Re: [newbie] mount/make/windoz-files?
Emilio, You *CAN* write to a VFAT partitoin from within Linux. That's not usually the problem. The major problem normally seem to be that root can write to VFAT partitions, but other "normal" users can't. It's all down to the manner in which you mount your DOS partitions. You need to specify a umask=0 on each partition you want to make writable for everyone. If you want further info then shout up and I'll send you instructions on how to do it. For Russell, wanting to write his error messages and log files to windows partitios, it probably won't be an issue as they'll be written by system tasks running with root permissions anyway. One question I would like to ask is why! Any particular reason why you want them written to a VFAT partition rather than their usual place in /var/log/? There's a place where all man pages should live, but I can't say what it is - I'm at work and have no access. However, I would suspect that installtions which put man pages anywhere other than in this directory are broken! Try 'man man' which will tell you where these pages should live. You can then perform a 'find' on your box to see if any man pages turn up in location other than the usual place and move them! As a side note, this will be the last post form myself to the list - I'll be unsubscribing very shortly as my contract with IBM is finished now. You path variable does not have the current directory in it by default. That is, it will define you path to include /usr/bin:/bin:/home/someguy/bin: etc but it does not include './' which is the current directory. If you can, try 'make xconfig' instead. It's a much nicer interface. As for the preferred-stack-boundy=2 error: This is an unsupported option with the version of gcc suppiled with Mandrake 6.5. Edit /usr/src/linux/Makefile and remove it form the CFLAGS line, and also descend into the scripts directory and edit the Makefile in there to do the same. I certainly had this problem with Mandrake 6.5 and kernel 2.2.13. I must admit that I though it a bit poor to ship a product which won't compile itself without manual intervention! [newbie] People who get LI at bootup rather than LILO BOOT:
This is almost certainly a problem with hard drive geometry. You should open up your PC and look at the label glued onto it, and make a note of the number of cyliners, heads and sectors. If you want a dual-boot machine, and the windows part already works OK, then you don't need to mess with the BIOS. If this is not the case, have a look at the BIOS, and try setting LBA as the hard disk addressing mode. If this still doesn't work, boot linux from a boot floppy, edit /etc/lilo.conf and add this line append = "hd=cyl, hds, sctrs" where cyl is the number of cylinders, hds is the number of heads and sctrs is the number of sectors printed on your disk. Re: [newbie] KFM is all Funked Up
Already posted today, but you may not have seen it Add umask=0 to each entry in your fstab file. Easiest way is to go into linuxconf, select the partition giving trouble. Edit it and find the box marked permissions. Enter zero (0). When you look at your fstab there'll be a umask=0 statement in each partition you've edited. This should now do the trick. As for locking KFM up, whilst you're checking your fstab file, remove the conv=auto line, as Lance suggested Steve Flynn IBM MVS Operations Analyst Adam Stark wrote: Hi, I've been having some problems lately getting read/write permissions for regular users enabled on my DOS partitions. One of you told me that all you have to do is use kfm to navigate to the /mnt directory, look at the properties, and adjust the group permissions to "users".doing this while logged in as root. It didn't work. Now when I try to access that particular partition with kfm the WHOLE system crashes...strange because I thought Linux never did this. The really wierd thing is that ONLY kfm behaves this way. For example, at the command prompt I have no problem accessing it, nor is there a problem with KDE Explorer, or the Disk Navigator. To make a long story short, I tried changing all kinds of permissions in linuxconf -- I even tried renaming the mount points -- in order to correct this problem. I can still access my other DOS partition via any means, it's only the one I fanangled with that's giving me problems. Please help! Adam
Re: [newbie] Linux won't recognize my 96 Mb of RAM...
Ahhh - the thrashing will be down to the fact you are running with Linux under Windows. I can't be of much help here, as I don't use it myself, but I suspect there will be a command you can add to whatever program you use to start your system to define how much memory you have. Linux, by default, only recognises 64 meg. To get it to recognise more, you need to tell it how much you have. Check out the documentation for whatever program you use to start the Linux kernel Steve Flynn IBM MVS Operations Analyst Ryan Drafall [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 24/02/2000 00:59:27 UhhhI don't have a lilo.conf anywhere on my system. Re: [newbie] unsubscribe requests.
