Re: [CGUYS] dual core vs quad core processors
i bought an ACER 5100 with an AMD quad-core. was under $600 delivered, with most everything on it. came with good set of bells and whistles and an acceptable video card.. have little use for the quad core, or the speed, but at that price, it is difficult to buy much of anything for much less. we have only owned 4 or 5 ACERS, but have had good luck with them as an econobox. the hardest part of setting the thing up is getting rid of all the free crap. I don't play games or do any video or photoshop stuff. I will be replacing a 3 year old Dell OptiPlex 620 that has a 3.60 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4, Windows XP and 2gb RAM. Earlier this year I bought a Dell Optiplex 755 with a 3.00 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo (e8400 I think), Windows XP, 2gb RAM. Comparing the two computers the Optiplex 755 with Core2 Duo is noticably faster thank Pentium 4 when running several applications at the same time - part of what I thought benefited the most from multi core processors. Now I see all sorts of options for multi core processors. Will a quad core processor likely make that much difference for me? Re: [CGUYS] what router?
i did not know komkast had modem/routers. if you get one, make certain it is komkastick approved. i bought one a few years that was not approved. since people are very unhappy with comcast and switching to fios(we did it for cost -$50 a month), there should be tons of modems on ebay. N routers are super fast.(i think). i bought one for my wife to connect to her big MAC. the N she got does not want to change IP address, and conflicts with something else, so she runs next slower(G?) and it is plenty fast for her. she uses the modem/router from FIOS. Last weekend I went shopping for a GPS and tried one out in Circuit City. I was in southern Maryland (Waldorf) and picked out an address in Annapolis. It generated a route that took US 301 to US 3 to MD 450 to the final destination. This is at least 6 miles longer than taking US 301 to US 50, which is a little longer than US 301 to MD 214 (MD 450 is a two lane road, US 50 is 4 lanes and goes across the Bay Bridge). The other GPS receivers didn't seem to get a signal, there didn't seem to be a lot of sales help there, so I left. you may want to back up to something that is 99.9% pure. that is not a single HD, and it is not using MS software. failure rates on hd's are much higher than the 0.001% per year claimed and MS software does not transfer from one os to another. a lot of fragments of the information i want have been overwritten years ago. if you do those daily, weekly, monthly backups, that information is gone. Re: [CGUYS] Out of sync

Most stations already have this but use it for other things. Richard P. Leitch Technology has introduced the X75 HD, a versatile up-, down- and cross converter and HD frame synchronizer. The X75 HD features extensive video and audio processing capabilities in a 1RU package. Video processing features include level/color control; optional 3-D adaptive color decoding with time base correction; optional noise reduction; frame synchronization; and up- and down-conversion with aspect ratio conversion for hybrid standard - and HD facilities. The X75 HD's 16 channels of internal audio processing include timing with video for lip sync corrections; level control; analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion; and embedding and de-embedding for SDI and HD-SDI serial digital signals for interfacing any audio signal in a professional environment. FYI, there's a simple piece of commercial equipment in use today to adjust for lip sync errors. All it requires is someone to input the signal into it, adjust it, and then monitor the output. Master control at the final broadcast point could do this if directed to. That would take care the simple stuff like a live program. The networks do this all the time when their anchors are on remotes. It just takes someone to make that decision to do it and an operator that cares enough to monitor it. I am sure you are correct. Heck, even my component DVD player has a means of correcting for audio sync in some instances. Surely these mega-million dollar digital TV transmission facilities can do the same thing. rasmus.com has the 5 minute extension. but while at it, why not complain about the minimum next allowable bid being to large or small. in most online auctions that i have seen, the next allowable minimum bid gets larger as the price goes up. in most live auctions i have attended for real estate, automobiles, and antiques, the size of the increment is reduced as the price goes up. i have seen the auctioneer refuse to take a higher bid that has been reduced too much. Re: [CGUYS] eSnipe failure. need replacement
