My instinct is to hope you're wrong. But since Jobs has been known to

I also wouldn't be shocked if Leopard (10.5) dropped support for a

Well then. . . looks like the day is almost here. Guess I'm heading
down to have my Pismo fitted for a tombstone. I knew this was going to
happen, just wish Jobs would slow down. I saw the new Intel Macs and
yawned. Frankly, I don't care. It's just another give Jobs more
money scheme. He didn't make enough with the iPods, not enough with
the Mini. . . not even enough with the Nano. So, now it's time to up
the anti and get Intel in to help. This is a brilliant money move,
since now people like me; people who are satisfied with their older
machine that runs the newest of the new today, with be forced to
upgrade. I don't think I'm going to this time. I spent over $3,000.00
for my Pismo the day it came out. I spent over $5,000.00 for the
PowerMac 9500 (may it rest in peace) the day it came out. I believe
I've reached the end of computing altogether. Once my Pismo is
officially unofficial and is forced into retirement, so will I. It's

Andrew,

Probably the best thing for you to do is look on eBay for a stock G3
500 processor for the Pismo. I've seen several going on there for
under $150.00. If you figure that into the overall cost of the $150
for the actual Pismo, then it's not too bad overall. BUT, before you
consider buying a Pismo, consider this: The most important thing that
either raises or lowers the value of a Pismo is ONE thing: RAM. I've
seen Pismo's with a gig of RAM and just the 400 G3 going on eBay for
over $500.00 on eBay. . . WITH bidders! But then, I've seen the exact
same Pismo with only 128 meg RAM only selling for $190.00. I'd shop
more if I were you. . . hope this helps,

Lombard to Pismo is OK as long as the SODIMM RAM is PC100 or better.

Pismo to Lombard is often not OK as the same problems with the RAM
controller in the Wallstreets are present in the Lombard.

Wallstreet and Lombard are VERY selective about which 256 MB sticks
they
will accept, and most will only be read as half capacity (i.e., 128
MB).

Especially true of the later, faster low profile 256 MB SODIMMs.

Pismo will accept just about any generic SODIMM, even 512 MB sticks, up
to a max of 1 GB.

Yea have a gig of RAM in my Pismo for over two years now. . . one is PC
100/512 and the other is PC 133/512. . .no problems at all.

Hmmm. . .no key combo here. I think the success I had was plugging in
my flash drive into a powered USB hub, which was plugged in and powered
up BEFORE I turned on the Pismo. Also, be advised that booting from
USB is a Mac OS X feature. With OS 9, you simply cannot do this. I
booted my Pismo under OS 9 through USB but remember that OS X is also
installed on my Pismo drive. When I did this, I simply switched the
startup disk in System Preferences under Panther. Once there, I
selected my flash drive as the startup disk. Upon a cold boot all
you have to do is make sure everything is plugged in, then hold down
option which will give you the blue screen that lets you select the
startup disk. Any hard disk, removable drive, flash or otherwise that
has a system folder installed on it will work. For those that want to
see the differences with USB drivers becoming active sooner as compared
to OS 9 do this simple experiment: Plug in a USB Zip drive; in my case
I have an Iomega that's USB powered. Boot up OS X Panther or Tiger.
Listen to the Zip drive, and you'll notice it comes alive way before
the login screen appears. Now, boot up OS 9, and you'll notice the Zip
drive doesn't have any life at all until the OS is almost finished
booting altogether. Have fun!

compact flash?

Thanks,

Gerald

This is simply not true. I have a 256 MB flash drive, and I installed
OS 9 on it, which booted my Pismo via USB without a hitch. Whoever
told you that is probably in the interest of wanting you to upgrade to
a new computer altogether.

The trick to fixing this problem is keeping power of any kind away from
the computer for at least a week while the wet areas dry. If you feel
comfortable or know someone who can open it up to help dry it out, do
so. The computer isn't destroyed. The damage could only be the
keyboard. I've spilled Sprite on my Pismo several times over the
years, and yet here I am, typing this email on it right now. You need
to make sure the soda is removed from any internal components. I've
used water to do this, with the idea that all power must be kept away
from the parts for at least a week. Remember that with soda in
general, the syrup elements in it can be more dangerous to the internal
components than any other liquid. Once everything is dried out, put it
all back together and hope for the best. For what it's worth, I used
this method recently to recover my friend's cell phone, which had a
glass of milk spilled on it. Hope this helps,

Even when I move over and sit right on top of the airport express it
barely reaches the lowest extreme of what is considered a strong
signal. Strong being 70 and above. I'll keep an eye on this for a
while and try to see what happens when my network disappears all
together. I'm starting to suspect there's something wrong with my
airport express. It's been like this since I got it, but with no way
to be sure of it's performance (that I know of) I've always assumed
it was something else. I'll also try moving it to another power
outlet.

My condo has been wireless via Airport for over two years now. I've
had a similar problem that you are experiencing. What isn't discussed
as much as it should be, books, of all things, can diminish your
signal. My ABS (snow) was hooked up in the livingroom originally, and
my PowerBook spent most of it's time in my at-home office. The problem
I had was that the signal went through a wall that has a ceiling to
floor bookshelf filled to the gills with books. While this isn't a
frequency issue, for some reason, it will decrease the signal strength.
I was only reading an average of three bars via my Airport card. I
ended up moving my ABS into my bedroom so the signal goes through a
wall with very few obstacles. Since then, according to MacStumbler, my
signal strength is an average of 70 to 101. Also, you want to make
sure that there isn't any metal objects near your base station. Metal
is another less talked about interference problem. As far as 2.4 gig
home phones go, my phone base is on the opposite side of the condo from
the base station. . . a simple fix, with the kitchen not even being in
line with the wireless signal. The best channels, in my experience,
are 8 and 11. Good luck!

