formatting zip disks in Pismo (OS 10.4)?

2006-02-20 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I'm going to send my mom a few zip disks from the pile and though it
would be nice to format them for her.

They are currently MSDOS formatted (fat16).
I'd like to format them for her Wallstreet (OS 9.2.2).
I opened disk utility and could see the zip disk and erase it but
couldn't change the format.

Is this even possible?
Perhaps all zip disks are DOS formatted?
For that matter is there any advantage to one format over the other?

Thanks

So far I have not found an adaptor that will work in OSX.

This has motivated me to install OS 9.2.1 on the Pismo.
Now I need to download the Belkin drivers, boot into Classic and give
it a try.

For your problem I agree with the USB and/or Firewire PCI card
suggestion.

A lot simpler than messing with the SCSI disk and you get new ports.

adding Classic to Pismo with Tiger, is 9.2.2 better than 9.2.1?

2006-02-04 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Following a suggestion I started my Pismo from the OS9.2.1 CD and
installed it on the internal disk (40 Gb one partition).
I had to tell it to save the old system folder but after that It went
through the install like normal.

It still boots in Tiger so I haven't ruined that installation.
I have got the 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 update, is there any benefit to going to
9.2.2 or am I better off at 9.2.1?

I can start Classic now (before I got a not installed error).
Now I need to get the Belkin drivers for the USB-SCSI adaptor and see
if I can make it work in Classic.

I'm assuming I need to be in classic when I install the drivers?

Re: Adding SCSI to a P'Book

2006-02-04 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Stardate 060204.15:30 -0500. A subspace message from Andrew in Ann
Arbor reads:

I've been pursuing the USB to SCSI adaptor question so I can connect
my Pismo running Tiger to an assortment of older Powerbooks (SCSI
disk mode).

And you won't, either.

Next to be tested were a couple of PCMCIA cards, one by Adaptec, one
by Belkin. The Adaptec caused stability issues -- it would work with
the Zip and the HD, but not the scanner. Adaptec have also stopped
developing drivers for it. The Belkin one worked with all three, so
we passed that onto the reseller for the customer to try. Lo! They
were well pleased!

Alas, it seems Belkin have stopped making it, so I've had a rummage
around the web, and have found one maker that has a couple of goodies
that bear further investigation. Ratoc (of Japan) make these doodads
that could well be the solution people with legacy technology are
seeking:
- the FR1SX is a SCSI-to-1394 adaptor, that plugs into your SCSI
device and provides a pair of normal FW400 sockets.
- the CB31U is a PCMCIA card that adds UltraSCSI (SCSI-3 and backwards)

Hope this is of some assistance.

Thanks, this is exactly what I've been looking for.
I have a Belkin USB-SCSI adapter which I'm hoping will work under
Classic.
I think a PC card would be a preferable solution since the USB adapter
is limited to the speed of the USB 1.1 port on the Pismo.
Oh well, it's mostly for emergency rescue and most of the older
powerbooks I might be called upon to rescue have small disk drives.

adding Classic to Pismo running Tiger?

2006-02-02 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Hello All

I've been loving Tiger on my 500 MHz Pismo but I want to figure out a
SCSI connection before I sell off the trusty Lombard and the best
solution I've found to date is a USB to SCSI adapter that only runs
under OS9.

So I want to install Classic on the Pismo.
The Pismo has a 40 Gb hard drive with 19 Gb used.
Get Info identifies it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Can I just install OS9 or do I need to partition the disk first?
If I need to partition can I copy the Tiger installation to my external
Firewire disk, partition the Pismo drive and copy the Tiger
installation back?

Is there a better way?

Thanks

Re: WiFI antenna

2006-01-28 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Has anyone ever come up with a way of connecting some kind of external
antenna to the PB to boost signal connectivity? I've got the G4 AL
15 machine, and I don't even see a decent place to attach something
to a screw. It would have been nice if there had been a plug or port
on the side of the screen that could have done this!

If your card slot is free you could look for a PC card adapter with an
antenna port.

Not as slick as the internal card though.
Probably easier to get a higher gain antenna on the access point.

Re: plugging in the power lead - does it matter?

2006-01-28 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

I read that one should always plug in the power brick before connecting
power lead to the Book.
If I move it from one place to another, I am conscientiously
unplugging it
and re plugging it in correct sequence rather than just carrying it
with the
power lead and brick connected and then replugging the plug into the
wall

while still connected.

I just want to check out if this is over paranoid behaviour or not?
I mean the manual suggests not to move the Powerbook while on but
people do

- but carefully - right?

I know that the 5XX series powerbooks were very particular about not
being plugged into an unplugged adapter. This was one of the first
(perhaps the first?) powerbook with the intelligent battery
controller.
Apparently plugging a 520 into an unplugged adapter would likely
confuse the battery controller.
Perhaps this is where the admonition against unplugging the adapter
from the wall first came from?

I'm not sure if the later powerbooks are as sensitive.
On the other hand the power jack on the powerbook is subject to
mechanical failure after some number of plug/unplug cycles so leaving
the adapter plugged in when you move the computer may risk corrupting
the powermanager but spare the power jack.

Treo 650

2006-01-25 Thread Andrew Blackburn
I have been using the Treo 650 since last fall with my iBook G4 (12.1/1.33
GHz) as well as my Thinkpad T42 from work. I use Palm Desktop for syncing
on both units, with the Outlook conduit on the Thinkpad and the iSync
conduit on the iBook.

To tell the truth, I'm a little disappointed with the iSync connection;
iCal, for example, lets you create multiple calendars for different
categories of events - i.e. Business, Personal - and the Palm Desktop
conduit doen't separate calendar items by category. Of course, there's no
iTunes sync either. Apparently, The Missing Sync does both of these things
and more; I just haven't had a chance to try it out...

Bluetooth sync does work, but it's S-L-O-W. Faster than IR sync, but still
painful compared to the USB cable.

I (personally) recommend getting one of the USB charge/sync cables; that
way, you can leave the Treo's charger behind. My iBook leaves power on to
the USB ports when it's asleep/closed and on wall power, so you can charge
your phone while you charge your laptop...

Re: wireless router security

2006-01-15 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

I have a D-Link wireless router - there are options to change from
the WEP 128 bit encryption to WPA personal.Would doing this
create enough of a wall for most people trying to hack in ?

I think I'd be prefer MAC address filtering, as I understand it both
WEP and WPA require some CPU time for the encryption which might be
enough to slow down the connection to a slower computer.
MAC address filtering is done at the router and should have no effect
on connection speed.
This thread has got me motivated to figure out how to enable MAC
address filtering on my Linksys...

Re: no Battery Time Left on Pismo

2006-01-15 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

For some reason I can no longer get info on how long my battery has
left in hours and minutes.

I can get the info in percentage, but if I ask for it to be shown as
time left, it says calculating... or is just a blank, depending on
which program I use to measure it. I have show battery status in the
menu bar checked in the Energy Saver Systems Preference. I also use
SlimBatteryMonitor. Both show the same percentage, but no longer the
time.

As best I remember this was working up till just a week or so ago.

I have a 400MHz Pismo, 40G, 768MB. I recently upgraded to Tiger and
then 10.4.3. Could have been the same time. Battery is fairly new. I
was getting about 4 hours or so last I remember seeing the time. Is
this a Tiger issue?

I tried running just on battery till it went to sleep (about 1-2 %),
then charging to full. Did this twice, still no joy so I tried reset-
nvram, reset-all. Still nothing but %.