tom, i have been to many an auction where bidding fever takes over. if he is willing to pay at least one million dollars(lets be serious), i decide i am willing to pay 1mil,10and 20 and thirty, etc clear up to two million, because did not someone else think the item worth that much. if you look at bid histories, you will see many cases where some person(usually with a rating of 2 or 4 or 0) bids 10 times in the last two minutes. this is called auction fever. it can be complete avoided if one puts in a bid with 6 seconds left. i first realized the existence of auction fever probably before you were born. i sat next to a friend(a major antiques dealer) at an antiques auction at thieves market in 1962. she sat there and kept saying should i, should i. she kept bidding until it hurt. that was when i realized the value of jump bids. there is also value with the eSnipe because then i keep those idiots out. i know what i am willing to pay, but there is a very good chance that the other guy would never be willing to spend my price plus that extra 20-30 thousand, other than the fact that i bid the first mil. regards jer At 01:57 PM 8/24/2008, you wrote: Handy not always necessary but can make the difference between getting what you want at the price level you want and having to sit there and monitor an auction all day long. Thus if the auction's increment is $1, you bid $60, and the second highest bidder bids $50, you win for $51. This happens automatically and very quickly, since it is built into the eBay program. i loaded itunes and do like it. it took all my mp3 files and converted them to itune format. i got my new acer econobox, and loaded everything i could. the folder with the mp3 files transfered, as did the file with the itune format files. itunes.exe did not transfer in an executable form, so i reloaded it. after it loaded, it went searching for files to convert. it found all the mp3 files and converted them. it did not overwrite the old itunes files, so i now have some 800 tunes, and some 800 dupes. is there an easy way to clean the dupes? i can see them, but do not want to go in and delete each one individually. i could wipe out the itunes music library, and then convert the mp3's again, i guess. i had added a few tunes to itunes, and would prefer not to go that way. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] installing itunes or firefox ... which one should I do?
i use foxpro 3 as a browser. have been using those products since ver 0.XXX days. like it a lot better than explorer, but am used to it. i loaded earlier iTunes, and thought it sucked. my wife convinced me to load the latest version of iTunes. safari did not load onto my pc. the latest version of iTunes is very nice, once you get rid of the apple push to sell tunes. even bot an iPod to use with the iTunes. very nicely integrated package. best stuff to come out of apple since excel. foxpro and iTunes do not conflict with anything on my pc with xp. [CGUYS] Ebay Scams..how do they do that?
I do not understand how the listing part of the scam works. An item is offered for BUY IT NOW price of say $5000. item trades at say $7-8000. item is sitting at bid price of couple hundred dollars. not many bidders. the seller seems completely legal. has 98-100% favorable rating, 100-200 responses to generate listing. responses exist. prior items sold exist. if one bids say $1000, the bid disappears after a short time, and the couple hundred dollar bid reappears. how do they hack the website to do that. i have found these guys on golf carts, ATV's, heavy equipment, high end stereo and the like Ebay does find them, and does delete them, but usually not for 3 or 4 days. no parsimonious lectures on not buying on ebay, or one gets what one pays for, etc, please. i have purchased thousands of items on ebay, and was last burned in 2000 or 2002. regards jer * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

some dlp units require factory replacement of the bulb. others are a do it your self. the do it yourself cost is around $1-200. bulb life is frequently only 2-3000hrs. 1000 hrs is 6 weeks. you turn your tv on first thing in the morning and turn it off when go to bed, the bulb lasts less than 6 months. i listen to music choice on mine. the screen is on. i have my accounts and my wife's accounts with etrade. i get in with password and rsa time code device. i can get into mine, or my wife's account, but not both at once. since the passcode for her account seems to be about twenty digits or so, it is a real pain to log out and log back in. what is a reasonable workaround? if i partition the hd(i have plenty of room) and put one account on each never mind put one in mozilla and one in ms ie. they don't see each other. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
[CGUYS] 6% md tax