USB 2.0 on an iBook G3 600?

2005-09-21 Thread Zoltan Batiz

Hello all,

My roommate and I are going to be getting 4 Gig iPod Nano's soon. I
have a Pismo, so I'll be getting a PC card adapter that will give my
Pismo USB 2.0. As the new Nano doesn't have Firewire, using 1.1 with
the 4 gig model would be so slow it might be unpractical. But that's a
simple solution for the Pismo. What can my roommate do with his iBook?
It's got two USB 1.1 ports and one firewire port. There's no PC card
slot as is the standard with iBooks. Is there an adapter that can give
the iBook (son of Pismo) a USB 2.0 port? I've been looking, but have
found nothing. Any ideas would be helpful. And for those in the know.
. . just how slow would it be to transfer 4 gig worth of music using
USB 1.1? A day? A week? Thanks for any input. . .

By default NOTHING is open, it has an effective firewall (moreso in

(in Sharing Firewall Advanced check Block UDP traffic and Stealth

your friendly (or rude and arrogant as the case may be) IT person
about this).

Bruce,

Isn't is pointless to turn on Firewall protection if using an Airport
network? I mean, my ABS (snow) has a built-in hardware firewall. Or
is it better to also have OS X's firewall turned on as well? (Panther

MicroTech SCSI to USB adapter SyQuest Drive. . .

Hello All,

Has anyone tried the MicroTech SCSI to USB adapter? I recently picked
one up on eBay and pulled out my old SyQuest drive along with three
carts, blew off the dust, plugged everything in and believe it or not,
it worked! I didn't need the CD-ROM that came with the adapter which
made since due to OS X Panther having all USB related installed. BUT.
. .there is a problem. For some reason, when I pop in a SyQuest cart,
I get THREE (3) icons represented on the desktop for the one cart!
Anyone know why this is happening? I checked Apple System Profiler,
and it sates only one under the SyQuest drive. But, looking in Disk
Utility, it reads three. Go figure. I've just been trashing the
ghosts and using one and it seems to be fine, but if anyone in here
uses or knows anyone who has made the attempt to use the SCSI to USB
adapter with a Syquest removable cart drive, let me know. Thanks!

Zoltan,

In the last couple of days this has come back on for me.

The only change I am sure of is that I quit Macaroni (I had recently
downloaded this and am running on its trial mode). Shortly after this
I started connecting automatically again. I then started Macaroni up
again but this time no change, auto-connect is still working. So I
don't know if this had any bearing on the problem or that the timing
was just coincidental.

Any luck on your end? I'm glad to have auto-connect back but still
curious as to what the problem was.

Let me know how you are doing.

Dan-

Dan,

WELL NOW. . . this is strange. It's working for me as well! What did
I do? Absolutely nothing other than change it back to automatic
after reading your last post to see if mine would work! I wonder if
this was a timed thing in Airport. . . at this point I guess anything's
possible. I'll keep you and the list posted in case it stops working
again. THANKS! :)

I have a Pismo 400/768/40G/Airport card with a Belkin wireless router.
Using 10.3.9.

Don't know if it is related or not but it takes a lot longer lately to
load any Safari pages. I checked my DSL speed on one of those free
sites and it has not changed. Just got a new (to me) iMac G3
400Mhz/640/10G/Airport and it seems to be much more snappier.

Any programs that would cause this? Airport card gone bad? Trying to
think of the changes I have made... Anybody else out there notice
this?

Thanks,

Dan-

Dan,

Now see this is getting interesting. I hope we didn't stumble on some
kind of bug in Panther. I'm wondering if this is just a Panther thing,
or if it is something that would go away with Tiger. Keep me posted if
you discover a fix. I'll do the same.

Auto Connect to my Airport. . .

2005-08-14 Thread Zoltan Batiz

Hello all,

For some reason, after I changed ISP's, my Pismo refuses to
auto-connect to my Airport Network. I had to change my Airport network
settings from automatic to a specific network under the by default
join dialog. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but since it's
not set to automatic, on those rare occasions when I'm actually out and
about with my Pismo, I have to remember to set it back to automatic
just to join a hot spot. Anyone know why this is? Should I delete my
network altogether and just create a new one? Here's the specs:

Pismo 500/1gigRAM/Airport card w/ Airport Base Station (snow). All
software is up to date, with exception of Tiger. I'm currently using
Panther 10.3.9.

Thanks for any input on this matter,

Zoltan

No, it's a Wallstreet 1. Thanks

Mike K

Well Mike, you can always get a new LCD top half on eBay for pennies on
the dollar. I recently saw one for Wallstreet up for auction that sold
for $86.00. Just another idea. Also, have you checked the inverter?
The inverter is a slim board that fits below your LCD and usually sell
on eBay for around $12.00 to $35.00. Some people have said that the
inverter was all that was wrong with the LCD.

Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!

2005-06-16 Thread Zoltan Batiz

Hello All,

I just had to add one more thought on this subject, and wanted to see
if anyone agrees. After reading all the input from this invaluable
list group, and listening to the radio (Leo Laporte has said some VERY
interesting things when it comes to Apple moving to Intel on AM 640),
and reading all the relevant articles in mags I have come to a very
logical and realistic conclusion:

The proverbial gap between PC's and Mac's will not change. In fact, I
honestly think that NOTHING will change at all. Call me an optimist,
but the only thing that's going to happen besides faster Macs overall,
is that one day a PC user will be going over to his/her old friends
house who happens to be a Mac user and that Mac user will tell his/her
PC user, hey did you know that my Mac has an Intel designed
processor? The astonished PC user will just be that. . .astonished.
Then they'll go about their business. I expect nothing more, nothing
less. Macs will still be just above PC's, PC's will still dominate
the business world, and Mac's will still dominate the design world.