I've got the same problem with a 500 MHz Pismo running a clean install
of Tiger with 512 Mb RAM.
It's a new aftermarket battery so I haven't worried about it but it
would be nice to have.

I did try running it down till it shut off but that made no difference.
Seems like if my 520 could figure out time remaining the Pismo should
be able to manage it.

Any experience with USB to SCSI adaptors in OSX?

2006-01-08 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Hello All
I'm shifting from a Lombard to a Pismo and want to be able to connect
to SCSI devices, specifically older powerbooks (520, 1400, Wallstreet)
using the SCSI dock connector.
To do this I've recently got a Belkin F5U015-TPW USB to SCSI adaptor
but have had no luck finding drivers for Panther. According to Belkin's
web site this device is OS 8 and OS9 only.
http://www.belkin.com/support/download.asp?download=F5U015-
TPWlang=1mode=

Does anyone know where I might look for OSX drivers?
Or can anyone recommend a different adaptor that works in OSX?

Thanks

If you can replace the hard drive you can replace the memory.
Go slow and beware static electricity.
I don't wear my polertec vest over my cotton shirt and I always touch
the aluminum frame around the hard drive before touching anything else.
The RAM sticks go into the socket at a 45 degree angle, make sure they
are all the way in then push them down flat against the board.

Try the memory in different combinations, each stick in each slot.
Try just one stick at a time, if it starts with one but not the other
you've got a good idea where the problem is.
If you can get it started Apple System Profiler will tell you what
memory it sees and if the external L2 cache is present.

sticky drawer on Pismo DVD drive

2006-01-03 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I've been trying to sort out a Lombard for my father in law and I have
a 6x DVD drive that seems to work OK once you get the drive closed.
The drawer binds as I try and close it, sometimes I have to open it and
clse it several times before I can get it to close all the way.

Once it's closed it works fine.
There seems to be a lot of friction in the slides so either something's
jumped the track or something needs lubrication.
If I can't find anything obvoiusly out of line I'm thinking of a little
silicon lube on the slides.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

using serial printer with Lombard running Panther?

Hello All
My father in-law is debating adopting my Lombard 400 running Panther
but wants to know if he can use the serial printer that he has been
using with his Wallstreet.
Has anyone had any experience with USB to serial adaptors and/or using
serial printers with OS 10.3.9?

Thanks

I'm not a service technician but sounds like you may have lost the L2
cache memory.

From an earlier post:

If the L2 cache is bad you will get a warning on start up:
the built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory.
Please contact a service technician for assistance
In OS9 Apple system profiler will report External L2 cache: Not
Installed if the cache is bad.
In OS 10.3.9 (panther) About This Mac will take you to the system
profiler (click on More Info) where it will report L2 Cache (per
CPU) 1MB if the cache is good.

I ran a Lombard (OS 9.2.2) with a bad cache chip and it started fine
(with the scary message) but it tended to have problems waking from
sleep.
I replaced the processor card (about $50 on the swap list) and it's
been much better since then.
You can also have the cache chip repaired (about $100) or get a G4
upgrade (about $300).

Good luck

Re: DVD stuck in Pismo

2005-12-30 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

I was watching a DVD via DVD Player in Jag on my Pismo and it froze
with the spinning beach ball. Now I can't even force quit and I can't
eject the DVD by dragging to trash or with my finger on the drive. I
can't shut down even. I try not to use the Pismo for playing DVDs just
because of this kind of poor functionality, but now I have a trapped
DVD disk in the drive.

On my Pismo's DVD drive there are two eject buttons.
The longer one is a switch that has the same effect as dragging the
icon to the trash and only works when the drive is powered up.
The other button is round and just big enough to press with a pen tip,
it is mechanical and will work even if the drive is removed from the
powerbook.

Good luck

Re: Battery Care

2005-12-28 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

finally, what's the final word on whether or not it's a good idea to
fully discharge your battery once a month or so?

PC magazine recently ran an article on batteries.
http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-2375-5-55-185739-286961-0-0-0-1

They say 500 charge/discharge cycles is about what you should expect.
They also figure if you discharge halfway before recharging it counts
as half a cycle.
I've also heard that a small discharge (90% remaining) might not count
as a cycle.

Re: Linksys wpc11 v4 OS 9

2005-12-23 Thread Andrew Blackburn
I used to really like Linksys' gear.

I've owned/worked with a BEFSR41 (the original cable/DSL router), a
BEFVP41 (the IPSEC VPN end-point version), and a BEFW11S4 (802.11b wireless
router). All were solid pieces of equipment, quite reliable, every one is
still in operation.

So when the company I work for wanted to get a VPN endpoint in place, I
ordered a WRV54G 802.11g access point/router/VPN endpoint without even
bothering to read a review.

Big mistake.

The IPSEC endpoint in it doesn't work...for some reason, unknown to God and
man, they left NAT traversal out, rendering the VPN endpoint just about
useless. The older BEFVP41 HAS it. To make matters worse, Linksys came out
with their QuickVPN software - which is supposed to be able to traverse
NAT - but of course, you can't have it installed on your computer with
another IPSEC client, and of course, there's no MacOS version (MacOS X has a
built-in IPSEC client, which WORKS with the BEFVP41). Linksys support, which
I'd never even needed before, put on a brave face but ultimately provided no
solution.

I don't know it it's just one bum product or a sea change in the way Linksys
does business, but check out linksysinfo.org and look up the comments on the
WRV54G... :(

wake from sleep for chron tasks? (was Mac mini slowing down...)

2005-12-19 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Except that it won't. Unless you schedule it specifically in Energy
Saver,

the Mac won't wake up when it's sleeping...

Is this option particular to OS 10.4?
I went into the energy saver panel in 10.3 and the three wake options
 I have are:

wake when modem rings
wake for ethernet network administrator access
allow power button to sleep computer

Might it be the second option?
Is there somewhere else I could look?

I was thinking of scheduling the computer to start up at 2:55 AM (or
just before the automatic maintenance tasks are scheduled) but I don't
know if a scheduled start up will wake a sleeping computer.

I do have Onyx and have run it a few times, maybe I need to look at
having it run itself automatically.

Thanks

Re: Lombard running hot

Are there any good, cheap solutions to keeping the Lombard cool. I've
got a Lombard 400 with OS 10.2.8, and it seems that it's always running
hot. I usually have it going while I'm relaxing on the couch, for
comfort reasons. Any suggestions?

Are you using the computer on a pillow or something soft?
Powerbooks shed a fair amount of heat through the underside.
If placing the 'book on a hard surface fixes the problem then all you
need is a small bit of plywood to got on top of your pillow and you're
home free.

Re: Wallstreet hinge repair

2005-12-07 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Greetings. I finally managed to score a good deal on a 233/cache, 14.1
Wallstreet off E-bay. It arrived a couple of days ago in better
condition than the E-bay seller advertised. Just goes to show that not
everyone is a crook I suppose.

Anyway, I have some questions.

The display hinges seem kind of 'loose' in that the display has about
an inch of free play when open. Is this a sign of the hinges getting
ready to fail?

If so, where is the best place to get them replaced/repaired?

1 travel seems a bit much but it might work that way for a while yet.
Or it might not.
My father in law's wallstreet has one broken hinge and it's quite
inconvenient.
I had the hinges on my wallstreet replaced by pbparts for about $70 and
they've been fine since then (3 years).

Check here for details:
http://www.pbparts.com/shop?
keywords=hinge+repairsearch_request_button=+Search+
You can also buy new OEM hinges and replace them yourself but I think
it might actually cost more than having PBparts install aftermarket
hinges.

exporting bookmarks from Safari 1.3.1 (v312.31)?

