FS: K10 / K20D Batteries
5 batteries for the K10D and/or K20D. All 5 are used. One is Pentax brand, the other 4 are Impact. There is nothing wrong with any of them. I just don't own the bodies anymore. $9 each plus shipping, if that seems reasonable. If not, then make me an offer. Also, please send replies to jerome (at) celebratelove (dot) us . Thanks, Paul. I'll revise my listing to be more accurate. paul stenquist wrote: Your ad says that if the locking pin sticks, the camera and flash have to be sent to Pentax. In truth, the base of the flash can be unscrewed from the upper portion and the pin can be extracted. Also note that the pin doesn't actually stick, but the mechanism that raises it can break. Because alignment with the contacts is critical with this flash, I found that it doesn't work well without the pin. Tried it, but ended up reinstalling the pin. Re: FS: Flash, Grip, Converter, Remote Zoom Lens
To be honest, I don't remember. I do know that I got the procedure from an internet search, so I'm sure the directions will be easy to find. As Stenquist suggested in his email, I believe it involved unscrewing the base of the flash, and just removing the pin. By the way (Stenquist)... the camera and flash have to be sent to Pentax. In truth, the base of the flash can be unscrewed from the upper portion [...] I'm assuming you're correct here. Not sure why I sent my in then. My guess is that I either didn't figure this out until I got the flash camera back from Pentax, or I had trouble removing the flash from the camera with the pin stuck (ahem... I mean mechanism broken). Nonetheless, thanks again for the insight. Adam Maas wrote: If you haven't ordered yet, I'd drop teh 24-70L and get the 17-55 IS instead. Better lens overall and stabilized. Excellent suggestion, Adam. And it poses a very tough dilemma. I do like the 17-55... not so much for the stabilization, but for the width as compared to a 24-70L on a 1.6x crop sensor. However, the 17-55mm would not work on a full-frame camera. And so the dilemma is, do you build a lens arsenal based on what you *have* or what you *want*. My hope is that, with 2 or 3 more weddings this year, I can add a FF body to the arsenal (say, a used 5D II if canon replaces it and the price drops). Then the 24-70mm could reside on that body at its native focal length, along with the eventual purchase of a 16-35mm to complete the package... but who knows how far off that is (2 years? 3?). For now, the wide end will have to be covered by the K10D that I'm keeping along with the DA 12-24mm (which I haven't been all that happy with to be honest... maybe it's just mine, but I *struggle* to get that lens to lock focus). I'm also keeping the 20-35mm f4 lens as my around-the-house lens coupled with the K10D. In all, not a perfect solution (I am *so* not looking forward to shooting a wedding with 2 different systems)... but as long as money is still a prohibitive factor in the equation, such is life. It'll have to a gradual transition. I'm lucky enough as it is to be able to get so many components at once (though I gave up a lot in exchange, namely the 300mm and 400mm f2.8 lenses that were going largely unused around here). In any event, I appreciate the food for thought, and any other suggestions you may have. The new body and 3 lenses are already on the way, but returns and exchanges are not out of the question. Initially I was sold on the 5DII because of the video capabilities [my kids are 2 years, and 8 months old... need I say more?]... but with the 7D in hand (which was admittedly somewhat of an impulse purchase), I don't think I ever switched gears. And so now that you've made me stop and think about it, an older version of the 1Ds is definitely now in play as my FF of choice. Given that the 7D has itched the scratch of up-to-date video (and autofocus) capabilities, I guess you're right that the 1Ds would be the hands down winner with respect to image quality... and just about everything else. hmm. Thanks for the food for thought. The nice part about having no money left is that I've get plenty of time to think before my next purchase :o) A 7D with a 70-200 and a 1Ds with a 24-70 does sound nice, though. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT: Vuescan Software
OK, I am not the brightest bulb in the pack. I just found out that there is such a thing as Vuescan. Does anyone out there use it and will it improve output from flatbed and film scanners? I have an old HP Photosmart S20 and an old Canon 660 flatbed. Both work fine but if the new software would be an improvement I'm game to buy it. I have the HP Photosmart S20 buried in my attic somewhere and also purchased the Vuescan software back in 2002 when I was still scanning slide film. In short, the difference between Vuescan and the HP software *for me* was hit or miss. In the long run, I found myself sticking with the HP software. However, whenever I came across a slide that didn't scan well I'd try it in both, and there were definitely times when the Vuescan software gave me a more pleasing result than the OEM software. The improvement was mostly with shots with lots of shadow detail like this one: http://tinyurl.com/3hhvzb With the OEM software, everything under the falls was black. Mark Cassino also used this combination and I remember him being MUCH happier with the color renderings offered by the HP software vs. Vuescan. He told me that for him shadow detail also got a little better, but vuescan also made getting back to his desired exposure almost impossible at times (that's pretty much a direct quote from an email dated 2002). One big advantage for most scanners wrt Vuescan is that the software allows for multiple passes of the film for each scan. However, here's what I wrote Ed Hamrick (maker of Vuescan) back in 2002... The current version of Vuescan does not seem to support multipass scans with my HP S20 film scanner. To which he responded... Yes, the rubber rollers in this scanner make it so the film can't be repositioned accurately for each pass. Since it's a hardware bottleneck for that particular scanner, I'm guessing that's still the case with the S20. So in that respect (once again) I wouldn't expect a world of difference by using Vuescan versus the OEM stuff. K10D File Numbering
