To My secret Pal in England

Your parcel arrived today, and DH brought it down to work for me after
lunch - what a surprises, as ever.

The miniature bobbins are so cute, and I love the wee embroidery kit.
The lace on the postcard and card is mind boggling... definitely
something to aspire too! I hope your wee motif is as lovely. Thank you
for the doily patterns. I must get back to my pillow now my DD's
tablecloth is finished.

Your comment about conquering your "fear" of leaves is a bit of a give
away, so I may have worked out who you are before next month, as I can
remember your comment in a posting. :-)

Once more, thank you and I look forward to the final round next month to
see if my detective work is accurate.

2006-06-18 Thread Beth Schoenberg

Hi, Anne,

A couple of years ago there was a picture flashed around the (internet)
world showing a "ghost" at Hampton Court, which was photographed by one
of the security cameras. It looked like it was of a translucent tall
male figure wearing something like eighteenth-century clothes, going
out of a door into a courtyard or garden. The staff had reported that
they were frequently finding a door open after hours, without the
alarms being tripped or anyone having been known to be in those
room(s?) at the time(s). No one, apparently, had an explanation.

I was wondering (and it's always best to ask a local, isn't it? ):
Has there ever been a follow-up news story on this? (An explanation,
or proof of a hoax, or more and similar incidents, etc.).

Dear Secret Pal,

I received your parcel Wednesday, it was a sunray after a gloomy day.

The day before was so sad : I first went to the funeral of a friend, in the
afternoon I learned that my mother-in-law was taken to hospital and in the
evening our old cat was run over by a car. One should be able to erase such
days !

Anyhow, thank you so much for the special goodies that you sent.

The magnetized notepads and magnets are already on the fridge.

The sewing kit will go in my suitcase so I'll take it with me in Spain next
month. I'll have something to do during my free time after the lace lessons
I'll give there. When it will be finished I'll put my lace tools for
demonstration in it and certainly the little cutter you also sent. This one
seems really convenient to cut threads close to your work.

I looked at the postcards also. You live in a beautiful region !

I'm looking forwards to next month when I will learn who you are.

Thank you again.

2006-06-15 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hello to my Secret Pal

Well - the package brightened up a decidedly gloomy week! I have just come
out of hospital, after suffering the pain of a kidney stone which felt like
the Rock of Gibraltar, and fully expecting to have it all sorted! But -
right up until Sunday afternoon, I assumed they were going to blast it to
smithereens this week - then was told that, as there were a lot of admissions
to the Ward on Sunday and Monday, I would have to go home, and wait to be
called back. At which point they will repeat all the tests they have already
done, and make an appointment to have it all fixed .

We will see.

Anyway - as you can doubtless imagine, I was so pleased to receive the parcel!
The thread is lovely, so I am going to have to choose the project very
carefully to use it - I'll let you know what I decide. I am also delighted
with the little tool keeper - and even more pleased that you had obviously
made it yourself! The flower is lovely, and I do thank you so much - it
will be used constantly, and I will therefore think of you a lot.

The whirly note pad is great - we get through a lot of notepads in our house,
but I think this one is too special to use for 'ordinary' notes - only special
notes will be written on it. The tea-towel is delightful with all those
kiwis - it will be used as a pillow cover, so that everyone who sees it will
admire it.

Now - you must really be psychic!I was due to go to a Lace Day last
Saturday, but was in hospital, being dosed up with morphine (and what a
difference that makes)! So - my long list of needs and wants wasn't used,
but top of the list came a storage thingy for the beads - and now, thanks to
you, I have one! So - many thanks indeed for all your kindness, and I do
hope you are as lucky with your Secret Pal as I am with mine! I am looking
forward to next month, as I am so wanting to know who you are - you have given
a few clues but I wonder if I am correct.

Anyway - thanks once again for your kindness, and I shall look forward to next
month, to finally find out who my delightful Secret Pal is.

Yours with love and God Bless,

Carol, in Suffolk UK

To my awesome Secret Pal,

I received your parcel today - DH brought to work for me after he had
been home for lunch. I love it when he does that, it really makes my
day :-)

The bobbin holder is so lovely. I really love the bobbin pattern on the
outer cloth, and to find the bobbin snug inside it was such a bonus. I
love the colours on the bobbin - I am a big fan of strong colours. As
for the wee note-box and pencil, that is just so cute. I am not quite
sure yet where I will put it. it will be somewhere that I can see and
use it regularly.

I do hope you enjoy your trip to Greece and Athens. Cretan lace is a
needle lace, isn't it?