2005-12-05 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Hello all,
I'm switching over from a Lombard running Panther to a Pismo running
Tiger.
I'd like to export the bookmarks from Safari (1.3.1 (v312.31)) on the
Lombard and import them onto the Pismo (Safari 2.0 (412)).
I haven't found any export option in the menus, does such a thing
exist?
If there's no export function is there a preference file I can copy
from one machine to the other?
There are no bookmarks saved on the Pismo so replacing the bookmarks
would work as well as importing them.

Thanks

Lombard freezes on re-start?

2005-12-03 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I've been setting up a 400 MHz Lombard for my sister and have noticed a
disturbing problem.

It was running OS 9.2.2 with 320 Mb of RAM.
The L2 cache chip failed 6 months ago (The freeze on restart problem is
recent).
The freeze happens on restart but if I shut down and then start up all
is well.

Booting from the 9.0.4 CD makes no difference.
I deleted the system folder and installed OS 9.0.4 from CD but still
have the same problem.

Do I have a hardware problem?
Any suggestions as to what may have failed?

Re: Life of PBG4 Battery

2005-11-28 Thread Andrew Blackburn
I'm going to second Sionnach's comment about making sure you use the battery
on a regular basis. After a year of use, my Thinkpad's battery lasts just
as long now as it did when new - about 90 minutes. My co-worker, who got
his laptop about the same time, gets maybe 20 minutes...but he uses his
plugged in all the time; I use mine on battery almost every day.

Interestingly, my Thinkpad (T42) doesn't go nearly as long as my iBook
(G4/1.33) on battery power - the iBook goes for the better part of three
hours. I do have a 14.1 screen on the Thinkpad, vs. a 12 screen on the
iBook, but wouldn't have guessed that it would make such a difference...

The heat issue is probably connected with the G4 upgrade.
I never noticed the heat with the 266 MHz Wallstreet I used to have.
My Mom has it now, Wallstreets are tough.

If all you are doing is writing and surfing then a stock Wallstreet 300

I'm sure you could find someone with a stock 300 MHz wallstreet that
would be happy to trade.

Doesn't do much for the weight issue though.

The Lombard and Pismo are both thinner and lighter than the Wallstreet.
if you wanted a Lombard I could make you a deal on a 333 Lombard with a
400 MHz CPU.

Re: processor upgrades for Pismo?

2005-11-14 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

BUT, before you
consider buying a Pismo, consider this: The most important thing that
either raises or lowers the value of a Pismo is ONE thing: RAM. I've
seen Pismo's with a gig of RAM and just the 400 G3 going on eBay for
over $500.00 on eBay. . . WITH bidders! But then, I've seen the exact
same Pismo with only 128 meg RAM only selling for $190.00. I'd shop
more if I were you. . . hope this helps,

Thanks for the suggestion, I understand that Pismos aren't as fussy
about RAM as Lombards and Wallstreets. I paid $390 for a Lombard in
part because it had 512 Mb of RAm (and a larger HD and a CD burner and
Panther)
I can take my time as my daughter is happy with the Lombard for the
moment.
I'd just like to be able to back up my data from the Cube to the Pismo
(in firewire mode) and then be able to use that same data with the same
applications on the Pismo.
I could always get a firewire card for the Lombard and mount the Cube
as a firewire disk (haven't tried starting it in firewire disk mode but
understand it will do it) but I wouldn't have the nice internal Airport
card.
I worry that the Cardbus wireless card is going to get hit and the
card and the card slot will both get trashed.
Perhaps not a serious problem, for the price of a Pismo I could afford
the lower half of a Lombard and a new wireless card...

Re: processor upgrades for Pismo? Maybe Titanium instead?

2005-11-14 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

P.S. Actually, Daystar will also sell the whole G4 processor. You get
a G4/550 for $399, which is VERY expensive. The upgrade to your
existing processor costs $289. Before spending $399 on the whole
processor, though, plus RAM and HD and optical drive (1GB RAM +
40-80GB HD + Combo or Superdrive = $300-400), I'd consider a used
Titanium, which you can find for considerably less than the upgraded
Pismo would cost you.

Certainly the TiBook would be an improvement but I'm concerned about
reduced wireless range with the TiBook (also the AlBooks though I
really can't afford them). Since the Lombard spends all it's time
around the house with a wireless card and the reception is marginal on
the third floor I'm reluctant to get anything that doesn't get
reception at least as good as the Lombard.
I suppose I could use a Cardbus wireless card with the TiBook and it
would work just as well as in the Lombard.
The other issue is that I have a bunch of expansion bay drives that
will fit the Pismo but not anything later.
I'll look into selling all the Lombard/Pismo extra expansion bay stuff
and check TiBook prices.

It might make sense at the end of the day.

Re: How to transfer from Lombard to G4 tower

I just had a look, on the BW which has on-board firewire:
unfortunately no FW networking port shows up in the Network pane,
just the modem (which works perfectly), and ethernet (which stopped
working altogether a while back for some unfathomable reason).

It's not set up by default, you have to add it. Go to the Networks
control pane, and select in the lower dropdown (Show:) Network Port
Configurations

In that box click on New, then you should be able to select firewire.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=152307

Would this work on a Lombard with a firewire card?
One of the things that makes me consider trading in my Lombard in for a
Pismo is being able to connect my powerbook to my cube over firewire
using the firewire target disk mode builkt into the Pismo.
If I could do this with a Lombard (OS 10.3.9) and a firewire card I
wouldn't have to get a Pismo.
A pismo will need a SCSI card anyway (to connect to older powerbooks)
so I need to buy a card either way (and a firewire card is probably
cheaper).
Perhaps I could start the cube in firewire target mode then I could
mount it as an external disk on the Lombard (through the firewire
card)?

SCSI options for Pismo?

2005-10-31 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Thanks for all the pismo suggestions, it seems like a viable
replacement for the Lombard.
The only thing I might miss would be the SCSI port which I occasionally
use to connect to older macs.

Is there a plausible way to attach a SCSI device to a Pismo?

Thanks

recommendations for 3400?

2005-10-30 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Not really a G-book but close.
My sister has just come across a 200 Mhz 3400 with 80 Mb RAM and a 2
Gb hard drive.
She wants to do word processing, e-mail (with wireless card), light
web browsing and music downloading.
I suggested that music downloading wouldn't make sense with such a
small hard drive but that the other tasks should be possible.
I have a YDI diamond 802.11b card that works in a wallstreet or Lombard
with the stock Apple Airport extensions. Not sure if it will work with
the airport extensions in OS 8.6.

Questions:
Which OS, I'm thinking 8.6 or 9.1
Which browser?
Which e-mail client?

Dave
With the proper cable you can connect the Lombard to the SCSI port on
the tower and have the Lombard appear on the G4 desktop as an external
hard drive.

It's called SCSI disk mode and requires a specific cable.
It works just like firewire disk mode on later powerbooks.
The correct cable plugs into the HDI-30 (SCSI peculiar to Powerbooks)
port on the powerbook and the SCSI card on the G4.
Turn the Lombard on first, it should start up with a SCSI icon on the
screen.
Then start the G4, the Lombard should appear on the desktop as a hard
drive.

Drag and drop.

I wish there was a USB target mode for my Lombard.
I may need to get a Pismo.

Re: file sharing over network?

