I think there's some details in wamcom.org. It's not simply a

A: Wamcom was pretty unstable with 9.1, but I'll try it again with

Figure out why. I use WaMCom Moz on 9.1 and 9.2.2 and found it to be

B: I'll try the latest iCab build and get back to you on that. I

Well, of course it is. The betas *explicitly* say they're BETA test

But it still supports CSS etc far better than any other browser on OS 9.

Make sure there's enough free space on the HD for the spool files.

What application is involved?

Have you given the application itself more memory?

Try turning OFF background printing. This eliminates HP's buggy
background applet from the mess (it has its own memory requirements).

WEP will lock out 99.9%.

WPA is better (but pls remember to use a long key).

You could also set your router to only talk to specific MAC

authorized computer AND know the WEP or WPA key.

I was thinking I could perhaps create another network name and WPA

Not worth the effort, IMO. Just secure what you have and let the

OT JCL (was Re: system backups/copies)

2006-01-15 Thread darm0k

At 1:00 PM -0500 01/15/2006, Laurent Daudelin's sig said:

JCL: /J-C-L/ n. 1. IBM's supremely rude Job Control Language. JCL is the
script language used to control the execution of programs in IBM's batch
systems. JCL has a very fascist syntax, and some versions will, for example,
barf if two spaces appear where it expects one. Most programmers confronted
with JCL simply copy a working file (or card deck), changing the file names.

ROFLMAO. Rememberies... Long time ago in a state far away, I was
working at the computer center at college. One of the freshmen
programming classes used our batch machine. The professor gave them
a sample JCL block to put around their card decks, that started with:

//JOB the professor's name

At the bottom of the instructions, it said to replace her name with
theirs. But we all know that students can't read! uh oh.

Picture it... The night before the first assignment is due. The
student area of the computer center is *crowded* with kids hyped on
coffee and Jolt. The flood of decks is so big, the batch machine is
falling farther and farther behind. Turnaround is over an hour.

We take a rack of cards into the machine room and run them. An hour+
later, we come out with the cards and box or three of printout,
rip'n'sort 'em, then give the whole mess to a runner to take the 'em
up to the professor's office -- because every job had her name on it!
The students are staring at us - the panic growing on their faces ...

A. JCL. Gotta love it.

because of my hardware. Mostly my connection is handier so I use
mine. I also have an unencrypted network. She could log onto mine if
her ISP gets goofy. I don't think she knows that.

But the legalities of exactly who owns bandwidth are undefined.

No, they're not. The bandwidth is owned by the ISP. You're
permitted to use it based on the limitations set in the AUP/TOS.

AUP = Acceptable Use Policy
TOS = Terms of Service

For instance let's say that I pay an outrageous fee for my
connection, which I do, but I need to go on a little trip and while
visiting relatives I find an unencrypted access point that connects
to my original comcast ISP. Am I stealing bandwidth to use it? I
would be doing the same stuff at home but ...

In the case of Comcast... Sharing your connection beyond your
premises is Theft Of Services. Using a Comcast connection that
someone has left open is Theft Of Services. Being a Comcast customer
in one area does not give you carte blanche to jack in anywhere.

And what is the situation of my own home use? I have 4 Macs and a
printer all clawing their way to my router. Sometimes, like during
Christmas when my girls are home with their own laptops, I have
five. It's all my own family. I still pay rent for all these kids.

Woohoo! Kids that you can return when the lease expires! This is
why I don't mind babysitting -- you get to give them back when they
get cranky! :)

Why shouldn't they be able to use my WAN the way they can use the
heat inside my house?

You mean yer LAN. Even with a wireless hop, it's still local.

They should, do, and are permitted per the Comcast agreements.
Comcast will not provide technical support your LAN, unless you pay
for that support. But you're certainly allowed to fill your home
with your kids (leased or owned) and their equipment.

...I remember the early @Home days, when in many areas the TOS
specifically stated you could not use NAT. To connect multiple
computers, you had to purchase an individual IP for each, for a few
bucks per month. Entre the Bells and xDSL - who permitted NAT. The
pressure made @Home change their policy. Havoc then occured in some
areas because the MSOs had used the 192.168/16 block for some of
their intranet (local routers and such)... it made routing
interesting when customers misconfigured their home routers!

And why should the woman next door, who has one, maybe two computers
and no family be paying the same rate I pay? Is she getting ripped
off? I kind of think so.

She has the same service level caps that you do. She can use the
same amount of bandwidth as you. So of course she should pay the
same. Same goes for her phone line, sewer, water, gas, and electric
hookups. +/- metering.