One answer which should kill /most/ of the unsub requests is a procmail filter at the server which catches requests with unsubscribe in the title, zaps the posting and sends back instructions (or even sends the correct unsubscribe request to sympa). Obviously, it won't kill ALL requests but it should cut the number down with no human intervention. If all the "I want to be here" users agree to not use the "unsubscribe" word in their posts., then we could extend the filter to catch that word /anywhere/ in the message. I was also thinking about "Yet Another Mailing List", where people could post nicely formated "questions answers" found in the lists. We could call such questions "RAQ" or "RFAQ" (R for Recent). (I NEED FEEDBACK ON THIS!) Sounds like a reasonable idea. What format were you considering for the formatting of the questions? HTML or something which could be piped through nroff and the likes plain text might be the most easily accessible. DOCBOOK perhaps? Re: [newbie] newest version of mandrake or redhat...
I think winmodem supportis due sometime in 2.3.40+ kernels. I may be wrong - something is ringing a bell in the back of my head *.tar.gz is a gzipped tape archive. Basically, just like a zip, arj, rar, lha, lzh, etc. file in Windows or other OS's First thing is to unpack them to somewhere. I always 'gunzip' the gz file and then 'tar -xvf' the resulting tar file but you can pipe the commands together the tell tar to do the unzipping for you. It depends upno your habits. Next thing - READ THE README FILE. This will virtually ALWAYS tell you how to build and install the package. I'd strongly suggest looking at the manual for 'make' and spending some time reading about 'makefile's. Once you know what the makefile is trying to do, you can then pretty much work out what you need to do to install the thing! I ALWAYS perform a make -n target to see exactly what the make file will do - the -n switch tells make to not actually issue any commands, but to echo what it WOULD have issued to the screen. That way you can see where files are going to be copied to before they actually get copied there for real! The most important thing though, is to ALWAYS READ THE DOCUMENTION OR README. 99% of the time, it'll always tell you what you should do. How many times have you ran an install-shield package in windows and not had a clue aobut what was being placed where and why! With Linux, you get the decision of where files will go, who can use them, etc, and if you have the source code, you can see what they are going to do when you run them! RE: [newbie] updating mdk 7 - blue sc
Sounds like a specific problem in upgrading from 6.0 to 7.0, especially seeing as the hang always occurs at the same place in the install. As for not losing any data. if you can boot the system as it is, you can always move any of your files over to one of the other partitions, or even back over onto a Windows partition if you still have any. This is one of the reasons why I have a seperate partition for /home. I can re-install the OS as often as I like and it's fairly trivial to reconfigure stuff. I'm afraid that a full re-install will tash anything you have under your / partition. Anyone else in here performed an upgrade to 7.0 rather than a full install. Denis (or anyone from Mandrake) - have you had any reports of the upgrade process hanging like this - I would have thought tha the installation merely copies files over the top of existing stuff, or does it do hardware detection on an upgrade as it does on a full install? I can't see why installing a particular library would cause this kind of problem though - If you can boot the system, bring it up in single user mode (rather than entering linux or whatever at the LILO BOOT: prompt, enter 'linux 1' When you get to the console prompt, try running fsck on all of your partitions to make sure they are all free from errors. You could also try uninstalling the GNU C libraries with rpm and then re-attempting the installation I suspect you have something screwed on your drive - bad blocks. Re: [newbie] Can Separate Partitions Interfere?