2005-10-19 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

From: Victoria Brandon
Subject: broken network
Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 11:04:25 -0700

Greetings listers --
All of a sudden my ethernet connection won't connect. It's the simplest
possible network, two computers (a BW G3 and a Lombard G-3 PB, both
running OS 10.3 and 9.2.2) intermittently tied together with a simple
crossover ethernet cable so that they can back each other up and so
that I can use whichever seems most convenient -- they virtually mirror
each other, or at least they did until the connection broke down a week
or so ago.

Victoria
I'm afraid I can't help you troubleshoot your problem since I've never
used file sharing over ethernet.

I was wondering if it would be fast enough for file backup.
It sounds like it worked for you.
Could I ask what size files you were backing up and how long it took.

Since both of my Macs (Cube and the Lombard) are connected through
the same router (Cube by ethernet, Lombard wireless) I shouldn't need a
crossover cable.

Is there any security risk to having file sharing on?
I know in the Windows world it's a risk.
For what it's worth I'm behind a Linksys wireless router.

Thanks

It came to me with the 128 mb of ram already onboard so I have no idea.
And I have read those same excerpts, but I thought I might get lucky as
some have and skirt the issue, but I guess not. No Macs with scsi that
have OS X on them. Well, since I've never taken a Powerbook apart I
guess that sort of limits me. I really didn't want to stay in 10.2, but
if that's all this machine can do so be it.

I've got a Lombard with 512 Mb RAm and Panther (10.3.9) and it works
fine except for some issues with freezing while asleep.
It came to me with the RAM and OSX installed so I can't tell you how it
was done but I'd suspect that the added RAM is the problem.
The SCSSI works as well (just used it to connect to a friends
Wallstreet)

You could try disabling the L2 cache with some third party software

In my experience a failed L2 cache will announce itself with a pop up

The built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory.
Please contact a service technician for assistance.

It never stopped the computer from starting (once you acknowledged the

I expect it might have been slower but never did any benchmarks to

linking Wallstreet and Albook with ethernet?

2005-10-07 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Hello all.
My father in law has decided on a new 14 iBook and needs to get stuff
from his old Wallstreet II (300 Mhz OS9) to the iBook (OS 10.4?).
I suggested the external USB drive case for the WS hard drive but he
wants to keep the Wallstreet as a backup computer (even though it has a
broken hinge).

The iBook doesn't have SCSI so he can't boot the WS in target disk mode.
Could he boot the iBook in firewire mode and use a firewire PC card to
mount it on the wallstreet? We'd need to find him a firewire card for
the wallstreet.

Could he connect the two computers with an ethernet cable?
It would be slow but we could do it with existing ports.
Do you need a crossover cable or a regular one?
Any links to tutorials?

Thanks

Andrew

Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From: Gene Osburn [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Wallstreet batteries
Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 13:59:49 -0700

I've got a battery that doesn't show up when inserted. I assume it's
dead.
It's the only battery I have for this wallstreet. It's been stored
for

several years, was fine before that.

Is there any utility that might get the computer to try charging it?
I'm
just wondering if maybe the charge has dropped so low that the
computer
doesn't recognise it, but perhaps if given some juice it may still
have a
little life in it.

There used to be a little utility from Apple called, I believe,
BatteryReset, which would just reset the little chip on the battery
so
that the battery would communicate with the Wallstreet that it's OK to
charge. Not sure where it is on the Apple download site, though...

Battery Reset only works with batteries that still have at least a
trace charge in them. If the WS can't see the battery in the bay
it's too dead to be revived. Sad but true -- LiIons that are stored
for too long without at least a 30-40% charge will die. I've never
even heard of any external charger/conditioner that will revive a LiIon
once it's reached this state; has anyone else actually saved one of
these...?

I thought I should respond to this in case others read it while
researching a solution to the same problem. I took Paul up on his kind
offer and he quickly sent me the battery reset utility. It worked
perfectly on the first try, and the battery charged for hours while I
used the computer. I'm waiting on new hinges for the wallstreet so I've
removed the display to protect the ribbon cables and am using an
external monitor instead. After the battery was fully charged, I went
on the net with the internal modem and the hard drive running
constantly, and it lasted for 2 hours 55 minutes.

I realize it won't last nearly as long when the display is back on, but
I'm happy nonetheless. :)

Thanks to all,
Andrew

iBook clamshell modem?

From photos I've seen, the modem in the clamshell iBook appears to be
the same as the modem in the Lombard and Pismo PowerBooks? Anyone know
for sure?

Re: importing bookmarks from Netscape to Safari?

2005-09-10 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

I don't know if it's the best way to do it, but I had noticed it in
passing so I'll pass it on: OnyX has an import bookmarks checkbox in
Appearance-Safari.

(I use the appearance-tweaking parts of OnyX to pin my dock at the
trash end so the trash can doesn't scoot out of the way when I try to
drag something onto it, and noticed this in exploring the other
settings.)

Anne

Safari Enhancer will allow you to import bookmarks from other apps or
an

html file. You can locate it on versiontracker.com

Thanks Anne, Safari Enhancer is just what I needed.
Versiontracker pointed me to
 http://www.lordofthecows.com/safari_enhancer.php
where they have versions for Jaguar, Panther and Tiger.
I downloaded it and ran it, it couldn't find the bookmark file probably
because I was importing from another computer.
Following the help file's suggestion I selected any file (?) and was
able to navigate to the file and import it.
It worked perfectly preserving all the subfolders in the correct
arrangement.

Now I'll go go look for OnyX

Thanks for all the suggestions

importing bookmarks from Netscape to Safari?

2005-09-08 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I'm starting to know my way around Panther (10.3.9) on my Lombard but I
can't figure out how to import my bookmarks.
I''ve got my Netscape 7 mail imported into Mail but I can't figure out
how to import the bookmarks.
I missed the chance to import when I first started out and now the only
suggestion is to import the links one at a time.

Is there a utility that will import bookmarks for me?
Maybe I need a newer version of Safari, I've got 1.3 (v312) now?

Thanks

For portable use I'll plug the card into a powerbook and pick up
wherever I left off.

Call me crazy, but why not just use IMAP or uncheck the Remove copy

than buying another machine to use some sort of removable media.

I confess I haven't figured out IMAP yet, the files are then kept on a
remote server.

I like the idea that my e-mail is on my hard drive.
I do keep copies on my ISPs server which is good for back up but if I
go to a second computer I have to download and delete messages I've
already read.
Having the mail files on removable media would eliminate downloading
files twice and also offers an easy recovery is case one computer dies.
Just plug the card into the other computer and pick up where you left
off.

Why not use a USB card reader plugged into the Lombard (or a Pismo).
Or simpler is to use a memory stick.

I'm trying to avoid projecting parts on the laptop.
I already worry about the cisco wireless card getting hit, a USB memory
stick would be just as bad.
Incidentally my Sandisk 1Gb Cruzer mini USB memory stick has worked in
my Lombard under OS 9 and 10. It's PC formatted but the files work
fine.
With a Pismo I would use the internal wireless card with a compact
flash card for data.
Pismos are cool, I need to find a barebones model and swap all my
Lombard peripherals over.

Question, MS Office or Open Office/Neo Office for G4 iBook OSX?

2005-08-24 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I'm looking for feedback about office suite packages for my Dad to use
on his G4 iBook (running Jaguar).
Right now he's using Office 97 in classic mode but he suspects that this
may be causing instability and freezes (need to ask him if Office is
crashing or the whole OS is crashing).
I told him that those of us who toil on the Windows side frequently
associate system instability with the addition of MS software but I'm
not sure he is convinced.
Also Office 97 is increasingly unable to read Office files he receives
from others (presumably later versions).