Anyone agree? Or is everyone leaning on Laporte's side saying that
this move is a stake in Apple's heart

My Pismo has been acting a little sketchy lately. That's the best
way to describe it. Basically, all of the animations in OS X that are
normally smooth and sleek, are now jumpy and quick. Not sure what's up
here. Maybe I'm being too picky? Maybe the hard drive is snagging?
I'm not too sure yet. Example: In Safari, when you select Print, the
window kinda rolls down. . .now it just pops down instantly. . .no
roll anymore. Any ideas? I'm running 10.3.9 with a gig of RAM and a

Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!

2005-06-12 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Ok, I've watched the keynote address, read all the articles. I still
think Jobs is full of it. I can't believe that he's decided to switch
to Intel. This has me really nervous. Intel processors, despite the
crappy OS that Microsnot tries to make for it, are very unstable in the
virus sense. I am concerned that when Intel based Macs start rolling
out in '06 they are gonna be sitting ducks just waiting for the
Intel-versed hacker to start shooting. I AM NOT GOING TO LISTEN TO ANY
OF YOU WHO ARE EXCITED BY THIS. THIS IS THE MOST DISTURBING THING I'VE
HEARD SINCE THE FALL OF AMIGA. I feel like I'm being let down in the
computer industry once again. This move will eventually make all
PowerPC Macs obsolete, just like the 68000 Mac's. . .so much for
worrying about the G3's life; heck now the G5 is going to be phased
out. I am so tired of everyone trying to get somewhere in such a rush.
WHO CARES IF POWERPC IS SLOWER THAN CRAPTEL!! I don't! And millions
of other Mac users don't! Most PeeCee users are too stupid for the Mac
community ANYWAY. I need to stop now. . .I'm so pissed I can barely
type. This is what happens when I go up to Arrowhead for a few months
on vacation. . .and come back to this. I have one phrase for Jobs:
Greedy Bastard.

Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!

2005-06-12 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Thanks for all the input folks. I wanted to apologize for my rather
intense input on this subject. Did I mention subject? For some
reason, someone used this thread for another subject regarding schools
and their policies. PLEASE don't forget to change the subject line as
well.

Anyway, what I meant about the viruses is that I do in fact know that
this move to Intel is good for Apple. But, I'm afraid it might be too
good. I'm one of those unusual Mac users that LIKES being a part of a
small community. I LIKE the fact that Apple has a small market share.
I enjoy watching PeeCee users getting jealous over Apple's technology,
only to get it eventually when PC manufacturers try to copy it.
Everyone keeps saying this is good for Apple, etc. Yea, sure it's
good. . .and the bigger the market share, the more we are gonna attract
hackers. I know the power of Mac OS X (trying not to sound like Darth
Vader); it's almost impossible to create an effective system
debilitating virus TO DATE. But, the bigger the crowd, the more people
are going to notice. I hope everyone can see my point.

I need to formerly apologize to those who use PC's and are members of
this list. I work with all types of computers in my business. I
customize wireless networks, create systems for people; both PC and
Mac. I just had a very bad experience with someone who drove me crazy
with his PC. Let's just say he's the one who's stupid. . .and that
some people should not have a computer AT ALL. I strive to be patient,
but for some reason I vented in here. . .my sacred ground with folks
who not only know as much as I do about Linux, Be OS, Amiga OS, Mac OS,
Windows and Unix, but even more than ME. :)

Also, the useful info regarding the Alpha chip is actually exciting.
Is this true? Are the former employees from DEC really working for
Intel?! I'm throughly aware of the Alpha chip and it had a lot of

could create for Apple. Everyone's going to want a Mac! (biting
nails) I just hope I'm wrong and the market share won't go any higher
than 30% in the next 10 years. Oh for those who own Apple stock and
are cringing at what I just typed. . .I have stock as well. :)

Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!

2005-06-11 Thread Zoltan Batiz

Hello all,

I have heard this now from more than one source. I was under the
impression that the rumor that Apple was going to eventually leave the
PowerPC architecture altogether was just a rumor. Please tell me this
isn't true. While this may not bother some Mac users, HALF of the
reason I even use a Mac is due to the superior PowerPC architecture.
Thanks for any input,

Re: Undeliverable mail: puzzing redirects

2005-06-07 Thread Zoltan Batiz
I ran into this exact problem. What I found out was that I had
incompatable fonts installed in my system. I had to boot Font Book and
remove all third party fonts. These fonts not only bounced my emails,
but also made Safari do some crazy things. If you haven't
installed/downloaded any fonts at all, then it's something else. Hope
this helps,

Trying to convert a home movie into MPEG-1. . .

2005-05-29 Thread Zoltan Batiz

Hello,

My DVD player, like most other new ones, will play VCD disks. These
are simple CD-R's that have MPEG-1 format videos on them. I'm getting
frustrated here, because iMovie3 will only export to MPEG-4 format.
This may be off topic, but this list provides me with peeps who are in
the know and might be able to provide a better solution to this
problem. I need to export several home movies into MPEG-1 video. No,
I don't want or need a DVD burner. . .as that's an entirely different
cup of tea. Maybe third party software? Thanks for any input. . .

Re: LCD vs. CRT

2005-05-28 Thread Zoltan Batiz

Claire,

I agree with Dan. CRT monitors still have many uses. Take me for
example. My main computer is a PowerBook Pismo. I have the Apple 17
CRT Studio display hooked up to it for web design purposes. With both
LCD and CRT technology at my fingertips, I'm able to compare colors for
some websites. There is a huge difference, especially how pictures can
look. With both, I'm able to get the best quality between the two.
If you have gamers in the house, they are better off with modern CRT
monitors for now. Dan's previous post on this thread best explains
why.