the wall street journal weighs in: High Tech Tax March 15, 2008; Page A10 In the cinematic classic, Revenge of the Nerds, a group of college outcasts fights back against the local campus bigshots to regain their place in the world. A real-life sequel is playing out in Maryland, where a new tax on computer services has business groups, techies and legislators rallying around the pocket-protector set. [Martin O'Malley] Under a bill passed in November, such tech services as Web design, computer repair and programming would all get hit with a 6% tax statewide. If the tax isn't repealed before it takes effect in July, it would be one of the most burdensome regimes in the nation on the growing industry. On Thursday, Governor Martin O'Malley, a Democrat who originally balked at repealing the tax, joined the chorus against it. The state's technology sector is critical, he said, and not an advantage we want to weigh down. Proponents say the $200 million in revenue the tax is projected to garner is indispensable when Maryland is already facing a budget shortfall. Senate President Mike Miller insists that We can't afford to cede to businesses $200 million in revenue without an alternative. Wait until they see what happens to revenue when business begins to leave the state. Many Maryland companies and small businesses say they could be forced to relocate if the tax isn't repealed. And nearby states are courting potential departees: 70 Maryland computer services firms got a letter last month from Delaware economic director Judy McKinney-Cherry to encourage companies to include Delaware when you are contemplating an expansion. Other states have tried similar tax experiments -- with dismal results. In Pennsylvania, a 6% computer services tax was repealed after it handicapped the state's ability to compete with other states for business. Ditto Connecticut, which enacted a 6% computer consulting tax in the late 1980s, only to walk it back in 1997 as the importance of the computer industry became apparent, and business associations revolted. The Tax Foundation ranks Maryland 24th among the 50 states in overall tax burden after a big individual income tax hike last year, but it is still seventh best in corporate taxes. The new tech levy won't help that reputation and in particular will hit the small businesses that drive its economy. While larger companies may simply move their IT operations to other states, small businesses will lose money on tighter margins, or watch clients bring their IT services in-house. Maryland legislators won't control their spending habits, so they keep imposing tax increases that give more people an incentive to leave the state. That's the real revenge of the nerds. in case you are not famaliar with the journal, there has never been a tax that they do not hate. . this editorial is full of holes. taxes on md services to maryland entities would apply to in and out of state companies. there should be no tax on services performed in maryland for non maryland companies. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

i think the best known fund that tracks that is the Vangard index 500 fund. i think it is the sp 500 marketbasket, less about a half % annually for expenses. since '76, shows 11.6% annual return. 10 year, however, shows only 3.99% return. i do not recall exact numbers, but only a modest percentage (10%) of mutual funds beat the dow or the sp500. probably better than passbook, and more stable than common stock funds are AAA rated preferred stocks. one can purchase one's own stocks for $10 for a purchase of 10k, 100k, or 1m. the problem with all individual purchases is: 1. the bid-asked system of purchase. small investors get the short end of the stick 2. information chain. the big guys know more, and get there firstist with the mostest. 3. the small guy advantage, small positions are taken. the big guy has to buy/sell 10+m for a position. this affects the market. or buy berkshire hathaway, and live on buffett smarts At 09:23 AM 3/11/2008, you wrote: For tracking investments, a spreadsheet and a web query would be as simple and straight forward a tool for your needs that there is. Re: [CGUYS] LCD TVs
this is where most of the avs geeks live: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/index.php if it don't say hd, it ain't. besides that, I think 720i(integrated) qualifies as hd. then there is 720p and 1080i p. integrated means the gun paints every other line, then goes back and paints the in betweens. p(forgot what it'scalled) throws all 720 or 1080 down each pass. i think almost all of them now come with the ability to receive and play HD broadcasts, but do not presume. I think most broadcasts and cable is 720, not 1080. bluray is 1080, i think. my wife's new camcorder is 1080. now adays, 1080p is readily available and not for much extra. samsung(and maybe others by now sell a dlp led. it is not thin. not too thick. has better contrast and brightness than an lcd. lot cheaper also. I think the buy.com deals on samsung probably come direct from samsung. you can go to bestbuy or circuitcity to see and compare the various units. I see that this week's special on samsung is $1150 delivered for the 56. or the 61 with a stand is 1629 delivered. that is a deal also, if you need a stand. will have new specials in a week or so. for the long of it, go to wikipedia.org At 11:21 AM 3/4/2008, you wrote: trying to sort out the new (to me) TV definitions/specs etc. are all LCD high def? Re: [CGUYS] LCD TV