I'm inclined to recommend Open Office or Neo Office www.openoffice.org
but that may not be right for him.
He really doesn't like tinkering from his computer and he can get Office
at academic pricing ($150?) so he might well be happier just buying
Office and installing it.

I'd like to here from more serious Open Office (or Neo Office) users
concerning computability with other office programs.
If it will read as wide a range of formats as MS Office then I might
take a shot at downloading it and burning a CD for him.
I like Neo Office but I don't do much more than simpltext with it so I
know nothing about conversions.

Thanks

Re: best photo organizer

2005-08-17 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
By way of reminder, I'm the one trying to save photos from iPhoto to
CD, but iPhoto keeps filing them for me in folders that are numbered
by year, then within the years by month, and then within the months
by day.
As a result, these photos
often have duplicate numbering systems. So when I try to save them
all at once, I am told that a photo already exists with that name,
and do I want to replace it? I tried that once, and ended up with
around 600 photos, so that means that about 500 of them are somehow
duplicates.

My PC son says there's an automatic way to renumber into a
consecutive series a group of photos, files, whatever, that are
grouped into one folder. If I could do that, then I could burn all
of these photos without using iPhoto to do it.

Claire
Graphic Converter www.lemkesoft.de will do batch renaming, batch
conversion to a different format and a bunch of other things.
You open a window, select the files you want renamed, fill in how you
want renamed, you can add to the original name or make up a new one.

It's shareware but the trial version is fully usable.
You just have a nag screen for 30 seconds when you start up.
I've actually paid (about $35) for a couple of copies for various family
members.

John
When you organize scanned photos in iPhoto do they all show up as the
date you scanned them? The program has no way of knowing when the photo
was taken.
My sister is starting in on a pile of family slides and was asking about
what program to use.

I'm inclined towards Graphic Convertor www.lemkesoft.de.
It has a browser function that displays thumbnails of all the images
in a folder. You can move, delete, rotate or rename in the browser
window. If you open an image there are more editing functions than I can
figure out. It's shareware, free to try.

I suppose I should poke around iPhoto and see if it has a similar
browser function.

Does iPhoto offer much in the way of editing functions.
The couple of times I've opened iPhoto I've been put off by it's desire
to take over the process but perhaps there's something in preferences
that would allow me to browse existing folders.

WallStreet OS X on external HD?

2005-08-05 Thread Andrew Main
It's been a couple of years since I worked on a WallStreet PB. I
remember noticing that the WS will start from an external disk
connected to the PC Card slot whether it is selected or not; IOW, if
there is a disk with a viable System connected to the PC Card slot, the
WS cannot be forced to start from its internal HD. However, this was
with the Classic (OS 8/9) System.

Now I'm finding that the WS will NOT start from an external HD with OS
X connected to the PC Card slot, even if the internal HD is removed. In
fact, attempting to do so will sometimes screw up the WS so badly that
it won't start from an internal disk either thereafter until a PMU
reset is performed (fn-ctrl-shift-power).

I first ran into this yesterday with a WS (300MHz) someone brought to
me for repair. After spending a couple hours researching all the
necessary updates to bring 10.2.8 to optimum (Apple gives different
stories in different places), I installed 10.2.8 on an HD in a PC Card
case, connected it to the WS (it mounted, though the System on the
internal HD is not well), then selected it in Startup Disk, and
Restarted. The PB wouldn't start. And, after disconnecting the PC Card
case, it now wouldn't start from its internal HD; I had to reset the
PMU to wake it up again.

Somewhere in the process (I don't remember the exact sequence) I even
installed the external HD in a SCSI case (with an IDESCSI adapter
board) and tried to start from it via the SCSI port on the back of the
WS. Same result.

So I turned to a WS (300MHz) I have, and got the same results. I
thought it might be something funny about the Toshiba HD I was using in
the external case, so I removed the internal HD (with 10.2.8 9.2.2)
from the WS, put it in the PC Card case, and tried to start the WS.
After the startup chord, it showed the OS 9 happy face for a few
seconds, then restarted itself (complete with startup chord), then did
the same thing again, and again It appeared that it was trying to
start from the OS 9 on the disk, then finding that the disk was set to
start from OS X, so restarting to switch to OS X, then finding it
couldn't start from OS X, so returning to the OS 9, and so on in an
endless loop.

I put the HD back in the PB, and it started just fine in 10.2.8. I
switched it to 9.2.2, and it started okay also. So then I again removed
the internal HD (now set to start in 9.2.2), put it in the external PC
Card case, connected it to the PB, and it started fine, in 9.2.2.

Conclusion: It appears that the WallStreet PowerBook cannot be run from
an external disk using OS X 10.2.8. At least this is true of the two I
have on hand, one of which (mine) has no other problems I know about.
Can anyone confirm this from your experience?

Sorry, I can't give detailed information. There are two display panels

each of which has its own specific cable (which was why I couldn't put

After 2-1/2 years on OS X (and providing support thereon to numerous
clients), the only repair utility I've found useful is DiskWarrior.
Norton Utilities were never properly upgraded for OS X, and I've seen
too many problem reports with TechTool (I read MacInTouch every day) to
trust it. DiskWarrior, on the other hand, once it was properly updated
to work with OS X, continues to provide both routine directory
maintenance and occasional miraculous cures.

Note: DO NOT USE the TechTool Deluxe that comes with AppleCare on any
Tiger Mac; it can and probably will trash your HD. TTD has not been
updated in years, and has never been of much use anyway; it's criminal
that Apple is still bundling it with AppleCare. See
http://macintouch.com/support08.html#jul28.

I'm a big fan of Macaroni http://atomicbird.com/, which automates
Repair Permissions and the three cron routines so the user doesn't have
to remember to do them. Out of the box it repairs permissions once a
week, and does the daily, weekly and monthly 3 am cron routines
whenever the computer is on. You can also configure it to do any other
Unix-based maintenance automatically. Until Apple buys Macaroni and
includes it in OS X, I buy licenses by the dozen, and install it on
every Mac I set up.

OnyX (not OnXy) http://www.titanium.free.fr/english.html is an
excellent utility for doing all sorts of chores and interface
adjustments, similar to Cocktail and others, but free. (I've been
having trouble downloading the Tiger version, though; the dmg won't
mount.) A similar utility which you can run from the menubar is
MainMenu; it's free but I sent a contribution 'cause it's so well done.

Some other utilities add-ons I like: AppleJack, RCDefaultApp, PDF
Broser Plugin (Tiger Safari can display PDFs, but this plugin -- free
for personal use -- still has more features), ClearDock, iSnip, Easy
Find, WeatherPop, URLWell, FruitMenu (I didn't switch to OS X until I
could have a configurable Apple menu), Little Snitch, Safari Aquafier,
and uControl (which I use to allow trackpad scrolling; it doesn't work
in 10.4, so I'll have to look into SideTrack, iScroll2 -- which doesn't
work with my trackpad -- or perhaps the newly released Free Focused
Scroll). I also recently discoverd AcidSearch and Sogudi, which allow
me to customize the Safari web search function.

All can be found at MacUpdate or Version Tracker.

The Pismo does have a temperature sensor, but something was changed in
one of the 10.3.x updates that made it impossible for Temperature
Monitor and other utilities to read from it. The fan will go on when it
overheats. I find mine overheats (both when it was a 500MHz G3 and now
as a 550MHz G4) when (a) there is intense disk activity, such as
copying multi-GBs or installing System software (which is annoying, but
nothing I can do about the latter so I just leave the room); and (b)
when certain apps hog the CPU. When the fan starts screaming during
normal use, I open Activity Monitor to see which is the culprit;
usually it's Safari suddenly using 70-90% of the CPU; I look through
the pages I have open and close any that look suspicious (one that
consistently causes this problem is the International Herald Tribune
http://www.iht.com) until Safari retires back to its customary
10-20%, then after a while the fan will shut up. Another CPU hog is
Canon's CanoScan utility; some kind of sloppy coding, I guess.