Dennis you are sadly mistaken. Windoze has had SEVERAL updates since
the original release of XP. Several service packs; as Microsnot calls
them, and so many security updates it's not even funny. I only know
this due to my profession, which requires me to know a bit of
everything on most platforms. The software update process for Windoze

Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-04 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello all,
I've been hearing a lot lately about Tiger this and Tiger that. .
.doesn't anyone wait anymore? I mean, there's bound to be bugs in huge
upgrades. . .history has taught me that. When I went from 9 to Puma
(10.1) I ended up going back to 9 until Jaguar (10.2.) came out; and I
didn't go to Jaguar until about 7 months after it was released.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that people these days just can't
wait to run down to the Apple Store to pop in the latest and greatest
only to find themselves slowed down by piles of BUGS. No thanks. .
.I'm happy right now with 10.3.9. :)

Re: How do you create a guest account?

2005-04-27 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Pacer,
Thanks for the advice below, but it didn't work. I've given up calling
it Guest and decided to name it Visitor, making the password
guest. This worked fine. As far as limiting use, the only thing I'm
concerned about others seeing is my home folder, which is inaccessible
when logged into a different account. So for now, I've accomplished
what I wanted to do; just with a different name. Thank you for taking
the time to help,

Zoltan
P.S. I tried creating it without a password, and Mac OS X allowed
this; but not without several warnings. To do this, simply leave the
password fields empty. Expect the usual security warnings, but it
should work. When it comes time to log in, simply click on the
Visitor or Guest name at the login window and it'll automatically
log in without a prompt for a password.

I made the name Guest (case-sensitive).
I made the simple name Guest (case-sensitive).
I then made the password guest (case-sensitive).
This worked for me, it might work for you.
Keep in mind that you need to supply a password or the system will
supply one for you.
I used the password as the password hint to simplify the guest sign-on.

Also, you will still need to modify and restrict the permissions.
I only set it up to use a few games (Chess, Marble Blast) plus
FireFox, AppleWorks and TextEdit.

Hope this helps. Let me know if it does. I only have one system
right now to test on.

Cheers,
Pacer
P.S. I quoted the whole letter because I address the whole letter.

If you actually look, you'll see the Pismo is right under the
Powerbook list. It's referred to as the PowerBook G3 (FireWire).
Even though the Pismo is supported, I've learned one thing about major
upgrades. Let all the butterflies attracted to the light do it first

your account. For example, DSL Extreme offers 25 megabytes of server

to how it detects networks. I'd like a program laid out the same way
as MacStumbler. . . except instead of detecting networks, is detects
other computers logged onto your network. This can be done by simply
popping up a DNS address or port ID that the computer is currently
using, then if it's someone you know, you should be able to re-name
that ID to whatever he/she calls their computer on a network. For
example, my Pismo is called, Zoltans-Computer on a network. Wouldn't
that be a nice and simple app.? I'm not interested in WHAT they are
doing on my network, I just want to know WHO is on my network and when.

The programs Steve and Bruce mentioned are very powerful in their own
right, but are not what I'm looking for. These programs made me think
about my previous Amiga days. . .which I don't need to think about
anymore; programming in Assembler back in the late 80's, early 90's was
what I primarily did on my Amiga, creating games for the Atari Lynx.
YIKES! It was a nightmare to say the least. Programming and hacking
are the two things that caused my nervous breakdown several years ago.
I simply don't have the patience anymore; which is why I switched to
Mac back in 1991. I fell in love with the idea that the easier an OS
is to use, the more powerful it is. I still have many programming
friends from the day and they haven't had a brain fart like me, and
they are pretty interested in my idea for this basic yet powerful
little tool to be able to simply see who's on and when.

Now, this is for Bruce. . .using the GO/NETWORK command in finder is
useful, but it will only show who's online when they are using a Mac
and have file sharing turned on. If file sharing is turned off, then
nothing shows up at all. I've noticed that a friend of mine showed up
the other week using a Dell laptop, but he had Windows XP's version of
file sharing turned on. . .something like network sharing or to that
effect. Not sure if that was even supposed to happen, but it did.

For what it's worth, I thank all for responding to my thread. . .who
knows, some day I may have my own little app. that will do this. Of
course, it will be freeware! :)

Re: Can I monitor my network?

2005-03-22 Thread Zoltan Batiz
On Mar 21, 2005, at 6:42 PM, Steve Fuller wrote:
You might want to look at something like snort or Ethereal for
monitoring your network for starters. Both will need to be compiled
for OS X, and will require X windows to be installed to use their
front ends. They are not easy to pick up on by any stretch of the
imagination.

Another idea would be to install something like nmap (another command
line program) on your powerbook. You can use some of it's commands to
locate all hosts on your network. For example:

nmap -sP 192.168.0.1/24 will ping all 254 addresses on the 192.168.1
network (a common network configured internally for people that are
using NAT internet gateways and the like). It will return a list of
all of the active IP addresses that it finds.

All three of the previously mentioned apps are open source. You will
more than likely need to have the developer tools installed to make
them work. A background in networking will help with deciphering the
output of Ethereral and snort.

It's important to note, that even though you may not have any
applications open on your Mac that you will probably see some network
activity on your network (even when you are not logged in). This could
be background processes running on the machines on your network, or
other miscellaneous network traffic. Activity lights that light up
just when they see activity on a certain interface are not necessarily
an indication of any heinous activity occurring on your network.
(Although it never hurts to check).

Very interesting, thank you. I had no idea that nobody has designed a
simple program that can do this. I guess not enough people see the
advantage of being able to boot an app. that will allow them to see
other computers on their network just as easily as some programs detect
other wi-fi networks. . .like MacStumbler. I'm going to be spending
the next few weeks on the phone with some of my more geeky friends
and see if we can design a program for this purpose. Who knows, maybe
I'll be a millionaire by next year! (One can dream. . .)