Just got off the phone with Pentax USA. My file numbering issue is still unresolved, so I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had a solution to suggest. Scenario: I have two K10D bodies, say Body A and Body B. Suppose they have the following # of images each: Body A = 5000 images and Body B = 9000 images. To keep the numbers on each camera sequential I have the MENU Rec. Mode Memory File No. option checked. Problem is, when I take a card from Body B and put it into Body A, the numbering starts in the 9000's. I guess this is good for some because it helps to avoid duplication. However... a) Body B is also starting where it left off (albeit with a different card) so I'm going to get duplication anyway, and b) Now I've lost the ability to keep track of how many images I've taken with Body A (because it always skips upward to keep pace with the cards from the other camera). For events, I shoot with multiple cards so keeping cards exclusive to each camera would be a pain in the neck, by the way. So far, my questions are: 1. Using the camera, there is a way for me to figure out the True number of images taken with either body? 2. Even if I reset the numbers to zero by unchecking the MENU Rec. Mode Memory File No. option and using a fresh card, is there a way to change my workflow to keep the file numberings exclusive to each camera? I guess I want the camera (body) to retain the numbering exclusively internally (independent of the card), but that does not seem like an option (true / false?) As I've mentioned, using different cards for each camera exclusively is probably not an option. Thoughts? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
K10D File Numbering
(Sorry if this breaks the thread... I have message delivery turned off so I can't hit reply...) Pat replied: I was led to a program called PhotoMe Thanks Pat! I'll give this a try. One of my biggest disappointments was losing the # of shutter actuations. So if that works out, then awesome, half the problem solved. As for the other half... guess I want the camera (body) to retain the numbering exclusively internally (independent of the card), but that does not seem like an option (true / false?) ... The jury is still out. Derby mentioned Cards are cheap enough. Buy a couple and keep them with the camera? You must've missed the part when I said I rather not. Once I get the numbering back in order via Pat's suggestion, exclusive cards *would* solve it, but quite frankly I have enough stuff to keep track of these days. I rather not add which card goes with which camera to that list. Plus when shooting a wedding, event, etc., I just grab and load (over and over again). My preference would be to keep that workflow as simple as possible (i.e., one less thing to color code / coordinate). Lastly, D Brooks said... If you format the cards in the camera, do they not then carry on with the numbering for that specific camera. Nope. I'm not 100% certain, but it seems like it takes either the internal number or the card number, whichever one is *higher*... even if the card is formatted. (I've tried this with formatting the card in camera and out [in a different body]). Oh wait... I just refreshed and see that William Robb replied You can download a program called PhotoME Sorry.. Pat beat you to the punch on that one. But! You've addressed the other half of the problem, and I like both of your suggestions. I will try deleting the folder altogether via the card reader and also switch the color space on one (I do shoot in raw mode more these days). I had them in different modes before, which may explain why I haven't seen this problem in a while (I recently synced them back up). Anywayz, thanks again. Re: GESO: Shots from 1st wedding
I just shot my first wedding too, and I had the same experience with the coordinator...she didn't leave me with any time to take posed shots of the couple after the ceremony. TO make matters worse, her mood lighting for dancing created a horrible backlight! Allison... you want to talk about lighting?! Here's how dark it was during the reception... I dropped my knife on the floor while eating and could not find it! I had to *feel around* on the floor before I eventually found it. I could only laugh. Thank God for a good flash. Your shots are great, and after you sort and pick out your favorites, I am certain the bride and groom will be really pleased with your work. I hope so. Here's the full lot: http://tinyurl.com/6k7wfw I'm still working on the smugmug site (14 day trail) but its at least functional now. Jerome: Nice work. I actually like the bws a lot So do I. Actually, they're not fully BW, as I'm sure the purists on the list have already sniffed out. I desaturated down to about 90%, and for some reason I liked the hue it left a lot better than 100% conversion. But I'll keep playing with it. In the end (for the sake of prints) I'm guessing the full conversion would be best. , but my overall fav is 9122--the expressions of the flower girls/bridesmaids (?) are great. Really great there. Re: Shots from 1st wedding
To shoot more than that makes the photographer into a pest, and removes what little pleasure the bride and groom can hope to have during the day. Then I guess I was one hell of a pest! But as you alluded to, most of my volume was from two things: shooting digital and being a novice. Between the two, I took tons of shots that were redundant just to make sure I would have *something* that worked out. As my confidence grows, this will become less necessary. I still serve as an occasional wedding caddie for a seasoned pro, so I'll get to be reminded this weekend of the right and wrongs of shooting with style. Also, so many of my shots were from across the room, non-posed and/or inaminate objects (80 of the make-up application, 28 of the cake, 20 of the dress, a couple hundred of stupid details like church stainglass just because I had nothing better to do at the moment, etc.) that I'm not sure if the bride would've noticed the difference between 300 shots and 1000. Again, I guess that's a virtue of shooting digitally. Then again, there were those two times during the ceremony that she told me to get the heck out of her face with my big stupid camera. Just kidding. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: GESO: Shots from 1st wedding
These are well done. I'm looking forward to the ceremony and reception pics. In truth, (at least at a glance) those are the weaker photos of the set. The coordinator was absolutely miserable, which made the event very chaotic to photograph. Nonetheless, today is the last day of classes (hooray!) so I should have more time to sort through them all sooner than later. I'll shoot you a link once I smugmug 'em. To shoot more than that makes the photographer into a pest, Then I guess I was one hell of a pest! Sorry, no insult intended. None taken! I was being funny (well... obviously not) but I guess I forgot the smiley faces and whatnot to indicate that. As an example, one of the must have series of pictures is signing the register. OOPS! lol... you know what... As much grief as the bride caused me by not alloting time for wedding party shots, bride groom shots, etc; I will say that she was probably the ideal bride for a first wedding shoot. Her attention to photographic detail and knowledge of what I was supposed to capture was so phenominally low (she asked why are you taking pictures of my rings?) that I fortunately have low stress about the tons of shots I'm sure I missed (like the registry shot). Valuable lessons learned, with little cost. As I mentioned, I'll be out again this weekend as a non-shooting assistant. It'll be a whole different experience now that I've tried it myself and suddenly have a million new questions from a first-hand perspective. I'm looking forward to it. Re: One lens only...