What laptop is it?

Hi Folks,

Can anyone identify this laptop I please?

Its a G3 PowerBook, one that looks like a Pismo, but its not, its
much thicker than a Pismo. It has a black keyboard, and its specs
are 233MHz, 2Gb HD, 32Mb RAM, although I have upgraded it to 256Mb.

I am guessing its a Lombard, but I just want to check. I need to know
as I am looking for a few parts for it. I need the two rubber
stoppers at the top of the inside of the screen, a new outer LCD case
and a CD-ROM or DVD drive - so if anyone has any spare in the UK, let
me know!

Thanks,

Andrew McCall

The PowerBook Guy has a great selection, but he's a wee bit expensive;
I don't think I've ever bought anything from him, as I can usually find
better sources. In any case, I can get the bulb; see below.

right away and just told me the problem occured and they fixed it.

From what I've read (see below) the pink/red color is mostly likely the
bulb growing old; of course replacing the whole display with one with a
good bulb would fix it.

I've owned my Pismo since new and I think I've spent at least 1500 in
additional repairs and upgrades to it. By far compared with my 17
powerbook thePismo is still a great computer.

Indeed, I'm very fond of mine, but am thinking seriously of moving up
to a 17 G4, for added display space and power. I haven't tried 10.4
yet, but although a recent upgrade to 550MHz G4 considerably enhanced
the Pismo's ability to work with OS X, it's still frustratingly slow at
times. I'll certainly miss the Pismo's ergonomics, especially the
one-hand trackpad; the G4 PBs' design is very snazzy looking, but less
usable, requiring two hands for the trackpad, which is annoying.

Thanks for the responses to my query. I was wondering if there might be
any new information in the user community since the last time I
researched this. For any who might be interested, here's the

Not sure of the details yet, but at this price I'd rather pay to have
it done than try to do it myself; I've taken apart a lot of PowerBooks,
but dismantling display panel assemblies is more stress than I'd care
to deal with. Used to do my own auto tuneups, too, but now I pay a real
mechanic who can do in an hour what took me an afternoon.

I actually have two more 'Pismo' PowerBooks, in addition to my own
trusty companion (which has a 550MHz G4, 40GB HD, 640MB RAM), which I'm
preparing to sell; at least one will also need the bulb replaced. As
for take-apart, I have the Apple service manual, and excellent
instructions are provided online at, inter alia:

Pismo PowerBook display failing

2005-07-19 Thread Andrew Main
My 'Pismo' PowerBook's display is starting to show the dreaded pink
tinge. It appears whenever the PB awakens from sleep (or starts up), in
the lower left area of the screen, and goes away after a few minutes. I
remember there has been some discussion of this in the past, but don't
recall the details. Anyone have any suggestions? Is it caused by the
light bulb, which I understand can be replaced? Can anyone suggest a
good source and instructions? Or is it something in the display panel
itself?

Thanks,

Lombard cache repair link and reset report

2005-07-13 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Why not just get the L2 cache replaced ? Daystar
will do it for ~$30 + shpping, IIRC.

$30 must be with a processor upgrade (but replacing the CPU would mean a
new cache anyway?).

I was looking at the cache repair from Daystar
http://4daystar.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPRODProdID=150
but at $110 for the repair I decided to get a replacement Lombard with a
not-failed-yet cache chip.
I checked yesterday and booting the Lombard in OS 9.2 gives the problem
with cache memory message whether you start from the CD or from the
hard drive.
System Profiler will show whether the cache is working in either OS 9 or
OS X.
I haven't noticed any speed change in the Lombard that has the failed
cache (OS 9.2.2) but it's used by my daughter so she doesn't really ask
much of it.
We had noticed more freezes requiring the reset button after the chip
failed, usually it wouldn't wake up after sleep.
The OS X (3.9) Lombard requires the reset to wake up less than 1/4 of
the time. I think it seems to happen more often when we leave Safari
running.

Lombard keyboard problems

2005-07-13 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

hello all
As I mentioned my solution to the Lombard cache failure was to buy
another Lombard with a good cache.
The new machine came with Panther installed, 512 Mb RAM, a 20 Gb drive
and a CDR drive. A very nice package with one problem.

Several keys on the keyboard don't work.

On the left the caps-lock key is out as are the volume up key, the
4, the R, the F and the V key.
On the right the f9 key, the 9 key, the O key, the L key, the
. key, the up arrow and down arrow keys are out.

For the moment I've just swapped the keyboard off the old Lombard and
the new machine is fine although there was some confusion when I
couldn't log into the Admin account with the new keyboard.
Then I remembered that I had changed the admin password to one with an
R in it which I had to leave out so I could re-enter the password
(this time with the R).

Meanwhile the bad keyboard on the old Lombard is showing the same problems.
My question is could this be a error in installing the keyboard, perhaps
not seating the cable correctly, or is the problem inside the keyboard?

I need to make sure it's not operator error before I yell at the seller.

Thanks

startup cache error message on Lombard

2005-07-13 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I just started up the Lombard with the bad L2 cache to check the
keyboard and noticed that I didn't get the problem detected with L2
cache message during startup.
I've got this message before on this machine and don't know why I didn't
get it this time.
The external cache entry under system profiler still shows as not
installed so it hasn't fixed itself.

Power on problem with Pismo.

2005-07-08 Thread Andrew McCall
Hi Folks,

I have a Apple PowerBook G3 Pismo. It has been upgraded with a
PowerLogix BlueChip G3 900MHz CPU and 1Gb RAM.

When powered on, the system works fine and I don't have any issues
with it, however, over the last few weeks it has developed a problem
when being powered off.

When powering it back on, I can hear the hard disk spin up, but the
screen stays black and I don't get the Macintosh chimes. I have to
pull the power and then try again. Occasionally will get four high
pitch beeps coming from the speakers - I presume this is some sort of
debug code. Eventually the system will power on and boot an the whole
thing is fine.

The main battery is totally shot, and I think the PRAM battery might
be gone because the time is wrong when I start up - but this gets
corrected straight away via NTP.

Can anyone suggest what the problem could be? Do you think replacing
the PRAM battery will fix this?

This isn't a *major* problem as I generally use it as a desktop
machine, but recently my girlfriend wanted to take it to university to
do a presentation on, and I had to say no as I couldn't trust it to
boot!

Re: Lombard OS X Install

2005-06-28 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

In a not so small nutshell, I have a lombard and have installed OS X
via a firewire external HDD. All is grand. I repeated the process on
a slightly smaller (30 vs 20 gig) and it is an abject failure.

 The problem
seems to be the smaller HD, as the larger HD works fine. I suspect
the OS install is the culprit, though I can't tell you why. At any
rate, help would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a Lombard 400 with a 18 Gb drive (IBM DJSA-220) running 10.3.9.
Seems to work fine with 512 Mb RAM.

I must have missed something - any reason why we are advertising a
company here when all you need to do is spend 50 USD on a processor ?