Thanks for the response, Bruce. For a huge subject, you are so far the

Our user group has a projector that requires a lower resolution than

I thought that this could be handled by using the Location Manager,

I think that the resolution is across all accounts. But you can have

The resolution is not across all accounts. When you are logged into
your account, set your resolution using the Monitor Menu in the menu
bar, as I agree with Laurent that it is a good idea to have the monitor
menu available there. Log out of your account, and log into a
different account. Set the resolution for that account accordingly.
Whenever you log into an account, Mac OS X will remember which
resolution the account was set at. My grandmother, for example, has a
17 flat panel iMac. She has trouble seeing the screen. Her account
is set at 800x600. My account on her computer is set at 1280x1024, and
my brothers account on her computer is set at 1152x870, while my
grandpa, who can barely see anything, has his account set to 640x480.
I did notice, though, that the login window will stay at the resolution
for the account most used.

Hope this helps.

I ran into this exact problem. What I did to solve it was connecting
without using Quicklink Mobile. Panther can work with a phone as a
modem if the settings are correctly inputed. To do this, bring up the
Network dialog box under System Preferences. Under Location select
either Wireless Internet Express or just Wireless Internet and
under Show select Wireless Device. The Service Provider, Account
Name, etc. should already be inputed, if QuickLink Mobile was already
installed. If not, call Cingular and they should know what info to put
in. For example, my account name is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The number
to dial is: 18472549270

The line Cingular gave me to the cause of this problem is due to the
fact that they are upgrading all of their cell sites to Edge, the
broadband standard which will eventually replace GPRS connections.
Hope this helps,

Ok. . .USB thought. . .

2005-03-12 Thread Zoltan Batiz
OK,
I know this thread isn't completely on topic of G-Books, but hey, I did
start thinking of it while using my Pismo system so here we go:

I was thinking the other day of the limits USB has, in the department
of just how many devices can be connected to one USB port. According
to the facts, the limit is 127 devices. Who, may I ask, actually came
up with that number?! Did someone in their garage actually connect 128
devices only to discover that the 128th device didn't work, therefore
coming up with the 127 number? Let's say that you used the Belkin 7
port hub to do this. In theory, you'd need 18 hubs, giving you 126
ports; still short by one port. That also means you'd need 18 plugs,
assuming ALL 126 devices are bus powered. Are these numbers really
just a marketing gimmick? Anyway, this is really just me thinking out
loud and nobody has to respond, but I'm still wondering about the
reality and practicality of these numbers.

Food for Thought. . .

It's not an arbitrary number. It has to do with computer programming

For the same reason that memory comes in multiple of 64. 128, 256, 512,

Pleae be more specific as to your problems. Tell us what it's not

Problems with USB hub and Pismo

2005-02-25 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello all,
I've been having strange power problems with my 4 port USB hub. It's a
Newpoint hub; generic brand I bought at Costco several years ago.
It's never given me problems, until now. I am starting this thread to
see if the other opinions here in this list agree with me that it is
the hub and not (gulp), my Pismo itself.

Here's the symptoms:
The system boots up fine, and usually there's no sign of any trouble.
But then I look over at the hub, which is plugged into my Pismo. This
is a powered hub, so it's got an AC adapter which is plugged in.
Sometimes, the hub lights are dim. . .indicating not enough power to
the ports. Sure enough, I tested this by popping a Zip disk into my
USB powered Zip drive, and nothing. . .doesn't work unless it has
enough power. So I've jiggled the plug in the back of the hub, and
everything powers up as expected, along with the dim indicator lights
gleaming back up to their full brightness, indicating proper power
levels. Is my hub going bad and/or AC adapter for the hub going bad?
Or is this a USB problem in 10.2.8? I ask about the OS X possibility
due to the fact that I've never had this issue as common in 10.3.7. I
think I'm just going to buy another hub and see if I can rule this out.
This is what I have plugged into the hub:

First port: Epson Stylus C84 Printer (self-powered)
Second port: Canon Canoscan Scanner (USB-powered)
Third port: Iomega Zip Drive (USB-powered)
Fourth port: Casio Exilim Digital Camera (USB-powered)
Anyone have any ideas to restore the power problems or resetting USB
issues let me know. . .

Thanks,
Zoltan

Roy,
Believe it or not, in my experience with Bluetooth or any other
wireless connectivity is interference. The key with Bluetooth that I
have discovered is the pairing process. You have to make sure there is
NO interference during this process. Make sure the microwave isn't
being used, turn off your Airport/wireless router, turn off your cell
phone AND disconnect power to any cordless phone base during the
pairing process. Now, the home phone and Airport/wireless router do
not apply IF and only IF you have a 5.8 gigahertz cordless phone and
Airport Extreme (802.11g), as both of these devices use a different
frequency and won't bother the pairing process.

The reason I said believe it or not is because even with all of these
devices running, the bluetooth will still pair. But, the pairing is
weak at best. A lot of people think that once a bluetooth device is
paired, that's it. . .but unfortunatly, that's not the case. Another
problem you are up against is your aluminum casing. I would call Apple
about this only to see if they might have specific instructions as to
how to properly pair bluetooth devices. I wouldn't be surprised if
they said the two have to be no farther apart that a foot, etc.