Beware them people what live alone. They're often the heavy gamers
or p2p'ers that eat all the upstream bandwidth on your drop!

I have also gone down the block to a free internet zone sponsored by
the city and connected there. Sometimes I go to the library and they
have open connections. Is it somehow unfair use that my neighbor
can't take her PC downtown and connect with it? She pays the same
taxes I pay.

Why can't she take her PC downtown?

I know someone who borrows her neighbor's wireless connection for
free. He knows about it. She admits it would be better if she got
her own.

Interesting ethos there. If you saw two people steal merchandise
worth, say $45, each month, don't you have an obligation to report
them? And if you keep mum about it, doesn't that make you liable as
part of their criminal conspiracy?

Oh there are just sooo many annoying things you could do to this
person. Change your SSID to a racial slur. Change it to something
that pokes her politics.

This was just one concern I had about my neighbour and her brother
having access to my network.

Very real concerns.

You've heard of Spam Vans? Spammers that outfit a vehicle with
equipment, then drive around looking for access... Originally, they
were going to small ISPs and offering them $5K cash for a cat5 hookup
for a day. When the ISPs caught on to the blacklist nightmares that
caused, the spammers went wireless and started wardriving...

As for 2 unrelated persons sharing an apartment - In most cases,
tenants will share the cost of the service and both have legal
access to it. As long as this is permitted by the ISP, it's legal.
Most ISP's allow this as many families will have multiple computers
and want internet access for all of them.

To take this a step further... I had a great experience with Comcast
a year ago... A friend's son wanted to have his buddies over to play
some game over the 'net. A dozen computers, etc. He drafted me to
help set up the LAN to handle it. Then the boy started complaining
that the Comcast hookup wasn't fast enough for all those people. So
we contacted Comcast. Not only were they ok with having that many
people connected to thru the one residential service point, but they
even doubled the speed caps for the weekend - and only charged him $5
for it.

An interesting question!

The latter can plead ignorance, to the ISP. The former cannot. Then

charges, etc).

I kind of like the idea of leaving mine unencrypted. I'm a bit of a

set a password.

Me too (when I have a WAP here for testing). But I leave it open for
nefarious purposes... When I see someone has connected, I try to
reach into their computer. ;)

For a prime example of what's really happening take a war drive

wanted to hunt down malefactors they could do it easily.

I think they have to strike a balance... The cost of the lost

I agree. But there's a big diff between sharing a copy or two with a

I think the same things applies to ISPs. I doubt they fret over the

Running == Open.

Yes.

I usually don't touch my Mac while it's going through its backup

Good.

Would you confirm that this is the correct way to do backups???

Yes.

Each application running has the potential of changing the HD and/or

You want the backup to be as complete as possible.

WEP is easy to crack in that you can record a session off the air,
then use some serious computer power to figure out that session's

IMO, set your passwords and let 'em hack you if they can. Just check

Is it illegal if I'm visiting a person and log on with my PowerBook?

Seems like a gray legal area.

Not gray at all. Service is typically sold to a specific household

In my first reply, I clarified with against your ISP's AUP/TOS -
that's the critical point. Give yours a read. Most residential
services have explicit no-sharing-beyond-your-premisis clauses. Some
business grade services permit limited sharing. Full off-premisis
sharing is usually only permitted when you get into larger business

Has anybody here had any problems with getting these two items
repaired under Applecare ?

Apple refused to repair our Lombard's keyboard under AppleCare, back
in the day. And their cost estimate was $400. Ended up buying used
parts on LEM Swap and doin it myself.

Not the PRAM itself. But some of the symptoms could be caused by a

Re: Testing internal modem

In the Remote Access control panel, turn on verbose logging. That
way you can view the transaction between the PPP module running the
modem script and the modem's responses.

If you see from the log that the script is totally unable to get a
response from the modem, then it might be fried.  Try reseating it;
sometimes that fixes.

You can also try using an old fashioned glass terminal / serial
telecom application to talk to the modem directly (issue various AT
commands).

When I was using dialup, I really liked using a program called PPPop.

In part, that's Jaguar. In part, your data is probably very fragmented by now.

Somewhere in the long ago, I recall some expert stating that every
2 or 3 years, one should backup the hard drive and then reformat it.

Well...

Formatting ain't gonna happen on an IDE drive. Apple doesn't support
that (and they're right - it's not necessary).

But you can zero it ... which writes and reads every block on the
drive. This forces remaps if a sector has gone bad. Better to remap
a zeroed sector than one with your good data on it.

And, of course, the reload after a fresh initialization insures your
data is unfragmented.