How lovely to be able to share a hobby with your mother. I have the
incredible privilege of sharing the craft of card making with my DD -
it's just such a pity that she lives a distance from us.

Once more, thank you f or you gift, it is really appreciated.

Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you for my parcel which came today. I'm glad nothing wrong happened
to you, just a problem with your computer.

I love the glass bobbin with the willemite in it and the little stone hart
too. In the village where I live there were stone quarries till 1960, no
willemite but blue limestone. Now the quarries became a natural reserve and
the house of the quarry master became a stone museum. I'm tourist guide for
the town of Ath and also for the stone museum, so this present is really
appropriate and appreciated.

The hibiscus pattern is wonderful. I just finished a duchesse design and my
duchesse lace pillow is empty. Perhaps I will try this one and the pin cup
will go on the pillow also. I have pincushions but they don't fit for the
little duchesse pins, the pin cup will be perfect.

The pencils are welcome in the lace design equipment and a little note set
is always useful.

Thank you once again for the lovely parcel.

My dear Secret Pal,

Well - another lovely package, and timed just right too!The card is
beautiful, with lovely words, so I will treasure that. Friends have been so
kind, and sent such lovely cards, and they all help to make an awful situation
just that bit more bearable.

The 23rd Psalm is one of my favourites, and, along with the other little card
'God is before me' has gone straight into my Missal - I am so pleased with
them both, and again, will treasure them.

The beads are great - I love spangling, and I very often get the urge to
re-spangle bobbins, so I will have a good supply of beads to use!The tin
is lovely too - I love collecting tins of all sorts of shapes and sizes, so
you can rest assured that it will be put to good use - possibly as a safe
haven for beads and ready-made up spangles, so I do thank you for it. The
chocolates inside it didn't last very long at all, so you can guess how
pleased we were with those ...

The thread is great - you can never have too much thread, can you!The
patterns I am (still) designing for my sister's charity tend to use the DMC
crochet cotton, so it will be well-used indeed.

Lastly, the little book of Hope is lovely, and so inspirational - I have kept
it by my bed, with my prayer books, so it is used almost every night!

Thank you so much for your gifts - I think of you each time they are used, and
I am so grateful!

Love and God Bless,

Carol - in Suffolk UK - where it is wet and not as warm as it should be!As
soon as they slap a hose-pipe ban on us, the rain appears - maybe a hose-pipe
ban is the UK equivalent of a rain dance ...

Hello to my Secret Pal,

Well - firstly, I think you were very brave to sign up for the exchanges when
you are moving house!Isn't that supposed to more stressful than almost
anything else in life - but it sounds as if you are coping well!

The package was delightful to receive! The small of the lavender even
before I opened the package fully was great - I love the scented sachets, and
the toiletries, and they are in use already. One of the sachets is in my
car, and the other strung over the lamp above the computer - it will stop us
getting stressed, I am sure.

The colour of the thread is lovely too. I am getting (very gradually!) more
adventurous with colures, and those muted colours I love. I will now have to
find a 'special' pattern to use it. The little pink bag is super too - in
fact, the lavender sachet is in that, in my car, so every time I turn a
corner, I am reminded of you and your generosity!

Now the ear-rings. What can I say? I am delighted with them, and am looking
forward to wearing them - roll on Easter Day!!!You'd be surprised - I love
the shell, and one of my class members toured Australia and New Zealand in a
camper van for three months last year, and brought back some earrings - but
she asked me to spangle a pair of bobbins with them as her ears aren't
pierced, and she very rarely wears ear-rings. I was pleased to do it for
her, but was very envious, as the Paua shell is so lovely - but now I have my
own, so I am pleased indeed.

I also owe you an apology for last month!I didn't mention the package of
'Mud' toiletries, did I.It wasn't because I wasn't pleased, it was because
they were already in my bathroom, being used, so thank you so much for them -
I sometimes have trouble as my skin is awkwardly sensitive, but they aren't
causing any problems, and are definitely doing good!

So - thank you once again for everything, I will hope that the move goes well
and in a trouble-free manner, and also hope that your SP is as good to you!

Love and God Bless,

Carol - your Secret Pal.

Dear Secret Pal,

today, when I came home, I found a very pretty envelop. It was so unusual,

knew immediately it must come from you!

The cross-stitch magazin is very tempting again. I love it! The necklace is
pretty - Did
you make it? I can't figure out the technique, but I really like it!