The best way to understand what I'm describing is to picture each
wireless connection as a layer. If you pair a bluetooth device first,
then that's your fist layer. Your second layer should be the wireless
network, then the cordless phone, then the cell phone, etc. Luckily,
with technologies like frequency hopping, this is a better approach.
My two bedroom condo is riddled with interference, all of which work on
the 2.4 gig range. I've got an Airport Base Station (snow), two 2.4
gig home phones, a microwave (operates also on 2.4 gig range), a cell
phone and of course, bluetooth. My PDA, cell phone and keyboard are
all bluetooth and have been paired to my Pismo via it's USB bluetooth
adapter only once. . .almost a year ago. I've never had to pair any of
them again. My good luck with bluetooth could be due to the fact that
it's via the Belkin USB bluetooth adapter, since it sticks out of the
USB hub, minimizing the interference. But I believe it has a lot to do
with my layer theory and paying careful attention to possible
interference. An excellent resource for all of this and more are at
these websites of which I'm a member and/or have contributed and
received helpful info:

Personally, I think it comes down to two things: The need for VRAM and
how much you have invested in Expansion Bay devices. Both of these
factors are usually the make/break upgrade decision when it comes to
moving up from Pismo. The VRAM is the only thing in a Pismo that can't

stay with Pismo. Plus, yea you can put a G4 into a Pismo, but only up
to 550Mhz for $289.00. Now for me, I bought my Pismo new. . .for
$3,200 and right now there is no need for more than 8Meg VRAM. This
came with lots of extras, but still. . .when my friends bitch at how
expensive Macs are I just tell 'em how much I paid for my PowerBook and
compare that expense with the new ones. If anything, the newer Macs
have gone down by over 50% in the past few years. Another example
(sigh) is my old PowerMac 9500. I paid over $4,500.00 for the damn

Bluetooth Mice/Trackball Options. . .

2005-02-16 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello all,
I've been shopping around online for a Bluetooth mouse/trackball
option, as my capable USB Logitech three button mouse is driving me
crazy with the cord always gettin' in the way. I've been looking
around, and so far the two contenders are:

Bluetake Optical BT500 three button mouse ($46.95)
and
The Ball -- the only Bluetooth trackball available by DVForge.
($89.99)

Anyone use either of these products? What are the opinions of these
two? Apple's Bluetooth mouse is not part of my search, due to the need
for a three button mouse/trackball. Also, for those who use either
these or other Bluetooth mice I need know which is best for battery
life, etc. I already have Bluetooth USB adapter for my Pismo and use
several Bluetooth devices, except; which seems ironic, a mouse.

Thanks for any info. . .

The expense is not going to be that high, since Apple can mass produce.
As I said before, I'd pay extra just to have a BTO for the features I
need. What would be nice is dual expansion bays and ports on the back.
Not asking for too much, is it? With today's technology, third party
companies would have a field day with expansion bays being available on
new PowerBooks. For the most part, in my opinion, a BTO means build
to order. What is actually happening though, is not BTO. It's like
buying a car with or without a stereo. Nothing is changed, just simply
added or subtracted. If I want a BTO, then I want a BTO. . .know what
I mean?

Re: Dead HDD in Freezer: Science Project

So,
Besides all these odd recommendations involving freezers and stoves, I
guess nobody ever tried actually opening up a HDD and replace the
bearings? Is this one of those things that's simply not done? Are
drives made in a way that prevents this? And on that note, wouldn't it
be cool if HDD manufacturers could make their drives with a little hole
on the top or bottom where the user could plop a dap of oil once a year
to keep the bearings in top shape? Just a thought. . .

The way I've got my Pismo set up at home, every port, with the

There's room on the 17 for this. . .instead the 17 just has odd

I'm optimistic though, and not in a rush; at the moment, I have no

While we're on the truth is stranger than fiction theme. Putting a
H.D. in a kitchen oven for a few minutes can also solve some
problems; at least temporarily. In days gone by, in some drives, the
lubrication on the platters and/or on the spindle would harden and
instead of lubricating the drive's components, it caused them to
stick together and kept things from spinning. That was known as
stiction. Baking the drive at a low heat caused the lubrication to
soften and reflow, allowing the drive to spin up again.
I don't believe that newer drives have the same stiction problem.

Safari still lags on https . . .

2005-02-08 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello all,
I recently posted a thread on this topic and didn't really get a
response. Safari STILL hangs on all secure servers. It has gotten so
bad, that I use IE for all secure transactions. Sometimes it can take
as long as 5 MINUTES just to load a secure page. Is there a problem
with Java? Bad version of Safari? Sites like Gmail won't even load,
my bank website takes so long that sometimes the server times out.
I've tried everything, re-installing Java, Safari and re-formatting my
HDD. I even installed 10.3 on my external LaCie HDD and after a while,
the lagging started again! I thought it might have been Airport, so I
connected my Pismo to the ethernet and STILL no difference.

Could this be one of the first signs of a G3 not being up to par for
OS X? My grandma has the 17 flat panel iMac with an 800Mhz G4, 256
RAM and her software is up to date like my Pismo and while there is a
slight hang, it's never longer than 10 seconds.

At a lose here folks. I love Safari and want to keep it as my default
browser, but if Apple doesn't fix this problem I'm going to have to
switch to either Opera or Netscape. Thanks for any input. My only
other possibility is Earthlink, but talking to their customer service
is like calling SBC. My system: Pismo G3/500, 1gig RAM. All software
up to date.

DVD playing on my laptop, and every new program requires OS X.2 or .3
, so I had to sell it, and with the funds I bought a Pismo.
Another thing, They have the BEST sound of ANY Mac laptop that I have
ever heard. Sound like a ghood quality portable stereo.

Hope this helps.
Macnifico

For what it's worth, Pismo 400 and 500's are going for pennies on the
dollar on eBay these days. Think it's due to the newest Powerbooks
just released. I would recommend just getting the Pismo over the
Kanga. While the Kanga is a great machine, the Pismo still has most of
what made the Kanga great, but Firewire and USB as well. . .not to
mention full OS X support. I just saw a Pismo 400 on eBay the other
day with 512 meg RAM sell for only $390.00!! Depressing for me. . .I
bought my Pismo/500 new. . . for an amount I'm not ready to disclose.