Hate to be a deviant but... If size was an issue, then I'd take my FA 20-35mm f4 zoom lens. This by far has been my most used lens over the past 12 months (probably an 3-to-1 ratio with all others combined). At the end of the day, philisophical debates aside, the quality of this lens is reasonable enough that I'd prefer the flexibility over the improved optics of a prime. Disclaimer: I've only got 4 primes: 50, 100, 300, 400 mm. Hi guys, My wife and I are off to the south island of NZ in September for a couple of weeks. I want to travel light, and am considering taking just one - prime - lens for my ist-DL. Trouble is, I'm not entirely sure what focal length to take. I'm currently drawn to something around 24mm, due to its similarity to 35mm on film. I must admit I like the physical size of the DA 40mm, but I think that might be a little bit long. I reckon 21mm might be a bit wide, but a standard 50 will definitely too long. S... What focal length would you take? And why? Re: PESOs??
If it's any consolation, Rebekah, I empathized with your initial sentiments, but just didn't feel the need to chime in. For some, PESO has turned into PESH (Picture Every Single Hour) and it does become tiresome sometimes, particularly if the reason for sharing with such frequency doesn't seem obvious. But like everyone said, we don't have to click on 'em! :o) In general though, the response of the group has been eye opening for me as well, and I agree with most points that were made. And since I do enjoy the banter and spiraling turns that the list often takes due to the freedom of being unmoderated, I guess the bottom line is that we've gotta take the good with the bad (especially since we'd NEVER agree on what's good and what's bad :o) interesting comments from all. Really, it was just a thought, and I certainly am not pointing my finger or claiming I dislike the PESOs, rather, I enjoy them and often feel guilty I don't have the time anymore to comment on each and every one, because I know that each image someone feels is special enough to share with the group here deserves a comment and some encouragement, be it constructive critique or praise. However, my point was simply to mention that it seems our list has become increasingly flooded with images, and I for one, feel like an image shared for discussion should be one that is very special for whatever reason - perhaps a triumph, perhaps in need of some help. It may be that others take more shots worthy of contributing more often than I feel the need to share, but my comment was not designed to throw PESOs in a negative light, or to insult anyone in particular. Really, it was just something that we throw around here all the time - an opinion, and a question seeking others' opinions :) rg2 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Pets in your home, photos and fee
I wouldn't want to undercut pros that are charging reasonable (and I'm not saying they are) )prices. They are trying to make a living in a very competitive and difficult business. I disagree with that line of thinking. The open market is based on competition. IMHO, it's within an individual's right to charge whatever they want... or to charge nothing at all if they choose. It's not his responsibility to ensure that industry standards are upheld and that others in the same field of work can clear their desired profit margin. Quite the contrary, it's up to them (those who charge more) to justify their prices in a market when every tom, dick, and hank have a digital camera and are willing to give it a go for substantially less. I guess I believe that the photographers prerogative, quality of the product and demand should drive the price... not industry price fixing. An example of this is wedding photography here my area. If I can't find someone who wants to pay $1000 for my wedding photography services, then chances are that I don't have $1000 material. LIkewise, I know (of) several photogs that charge $3500+ just to shoot the wedding (i.e., no product included)... yet they don't seem to be the least bit concerned with the seemingly countless number of wannabe's on craigslist (for example) that are giving away their services for next to nothing. At the end of the day, their product speaks for itself: Pay my fee and get lesser quality. Whether by demand, supply, ambition, or plain old weeding out, the market will correct everything in the end. It's an interesting debate, nonetheless. I wouldn't be surprised if most photogs agree with the price-fixing mentality, but personally I just don't buy it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Anomalous Pentax DSLR's
What *did* bother me was the control layout of the MZ-S. I *loved* the overall ergonomics, but missed the dual-control-wheel setup of the PZ-1p (and ist-D and K10d). If the MZ-S had that control setup I *never* would have sold it. Ever. It would have been my film camera to keep forever. Funny you should mention the MZ-S. It took me FOREVER to sell it even though I knew I had no further use for it. I just loved the ergonomics of it that much. More to the point, as I was shooting today at the zoo with the K10D tripod mounted just a few inches above eye level, I was reminded once again of how totally cool the slanted top panel of the MZ-S was in such situations. It allowed me to read the settings and keep track of changes very easily from different angles of view. Plus it just looked neat :o) That seemed like such a slick *and* practical design. Help Needed: Sliding Bogen tripod legs
Set up in question: Bogen 3036 tripod with the 400mm f2.8 lens. Problem: I'll set it up, lock all the levers, and 4 seconds later the tripod starts to sink to one side. Whats happening is that the leg sections are starting to slide and collapse into each other despite all of the locks being tightly secured. On the lighter tripod I use for hiking (3221) I can tighten things up with the hexagon shaped thingamajig and I'm back in business, but that doesn't seem to work for the 3036. The latter tripod seems to use more of a hydraulic system for controlling the legs rather than just the screw-and-hold system of the former. So does this mean that the hydraulics are just shot and I'm outta luck? I tried a Google search but maybe I'm not using the right terms. I've also sent an email to Manfrotto, but I thought I'd ask here while I wait for a response. Any help would be appreciated. Re: Help Needed: Sliding Bogen tripod legs
Christine, Thanks for the reply. For my lighter, less expensive tripod (3221) I do have the tool you mentioned and know exactly what you're talking about... but that doesn't seem to work for the 3036 for whatever reason. The legs just keep on sliding... Thanks though. Hopefully Manfrotto / Bogen Co. will have some good news for me. Or maybe one of the big glass wielders like Cassino or Waller will chime in with a similar experience. ... ? Jerome: This happened to me on a different tripod I had to take it to the camera shop to have someone tighten the lever screws. Also, I don't know about your tripod, but it turned out I had a little plastic screw driver gizmo that was attached to my tripod leg, which I can now use (now that I'm aware that it's there) to tighten lever screws. I have one of those tripods from Calumet Photo, not a fancy name brand, but maybe since you have levers, this might fix your problem. My problem is now fixed. Haven't had any problems. HTH. Re: Help Needed: Sliding Bogen tripod legs