Do you mount any of the other partitions under any of the installations. For example, do you mount your debian / when you fire up Mandrake? If so, then this would indeed cause you no end of grief. What could be happening is that your System.map compiled for debian kernel (say 2.2.6) is being used with your mandrake kernel (which might be 2.2.13). The System.map and the kernel versions have to match. Ensure that NO OTHER partitions containing other installations are visible to any other installations. Re: [newbie] Thank you, Corel, for PPP
Which version of Mandrake Linux did you install? I know 6.5 installs both a normal Kernel, an SMP kernel and a Frame-buffer kernel on my system and /all/ of them come with ppp support installed into the kernels. Then again, it's a reasonably trivial matter of recompiling the kernel with ppp support to get what you want - that's the power of Linux! No need for IRda but need ISDN, easy - recompile the kernel with thos options set the way you want it! Re: [newbie] Slow Hard drive
Define "long time"! :) Have a look at the 'hdparam' command. It'll allow you to change specific parameters for your drives but it'll also allow you to test the seek time, latency and transfer rates. Compare them with a UDMA/33 drive (I'll post mine if you like) and again with a non-UDMA drives and see if the difference is appreciable. Remeber, UDMA/66 will only give you something like a 20% increase - not the 100% it implies. RE: [newbie] Load lilo with rescue disks
This may help: From the KERNEL-HOWTO. The directory paths are not exactly the same as Mandrake installations, so you may need to mess about a little. Also, sounds like you already have a boot disk so you can skip all of that. If you can't get things fired up from this, then post the exact error messages you get when you try to run /sbin/lilo. Ooops! The best thing you can do here is to boot off of a floppy disk or CDROM and prepare another bootable floppy (such as `make zdisk' would do). You need to know where your root (/) filesystem is and what type it is (e.g. second extended, minix). In the example below, you also need to know what filesystem your /usr/src/linux source tree is on, its type, and where it is normally mounted. In the following example, / is /dev/hda1, and the filesystem which holds /usr/src/linux is /dev/hda3, normally mounted at /usr. Both are second extended filesystems. The working kernel image in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot is called bzImage. The idea is that if there is a functioning bzImage, it is possible to use that for the new floppy. Another alternative, which may or may not work better (it depends on the particular method in which you messed up your system) is discussed after the example. First, boot from a boot/root disk combo or rescue disk, and mount the filesystem which contains the working kernel image: mkdir /mnt mount -t ext2 /dev/hda3 /mnt If mkdir tells you that the directory already exists, just ignore it. Now, cd to the place where the working kernel image was. Note that /mnt + /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot - /usr = /mnt/src/linux/arch/i386/boot Place a formatted disk in drive ``A:'' (not your boot or root disk!), dump the image to the disk, and configure it for your root filesystem: cd /mnt/src/linux/arch/i386/boot dd if=bzImage of=/dev/fd0 rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hda1 cd to / and unmount the normal /usr filesystem: cd / umount /mnt You should now be able to reboot your system as normal from this floppy. Don't forget to run lilo (or whatever it was that you did wrong) after the reboot! As mentioned above, there is another common alternative. If you happened to have a working kernel image in / (/vmlinuz for example), you can use that for a boot disk. Supposing all of the above conditions, and that my kernel image is /vmlinuz, just make these alterations to the example above: change /dev/hda3 to /dev/hda1 (the / filesystem), /mnt/src/linux to /mnt, and if=bzImage to if=vmlinuz. The note explaining how to derive /mnt/src/linux may be ignored. DOH! I think I've replied to a list mesasge and sent it to you by accident or something! Maybe you might nied to do something similar when you mount your burner - after all, I guess you can burn to it as root, but not as "normal" user. I do recall someone who sounded knowledable (Denis?) on Friday saying burning should always be done by root anyway, to ensure underruns don't occur (or something!). However, at the moment, I can mount DOS partitions but only root can write to them. You can mount your burner but only root can write to it yeah? astonishing new DrakConf, the all-graphical Drake Configuration tool, which handles every major (and many minor) configurations graphically and with outstanding functionality and sense of beautity and grace. My (blue) hat is off to Mandrake 7.0! So, you're saying it look nice! :) You post got me thinking - back in the good old days of Amiga's several collections of themed icons cropped up, the most notable being "Magic Workbench". Essentially, it was a pre-defined palette of 16 colours or so, and one guy drew a bucket load of icons all in the same style. By using this specific palette you could pretty much be assured that the icons would blend in with the desktop and look about a million times better than the default icons. Another package was called "NewIcons" and essentially was the same thing, but with a different palette. MWB as it was known used a mainly grey palette with some subtle oranges, NewIcons was a lot more brightly coloured. All in all, it transformed the look of the desktop just by making things "harmonious". Now, do we have anything like this for Linux? A collection of "themed" icons to go with particular desk-top themes? I know there's themes.org but is there anywhere for really cool icons? Anyone got any good stuff they've done themselves? Re: [newbie] Mandrake failing to recognize all my RAM
Did you run /sbin/lilo again (as root after making the changes)? If not, you'd get this symptom. LILO doesn't read this config file when it at boot-time. I can't, the config file is on a partition it can't see yet (Linux hasn't started at this point). What happens is you rerun /sbin/lilo and the config file is read - the options, like your append line, get written to the mbr where lilo CAN read them (the technical details are probably different but this is the gist of it!) Therefore, you make you changes to the config file, run /sbin/lilo and then try booting Linux back-up. You should find all 256 meg is now available. BTW, you can also just enter LILO BOOT: linux mem=256M insetad of just LILO BOOT: linux when you are firing up Trust me - this WILL work! Re: [[newbie] Can anyone recommend a good email program?]