I am going to install panther on the iBook and am wondering if I
should reformat the drive before I do this.

+/- the above, I would.

Also, will I be able to use the same administrator's password, etc?
In short, is it more trouble than it is worth to reformat the drive?

After three years, I think zero'ing is worth the effort. And the
defragmented data will fly faster.

Make Good Backups.

Sorry to hear you had that experience. Regretfully, problems occur -
it's the cost of doing business. Consider that the fraud rate over
the 'net is only about 2/3 of the fraud rate of normal mail-order and
card-present use.

If you had used a standard merchant account, such as thru your local
bank, you would not only be out the basic money and the merch, but
you'd be hit with up to a hundred dollars in chargeback processing
fees. AND be faced with higher transaction fees in the future, since
you now have a history of fraudulant processing.

Paypal is one of the better card processing services. But just
because they're better doesn't mean you can relax. You simply must
use common sense.

Review Paypal's policies and procedures carefully.

Make sure the buyer is Verified.

Only ship to the verified address.

Always use tracking / delivery confirmation.

For expensive items, always buy insurance and require a signature.

When fraud occurs, work with Paypal to get back what $ you can. But
then you can also file an insurance claim and fraud charges, since
you have the signature. This is no different than what you would
have to do in a normal meatspace transaction.

software pirating and generally is a sign of their honesty.

There is no legal obligation to include the original media with the computer.

The original OS license is tied to the computer hardware. Failing to
include the media is kosher. BUT then using that media on another
computer is a license violation and copyright infringement.

Without the CD's the hard drive should be wiped clean.

I don't know about it being an indicator of anyone's honesty or not; what
about situations where individuals are selling their personal
laptops after being upgraded? Doesn't the act of piracy require some
requisite mental state?

Nothing mental about it. Well, except maybe the dope-induced IQ of
the legislators that wrote the DMCA.

Also, doesn't the frequently seen Buyer must erase drive after reviewing OS
pretty much cover any loose ends?

Original OS vs Upgraded by purchase/retail.

It's ok for the original OS to be on the computer forever, regardless
of where the media ends up.

If the computer has an upgraded OS then that OS' media (and,
technically, a letter from the seller to the buyer transferring the
license) should be included with the computer. If it's not, then the
copy of the OS on the computer is illegal and should have been wiped
before it left the seller's posession.

There is no such thing as reviewing the OS being legit, ever.

Right.

Media vs License. Two totally separate entities.

But if I install Tiger on more than one Mac in my home

Only company I ever saw handle all this correctly was Digital. You
bought a license for each CPU then you separately bought the media.
You could use the media on as many computers as you wanted - as long

I don't think so.

Microsloth's hired / authorized copyright police have eBay terminate

think they push for fines and such against private individuals.

Then there's the BSA, ?Business Software Association? The
international copyright police that are employeed by the likes of MS.
They go into companys and nail them for infringement. Then they
check the employees homes to see if what they've copied... Big fines

Where did you find that ? The original OS is a license issue, not an
ebay issue. If the OS license is not being sold it is a copyright
violation.

Pardon?

All Macs are licensed for their original OS. Period. You cannot
sell them without the license going with it.

Most PCs are licensed for their original copy of Windows. Likewise,
you cannot sell them without the license going with it.

IOW, there is no concept of not being sold with for that original license.

All of this is irrelevant anyway because you can put a Mac G3 or g4 on
eBay any day of the week loaded with OS X Panther or Tiger, Adobe,
Quark, etc. with no disks and it will not be cancelled.

Not true. Adobe and MS (to take two examples I've been hit with)
have both hired copyright police companies to watch eBay. If you
offer computers containing their products and no media license,
there is a good chance the auctions will be canceled. And if you do
it repeatedly, besides eBay suspension, you'll get a nice registered
letter from the copyright holder's lawyers. :\

I see it all the time and have filed complaints when they use the apps
as a selling point. Not one auction has been closed due to my
complaints.

As appropriate. It's not your copyright, therefore you have no legal
standing to interfere with the auction. IOW, when you see an
infringing auction, it's nice to report it to eBay - but you really
need to report it to the copyright owner or their legal agent if you
expect any action to be taken.

See eBay's help area for information on their Verified Rights Owner
(VeRO) program. aka the copyright police authorization rules.

The NJ state senate is trying to change the rules regarding cell

with a specific (Kyocera) PCMCIA card.

Lame.

