read what little info I could find on the Linux-Mandrake site

just hit a brick wall on some basics here...

[newbie] NIC suggestions

1999-12-27 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Season's Greetings!

I'm considering setting up little LAN in my home and, since I'm completely
inexperienced in networking, would like everyone's input regarding which NIC(s)
to choose. I am only in the planning stages and have no NICs or Hub. Here is my
situation:

1 PC dual booting L-M6.0 and Win98
1 PC with Win98

Both PC's have more than 1 of each PCI and ISA slots open. I intend to
use the LAN for sharing files, and maybe the printer on the Win98-only PC if I
can get Linux to do it. I would also like to be able to share the modem (and
therefore Internet connection) in the Dual-booting machine (preferably while its
running Linux). Even though I only have 2 PC's, I want the abillity to easily
expand (although I'm not likely to go beyond 4 systems), so I will be getting a
hub in stead of using a crossover cable.

Here are my questions:

(1)What would be easier to configure in Linux, a PCI or ISA NIC? Remember, I
will be installing a NIC in a machine that previously had none.

(2)Will 10-BASET be enough for me, or shall I aim for a 10/100 network?

(3)Is there any benefit to having identical NICs in all the PC's on a network?

Thanks for any info!
Jeremy

Yes, I'm running as root. I thought that compiling source code was a basic

PC's and have never been able to compile anything.

How shall I fix this?

[newbie] make?

1999-12-17 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Hello,

I left this list a few days ago thinking I'd run out of questions. Silly me...

I'm attempting to install a program that is only avaiable as source code, and
not as a binary.

I've read the file's README and followed it's instructions regarding compiling,
but it doesn't work. I can run the Makefile.PL, but "make" isn't a known
command.

What packages do I need to install so I can compile this program? According to
the readme, it is written in C.

I've already installed these packages from my L-M6.0 CD, and it has not helped:
cproto4.6-3mdk.rpm
cdecl2.5-10mdk.rpm
cpp1.13-3mdk.rpm

Thanks,
Jeremy

Here are the instructions from the README:
---
Become root, open a terminal window, and enter the following:

perl Makefile.PL
make
make test
make install
---

Step 1 works. "perl Makefile.PL" makes a "Makefile".

But Step 2 is "make". This is the instruction that doesn't work. Out of
curiosity, I also tried "Makefile", but it does also nothing.

[newbie] dropped modem connections with Linux

1999-12-12 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Hello,

I'm having what would seem to be a rather strange problem. My modem almost
always disconnects suddenly from my ISP after a few minutes online. The
time varies -- sometimes 20 seconds sometimes 45 minutes. KPPP gives me the
message "pppd died". Here's the strange part: using the same modem in
Windows on the same machine calling the same ISP works fine. The modem is a
USR Sportster 28.8 External.

I do have debug for pppd and kppp enabled, and nothing abnormal shows up in
the log(s). Linux thinks that the modem simply hangs up and sees no errors.

Also, on the rare occasion when the connection in Linux lasts, the
throughput is greatly slower than with Windows. I only average 1.3K down
with Linux and the same setup with Windows get me an average of 2.2K. Then,
too, I have the registry tweaked up in Windows to adjust the MTU, TTL, RWIN,
MSS, and NDI Cachesize. BTW, is there any way to adjust these values in
Linux? I already know how to do the MTU and MRU settings, but what about
the others. (These two alone seem to make little if any difference).

I've already contacted my ISP (who supports Linux) and he says my problem is
likely phone line noise (I live out in the country). This is quite
possible, but then why is Linux so much more picky about it? I have had
occasional disconnects with Windows, but only a fraction of the number as
with Linux.

I am using this initialization string with Linux: ATZ. I do not have a
string specified in Windows.

Is there some remedy for this? Do I need a new modem? or do I give up and
revert to Windows for my surfing and emailing?

Thanks for any suggesions,
Jeremy

Axalon,

In the process of retrieving the necessary messages, I happened to try the
internet logged in as root (which I hadn't tried yet) and it worked fine.
Should have tried this sooner, I guess. But I still get the same problems
when logged in with either of my two user accounts.

So the data below is from attempts from the non-working user account. Of
course, as user, I could not use ifconfig or route to determine their
output. And, since the root account is working properly, I assume that their
output from the root account would be irrelevant, so I have not included it.

How shall I go about getting the user accounts to work like the root one is?

Dennis,

Well, unlike a lot of Linux (relative) newbies, I can guarantee you that it
is not a winmodem. It's a USR Sportster 28.8 EXTERNAL. And I doubt that the
problem is in the modem itself as this modem works with Win9x.

The irq might be wrong, I've been spoiled by PnP in Win and have little experience
in the nuts and bolts of irq's and the like.