When I lost the cache on my Lombard I checked E-bay for replacement
processors. The 400 Mhz CPUs were going for around $100.
The concern I had with a second hand processor is making sure that the
cache isn't bad on the replacement and having confidence that the cache
wasn't about to fail.
I'm not sure if the cache weakness is found on all Lombard CPUs (a
question of when it fails rather than if) or whether a fraction of the
CPUs have the problem (and you might get a good one that would last).
For $110 you can get the cache chip replaced with an aftermarket chip
that presumably doesn't have the same weakness.
The Daystar upgrade is more expensive ($230) but it gets you a G4
processor which might be worthwhile for some.
Despite my misgivings I ended up getting a used processor along with a
used Lombard (Thanks Harbormaster).
I went for the deal because the new old Lombard came with 512Mb RAM, a
20 Gb drive, a CD burner and Panther all installed and integrated.

OSX rocks! Now I understand why it got all the rave reviews.

I've got this one printing via USB from a Win98 Laptop and printing over

The reviews I read criticized the small paper tray (100 sheets) and
there were some concerns raised about durability (mostly along the lines

Re: Lombard zip disk works here with extension version 6.0.6

2005-06-02 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

I recently did a clean install of OS 9.2.2 upgrading from 9.1.
 Since then
my internal VST zip disk doesn't see a disk in it until I have
 rebooted with disk inserted.

I just checked my Lombard (sleeping since yesterday).
Inserted the VST zip module and put in a disk and it mounted it right away.
The lombard is system 9.04 updated to 9.1 then 9.2.1 then 9.2.2.

The Iomega extension is iomega driver update Mac OS 9 version number
6.0.6 dated August 18 1999.
I had to find the extension in the system folder and get information to
get the version number, it wasn't shown in extension manager.

Help w/ AOL, Jaguar, Wallstreet

2005-05-31 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Is anyone out here still using AOL in OS X?

My sister is, and I promised I'd help her work out some problems.
Unfortunately, I can't figure it out. The issue is that AOL won't
talk to the Wallstreet's modem. I installed it on my Pismo (10.3.9),
and that's what I'm using to connect right now.

On the Wallstreet (running 10.2 Jaguar, which update I'm not entirely
sure), AOL's idiot setup always finds the right modem description
(Apple Internal 56k v.90), but it seems to want to select the
printer/modem port for the connection.

When using so-called expert setup, I pick the right modem
description and the internal modem for the port.

Either way, when AOL tries to dial, it fails with results like modem
not accepting our commands or modem cannot find a carrier signal.

I've verified that AOL Dialup is the mode selected in the Network
preference pane, and nothing seems wrong there.

The modem works fine in OS 9/AOL 5, so there's no hardware or phone
line issues.

Does anyone have any ideas?

FYI, I'm in digest mode since I've been stuck with AOL dialup for a
couple of days.

Thanks,
Drew

Re: Help w/ AOL, Jaguar, Wallstreet

2005-05-31 Thread Andrew Kershaw

You'll probably get this advice in buckets, but, here goes:
Dump AOL.
Our nonprofit has had TERRIFIC results and support from one of our list
member's ISP; JMUG CONNECT. Sam is always helpful and knows his stuff.
$15.00 a month for national dialup. http://www.jmug-connect.net/. Sam
rocks!
We had a similar issue with a recipient's 'book who put AOL on it. Ended up
simpler to dump AOL and go with a different provider.
raino

Yeah.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm really not interested
in hearing this argument. I've got a technical problem with a
hardware/software combo, and I'm not interested in anybody's personal
take on the software/service provider choice that my family has made.

That being said, I think that except for the additional overhead that
AOL injects into your bandwidth, AOL is really a very nice service.
It might be overpriced, but it does offer a lot of tools for internet
neophytes that no other service provides. AOL is a SERVICE, not a
program.

If all you want is a PPP connection, there are plenty of alternatives
(even some that are free or close to free). If you want an Internet
Service Provider that does more than give you PPP, AOL is great.

Please excuse my diatribe, and thank you for taking the time to respond.

Peace,
Drew

I have understood that non-Firewire Macs are excluded from
Tiger the way non-USB Macs were excluded from Panther.

I have also understood that it is the install process that is
the problem as apparently Tiger runs well on older Macs,
often faster, which sounds very good, so...

Will I get a good result if I fit my Lombard's harddrive in my
wife's TiBook (ooh er...), install Tiger and then refit it in the
Lombard ?

How much does the machine model affect the installed software ?

I recall the days of System 7 with System enablers... ;o)

Re: Auto adapter revised

2005-05-18 Thread Andrew
Inverters work, but are a clunky solution at best. Auto adapters for
laptops are a bit pricey, but are also sleek and compact, and usually have
interchangeable tips so you can use them on your current PowerBook and also
on whatever you might be using next year.

There are also for a bit more $$ universal adapters that work on AC AND DC.
I have the Kensington and leave the car cord in my glove box and carry the
adapter in my PowerBook case with the AC cord attached. This also has
interchangeable tips, so I can also use it with my ThinkPad when I plan on
gaming on the road.

I think the laptop auto adapters are too expensive. It's much cheaper
to buy a small 120v AC inverter than fits your lighter plug that's
larger wattage than your regular wall charger and then use your regular
charger in the car. Sam's Club has 70-watt inverters for $13.24 each.
You can also use other AC devices such as mobile phone chargers or GPS
or iPod, etc.

Re: Wallstreet Tiger

2005-05-17 Thread Andrew F.
The Wallstreet on Panther is much like the Lombard on Tiger, meaning it is
for the most part compatible, but intentionally restricted only by the
Install program on the CD or DVD. I used the exact same method to install
Tiger on my wife's Lombard and it works great, but the Wallstreet is simply
not Tiger-compatible.

A similar analogy is the Kanga G3 PowerBook, which will not load OSX without
XPostFacto. The Kanga has hardware that just will not run OSX without
XPostFacto adding the necessary drivers to OSX. The Wallstreet has an older
video card than the Lombard or Pismo, not to mention different motherboard
components. One or more of those components, while supported natively with
a driver in Panther, is no longer supported in Tiger.

Panther is the best you will get on a WallStreet until XPostFacto adds Tiger
support for a WallStreet.

Honestly, I'd be happy you got Panther running, many WallStreet owners
aren't able to. I didn't expect Tiger to work on the Lombard, and consider
it entirely a bonus that it does, not an entitlement on a 6-year-old laptop.

Re: WMP won't play on 10.4

2005-05-15 Thread Andrew
Well, clean install is always a solution. Upgrades are always trouble,
always were, always will be. Doesn't matter if you are going from Windows
98 to Windows XP or from Panther to Tiger, taking a new OS and writing its
files directly on top of an older OS is just asking for trouble. Yeah, most
things will work, but it will always be a mess under the hood.

Sorry, that's just the way it is.

Are you saying that there is no solution other than an Archive

Regardless of what caused the problem, it makes no sense to me that
deleting the application and Preferences, followed by a reinstall
would do the trick. However, I'm not the only one reporting that this
doesn't fix it.

Once again, the problem isn't Tiger, or QT7, the problem is that you did an
UPGRADE install.

Are you trying to play HD content by any chance? Here are the sys
 requirments for QT7:

 http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html

Take special note of the requirements for HD. No powerbook in
 production
 meets those requirements.

Has anybody tried to play the HD stuff on their powerbook? How was
 it?

Re: OT Printer / all-in-one recommendations...

2005-05-13 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
 Date: Fri, 13 May 2005 16:02:26 -0500
 From: Van Snyder siouxperman gmail.com
 Subject: Printer / all-in-one recommendations...

Pardon me if this is a bit off topic, but I figured you guys were the
 best source for this info.

I'm in the market for a new printer. In the past, I have been an
advocate of HP - though lately I'm wondering if they haven't dropped
 the ball.