The pencilcase will help me to keep my felt-pens for the colour-code drawings
together and to see which are in place. :-

My children like the shapes of the magic towels. I asked the girls, not to tell
their little
brother what they are. ** At the moment he tries to avoid taking showers
and I
told him to take the little "thing" in the bathtub with him tonight. So he is
quite eager to

Thank you for everything and last but not least for your letter. I enjoy each

Hello to a very generous person!

I was delighted to receive my package this morning! and what lovely goodies,
beautifully wrapped, and with a lovely (hand-made) card too - what a person of
talents!

The wind-chimes are delightful - I am one of those who cannot go into a store
selling windchimes without giving them a try, so I am really pleased with
them. I will hang them over the window catch in the 'Lace Place' so that
every breath of wind will activate them, and I will be reminded of you.

The little calendar is very handy, so that is already stuck to the computer
monitor - saves me straining to see the wall-chart my husband has on the wall,
which is too high for me to see clearly, so that is greatly appreciated. The
tape measure is a stroke of genius too - my 'Lacemakers' Circle' tape has just
given up the ghost, so you must be psychic! Did you do the cross-stitch
yourself - it is lovely, and will be treasured. Especially if it helps the
inches of lace grow into yards ...

The key-ring!No one else can 'borrow' it as it has my initial on it, so I
am very pleased indeed with it - I do thank you very much.

So - thank you so very much for all the goodies - I am really pleased, and do
hope that your SP is as good to you!

Dear Secret Pal in Belgium,

Thank you very much for this months parcel. It was a nice surprise when I
came home from work!!!

I can't wait to start the bracelet, the colour is perfect, it goes with
everything that I wear. I am going to use a translator I found on the
internet to make sure I know what the instructions say. It will be fun to
do. I will wear it and show it off at my next lace event.

The beads on the divider pin are so pretty, I think I will use it as a pin
on a jacket to start with. If I ever get short of a divider pin, I will
know where there is an extra one.

The card is lovely, the work that went into that project is unbelieveable.

Thank you so much again for being such a great secret pal.

Many thanks for your lovely parcel of wonderful gifts.

I will be totally honest and let you know that it arrived last Friday. I have
however been busy entertaining my nephew visiting from Canada. My children
were so excited to see him so I am sure you can imagine it has been a very

I am so sorry for the delay in acknowledging your parcel.

I could smell the gorgeous aroma from the soap before I opened the parcel -
that one will be kept for special soaks in the bath when I need to relax!!
The beads are very special and will definitely come in useful. The sewing
machine badge is fun and will go on my pin cushion.

The quilting patten looks great. I have never attempted this sort of quilting
before - but my mum has! Maybe she will do it for me

We had a lovely holiday - thank you for asking. It was very relaxing and nice
and hot too. Don't worry about getting my son's name wrong (it was very close
anyway) - he definitely enjoyed the lollipop!! It lasted for ages!!

Once again, thank you for everything.

I have had a couple of days in bed with flu, and came downstairs for the
first time this morning to find a parcel waiting - thank you for the
bobbins, cutter, cover cloth, cross stitch kit and books.

I've seen the depth of frost on the grass and out rather large deck outside,
so think I'll go back to bed again.

Thank you again.

Hi to my Secret Pal,

And many thanks for the package which arrived this morning - a lovely start to
the day!

The koalas on the needlecase are splendid, and I am delighted with the case
too - it will have my supply of curved needles in it, as soon as I finish
this!I am also very pleased indeed with the bobbin - that will be spangled
and put into use almost immediately too - I have to renew some threads on the
garter for my daughter, so it is very handy indeed.

However, the address was still slightly incorrect - the 'Stratford' bit was
omitted, so I'll let you have the full address again - as follows:

Mrs Carol Adkinson
2 Swaynes,
STRATFORD ST. MARY
Colchester. Essex.
CO7 6YQ
UK

The package had the post code on it, so it reached me, but I suppose its
bettter safe than sorry, isn't it.

Once again, many thanks indeed - take care, and may your pins never bend!

Your Secret Pal,

Carol

work yesterday.

The bobbins are beautiful and very unusual and I will think of you when I use
them !

Thank you also for the ruler and lace pattern, I have not seen one like this
before. I will try and find time in the next couple of weeks to make the
lace.

Thank you also for the photos !

To my Australian Secret Pal

A huge thank you to my new Secret Pal. What lovely gifts you have sent me - I
am very lucky indeed!

The threads are all very lovely - I particularly like the one with the
variegated green shades. The pin badge will go on my pin cushion and the
magnetic book mark has come at a perfect time. I am about to go on holiday -
holidays are the only time when I find the time to sit and read a book! The
tissue holder with my name on is superb - and is just a perfect size for my
handbag.