Because HTML was never designed to be used in email. It bloats the size of the email message and takes up bandwidth for non-essential data. I guess it comes from using the internet and Fidonet many moons ago, when 2400 baud modems were speed-demons and 300/300 or even 1200/75 was more like the norm. Anything you could do to squeeze the last few cps out of a modem and keep the connection costs to a minimum was "a good thing". Over here in the UK, every connected phone call costs me cold hard cash. I don't have the luxury of a DSL modem or even a cable link. Local phone-calls cost me as soon as they connect. HTML is not neccessary for email. I can strip it out of the email after I've downloaded it, but by then it's too late - I've already paid to download it! When communicate with someone via email I want to be able to type in some text, and have it delivered. Ideally, the manner in which the message is rendered to the other party should be dependant upon /their/ browser. For example, I want the word 'their' in that previous sentence to be rendered to you in italics. I merely make a suggestion to the other parties email package that I'd like to draw emphasis to that particular word. Here, it displays as a slash, the word their and another slash. Anyone who was on Fidonet and has used packages like Spot, April, Foozle, etc. will realise what I mean! I don't want my email package to display "VIAGRA AVAILABLE HERE" in 48 point Verdana, blue background and red flashing letters because someone encases the thing in HTML. Ideally, I'd like it to be displayed in a montoype font, my usual 10 point size, no colours and no special effects! It's my choice! (Actually, I'd prefer it if the spam wasn't displayed at all!) HTML is absolutely great for web pages. Leave it there. I'm not even going to go down the embedded javascript (and the security implications that brings), gif and jpg attachments, attached midi files that start playing, etc. etc. etc. The only beneficial thing you can get from an email is the ability to click on a link, fire up the web page and browse straight to it. Of course, I'm not stupid and I can cut and paste the link just as easily. In fact, my usual email package allows me to hit PF7 and all links are stripped from the mesasge onscreen and placed into a seperate section of my bookmarks folder. Of course, I'm not mentioning that nearly every email package I've seen which send html email always (at least) doubles the size of the message by sending a plain text version and then sending the html'ised version immediately after it. Don't use 7.0 myself You processors are not being detected because you need to use a different Kernel with SMP support switched on. By default, the installation comes up with a single processor kernel. Have a look in /boot Do you have an kernel in there with -smp- in the title? If so, it's the SMP version. Re: [newbie] random 'find' process
The cron daemon. man cron man at man atq man anacron Have a look at your crontab file - it controls what starts up, how often and at what time. It's a scheduler running constantly. In your case, it may have been cleaning your /tmp directry, rebuilding your RPM database or several other things. For example, ever month, on the 1st day, at 0300 hours, my machine goes through the entire machine, moving any files which end in ~ (normally backup files from kedit) into a backup directory. On the 14th of the month, it empies this backup directory. Cron controls the running of these scripts. Re: [newbie] Unsubscribe
Sigh.. Seriously, this is a great list - very helpful. I've only been subscribed for a few days and was suprised at the signal to noise ratio. However, and it seems to be the same on many lists, many people throw away the introdutory message they get when the subscribe. I don't know if the problem of unsub requests to the list has gotten worse then usual recently, but I've been mailing people privately for the last two days sending them the unsub reqs. We'll see if it dies down. The one thing I can't understad is that this is a really easy list to get on - you go to the mandrake webpage and fill in an online form, click subscribe and that's it. Now, if people can find the subscribe button easily enough why can't they find the unsubscribe button right beside it! Re: [newbie] Can anyone recommend a good email program?