Well it turns out they don't have any driver for the Macs for the
USB connection and will only support the expensive PCMCIA high-speed
connection. The Quick to Net USB solution allows many people like
myself to connect after 9 and weekends for free with no airtime
charges. PCers get this service. The only reason it doesn't work on
my Lombard is that it won't recognize the phone as a modem
correctly. I attempted to use the OS X10.3.2 built-in drivers and
got the phone to connect with the 3Com Impact Analog 14.4 driver but
the verification (username and password) fails. Has anyone succeded
with connecting a Samsung a650 cell phone to Verizons ISP service?
Any driver suggestions or otherwise?

I donno about Samsung phones in particular, but Verizon in general...

Their network is set up for the higher speed access. The slower free
Q2N service is done over the same network but with a limited DCE
speed.

Authorization fails because the network dynamically steps the DCE
speed down right after you tell it the username qnc. At that
point, your modem hasn't stepped down, so further communication fails.

The trick is that you have to tell your phone to shift down to the
lower speed (14.4 Kbps) *before* connecting to their network. That
way, when the network adjusts the speed, the modem is already there!

On a PC, Verizon's software does this using some funky codes sent to
the cell phone over that USB link. That software also resets the
phone after the call.

On a Mac... Well, we don't have that sophisticated driver capability.
Best we can do is send a few simple AT commands to the phone's modem
(via the modem driver scripts). So you fix the speed match problem
by using the phone's secret tech support/diagnostic/service menu
and permanently (until manually changed) lock the DTE/DCE speed to
14.4/14.4.

After doing the above change to our Nokia phones, we're able to use
Panther's Verizon Support (PC 5220) script quite reliably.

Of course, keep in mind that if you spoof your browser's identities

If it's inbound traffic, then it's one of two things:

a) ARP packets. This is the protocol that the next router upstream

If you don't want your neighbors to be able to use your service, turn

Routers always track who they're talking to. They do this two ways:
In its DHCP table, and in its route table. At least the DHCP table,
and probably also the route table should be viewable from the

Would other devices like wireless phones possibly make the lights jump?

yes. There are 802.11 IP Phones available that can do this.
They're currently a bit pricey tho.

How worried should I be, if at all.

Your xDSL contract probably says you cannot share the service beyond
your own premisis. So you're perhaps risking a theft of services

But more importantly, because it's your residential service, you
could be held laible for whatever the other users are doing -- file

Turn off file sharing on both machines.
Turn off AppleTalk on both machines.
Reboot.
Connect the cable.

Turn on File Sharing on both.

DO NOT disconnect that cable. AppleTalk's driver requires a CTS

down or restart using menu commands. It goes to the blank blue
screen and stays there. I can get it to shut down by holding down
the start button for a few seconds. It won't restart using any
software or hardware methods. I have to force a shutdown and then do
a cold reboot.

Repair the drive then repair permissions.

Make sure you don't have any broken shutdown items running.

I read Luis' post on getting his Superdrive to work again via the
Terminal by using cmd-opt-o-f and then typing eject cd reset-nvram
reset-all.

Not terminal (the Unix command shell). Holding down opt-cmd-O-F at
restart puts you into the Open Firmware command shell. Open Firmware
is the primary bootstap program, that runs out of your Mac's Boot
ROM. It manages the whole boot process (of whatever operating
systems you have loaded onto the HDs).

Leaving out eject cd command line, would the rest of the commands
possibly clear the problem or is the solution more likely by
removing the keyboard and hitting the reset the pmu button? TIA.

Worth a shot. Certainly less tromatic than opening the hardware. :)

Re: downloading Windows media player for OS X Tiger to listen to Internet radio program

MS doesn't usually play that game. They either lock you out totally
or something else failed.

Exactly what browsers did you try (incl version)?

What URLs were involved?

I don't know if you follow any of this, but evidently both MS
Intel write code to make their servers work slower and less reliably
with other manufacturer's hardware. This is one of the main
contentions in the AMD-Intel lawsuit that's ongoing.

Nothing to do with Intel. Nothing to do with hardware.

MS modified the standard html handshake that occurs between your
browser and their web server product. Essentially, they changed one
packet and eliminated another - streamlining the connection process.
If the browser recognizes this modified exchange quickly (only IE
does) then the server is able to establish the connection faster and
marks it as being with IE. If the browser doesn't recognize it
(not IE), then after a time-out, the connection is established
normally. This time-out has the effect of making non-IE browsers
seem slower. (Remember that your browser may open multiple/dozen
connections to a server, based on your preference settings).

Depending on how the server administrator sets things up, they can
lock out non-IE users at that point or they can slow down others, or
they can prioritize IE users, or ... well, many things :)

While this may seem like a sleezy tactic on MS' part, it should be
noted it's all controllable by the local server administrator.