It was very kind of you to think of the children. I am saving the necklace to
give to Bethany when we go on holiday and I think the big lollipop will last
Matthew for ever!

Sadly I think the Postman was a bit heavy handed with the parcel and the two
bobbins have been broken during their journey to the UK. I am going to fix
them with some superglue though as the woods are lovely and I am sure that
they will still be useable.

Thank you one again.

To My Secret Pal,

I am so sorry for the delay in sending to you - we were away for a fortnight
in the Lake District, so the package had to be picked up from the Post Office
on our return - and Monday was a Bank Holiday, so couldn't be picked up till
Wednesday.

However - I am delighted, once again! The bobbin case is lovely - and as I
was contemplating sorting out some of my stash of material to make another, it
came just at the right time, as I can make more lace now, not bobbin cases!

The chocolates received the seal of approval from the four grandchildren! (I
managed to sneak a few too, and as chocolate covered peanuts are my
favourites, they went down very well indeed.) The pin and the cloisonne bell
are both delightful, so I am a very fortunate person indeed!

The socks - I love them! They will be worn a lot, believe me! We have
wood and tile floors in our house, and I tend to wear socks as slippers, but
these will now be abused like that - they will be worn with shoes, so that
they don't get more holey than righteous, too quickly!

I am so looking forward to knowing who you are - this time, I really haven't
any idea, but I love hearing your news and reading the cards. I expect you
were so disappointed at not being able to go to the Kylie Minogue concert - I
am sure we all wish her every success with the treatment, and hope that she'll
be back fit and well, and performing very soon.

I know what you mean when you say you want to spend as much time as you can
with your Dad. I still have both my parents - in fact we spent the fortnight
in the Lake District with them - and they only live in the next county, about
two hours away, but even so, I think we all feel we don't see enough of each
other.

However - many thanks indeed for the May package, and I shall look forward to
knowing just who you are this month.

All best wishes,

Carol

Dear Secret Pal,

I went and collected my parcel from the sorting office tonight after work.

It took me some time to get in it but what a lovely surprise when I did!

I just love all the lilac coloured pressies. How clever of you to get
everything to match !

Thank you for the gardening gloves they are just what I need as last weekend
my others developed a hole and I had to wear my husbands that are at least 3
sizes too big!

I love the tissues and the lavender smellies and the lilac coloured notelets.

I usually make the Christmas ornaments on bangles so the bangles will
certainly come in very handy.

Last but not least another beautiful handmade card and in lilac also!!

Thank you so much for all the lovely goodies. I can't wait until next month

To My Wonderful and Inventive Secret Pal,

The parcel came yesterday, whilst I was out at the coast with the two youngest
grandchildren, so when I returned, it really bucked up an exhausted body.

The photo frame is delightful - and with three grandchildren, I will easily
keep it filled! It will have pride of place on the fridge, so it was a
really good idea!

The Bucks Point bookmark - well - you must be psychic! My Mum informed me
that she hasn't had a bookmark from me in all the years I have been lacemaking
(don't feel too sorry for her - she has had numerous motifs and things in
frames!) so I will get the bobbins wound, and start that one for her - it
really is so pretty! What a clever lady Joyce is - and it seems as if lots of
you Tasmanian ladies are jolly talented too. The Tasmanian Branch ALG mouse
mat is also an inspired idea - ours is getting a bit tattered round one corner
at the moment, so I will alternate this one with the other one received from a
SP - that one is also native Australian, so I am delighted with both.

The bobbins are delightful, and so beautifully spangled with such pretty beads
- I really am a very fortunate person, and do thank you so much. I will use
them when I make Mum's bookmark ...

Last but not least - the letter. The cards are so pretty, and you manage to
get quite a lot of information on them! I am so pleased that you had a good
time in Sydney, with your Dad and Rod's Mum too, but, as you say, once you are
back at work, the holiday seems a lifetime ago.

Thanks once again,

Your Secret Pal Carol

Once again you have found the perfect gift! The gardening book is perfect as

I LOVE the sewing kit, so elegant and just the size for my purse. Please tell
your Secret Pal thank you too, that was very nice of her! I really enjoying my
growing bobbin collection and bead collection. Your contributions are
wonderful.

The lace book is so cool! Some of the patterns remind me of macrame or
weaving. I imagine that is because of the popularity of those two skills and
the time the book was published. It's really terrific.