Manfrotto seems to have used a few different styles of leg lock on that tripod, and frankly, they all are crap So... what your saying is that your a huge fan of Bogen tripods, eh? LOL... Thanks though. You hit it on the head... The flip lever style of lock will barely hold the weight of the tripod when new snip I guess that's the type I'm talking about, and the other one is the snap lock that you mentioned. Or do I still have it backwards? sigh Anyway, I see your point either way: Your vote is for a different tripod altogether. Can't say I have the money now (just got the two new DA* lenses) but I'll keep that in mind. Either way, the damn thing is supposed to hold up to 26 pounds... so it's a little frustrating that it can't do what it's supposed to (but then I guess that's your point). either the 028, which is a very heavy beast, I cannot even fathom getting a HEAVIER tripod than I already own. Re: Help Needed: Sliding Bogen tripod legs
I don't recall what Ken uses, I think he changed tripods since I met him. I use a Zone VI Standard wood tripod under a Wimberley gimbal head with my 600mm lens. It is an excellent combination, though it is by no means light. Wimberley. (envious sigh). One day I'll try one of those things. Problem is, I use the 400mm so infrequently that I can barely justify buying a lens cloth for it, let alone a new tripod or head. I think today was the first time I used it in about 4 years, if not longer. Travel would be minimal, we are still a small town, but i feel it would be appropriate for my experience, and sense of fair play, that a rate of $50-60 for an hour shoot, and put a CD together add another $50-60 for time, PS work, maybe a bit more for a musical slideshow etc.. Am i in the ball park out am i way out of line to start off It's *your* ballpark. Charge what you want! That's the beauty of not being a pro in my humble opinion. You've got no bills to pay with this cash, so charge what you feel comfortable with. This way everyone is happy. If they accept the price, then you'll feel compensated and they'll get their product. From there, based on demand and your desire to continue, work your price up (or down) as you see fit. Re: Pentax good deed for Easter Sunday
Dave, you did better than me. I saw two women with a couple of K-something digital bodies at the zoo on Saturday but didn't bother to speak. Evidently my wife understands the Pentax Brotherhood better than I do. For one, she's the one that spotted the cameras, and secondly as we passed by she asked me quizzically, Aren't you going to say something?!... I guess I didn't fulfill my pdml obligations or something. oh well. How many lashes do I get? My dressage show was over this past weekend. Sunday was not busy at all. Riders from 7:30 to 10:15 and we were done. One of the riders husband was shooting her and her friend, which is fine with me, and i saw he had a Pentax Dslr. I asked if it was the K1000 or K10D. K1000 was his reply. Oh you know this camera. I replied i have been using Pentax since 1971. Oh maybe you can help me here. He asked a large number of how to do questions in between riders, and i am happy to say was able to answer them all:-) I told him how i was shooting, settings, keeping the back lite window out of the shots. Re: The psychology of fanbois
After fixing a camera and a card reader which each had their CF pins bent from having a card shoved in less-than-perfectly, I can say that I'd rather repair a $20 card than a $900 camera though.IMO, CF is far less robust than SD in the hands of the average user. Been there, done that. In 2004, I had to send an ist-D to Colorado for repair due to bent CF pins. The mistake cost me $134.70 in repairs (plus shipping). With that in mind, i was ecstatic to switch to SD cards with the K10-D. Also as an aside, FWIW, numerous retailers have Sandisk cards essentially on sale. 4GB extreme III @ 49.99, minus rebate equates to about $15 a card. I've picked up 4 already. Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass
I'm trying to figure out if the new Pentax DA* 16-50mm and 50-135mm lenses are worthy replacements for my Sigma 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. All four lenses have a max. aperture of f2.8. All would be used on K10D bodies. I've had the former two lenses for about 5 years now (since the MZ-S that I no longer have) and am thinking that it's time to get something better mated (?) with the digital bodies I own. Re: Pentax vs. Sigma Fast Glass
Thanks to all who replied. David Savage probably had me convinced immediately with his comments of: what's the point of owning Pentax if you're not going to get the one part of the system that they do exceptionally well. Also, to answer W. Robb's question of... why a person would put third party glass onto a Pentax Well, sometimes *price* is the driving factor, and at the time, the price of the FA* 70-200mm f2.8 Pentax lens was quite prohibitive. I've *always* wanted Pentax lenses in my kit, but until now the prices didn't make that possible given the speed I needed. Hence, brand loyalty is admittedly part of my incentive to switch. Granted, they don't build the new lenses like they used to (I think I could very well knock someone out with one blow from my Sigma lens)... but the DA* lens prices (plus gainful employment) at least allow me to consider these options for a change. Boris asked: if your Sigma lenses work for you - why bother? They do work for me... but since people are actually paying for these pictures now, my thinking is that if there is something better and I can afford it, then I want it. Boris also mentioned the difference in focal lengths; and trust me, that's a concern too. Right now, my wedding kit is seamless (Pentax 12-24 in the bag, Sigma 24-70 70-200 on K10D bodies) so these two lenses are obviously going to mess that up. However, the 16-50 / 50-135mm range will simply put me back to where most (zoom using) wedding / portrait photogs were prior to digital anyway: 24-200mm equivalent. So I think I'll adjust just fine without the long end (just take three steps forward)... as long as the Pentax 50-135mm is still very sharp at the long end (at least at f4.0, if not wide open ???). The part that I don't like is the overlap between the 16-50mm and the 12-24mm, but in the end that may be a good thing since it will probably translate to less lens swapping during a shoot. In the end, I think I'll gain more than I'll lose from the shift in focal length. But only time will tell. By swapping, I'll also improve on my minimum focusing distances a tad. So overall, I'm leaning towards the swap, but I still wanted to run the query through the list to see what you guys thought. Also, if anyone wants the inside track on buying my Sigma lenses from me if and when I pull the trigger, please contact me off-list. Jostein said: Remember also that there's a DA*60-250/4 Man, that's tempting. What would be AWESOME for when I eventually get back to animal stuff... but for weddings portraits, that's way more focal length than I need at the expense of an f-stop that I really like having. Still very tempting though because switching to the pentax lenses would leave me with NOTHING between the long end of the 50-135mm and my 300mm f2.8. That seems like a HUGE range of emptiness. ..emptiness that can be used to justify future purchases hmmm. Decisions. Decisions (ugh). GESO: Photo Shoot #2