1) They're talking about *fixed* holes. There are a number of

2) MS' documentation as to what's in their mass-patch packages does
not cover all that's actually there. IOW, there have been many
patches to components used by IE directly or indirectly that are not

3) Then there's the public nature of Moz, because it is Open Source.

Actually, it matches my experience.

With only a few major exceptions

early LCD iMacs - floppy gooseneck and suddenly dead pixels.

Mac hardware is MUCH more durable than PC hardware. Between my

got dozens of dead PCs. Fried this or that, etc.

PB G3, PB G4, etc) are ALL still working. In the last five years
alone, my housemate has killed three desktop PCs and a laptop. His
4th desktop just went to the shop yesterday for repair. His new
(1yro) laptop has already required repair.

Don't get me wrong... I think overall software-enforced obsolescence

Graphic Converter is good, as is iPhoto. Both will come with the G5.
iPhoto is more of a cataloging app, though the latest version
includes considerably more editing chops.

GraphicConverter ROCKS. Besides a boatload of editing and retouching
tools, it has a wonderful batch mode. It's browser is very nice too

your pictures in self-managed standard folders, then just drop them

On the GraphicConverter Yahoo! Group, Thorsten helps out with
difficulties, releases betas, immediate bug fixes, etc.

iPhoto is ok if you have a fairly small photo library and don't do
much image tweaking. Nice image browser. If your library is large,
tho - be careful: iPhoto has serious crash and data corruption
problems with importing large (thousands) numbers of photos at once.
My housemate is so impressed with iPhoto that she told me she wants
it OFF her powerbook! Did I mention that GraphicConverter ROCKS!

Re: surge suppressors revisited

I have to admit that the surge to my book was a big one. A bolt of
lightening hit near my house. It knocked out the surge suppressor
then continued on, zapping the printer, other items that were
plugged into it, and my powerbook.

ouch. I take it you're ok?

:( I must have missed the original conversation back then.

Power Adapter vs Surge Protector vs Lightning Arrestor.

A power adapter is a simple box containing a few capacitors, a few
diodes, a tiny transformer, and maybe a small fuse. It offers little
to no protection against anything beyond minor surges.

A surge supressor is a fancy piece of electronics designed to smooth
out (supress) the power surges that occur due to normal atmospheric
interference. They are NOT designed to protect you from near-by
lightning hits. eg: magnetic storm activity, power company foolin
around, one too many things plugged into that old bedroom circuit.

A lightning arrestor is a large single-trip device directly connected
to ground. It's purpose is to route most of a (close-by) hit's power
to ground. eg: lightning rods, arrestor boxes on antennas, etc.

Another thing to think about: Surges that come up your cable coax or
telephone lines. They're the #1 cause of modem death! Make sure
they're grounded properly, where they come into your home. And put a
surge protector between them and your computer too!

Bottom line: No matter how much you spend on surge protectors and
such -- if you're in the middle of a t-storm, UNPLUG your equipment.
Get off the grids!

Thanks, that's an easy to recall universal DNS.

4.2.2.1 thru 4.2.2.6 are Verizon's. Very stable. I use them quite
often, when Comcast's are foo'd.

If that solves the problem, then the issue is probably intermittant,
overloaded, or outdated (BIND software) DNS being run by the hospital
or their ISP.

Try putting the name server addresses in multiple times. That way if
a request times-out, it gets repeated. This is one of the
fundamental diffs between the DNR used by Apple and the one
implemented by MS. The MS one uses extremely long timeouts and
repeats requests for the hell of it. The Apple DNR is more to RFC
specs, which makes it less resiliant from an end-user POV.

Yes and no. MS doesn't dictate hardware or system architectures. So

Uh, waitamin. I gotta research, but I remember reading about
Microsoft maintaining a rather long/detailed specification as to

Oh yea. Google is your friend. Hundreds of pages, on Microsoft's
developer web site for the PC 95, PC 97, etc specifications. In
html, they have glossy overviews. For OEMs, they have hardcore
details in pdf and ppt. It goes way deep into the hardware level.
Basically: a PC simply must conform to their specs. MS maintains
full rights over those specs. If the PC doesn't conform, it cannot
be supported by Windows. It's all even updated for Longhorn.

Now, don't misunderstand my point here. Apple has the same types of
spec docs, they're just targetted a bit differently since there are
no outside designers. But because Apple is using these as comms
between their own OS and hardware teams, I think it tends to be more
of a living document ... that will be able to include the latest and
greatest...