I really look forward to your boxes that arrive each month. They really cheer

Well - a huge thank-you to my wonderful Secret Pal. The parcel came this
morning - and it certainly brightened up a very grey day weatherwise!

The kangaroo is lovely - but I really don't think I could stick pins into his
tummy! I am the person who, when she washed the children's soft toys, made a
sort of harness of old tights/stockings, so that I didn't have to peg them by
their ears onto the washing line. So - he will sit happily on the pillow,
and will point out the errors, so he will be quite a hard-worked little chap.

The thread is lovely - a freind of mine is *very* adventurous with colour, and
is gradually training me too, so it will be very useful indeed, and I am
already wondering what to make with it. The cover cloth is super - so large,
and a wonderful motif on it. I shall take it to Lace Days, and really
show-off with it - not many people will have one with the Tasmanian Branch of
the Australian Lace Guild motif on it!

The little address book is so handy - small enough to pop into a handbag, so I
will always have my important addresses, phone numbers and eMail addresses to
hand! I am not working much at the moment, but it will be much used when I
restart my temping jobs.

The Survival Kit - well - I did chuckle! *All* the contents are very
necessary for anyone's well-being, so it is useful as well as decorative.
Thanks also for the note - the cards you use are lovely - another product of
the ALG!I do hope you enjoyed Melbourne, and that lots of lace was made
between the gossips! I shall think of you at the Royal Easter Show, and
visiting your Dad - my Dad's birthday is on the 21st March, so they are very
close birthdays. My parents are both in their eighties now, and keep very
well but as you say, not getting any younger - and I would hate to have
regrets that we didn't see them often enough!

Thanks once again - take care of yourself and Rod, and I shall look forward to
nmext month's news!

Thanks and Best Wishes,

Carol

To my wonderful Secret Pal,

Well - the parcel arrived yesterday, on a cold and greyish, depressing
morning, and I am delighted to be cheered up by it.

The calendar with all those lovely photos of Tasmania is great - so cheerful,
and with such arresting scenery. It is so inviting, and I am tempted to look
up fares on one of the (cheaper) airlines!

The Fish Pepper and the Jade Salt for Seafood smell so enticing - we will be
having fish for supper *very* soon indeed - I can't wait to try them both. I
loved the description of the Pepper - Hand Ground by Cheerful Trollops ... -
and thought that when I am able to stump up for a ticket to Tasmania, there
could well be a job opportunity!

The notepad is lovely, and will match the mouse mat I received in the previous
round - notepads and stationery are always good to receive, especially if you
have a 'Stationery Habit' like mine!I could be shut in the Staples
superstore, and love every minute.

The bookmark is a delight, and will be well-used. I love the tiny little
mouse, and he looks such a happy individual I'll have to keep him in *happy*
books so he doesn't get depressed. The bobbin is so lovely, and I do thank
you for that too - and the tiny little glass mouse. I will spangle the
bobbin with him, and will have to look carefully to find beads to match him.

In reply to your letter, I don't know an awful lot about the Lace Fair in
Grays, but will do my utmost to find out about it, and hopefully, I'll be able
to meet you and your lacey friend there!Essex is one of the larger
counties, but it would still be a relatively easy journey to get there, but
I'll see what more details I can find out, and will let you know, possibly
through Brenda!

Once again, many thanks indeed for your lovely gifts - I shall look forward to
knowing who you are, but in the meantime, many thanks indeed!

What a wonderful lucky dip all the way from Australia - everytime I thought

The box is so bright and cheerful. I am actually going to have this on my desk

The pencil and bookmark are already in use and as for the chocolates - my 6

Hello to my Secret Pal,

The goodies arrived safely on Monday, and were waiting for me when I reached
home - I haven't been able to get near the computer since, so I do hope the
delay in replying isn't inconvenient!

However - the photograph is delightful - so much so that I have lost it
already! My grandson keeps surreptitiously moving some of his treasures
into *his* bedroom here, and the photograph (did you take it yourself - it
really is lovely) is now adorning the wall, in a frame I'd bought for a piece
of lace. Ah well .

I am very impressed with the Tasmaninan Lace Guild bookplates - I am just
about getting to grips with 'ordinary' labels for the Christmas cards etc, so
am very impressed to have these. A good excuse to order even more books, I
am sure.

The sachet smells lovely, and reminds me of my last most enjoyable temping job
with Trinity House, the company which looks after the lighthouses and light
ships for England, and Wales (Scotland and Ireland have their own
organisations), so the picture on the front is greatly appreciated too.