Eh! Nah! Lovely programs. Actually, I say this never having used ELM or PINE on my installation. I've used them both before under other flavours but never under Mandrake. Saying that, I used to use ELM as my email package on my Amiga 3000 alongside TIN for news. Being connected via a modem in the UK meant I was offline 99 percent of the time. I found them to both work beautifully. I fact, I used to use TIN to gate newsgroups from Usenet across in Fidonet. Worked beautifully. Not the most friendly of packages, I'll freely admit, nor are either of them 'pretty' (well, they weren't when I was using them about 3 years ago!) I do appreciate the nicities of a GIU interface though - using Win98 for the last two years as made me lazy. "What? You mean I can't just click on install? [newbie] Permissions to /mnt
Someone else on the list is attempting to dothe same thing as myself. Basically, root has the ability to write files back to my DOS partitions, whereas 'steve', my normal user does not. This is very incovenient as it means I have to run my distributed.net client under root to allow it to write back to the buff-out file (located in /mnt/D/Utilities/distributed.net/). I'd like to do two things: Give 'steve' permission to write to this drectory. My attempts at chmod'ing permisions to rwxrwxrwx as root have failed - no change in permissions. Run dnetc (the distributed.net client) from the user 'steve' and have it run with root permisssions. I've chown'd it to root, I've performed a 'chmod +s dnetc' and I've changed the owner of the directory it live in to root. No joy - it still runs with 'steve' permissions. The only way I can get it to run with root's permissions is to su to root and then fire it up. I'm missing something obvious out, and I can't for the life of me, see it! To make it automatic, edit /etc/lilo.conf and add the line append="mem=128M" to each stanza you use to boot linux. Enjoy the extra memory.... Right - I must have sent the following message to about 20 peope *today* all trying to unsubscribe. To unsubscribe send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put in the subject : unsubscribe newbie. or go to the web page and unsubscribe via the web interface. If you are still on the list and want to get off it, then you can't just send messages to it screaming to be unsubscribed. You're sending email to all of the rest of us - not the list administrator! When you signed up, you received an email with the following instructions in it - I presume you all just charged ahead, deleted it and expected magic to happen when you want to unsubscribe. Magic only happens in the kernel - something which you people are unlikely to ever come to grips with because you can't read and follow simple intructions. Christ - you pop onto this list, whine that Linux sucks because it doesn't support your electron microscope controller interface, nor does it magically configure every piece of hardware in your house, including your VCR, and expect someone to wipe your arses for you when you want to unsub. Unix is complicated. It's very powerful and there's lots of it. If you fail to follow intsructions to unsubscribe yourself from the list, then you have absolutely NO hope of ever getting it to work "just the way you want it". Right - now that rant's over, I'll apologise to the others in here, and especially to Jacob Bondre - this isn't directed to you in particular, you just happened to be the person I replied to when composing this message. No offence intended to yourself. PEOPLE WHO WANT TO UNSUBSCRIBE - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE TOP OF THIS MESSAGE AND FOLLOW THEM. SENDING 'UNSUBSCRIBE', EVEN WHEN YOU MANAGE TO SPELL IT CORRECTLY, TO [EMAIL PROTECTED] WILL NOT WORK! GET THAT? IT WON'T WORK. WORK IT WILL NOT. IT WILL HAVE NO EFFECT. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. YOU WILL NOT BE UNSUBSCRIBED. UNDERSTAND? YOU NEED TO SEND A MESSAGE TO [EMAIL PROTECTED] WITH A SUBJECT OF UNSUBSCRIBE. A SUBJECT OF "UNSUBSCRIBE" NOT A SUBJECT OF "UNSUSCRIBE", 3 COPIES OF "UNSUBSCRIBE" IN THE TEXT PART OF THE EMAIL OR ANY OTHER VARIATION IN SPELLING, POSITION, FONT, LANGUAGE,TYPEFACE OR ANY OTHER COMBINATION YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO COME UP WITH. IF YOU STILL CAN'T WORK IT OUT, YOU REALLY ARE ON THE WRONG MAILING-LIST AREN'T YOU.. Now, have we all got that clear? Re: [newbie] Dual Boot with LiLo and other stuff
Sorry if this is a little late - I've just read this request. About Linux only seeing the first 64 meg of memory: If you're using LILO to boot Linux, then start it with LILO: linux mem=128M You should see the 128 meg reported on your login screen. If you're going straight to runlevel 5 (Start X automatically) you'll have to be quick to spot it. Anyway, once you're in, you can call 'top' from a shell and it'll tell you how much memory you've got. There's probably a cat /proc/memory' or similar to get the same information. Now, to make this changes permanent, and automatic, you can now edit /etc/lilo.conf and add the line append="mem=128M" to each stanza it's applicable to. You can specify any value for the amount of memory, but it's best to stick to what you've got. Also, it might also be a good idea to only declare 127 meg to Linux, as you might not be able to use the full 128 meg for software - I was reading a HOW-TO last night about this very topic and I believe it's possible that the upper part of memory may get used by some BIOS'es to store stuff, video cards, sound cards, etc. etc. It'll probably be OK though the HOW-TO was quite old and may be somewhat obsolete....