Firstly, thanks to all who responded to my initial posting (Photo Shoot #1) concerning the wedding I got to shoot a few weeks ago. Since then I was so starved for another opportunity to shoot people again that I posted an ad on craigslist for a free photo shoot. I got tons of responses but unfortunately somehow ended up with a couple that was way younger than I anticipated. In any event, here's a few highlights from the outting: http://www.exposedfilm.net/mandi/ Comments and criticism welcomed. You guys were great with the advice last time around. All the best, Jerome PS... the website is under (re) construction, so please excuse the flash components if they are still a bit clunky. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: GESO: Photo Shoot #2
Wow... Great advice, Bruce. Looking through the images again, I see exactly what you mean about her being just a little too far back. Makes him much more prominent in those images than he should be. Well, with some luck, I'll be off to shoot another couple this weekend so I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again. Jerome PS. Thanks for the compliment, Marnie. The best part overall is that you were able to show some genuine spark between them. That is half the battle. When shooting people in poses (even casual) little things count. In the shots where she is kind of looking over his shoulder (several of them), it would be better to actually have her lean out and come around just a little more. His face obscures hers just a little too much. Basically you are tying to put the faces on about the same plane. It also helps for relative sizes of the faces. A little more like this: http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/kuresa_0050a.htm http://www.daytonphoto.com/Galleries/Steele/steele_0391.htm The third shot - what I call the near/far shot seems a little disjointed - basically two people showing no interest in each other. I would usually have the far one look at the near one in some kind of loving gaze like this: http://www.daytonphoto.com/Galleries/Latham/latham_0314.htm http://www.daytonphoto.com/Galleries/Bullock/bullock_0127.htm Remember that there is no single way to do things. Wedding Experience (long)
[impatient? scroll down for the link] I shot my first wedding this past Saturday. Luckily, I was *not* the paid wedding photographer. Instead, some friends of mine who have a videography company let me tag along under the guise of their still-shot assistant. In any event, I thought I'd share my experience in hopes of any helpful comments, criticisms, etc. Long story short, I learned that I am not ready for prime time just yet. But the practice was invaluable. To state the obvious: shooting a real wedding was a whole lot different than sitting around the house thinking about it! And getting practice in a situation where there was almost no pressure was great0, especially given the fact that I'm not all that thrilled with the results. If I was getting paid as the main photographer, I would definitely be stressing right now over the quality of the pictures. But one thing I will say is that I LEARNED A LOT!! For example... 1. My autofocus is WAY too slow. FYI, I shot with 2 K10D's, a sigma 70-200mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8, and the Pentax 12-24 lens. Granted Pentax is known for having slower autofocus than Canon and Nikon (begin debate here)... but I've never seen this become a huge factor until Saturday... maybe because I mostly take pictures of waterfalls, landscapes, and my son who can't walk or crawl yet. Anyway, I missed a lot of shots while the camera hunted for something to focus on. And many of the shots I did fire off were blurry beyond salvaging due to my shutter speed being too slow. In the end, I ended up having to switch to manual focus for almost everything just for insurance purposes. 2. My #1 objective was to not be seen or be a distraction to the other photographer, and with that I thought I could get away with not using flash for the entire ceremony. Big mistake. This particular church is on television almost every day, and so they have great tv lighting. I did some test shots the night before and the light temp seemed perfect w/o a flash. Well, I don't know what happened from one day to the next, but all of my photos in the sanctuary came out with the worst reddish yellow hue. Example here: http://exposedfilm.net/wwsmith/yellow.jpg I haven't a clue how I didn't pick it up during the ceremony, but I didn't. So of course it was a fight to neutralize everything in Photoshop. 3. Probably the most important thing I messed up... I blew the exposure on all of the brides dress photos (d'oh!!). I think this is the one I would've got murdered for if I was the real photographer. Absolutely no detail in her dress. Just a big white mass. My guess is that I should have exposed for the dress and let everything else fall into place. If the tuxedos ended up pitch black, I think that would've been better. But a bride expects to see every trim line, lace, and bead on her dress in the photos. So I messed up big time on this one. According to all of my photos, the bride just had on a big bright white sheet. But the tuxedos look sharp! (ha) 4. This is the only one that I couldn't do anything about. Being 5th in line behind 3 videographers and a paid photographer, I didn't want to move around too much, so my angles were limited. To be honest, even the paid photographer was in a number of spots that I don't think I would've been comfortable in (seemed a little intrusive). The funny part is, I've got about 5 shots that would've been great... but they've all got some body part of the other photographer in them (head, arm, shoulder, etc.) It's actually kinda funny. But hey, at least I know I stayed out of his way. 5. My flash recycle time was unbearable. I used the AF 540FGZ on both bodies, and switched batteries on each one during the wedding. I missed SO MANY shots because the flash was recharging. The first thing I did on Sunday was to order the Power Pack III from BH. Hopefully that will make a huge difference the next time around (which is next Saturday, I think). Obviously I really need two, but alas there *is* a budget. And without further ado, here are the wee bit of keepers I managed to salvage from the shoot. As always comments and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged. http://exposedfilm.net/wwsmith I'm looking forward to my next opportunity to see if I improve. Thanks for reading. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: Wedding Experience (long)