How do I tell if I have the wrong irq and, if I do, make it right?

[newbie] MVP3 chipset and L-M 6.0

1999-11-21 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Hello,

I've been happily using L-M 6.0 on a single-boot system for a couple months.
Now I'm in the process of assembling another system from spare parts and
would like to configure it as triple boot setup with 2 installs of Win98
(one for games the other for everything else) and Linux Mandrake 6.0.

Question #1: Can LILO handle the two different installations of Win98, or
will I need a different boot loader?

I have seen in the archives that the kernel will need to be recompiled to
take full advantage of the VIA IDE controller on the MVP3 chipset on my
motherboard. Here is a list of my hardware:

Motherboard: Soyo 5EHM SuperSocket7 with the VIA MVP3 chipset
CPU: AMD K6-2/300 (for a 100 mhz FSB)
RAM: 64MB 72pin EDO (I'll get PC100 DIMMS later!)
Video: Creative Labs Graphics Blaster TNT 16MB AGP
Sound: Creative Labs AWE64
HDD: Maxtor 8.4GB w/UDMA33 and an old IDE Quantum Fireball 1.6GB
CD-ROM: old (but reliable) IDE Toshiba 4X
Modem: External USR Sportster 28.8

Question #2: Are there any other special precautions to take
before/during/after installing Mandrake 6.0 because of this hardware?

Thanks!
Jeremy

Re: [newbie] [getting OT] Reinstalling Win98

1999-10-29 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Perhaps the "afinity" some current and former Windows users have for
reinstalling is more legitimate than you seem to think. My example:

A few months ago I built a brand new PC. All band-name, brand new
components and I proceeded to do a clean install of Win98 (first edition
- build 1998). Well, Win98 ran for 2 weeks. Then one morning it gave
me an invalid page fault in explorer.exe while booting up. After
running scandisk and finding no errors, I had to reinstall because I
repeatedly got the page fault even when attempting to boot into safe
mode. So, I attempted to reinstall, and the setup process locked my
system up (something that didn't happen the first time). That was it --
I'm done with Windows and have installed Linux Mandrake 6.0 and have run
it flawlessly for 2 and a half months on the same hardware.

(1) It wasn't anything I did wrong -- one day the system ran fine and I
shut it down without problems; the next time I booted it, it choked.
(2) No application to be a problem. I didn't install anything new, and
had nothing running at startup but the Windows components.
(3) Hardware problem? Everything was less than 2 weeks old. (And runs
Linux flawlessly)
(4) A problem with the OS? I think so!

Re: [newbie] Modem is busy, but it really isn't

1999-10-09 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Mike,

First of all, I hope your modem has jumpers. If not, I can be of no
help.

I had the same problem with my PnP USR Sportster 33.6. Everybody told
me that isapnp would work, but it didn't. I even did the confusing
setserial stuff everybody told me to do and nothing worked.

My modem has jumpers, so I just jumpered it to the COM # and IRQ instead
of leaving it jumpered as Plug and Play. If yours has jumpers, jumper
it to COM1 and the generic IRQ 3. I don't know how to tell what IRQ to
really use, mine was already set to 3 so I used it and got rid of the
"modem busy" messages immediately. Most likely you can just change the
COM jumper and leave the IRQ jumper alone.

I don't dual boot, so I don't know how this will affect Win95 -- you
might have to remove the modem configuration and let it detect and
reinstall it again as a non-PnP device.

Hope this helps,
Jeremy

[newbie] Backspace doesn't work

1999-10-05 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

I have a small problem that has been bugging me ever since I installed
Mandrake 6.0. I thought I'd get used to it, but i haven't; so somebody
help me fix it!

The problem: the backspace key and delete key have the same function!
It is quite inefficient to have to lift the typing hand and drop down to
the arrow keys to back up to fix typos.

Yes, I have already searched the archives on this and didn't find any
help. It looks like several people have had this problem in the past
and no one has replied -- or at least with worthwhile information.

Thanks for any help,

Re: [newbie] Star Ahhh!-fice

1999-09-29 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

David,

I installed Star Office 5.1 successfully from a CD-ROM yesterday, so
perhaps I can help you out. I installed is as a single user
installation, so if you want a network installation or something else
maybe someone else will help out. First of all are you shure you
downloaded the version for Linux? It could be in a zip file, but I
would have expected a .tar.

Here are your steps:

1. Log in as a regular user (not root)

2. Start X-Windows -- unless it starts automatically. (either the Gnome
or K Desktop environments should work -- I have KDE)

3. OK, you don't need to worry about the "SETUP.BIN", you need a file
simply called "setup". It's a script, as if you needed to know. If the
downloaded files are like the CDROM, it will be in the /linux/office51
directory of the directory where you unzipped the archive.