I missed OS 9 until. . .

2005-02-02 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hey folks,
Just a reminder as to why OS X is so much better than OS 9. The other
day, I had to do some file transfers and installs that required I boot
under OS 9.2.2 on my Pismo. After boot, I noticed how fast the overall
performance was, and how quickly some apps run, i.e., internet radio in
iTunes etc. I also had a flash back if you will, with the neat
sound effects in OS 9. That was it though. I quickly missed the
pre-emptive multitasking that has made OS X the OS that it is today.
For those who don't know, OS 9 has co-optive multitasking. This means
that under OS 9, if an app. doesn't want to comply to whatever the
multitasking needs that the user demands, then it doesn't have to.
With OS X, the app. is forced to comply. . .no questions asked. The
simple tasks I take for granted under OS X now made me realize that
Apple is on the right track, and I waited far too long to upgrade to X.
Just wanted to give my two cents on this subject. . .no need to start
a huge thread over it.

Re: Use External FW drive as backup boot drive for Powerbook?

external drive and boot off of that and copy files off the Powerbook

Can I do this? How would I tell the Powerbook to boot off of the
external drive?

If so, What's the best way to install OS X onto the FW drive? [note:
all I am looking for is a very minimal installation so I can just boot
it and hook up the Powerbook]

TjL

Simply plug in the drive, format it, and pop in your OS X install CD,
select the drive for install, and install OS X. It's a no brainer.
Once OS X is installed, you can select the startup disk in System
Preferences. If, for example, something is corrupted on your internal
drive in your Pismo and you need to boot from the Firewire drive, then
after you press power on your Pismo (make sure the external drive is
plugged in and powered up), hold down the shift key until you see a
blue screen where you will be able to select a drive to boot from. I
too use a 75 gig external Firewire drive for backup. Works great. .

I don't know what is happening. I tried the first thing you said and
that
didn't work but it sort of did. the computer started up and there
were all
kinds of weird colors and patterns. sort of medieval rug type of
colors.

then I tried the last one. my book is the large size 2 usb model
14.1 from
late 2002, so to reset the p-ram power man you have to press shit,
control,
options, and power together. wait 5 seconds. then start up. that
didn't work
at all.

the funny thing is. sometimes the grey 10.3 screen comes on when I
try to
start and sometimes it doesnt. it usually comes on if it is my
first try at
booting up in a while. like after an hour or 2. then the subsequent
times
don't work at all. I'm going to try the middle one next. this sucks.

What the hell could be causing this?? I don't think i've ever read
any posts that explain THIS before. Is he eligible for some sort of
ibook logic board recall?
Sounds like the logic board failure problem to me.
JR

Try this first before you send it into Apple and have to wait 2 months
before you get it back:

If you have access to another Mac with Firewire use Firewire Target
Disk Mode. Simply grab a firewire cable, connect it to the working Mac
while it's running, then the other end to the bad iBook. At this
point, press the power on the iBook, and then press and hold the letter
T until the LCD lights up, showing the Firewire symbol. If you can
get this far, and an icon pops up on the working Mac, be warned. .
.Apple may do a similar test and call your friend once they have his
iBook saying the logic board is fine and it's gonna cost hundreds to
fix. (friend had a similar experience.) If you CAN get that far, then
run Disk Utility on the working Mac and try to repair disk/permissions
on the bad iBook. I can't tell you how many times this simple
procedure has fixed many problems with my friends iBooks and PB's. I
recently fixed my roommates iBook using this procedure; (see thread,
Black Screen of Death) Hope this helps. If not, then at least you
can rule out any other possibility other than the logic board. If
that's the case, then check Apple's website 'cause if I'm not mistaken,
Apple has once again extended the Logic Board Replacement Program. The
cool thing about this program is that you don't have to be the original
owner nor does it even have to be under warranty. If, after they test
the iBook and determine that it is in fact the logic board, they will
replace it for free. . .no questions asked. (I now know three people
including myself that has gone through the program, so speaking from
experience here. Apple takes their time, but they do fix 'em.)

Is OpenGL user configurable? Or is this one of those background

I had clicked Use OpenGL. . . which spawned this thread. Have a

Corrupted installation, I guess. Have you tried to boot from the OS X
install CD?
-Laurent.
Not yet. . .sometimes the CD-ROM won't work at all. Not sure what is
going on, but there are times when the CD-ROM drive doesn't do
anything, not even when it booted fine. There's a slight pause when OS
X boots, when it looks for all connected drives, internal or otherwise.
When this normal pause occurred on the iBook, the drive did nothing.
After it booted, when you press eject on the keyboard, nothing. I'll
try to boot it up with the CD-ROM, as sometimes the drive works. If it
doesn't, I guess there's the Target Disk Mode option with my Pismo.

Great - Thanks Laurent !!

The only real need to zero all data is if you fear someone would try
to recover anything from your drive in the unlikely event someone stole
your computer AND if you actually had data that would be considered
necessary to find/recover. Yes, if you don't zero it out, it is
possible to recover data from the drive after a re-format. But, this
data would not be found by standard software running over it. In other
words, Laurent is correct in saying that zero out data is something
you really don't have to do. For me, working for the government, it's
a requirement to use the zero out option for obvious reasons. Just

Strange sounds of the iBook. . .