Your first wedding should be when you are the principle photographer. Then you will be nervous as hell. Funny you should say that because I was actually thinking to myself on the drive over how nervous I *wasn't*. So yeah, the first real one will be interesting. I don't know much about the current state of videography. Do they capture stills from their video, or do your friends just shoot videos only? Video only. They typically connect with the photographer and just get a few stills from him/her for the DVD cover, etc. But photographers are funny people sometimes, so having their own stills guy hedges against that. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: Wedding Experience (long)
Jeeesh, Jerome - after reading your commentary I was prepped for botched up wedding pictures from hell... These shots are great! Excellent eye, excellent feel to them. A lot better than any wedding photos I've ever taken. Aw shucks, now you're just being plain ol' silly... but thanks for the compliment. I guess I know what I *want* the photos to look like, so I know I've got some work to do. Did you try pre-focusing? Like when they are walking down the aisle, just pre-focus to the 2nd or 3rd pew row back and shoot when they hit that point. Nope, didn't try that. Will definitely keep it in mind though. The worst part about manually focusing was that my view finder got fogged up a couple of times (my own hot air I suppose), so I was stuck firing the camera and just hoping for the best. Why not shoot RAW? Stupidity :o) I was also a little worried about card capacity, but I didn't even fill my two in-camera cards, and I had two more on standby inside each grip. So next time I'll shoot RAW. Lesson learned. A 'real' wedding photographer would never use the words bride and big white mass in the same paragraph... :-) HAR! What ISO and F stop where you using? ISO 800 @ about F4.5, which proved to be too shallow more often than not. My shutter speed was usually around 1/40 or so. Like I said - great shots! Thanks again. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: Wedding Experience (long)
Thanks to all who replied. From your responses, I've gained a good amount of advisement for my next time out. They all seem obvious once you hear them, but they were *obviously* the very things I overlooked... 1. Use RAW, you idiot! Now that I'm comfortable with Bridge and Photoshop I sincerely have no reason not to do so. I also bought 2 back up SD cards (for a total of 4), so I may as well give myself a chance to use them. 2. Autofocus Issues... Sorry Paul, but I've still gotta blame the equipment on that one. The amount of time that both cameras spent hunting was simply unacceptable. No buts about it. However ... since I'm not willing (okay...able) to switch equipment, it does sound like you guys have given me a couple of good strategies to try. I think Paul mentioned using Continuous AF, which I didn't even think of for a second (seems obvious now)... and Mark C. mentioned pre-focusing. I'm not sure if I'm fast enough to do the latter, but I definitely give that a shot, too. When all else fails though, I think I may be right back at Manual Focus for when things really start moving and jumping. Anyway, overall I just want to thank everyone for the encouragement. I was pretty disappointed with the results, but you guys gave me a lift. So now I'm looking forward to round #2 which will hopefully come sooner than later. PS, Brian, you are right about the posed shots. Honestly speaking, I *do not* look forward to the day that I have to set those up myself. That is definitely the part of wedding photography that I fear the most. In due time. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Epson Printers Revisited
My Epson 1280 is on its last leg, and so the wife was kind enough to surprise me today with an Epson R1800 as a replacement. With that said, I have a question and I'm hoping you guys and gals can help. I searched the web (pdml archives included) and 99% of the articles discuss R1800 vs. R2400, but not much mention of the 1280. The concensus seems to be that 1. the R2400 outperforms the R1800 in BW and matte prints 2. it is vice versa for color prints on glossy paper, with the R1800 getting the edge. 3. the R1800 also outperforms the older 1280 with color glossy prints but... here's the question... how do COLOR MATTE prints from the R1800 compare to those of the Stylus photo 1280? 99% of the time, I print in color on on Epson enhanced Matte Paper. I do understand that the 2400 is supposed to be the best option for this... but is the R1800 going to at least outperform what I'm accustomed to (i.e., the 1280)? All I hear is that it is not as good as the 2400... But that doesn't quite answer my question unfortunately. It has been a while, but I remember that quite a few of you had the 1280 as well and my guess is that you've since upgraded as well. So hopefully I can get some thoughts based on first hand experience. I could open the box and see for myself... but of course that would eliminate the prospect of an exchange. Help with backdrops for portrait photos
Between the pregnancy and the baby on the way, I think I'd like to invest in some type of backdrop / studio set-up sooner than later. Any suggestions as to where I should start? Brands, types, etc., any tidbit would be appreciated. FYI, I've done no research yet. I've only checked BH for an idea of what was out there, and between the support stands and the actual backdrops, I got overwhelmed, so I just figured I'd start here. Re: Help with backdrops for portrait photos
Thanks! I posted this to the list back in June 1999. It may help you out. Simple Background manufacture: Buy some large pieces of muslin, and sew them together to make as large a background as you want. Our studio has 2 huge ones that must be over 20 x 20 feet each. Buy a couple of gallons of latex paint in colours you think might be apprpriate to your needs. For portraiture, I prefer warm neutrals. (An oxymoron, I am sure). You can go fairly dark, but again, try to stay in a neutral density range as well. Mix a liter of the paint that you want as the base colourwith a liter of water (or thereabouts, you want it fairly thin) and paint the entire background. We layed the fabric out on a lawn for this (you might want to use someone elses lawn)Quickly take a squeeze bottle (we used a well rinsed dish detergent bottle) with some of the other paint, and perhaps one with a mixture of the two colours, and spray beads of paint evenly onto the background. Then take a big step back in time, remember tye-dying? What you want to do, is to fold the thing up and twist it for all your worth. This is definitely a 2 person job, and expect to get messy. Unroll the background and check your work. You may want more paint here and there. Our backgrounds cost us the princely sum of $200.00 each, most of that was for the muslin, which we paid premium for to get 9 foot widths. Cory... Oh, you got the K10 huh? You suck! No, what sucks is the extent to which I'm going to get taken to the cleaners for my ist-D on eBay. Last I checked, I think they're selling for like $6 now g. Geez Louise. But hey, it's gotta go so I can pay for the new stuff. Listed it last night, so we'll see how it goes. Should've been smart like Paul and sold it a month ago. Oh well. Anywayz, I'll take the Tri-x and, the Gold 200, if you please You can have it even though (I) suck, according to you. FYI to anyone interested, the rest of the film has been claimed as well by another list member. Re: How Long ...