the $100 dvd upconverter boxes are amazing. the tech GuRu at the WSJ said he could not tell the difference between regular dvd up converted(to 1080p), and bluray. from comcast, you have to rent the box and pay for hd content. I am not certain but what you do not have to pay extra to get channels 200 to 275, which is where most of the hd content is placed. channel 3-26 frequently are not hd, but the same program is on 200-275 in hd. not a lot is in hd. to get hd on sports, frequently they have to run at about 5 frames per second as they do not have enough light. bonkiety bonkiety bonk. stop motion. most of the TV hd is in 1 or 2.0 sound.(one source or 2). even rock concerts are single channel, or stereo at best. the best productions that I have seen on a regular basis is NASCAR, it's worth watching nascar to see what can be done. they have cameras everywhere except the rest rooms. from cars fwd, backward, and on the rite hand side of the car, photoing the driver. there must be at least 50 active cameras. they broadcast in 5.1(2 main, 2 side, i center, and wulfer). if you can suck in the channels with an antenna, you can get hd for free. the upconvert of standard to hd on my samsung sucks(for lack of a better word) At 01:58 PM 3/4/2008, you wrote: This is where I ran into a problem with a very poor picture. If you supply your HD LCD TV with a standard non HD signal the tuner inside has to up-convert to the native resolution of the TV(720p,1080i,1080p). Better tuners do a better job of up-converting, but I have yet to find a source that will tell me who is using high quality tuners to do this. This all started at Christmas, I was going to replace my wifes trusty 13inch CRT with a space saving 19 LCD($400 from Toshiba), Christmas morning with baited breath I anxiously hooked up. But to my dismay the picture was fuzzy. I tried it on Comcast's digital tuner box, but then realized that the output was Analog Channel 3(to get a digital signal I will have to pay more per month for the better box that outputs a digital signal.) Isn't it wonderful that the government is pushing this High Def junk forgetting about all of the old TV's out there. Very disheartened I returned it to Circuit City, and have been looking ever since for a non HD LCD set of a 19 size that will work and be relatively inexpensive. I am thinking of getting the Samsung 19 720P LCD HDTV(~$400), but am unsure if it will give good results with a non Highdef signal. Any advice would be appreciated. Mike Tom Piwowar wrote: should i be confused? YES! The DTV Shoppers Guide page at dtv.gov will give you a start at sorting things out. The formatting is terrible, but someone did a lot of work to pull facts together. It does leave out some important details. Like... A progressive image is about 30% sharper than an interlaced image of the same resolution. Nobody is broadcasting at 1080p and maybe never will. This is because stations would rather use the extra bandwith for an additional channel. For the same reason, many current broadcasts are not even 1080i. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Radio Shack should have plug adapters for travel through Europe and the UK. There may be different plugs in different locations, with the UK being the most idiosyncratic. Your US wiring is fine - in fact overengineered - for 240 volts. The lower the voltage, the bigger the gauge needed to carry the necessary current, so you will notice that European wiring seems awfully flimsy. The critical thing is the transformer. I've never seen a computer power supply that could not handle both voltages, 120 for here and 240 for virtually everywhere else. All you need should be the plug adapter. Buy the travel set. Re: [CGUYS] is isass.exe a virus?
this I/lsass falls between explorer and MDM..exe. that is an i and an L in that first word. i am certain that mac does it better...maybe they use a different alphabet. Re: [CGUYS] .org sites
I do/did own a number of dot orgs, including slawecki.org,ppiusa.org, photoframes.org, thegerald.org and a bunch more. did them on godaddy as it was easy and i had an account. i think most of them have expired, as i did not use them. you can also register to foreign countries, if you really want a special site and it is not available in the net, org, com, At 08:38 AM 2/4/2008, you wrote: Register it! Re: [CGUYS] Not reconizing the slave drive
to beat it to death, set the jumpers on the master to master, the slave to slave. plug the master into the end of the tape and the slave in the middle connector.