Hello folks,
Got a new mystery here. . .or not I hope. My roommate has the dual USB
14 iBook; a.k.a., Son Of Pismo. It's a pretty cool looking laptop
in general design, but he's been having trouble with it. First, I
suggested he replace his AC adapter as soon as possible since the cord
is frayed. The main problem he's having though is a thumping from
the hard drive area before boot up. When you press the power button,
you hear this sound for approx. 30 seconds to a minute, then all of a
sudden it boots like there was never a problem. I'm suspecting it's
the drive going bad, any other ideas?

The current drive is the stock IBM 18GB that came with the Pismo four
years ago, and I don't know any other specs about it (rpm speed or RAM
buffer size).
I am comparing the drive speed rpms (4200 v. 5400 v. 7200) and the RAM
buffer size, which are as small as 1MB or as big as 16MB.

I think for an external drive, faster is better, yet how does the size
of the RAM buffer figure into the equation? For an external drive is a
larger RAM buffer actually better or overkill and wasteful? Is there a
realistic buffer size where effective usefulness tops out and any
more is just waste?
For an internal drive slower uses less power, yet with a large buffer
there is less drive access. So, is there a peak performance
combination? Does a faster drive access less? And therefor is more
effective?
How much more effective is a 2MB buffer v. 1MB, and a 4MB buffer v.
2MB, etc, on up to 16MB v. 8MB? Is all that RAM actually used and

I am looking for the fastest *and* most efficient combination.

For what it's worth, hard drives are so cheap these days, (average is
under $1.00 a gig), that you could do what I do. I have a 120 gig
external firewire drive that stays at home. . .it's only there for

This way, (gulp), if your PB ever got stolen, you'll at least have the

Remember, if you can change a light bulb, you can swap your HDD in your
Pismo and most other laptops.  The Pismo, in particular, is very easy;
with the hardest part only lifting the keyboard up. The instructions
are even at Apple's support site via a Quicktime movie. It took me
under 20 minutes to swap the drive. Anyone charging more than $20.00
to swap an internal drive, in my opinion, is a con.

Have you tried Carbon Copy Cloner? It's at
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

Using this program, I have successfully cloned an entire drive,
including but not limited to OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.3.7 to an iBook using
Firewire Target Disk Mode. The result was a perfectly working iBook
that can even boot under OS 9. Try this as your last option at least
before you throw in the towel. Hope this helps. . .

I say try it anyway. . .Mac OS X usually changes during boot-up. And
if it does boot on the iBook, but doesn't have the resources, then
simply download the newest update and see if that works. Your iBook

Options with an external HDD. . .

2005-01-20 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello,
Just wanted to know what my options are with OS X on my Pismo using an
external HDD. I've got a 30 gig internal, and a 70 gig firewire
external. I need to know. . .can I (besides backing up) move my iTunes
music to this external drive and expect it to work? Can I move all of
my personal files to this drive and encrypt just that file (my home
folder) and run OS X using the home folder from the external drive?
For now, I'm using it primarily for backup and storing all of my
iMovie/Photoshop projects. Just wondering. . .

freezes. After resetting it, it stalls for a long time, then the
screen goes to black and we are prompted with the console! I've only
seen this once a long time ago with a PowerMac G4, but that problem was
caused by the G4 overheating (it was an upgrade card that didn't have
sufficient cooling.) Any ideas would be helpful. . .

This is the Son of Pismo, the iBook is exactly like the Pismo, with
the usual differences between a PowerBook and an iBook. It's got one
Firewire port, and two USB's. Sounds like he might have to replace
his hard drive. Well, they are pretty cheap now on eBay and other
areas. Average seems to be about a dollar a gig.

yes, there's an option in the iTunes prefs regarding location of the
iTunes music library.

Can I move all of my personal files to this drive and encrypt just
that file (my home folder) and run OS X using the home folder from
the external drive?
Probably, but this is a BAD idea. If the drive is disconnected when
you boot, you're SOL. The procedure for moving your home folder to
another partition or volume is shown here:
http://www.bombich.com/mactips/homedir.html

(note, this is more or less the process by which Apple was reputedly
ready to set up portable home directories using iPods in 10.3. It's
not seen the light of day yet. I suspect the less than graceful way
the system will handle things if the expected folder isn't there is
the reason why)

Secondly, if by encrypted you mean FileVault, go ahead, do that.
You're probably someone who likes recreating everything you've done,
over and over and over again. Filevault is a seriously bad 'All your
eggs in one basket' concept.

Moreover, when you put that on a removable drive, all your eggs are in
that basket balanced on your head and you're riding a 10' tall
unicycle.

Juggling chainsaws.
Running chainsaws.
Running chainsaws that are on fire.
If you want to encrypt files, Start disk utility or Disk copy
depending on whether you're using 10.3 or 10.2) and create a
writeable, encrypted disk image.

Store the stuff you want to keep secret there. Open it and close it as
needed.

Thanks Bruce,
The main reason I'm talking about this is due to my FULL hard drive.
I've got a 30 gig internal, and only 9 gig available. Guess it would
be better to upgrade to an 80 internal, huh?

communication isn't the case. There's no printing communication. Hp

carts. . .trying to say the printer won't communicate with a Mac if
there's no ink. (scam?) Anyway, anyone out there with this printer
PLEASE HELP. My grandma won't leave me alone! She spent $400.00 on
that printer (currently worth $40.00 on eBay) and I've always been her

also heard that for some reason, Fast User Switching causes problems

Safari still hangs on secure servers. . .

2005-01-11 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello All,
I recently posted a thread regarding Safari's problem to go to https
sites. It hangs for as long as a minute, then once the secure server
has locked, the site takes so long to load that by the time I finally
get into a secure server, the website times out. I have decided to not
use Safari anymore for secure sites until this bug is fixed, as with
Netscape, Explorer and even FireFox all work perfectly with https
sites. I even re-installed Java to see if that was a problem, but to
no avail. Anyone else having similar problems?