Do any of the old timers recall how they heard about the list? I hadn't a clue, but just searched the archives online and found my first pdml message; dated December 13, 2001... which, I'm guessing, doesn't qualify me for an old timer g Nonetheless, to answer your question, Mark Cassino was the first person I started corresponding with on the list... but I can't remember if I found him via the list or vice versa. If it's the former, then I'd say I likely found it via a web search or a reference on a photo.net forum. __ Jerome Reyes Photography http://exposedfilm.net -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
(Almost) Free Film
I came across the following while gathering a few things around the house for eBay today: 2 rolls of Tri-X Pan 400 4 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 4 rolls of Elite Chrome 100 1 roll of Portra 160NC 1 roll of Supra 800 1 roll of Supra 400 1 roll of Ektachrome 160T 2 rolls of Velvia (ISO 50) Trouble is, I can't figure out how to load them into the K10D. All 16 rolls are 36exp. And (finally) here's the catch: The batch is 3 years old and has been UN-refrigerated pretty much the entire time. I wouldn't recommend doing anything serious with it, obviously, but if you're willing to take a chance on some not-so-important subjects, it's yours for the cost of shipping. Let me know. In addition to that, I apparently stink at hand holding just about any focal length, so the K100D and its SR feature win hands down for that reason as well. Re: OT: the leap to mac
Thanks to all who replied. The information shared was very helpful and much appreciated. Evan, thanks for the personal testimony. I will keep that in mind as I get through what will surely be an up and down transition from PC to Mac. Keith, I'm going to go with 2GB of RAM. The next tier (3GB) is another $500 or so that I really can't justify right now (I've still gotta keep room in the budget for Photoshop), so hopefully the former will be more than sufficient. Likewise, I'll follow Godfrey's advice about maxing out my harddrive space upon purchase. Again, thanks to all who replied. pentax extension cord
Has the F5P 3' Extension Cord been discontinued? I can't find it anywhere (i.e, bhphoto, adorama, keh, pentaxusa.com). I noticed one on ebay but it was going for TWICE retail, and it was used... I thought that was wierd, to say the least. If it has been discontinued, what's the alternative? At 9 feet, the F59L is not much of an alternative for my usage (flash on a stroboframe). For those who use mac (or at least have some knowledge of the systems)... any last words of advice for a first time purchaser? I've zoomed in on 20 iMac, 2GB RAM, 2.16Ghz Intel, and think I'm ready to pull the trigger. The only question I can muster after all of the reading so far is, is the difference between 2.33Ghz and 2.16Ghz more than the $250 ploy it seems to me? We're not even talking about a 10% improvement (?) Otherwise... I think I'm ready for the leap... Last words? For Sale: *ist-D Camera Body Accessories
G'morning. I'm posting this a day early because I have to make a quick decision as to if I am going to ship the camera to Pentax for repair or not. The built-in flash is not working. Once I pop it up, it gives a depleted battery display, and won't allow the shutter to fire. Luckily I never use the built-in flash (it was a fluke that I even figured this out), so it has not affected my usage. I do, however, need the money for other things now, so the camera is for sale. Other than the flash problem, the camera is in fine working order. The image count is at about 5900, and cosmetically the camera is in very good shape. Camera comes with box, literature, cords, cd, etc (i.e., everything it came with new). Asking price is US$450 with a CF card and shipping within the U.S.A. included, but I will consider any offers that come my way before trying my luck at ebay. Also, I have the battery grip, 3 more Sandisk CompactFlash cards, and an AC adapter for this unit. I can also include them if you'd like to negociate price. Otherwise, once / If I sell the camera, I will be looking to sell these accessories as well. Please contact me OFF-list if interested. GESO: Costa Rica
Guys and Gals, Here's a link to a gallery I composed from our recent trip to Costa Rica. You should be warned, however, that it is more of a trip report than a show of anything really gallery worthy. The gallery is huge, but I offer it nonetheless for any and all who are remotely interested in Costa Rica and have time to spare. All photos taken with either the ist-D (high numbers) or a Pentax point-and-shoot (low numbers). http://exposedfilm.net/costarica/ Also, the most recent entry in the monthly journal part of the website (August) includes my first photos with the K100. Literally as soon as the K100 arrived, I jumped in the already-packed car and drove to Shenandoah for the weekend to play around with it. All but 3 or 4 of the photos were taken with the k100, with the occasional shot taken with the ist-D. http://exposedfilm.net/journal/2006/06aug/ Enjoy, and as usual, comments are always welcomed and appreciated. Best regards, - Jerome -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: GESO: Costa Rica
Paul, Enjoyed the Costa Rica pics. Looks like a nice vacation spot. Expensive? Usually, yes (at least I think so). But we got both airline tickets (usually $800 each) through a combination of frequent flyer miles and airline vouchers. And the resort was thru the parents' time share exchange, which kept the cost down... but we still had to pay the all-inclusive fee ($75 pp, per day). Some truly excellent shots in the Shenandoah gallery. Looks like that iS is working for you. Absolutely (about the IS). I was telling someone else that those are the best handheld macro shots I've ever taken (and thats saying a lot since my macro lens is the oldest of my lens collection). I absolutely stink at handholding, and so I gave up on macro bug shots years ago... but this will open up a whole new realm for me, so I'm excited. What was the longest lens used here? IIRC, all of the posted deer shots were taken with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 handheld. All the bug shots are with the Sigma 100mm macro. Pretty much everything else is the DA 12-24mm. D and flash circuit problem