In particular, I'm looking at the Canon Pixma ip4000, ip4000r, or
ip6000d. I'd really like to be able to use all the features -
duplexing, etc. Anybody have any experience with the Pixma line? Or,
does anybody have recommendations for a good inkjet general purpose +
 photo printer?

I would consider an all-in-one if there is one that image capture
works well with - so that I can share it as a scanner and a printer
(that would be ideal). My understanding related to this is that there
isn't one device that works as such under OS X.
Van
I've been pretty pleased with the Brother MFC420CN.
It's a very compact inkjet printer, flatbed scanner and fax with a built
in ethernet interface and a built in card reader that I can use from my
560x.
I've got it plugged into my wireless router so my wife and daughter can
print form anywhere. My desktop (that dare not speak it's name) is
connected by ethernet. The solid state 560x doesn't have enough disk
space to install the full network package so I'm using a much trimmer
USB only driver that offers most of the functions of the network driver
in a fraction of the disk space.
The paper tray only holds 100 pages or so so it's not a high production
machine but for a small office like mine it fits very well.

Re: Buying a Pismo

There are also plenty of used Mac dealers like Wegener media and others who
often have near-mint older PowerBooks with a warranty, though you will pay a
bit more than eBay.

Keith,
I know where you are at; I was in this position about a year ago.

You can buy on eBay reasonably safely - I did it from overseas even.

Learn how to use it. The best feature of eBay is the seller feedback
rating, which sellers are very concerned to keep as high as possible.
You have ninety days after the purchase to leave feedback for the
seller. Most sellers are very happy to please.

Also you can get an idea of the current prices by doing an advanced
search for completed items; that will let you know if its in your
range.

There are good Pismos going on eBay regularly. If you are not in a
rush, you will find a near new unit.

To get some extra life you might also like to upgrade to G4 550 MHz
which costs ~ 300. Happy with my Daystar upgrade, even if the fan is
running more often.

Good luck.

sale anywhere? Ideally I'd like a new machine that's just been sitting
in somebody's warehouse all these years but I figure that's pretty much
a pipe dream. So I guess I'm probably looking at used machines. The
problem is I have no clue about buying a used computer--how do I make
sure I'm not getting one that's just as beat up as the one I have?
 Anybody got any ideas?

OS X upgrade for Lombard

2005-05-08 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Now that Tiger is out I'm about ready to upgrade my Lombard to Panther.
Does it matter which version of 10.3 I get?
Is Panther available on CDs or is it DVD only?
(the Lombard has a DVD drive but I might want to try upgrading my Mom's
Wallstreet which only has a CD)

Doe the Panther CD's include OS 9 classic or should I hang onto my OS
9 CD?

Lombard hardware questions, loose screen and noisy power supply

2005-05-08 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I'm contemplating doing something about the blown L2 cache on my Lombard
400. I might go for the G4 upgrade and Panther but there are a few
mechanical concerns I'd like to resolve before I put any more money into
this machine.

The screen has about 15 mm free play when it's in the up position.
With the 520 series this was a symptom of failing hinge attachements.
Should I worry about the Lombards hinges?
Has anyone else noticed this looseness in their Lombard?
something on the right hand side is making a high pitched whistle when
the machine is asleep.
The pitch of the whistle changes when I unplug the charger but not when
I remove the battery. Is this the sound of a power management board failing?
Interestingly enough the noise went away for a bit about the time the
black brick charger failed.
I took the charger apart and found that one of the solder connections
holding the power cord socket to the board had loosened enough to burn
(scorch marks and soot). Possibly repairable presuming nothing else was
fried. I had a spare charger so I didn't bother.

Thanks

Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-05 Thread Andrew F.
Actually, if you do a good backup, there really is no reason to wait. If I
was the slightest worried about instability (which thus far I have no reason
to be), I can always just boot from my external FireWire drive into my old
Panther install. Fortunately, I haven't had to do that yet, and Tiger
remains a delight after a full week. Haven't even had to restart my
PowerBook yet.

2005-04-27 Thread Andrew
Sounds like a great reason to find another school. My law school recommends
a Dell laptop, but visit any lecture hall and you will see just about
everything on the market, including a few iBooks and PowerBooks. My last
semester (Spring 04) I sat next to a guy using an old PowerBook 5300ce
everyday.

I can see an engineering or computer field requiring PC architecture if the
required software is PC only and VPC is too slow, but other than that, its
none of their business and would be a real deal breaker for me.

Re: Locked Folder

2005-04-24 Thread Andrew Kershaw
rm is the Unix command to remove a file. -r means do it recursively
through subdirectories and the -f means 'force deletion'.

Which reminds me of something I saw on slashdot some time ago:
rm -rf /bin/laden
Hmm.
In all seriousness, learning some basic UNIX commands is incredibly
useful for Mac OS X.

Peace,
Drew

Re: Wallstreet battery probs?, try battery reset software?

2005-04-21 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Hi, gang. - just picked up a Series II Wallstreet 266.

It won't start up unless AC adapter's connected. It came with two BTI
batteries but neither one shows any charge lights when installed, and
there's no indication that they're charging.
 Red X through battery icon
in menu bar, Battery Monitor CS module options greyed out.
 I've pulled
the batteries and disconnected AC, gonna let it sit a while then check
if it's still holding time; couldn't be as simple as needing new PRAM
battery, could it? Anybody seen similar issues with your WS?
Have you tried battery reset?
It's an Apple utility for OS 8.1 and 9 (not sure about 10) that works on
Wallstreets and Lombards (but apparently not on Pismos) that resets a
battery's microprocessor.
Works for batteries that are sound but have the internal controller
confused so they are reported to the computer as dead.

Here's a bit from the readme file:
About Battery Reset 2.0
What Is Battery Reset 2.0?
Battery Reset 2.0 addresses a situation that may occur with some
PowerBook G3 Series and iBook computers in which the battery, while in
the system, doesn't show up in the Control Strip, or a red X appears
over the battery icon in the menu bar.

Battery Reset 2.0 includes two components. For PowerBook G3 Series
computers, a file called Battery Updater is installed in the
Extensions folder and an application called Battery Reset is installed
on your hard disk. For iBook, only the file called Battery Updater is
needed and is installed in the Extensions folder.

Installation Requirements
To install and use the Battery Reset 2.0 software, you need the following:
A PowerBook G3 Series (family number M4753 or M5343) or iBook (family
number M2453) computer. The family number is located on the label on the
bottom of the computer.

Mac OS 8.1 or later installed

Re: Network Printer options, Brother MFC 420 CN

2005-04-18 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
I purchased the 2430 DL and it works perfectly. You really ought to
research a printer before you buy it.
This reminded me that I should report back on my printer experience.
I had asked about inkjet printers here and on the Thinkpad list and
based on several comments I got a Brother MFC 420 CN color printer,
copier and fax.
So far it prints over the wireless 80211b network from the Lombard G3
(OS 9.2) as well as over ethernet from the desktop that dare not speak
it's name (WinXP). The Thinkpad didn't have enough disk space for the
whole print/fax/scan software package but Brother was considerate enough
to provide a non-network print/scan driver for direct USB connection.
I haven't got the scanner or fax to work wirelessly on the Lombard
though I haven't tried real hard.
Facsimile shows up as an option in the Word98 print menu and the
scanner shows up as a twain device in Graphic Converter.
All in all I'm happy, the only downside seems to be the limited paper
tray capacity (120 pages). This doesn't bother me since I don't print
large amounts. Besides the printer is so small it sits on a corner of my
desk which makes adding paper easy.