The spangles are most welcome - are they a native wood? I shall have to put
them on very special bobbins. And talking of bobbins, the Christmas bobbin
is delightful I love the very slender bobbins, and the snowman is gorgeaous.
The spoangles on it match perfectly too, so I am very pleased indeed.

Thank you once again, and I do hope you are receiving such lovely gifts.

Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you so much for your parcel of goodies that arrived today.
You are certainly multi-talented as the card that you sent is beautiful.

Thank you so much for the thread I love the colours and will have to find a
pattern so that I can use them!

My husband has been eying up the jelly babies as they are his favourite so I
expect that he will have them and I will have my favourite the white chocolate
!!

The notelets always come in handy as I never have any when I need one, so no
excuses now !

The sachet is already in a drawer and smells lovely!

I have never seen the tweezer and magnifying glass set before but aren't they
a good idea ?
I have a feeling that my husband will be using them as well as me as he makes
oo gauge model trains and is always after both a magnifying glass and tweezers
!!

Now to answer a few of your questions.
I have done some cross stitch in the past but haven't done any recently and
this weekend if I find the time I am going to have a go at some wire lace. I
have been promising myself this since before Christmas so we'll see !!

My birthday is in September but my 26th wedding Anniversary is 24th February.
I can't believe that it is almost a year since we celebrated our Silver
Anniversary, where does the time go ?

My favourite colours are lilacs and pinks and my favourite patterns are
torchon and very simple Bucks. as I have only had a limited go at that. I
collect small teddy bears and snowmen.

All for now,
many thanks again,
Anne Nicholas

Dear Alessandra!!

So sorry it took me a while to write. I had last week off work, and your
parcel arrived on the Wednesday, but I had to wait until I got back to
work to use the Internet.
Well, I can't pretend it was a surprise finding out who you were, since I
saw you in Adelaide in October, but it was lovely receiving your last
parcel anyway :-). Thank you so much for all the goodies.
I love the macrame Christmas tree which you made yourself. It's so clever,
and more interesting than the usual hanging/bag...It's too heavy to put on
my Xmas tree (which is a bouquet of honesty branches, so very delicate,
and can only be decorated with miniature ornaments), but it will be hung
in the livingroom so I can see it! Thank you so much for making it for me.
I'm ashamed to say that I didn't made any lace for my S.P...
I love the lavender angel (gee!! you're lucky that one got past the
Customs! They opened it because the dog smelled something "that might be
forbidden".Where did you stash the white powder?I couldn't find
it...:-))but obviously it was OK because it didn't have seeds in it, just
the perfume. I will keep replenishing it, in the wardrobe, to keep the
moths away. We do have a lot here, any help is welcome!!
the little Father Christmas is cute. It can cling to the neck of my
uniform at work during the last 2 weeks before Xmas. It will fo well with
my special Xmas earrings...
Thank you also for the Rakam magazine. I have seen some before in one of
the libraries in Melbourne (not in ours, unfortunately, but the patterns
are always missing. I do love the magazine, though, there are such
beautiful things in it. Do Italian women really still make things as big
as embroidered tablecloths and sheets, covered in lace as well? Wow!
I am writing to you by snail mail, but I just wanted to ssay thank you on
the list as well.
Have a wonderful Christmas, and thank you for being such a nice S.P.

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks

2004-11-03 Thread Carol Adkinson
To My Secret Pal,

Firstly an apology - things have been hectic round here, and when the package
came my husband put it up in the Lace Place - which is the repository of all
'crafty' stuff, and is consequently festooned with all sorts of bags and
parcels in various stages of completion - and it didn't get opened.

However, it was discovered again this evening, when I was attempting to find a
simple but effective bookmark to make for the ladies who organised the Craft
Fair at the Church, with my parents. Needless to say when I found the
package, I gave up on the bookmark...

Well - what riches. The Diary is lovely, and I do like the little pearls of
wisdom on the page tops, and the cartoons at the bottom - what a talented lot
the Australian Lace Guild are!

The postcards are delightful - I shall have to be very selective to whom they
are sent - if they get sent at all; I am considering getting some of those
frames which frame lots of pictures - we will see. Similarly, the note cards
- only for very special people indeed, as the picturs are gorgeous, and the
colours lovely. The ALG certainly works hard at getting together lots of
wonderful goodies.

The Lettercards with the Lacemaker on are a treat - I shall enjoy sending them
to special friends, and I am sure they'll enjoy receiving them too.