I hope Pentax will still repair it... What would you do? Repair or send it back considering he bought it about 500 euros ?? If he bought it new, then I'd say send it back. Why pay money to send it to repair if you can try your luck by just swapping for a new one. As for the problem itself, my ist-D started having the same issue with the pop up flash about a month ago. I haven't had an opportunity to send it in yet (just got back in the country this morning), but I think I will in about a week or so. Circuitry problems with the ist-D seem to be nothing new, in general. I remember when we got to fiddle with the prototype on Grandfather mountain before it came out (was that fall 2001?). The camera wouuld show a low-battery signal, but then when you turned it on and off again it was fine. The joke was that the camera was able to self-charge the batteries... Little did we know that they'd never *quite* fix the problem. Not so funny anymore. - Jerome -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

OT: Tent camping
Marnie, Off the top of my head here are some thoughts from my 6 week camping trip 3 years ago... Rechargeable flashlights and other accessories *seem* like a good idea, but they don't seem to last as long as when they're powered by regular batteries. They also don't seem to give much warning befor they go out. They just GO. Plus, remembering to recharge can be a nuisance, and the last thing you want to happen is that you run out of light when you need it, for example. If you're going to be in one place for a good amount of time, then get whatever size tent you want. However, if you will be on the move (i.e., taking the tent up and down every other day or more) then get a smaller tent thats fast an easy to pitch and break down. I personally had a HUGE tent, which was great when I was in it, and someplace for a long period of time... but as the trip stretched on and I stayed on the move, taking it up and down became a burden and I wished for a smaller tent to pitch. Invest in a good sleeping bag. Mine was rated for 0 degrees (F) if I'm not mistaken... but when the temperature dropped below freezing, I was still cold at times. I ended up lining the bag with a cheap fleece sleeping back from Wal-Mart. Worked out nicely. Also invest in a good mattress. Some opt for the foam / rubber pads which are okay... but I was gone for so long that I opted for an air mattress (my tent was that big). It was comfortable, but the extreme changes in temperature a few nights made it deflate some while I was asleep. So on a few occassions (not many), I had to wake up and pump it back up in the middle of the night. If you go this route, by the way, be SURE to get a battery operated pump for inflation. Most hiking trails are well mapped out and well blazed, so the need for a GPS is usually minimal (or none) unless your going off-trail (which I rarely did on purpose). But I did get turned around twice, which is kinda scary... but I eventually figured it out. I packed plenty of snacks to avoid having to cook every single time I got hungry. However, be careful in your selection. I did not realize until after the fact the extent to which most of my snacks (granola bars, muffins, etc) were high in fiber. Need I say more? Bring a Latern! This is huge. Flashlights are good for when you're walking or looking for something. But for area lighting in and out of the tent at night, some sort of latern (gas or battery operated) will be awesome to have. I changed clothes several times some days due to temperature drops caused by the elevation changes. Depending on where you'll be going, keep that in mind. Layers are good. Always have sufficient gas in the tank when approaching any national park. (1) you'll be surprised how much driving you'll do inside, going from trail to trail, and (2) they usually have stations nearby but they'll murder you on the prices. Be sure to do your research on park closings, etc. Given the time of year you'll be going. I remeber @ Glacier National Park, by early September it seemed like 80% of the campsites and facilities had already closed for the season. I also have to disagree with someone elses suggestion of staying close to the bathrooms since this is the most popular place @ the campsite. In my experience, the pedestrian traffic to the bathrooms, plus squeaky doors, etc tended to bug me @ night and became pretty annoying when trying to get some sleep. So I guess there are some pros and cons to being close. Photography-wise, I can say that I did NOT do a good job of making the proverbial lemonade out of lemons on my trip. When the weather / crowds / animals weren't cooperating, I sulked and put my camera away rather than trying to be creative, or better yet, just enjoying the atmosphere and the fact that I was there. It was fun being a photographer, but I didn't do a great job of also being a tourist while I was there, and so in hindsight I can say that I missed out. I hope that, in this respect, you manage better than I did. Thats all I can think of right now. If I think of more, I'll let you know. Here's the website from my trip, by the way. Yes, it's been three years... but I'm still working on it. I've still got about 1/2 the trip photos to upload. http://www.exposedfilm.net/journal/seattle/index.htm Happy Camping! - Jerome -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

JErome - I very much enjoyed browsing your trip -- Thanks, Ann. I'm glad you enjoyed. I wish the pics each had captions re where you took them easier to say which photos I liked best for one thing :) I *just* created the just see photos link about a week ago, so those don't have captions yet (sorry). For now, you'd have to scroll thru the journal entries in order to figure out which photos correspond to where and what. It is a big project -- YES! It is. For me the biggest two parts are the scanning (it was all done on slide film) and transcribing the journal (it was all handwritten). But it's coming along though. I hope to be done this summer. meanwhile -- wehre were you exactly when you too the last two of a mountain on the thumbnail page. I think the one over the lake is Reinier, right?