If you have KDE, try it this way: click the K ButtonDisk
NavigatorHomeThe Directory Where you Unzippedlinuxoffice51 then
press Shift while you click on "Open Folder" at the top of the menu.
This will open a terminal window already in the right directory.

If you don't have KDE, you'll need to use a terminal emulator and cd to
this directory before proceeding.

4. Last step: type "./setup"

That worked for me. Hope it helps you out. I'm a nebiew as well and
didn't do this the first time. KDE locked up with my initial attempt
(clicking on the "setup" file), but the installation only took about 4
minutes when I used these steps.

anything. Now, before the flames roll in, let me just say this. I have

You are still at 640x480 8bpp because you are probably using the vga16
server,
not the XBF_i740 server. To solve this, go to /usr/X11R6/bin and make a
symbolic link to the XBF_i740 file as follows:

cd /usr/X11R6/bin
ln -s XBF_i740 XF86_SVGA

Then run Xconfigurator and select unlisted card, select SVGA server, select
the
proper settings for your monitor, and answer "don't probe" when it appears.
Then you'll be asked for the video ram, my Stealth II G460 has 8mb, you
specify
what's right for your card. After that select "No clockchip", "skip" probe,
and
finally select your desired resolution and color depth. It's recommended
that
you select only the resolution you want to work with, and not the lower
ones.
After that just say "ok" and you're done!

I use the one supplied on the Mandrake 6.0 Cd and it works fine.
There is a readme file in the same directory that tells you exactly how
to
set this up, just make sure you use the instructions for redhat systems

OK, I'm lost. So, do I need to download an install the entire current
version (3.3.5 -- the PCI Starfighter is supposedly supported in it) or can
I just use the i740 server that came on my Mandrake 6.0 CD? It is in a
subdirectory on the CD, but wasn't part of the installed package doesn't
show up on the card list in Xconfigurator.

Either way, can somebody give me some pointers on installing? I'm a
pathetic newbie that can handle RPM's but still need some help with other
installations.

Thanks!

supposed to be inlcluded in the new xfree86 release. ( As a side note, I
have reinstalled so often, I know the Real3d PCI card is #414 during

Also, has anybody tried the i740 X-Server on a Real3d Starfigher PCI?

Re: [newbie] Recoverable disk space

1999-09-15 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Ken,

Thanks for the warning. It has been noted. This isn't my primary system --
so it would be little more than an inconvenience should I wreck it and have
to reinstall everything.

I still have a question. How do I tell exactly what files are in the disk
clusters which I am battling. I see little benefit of playing with a hex
editor when I don't even know what files to open with it. I know they
exist and that they include approximately 2500 disk clusters too close to
the end of my drive, but they could be anything -- Windows Registry, old
temp files, something from software I've previously installed, or maybe even
Windows core components.

I need to be able to find out what files to tinker with before I can open
them in a hex editor. Can I do it, and, if so, how?

Thanks.
Jeremy

Not wanting to seem like I'm talking down to you but I might think you
wouldn't want to be using a hex editor yet if you have to ask what it
 is.

That said, it is a tool, much like a regular text editor, EXCEPT, it
lets you play with the individual bytes as hexadecimal values and
arbitrarily change them to any value you wish. As you can see, doing
this to a simple text file might not be so bad, doing it to an
executable or a specially encoded file could be deadly.

It's located off one of the utilities menus in your desktop. Take a
peak at a file with it if you wish. Play with it if you're brave, but
 don't say you weren't forwarned.

Re: [newbie] Recoverable disk space

1999-09-14 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

Bob,

I've never had a Norton product on this machine. What do you mean by
"running"? Do you mean those programs running on the system all the time,
or all the software on the machine? I hadn't thought of this yet, but it
does make sense that the clusters that the defragger cannot move are those
programs that are running while the defragger is operating.

I only have 4 that are supposed to run all the time (I have disabled 3 of
them with Registry hacks); they include:
MS Office "Findfast" disabled
MS Office "OSA" disabled
Visioneer Paperport "Flatbed" (scanner software autolaunch) disabled
Windows Printing System (Windows95 driver/print manager for Canon printer)
running

I think I'll try killing the Printing System.

Thanks for the tip (still open for more).

 Jeremy

If I recall correctly the files at the end of the disk are put there
by certain programs. I'm not sure but I think it's things like Norton
Commander and similar progs. If anybody can correct me or shed more
 light on this, please do.

What programs are you running? If you can kill these maybe you can
 delete
those pesky files. You can always fire them up again after you get
Linux installed. I've got win95 and I stripped all non-essentials
before I installed Mandrake. The defrag/partitioning went smoothly.