The little gift tags are beautiful - one is alrready being used for the tag to
go with the crucifix for the naming day of my niece's little girl, on the 19th
November, so that will be treasured, I know. The rest will go on gifts at
Christmastide for my very special lacey friends - and maybe one or two
non-lacey but crafty friends! And the pictures - they are all so good, and I
love the hat! I can see me swanning around iin that, I just loved it! The
close-up of the Medusa head was wonderful too - it must have been so hard to
work, and the snakes are great! But - how tantalising!Which one was you
demonstrating - the one with the lace round the neck? Is it Beds lace? I
shall be so fretful until I know precisely who you are!

I also enjoy your letters, and will be sorry when this six-month stint comes
to an end! You are so newsy, and so informative, and I have so enjoyed
having you as a Secret Pal, and I do hope you Secret Pal has been as much
fun!

With many, many thanks, and looking forward to my tiny suspicions proved
correct - or otherwise!

All best wishes,

Carol

Mmmm, it doesn't sound much like Idrija lace...I'll keep it in mind, but
the bobbins are all of half a centimetre long, so I don't think I'd be

2004-09-22 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hello Again,

Well - just 'thanks' really doesn't seem enough. The package is wonderful,
and I love it all! (Even the stamps on the package were very greatly
appreciated - my Husband has a large stamp collection, some of the stamps a
lot more valuable than others, but he has kept the stamps, as Dylan - the
eight-year old grandson - has developed an interest, so they are starting his
collection, and he's really chuffed to death with the animal ones
particularly!)

The tea is great - I don't drink as much tea by any means as my Better Half,
and he has given it his seal of approval, so that can't be bad, and even I
have enjoyed the couple of cups that I have had, so thanks for that!

The coasters are great - in fact, even as we speak, the kangaroos are holding
my coffee cup, and they are certainly bright and cheerful! I somehow find it
hard to believe in platypusses (is that the correct collective noun?) - they
are such odd-looking little creatures - but I mean that in the nicest way, as
I would hate to offend such little sweeties!

The material again is delightful - like you, I am drawn to ethnic designs, and
these are lovely - I am in the process of attempting to get a new sewing
machine, and will try to make some cover cloths and/or bobbin rolls
(particularly if I can get the net sort of stuff recently spoken about on
Arachne). Maybe when it gets completed, I will send an eMail showing you what
I have succeeded in making - when I am sure of who you are, of course!

I loved the Australian Lace Guild magnet and the kangaroo pin - in fact I had
trouble wresting the pin from Dylan, so he approved of it too! The pattern
sheets are great too - I loved all of them, but particularly the little
bookmark with the cross shape in honeycomb, and the 'White Christmas' design.
They will jump up several places in the 'To Do' listings!

I can understand how much you want to visit the AGM in South Australia - I
find it hard to comprehend the distances between states - no wonder you aren't
contemplating driving next year to Western Australia - I find the thoughts of
driving the 380 miles to our bit of Pembrokeshire in Wales a bit daunting
sometimes, and I don't suppose your roads in the wilds of the country are a
lot better than some of ours in Wales! Probably wider and straighter, but
hazards like kangaroos and camels we *don't* have to suffer!

Thanks once again - I am looking forrward to finding out who you are, and
being able to thank you properly, in a personal message!

All best wishes, and thanks,

Carol

Dear Secret Pal in Italy,

I received your parcel this week. You sent it registered post (thank you,
but you don't really need to, the Australian Post Office is very reliable,
they just like to know what's in the parcel at the moment because of
terrorism measures), so I had to wait 3 days before I had a morning free
from work, because I had to pick it up at the post office.

But it was well worth the wait! Thank you so much for the lovely towel,
even if you didn't embroider it yourself :-). Actually, there is lots of
room left on the Aida band next to the duck, so I might add my own ducks
to this one!!Next year...
I love the pair of Italian bobbins, they are bigger than the English ones
we use, but they are very elegant. Thank you, they will be great for my
collection, and I do use them, from time to time. These will be good when
I have a thick gimp to work, or a very long length of thread.
I also like the thread. The more choice, the better! I'm putting it
carefully in my thread box until I think of something.
It's very exciting to think you will be in Adelaide!! I know we are not
supposed to know who our secret pal is until November, but I do hope you
will make yourself known to me!!!It would be terrible to know I have been
to the same conference as my secret pal and didn't meet her!! I will
arrive only on Wednesday evening, but I will be there until Sunday
morning. Of course, if you come to Melbourne, you will let me know, won't
you, and come and spend one or 2 nights with us if you can?
Looking forward to meeting you in person,

Hello my Secret Pal,

Well - the September sea-travelling parcel came yesterday - so I was thrilled
with the magazines, especially the Australian Lace Guild newsletters. I feel
I know so many of the lace-makers in the newsletters, and with pictures of
some of them, it was great to be able to put faces to the names. I have been
wondering if I could possibly join - I know getting to the meetings may be a
bit of a trial as the Tardis has gone in for repair, but I can always dream.

The embroidery mags were also fantastic, and I am busy trying to sort out what
project I would like to take on holiday with me! Quite a difficult
decision.

The mouse mat is wonderful - and is already in use. The Abbey National bank
one has been relegated to the bottom drawer!

Thanks once again - it was such a welcome surprise, and I am going back to
reading the magazines now.

Your Pal,

Carol

Dear Secret Pal,
The package arrived safe and sound and what wonderful surprises. I was
shocked that you actually thought of your secret pal while on vacation-the
thimble is great, how did you know I collect thimbles?
But where is Silver Dollar City? The bobbin fits in with some I already
have,
I do love them they just glide through your hands. And how crafty is that
pin
cushion. The chocolates were delicious. Note cards are always so handy.
We make Appalachian bird seed puzzles and the the cross stitch jar covers
will
make special covers for them. Thank you also for the stitch holder and mini
clips they are in my work basket already. Depending on what type of bobbin
lace I'm in the mood to do, I use both midlands or binche bobbins mostly,
most
recently I have been learning to do 'S Gravenmoer lace, bonnet lace from the
area where my parents were born/raised. I look like Mother Goose with long
hair anymore so keep it short. Don't do jewlery, much too allergic. I like
medium to finer threads. Again thank you, your packages do bring excitement.
Best regards.

2004-07-13 Thread Ruth Budge
Anne - I wonder did your secret pal tell you that possums also have the habit
of staging large, noisy fights in the tree-tops at night?? We have
ring-tailed possums in our neighbourhood (in suburban Sydney - you don't have
to live in the country to have possums around) and they apparently have a
variety of homes around the area, moving onto the next one when they've
exhausted the food in a particular area. They were very noisy here a few
months ago, till one night they came down out the trees and ate ALL the new
plants (many, many pounds worth!) in our garden. A couple of nights later, I
noticed all was quiet, and discovered they'd moved on (presumably to the next
freshly-planted garden!) The ring-tailed (so called because they have a white
ring around the tail) possums use the overhead electricity wires as a sort of
aerial footpath to walk along and cross the streets. It's a bit hair-raising,
watching them - they wobble so much I keep waiting for them to fall off, but
I've never seen one fall yet.

2004-06-16 Thread Helene Gannac
Dear Italian secret pal,

Just received your parcel. Thank you for the candles and the thread,
they'll come in handy some time!I like the Idrija lace pattern. have you
done a course? I haven't learnt how to make it yet, but I'm sure I can do
it with the help of a book. What kind of lace do you make? Cantu or
torchon, or something else?
I know what you mean about not having time!! I work full time and have a
husband and house and garden to look after, plus I like doing other things
as well, so I always run out of time. I like going to demonstrations and
lacemaking weekends so I can concentrate on my lace without guilt!!
Yes, I have been to Italy several times, but I have never seen any lace
places. I hope I will some time. My parents live in Provence, so it's not
far from Italy. DH and I go to Europe every 2-3 years for a holiday, but
we spend most of our time with my parents. We do travel to Italy with them
sometimes. We were supposed to visit the Dolomites region in 2003, but my
husband had a tooth abcess just before we were supposed to leave
Melbourne, so we had to postpone our trip for 2 weeks and cancel our
Italian trip. Next time, maybe!
I'm looking forward to your next parcel! I love postcards of lace and
costumes, if you know of any
When you send a parcel to Australia, can you please put a customs sticker
on it to tell customs what is inside, otherwise they open the parcel (they
did this time), and maybe things might fall off. You cannot send anything
made of skin, rough wood (bobbins are OK :-)), or seeds, plants or
anything that could contain germs or small bugs to Australia. Sweets or
biscuits are OK, but not sausage, pate, ham, etc...(I'm sure you wouldn't
send any of those, but just to give you an example)
I'm really puzzled as to who you are! I'm not even sure whether you are
English or Italian, your English is so good...Have to wait 5 months to
learn!! :-)

All the best, have a nice summer, and thank you again

Thank you for my March gift, which finally arrived ( having had a small detour
to customs) This is the second package I have had opened by customs, and I
wonder what they must think about the lack of names etc identifying the
sender?

I am now well prepared for Easter with a beautifully decorated chocolate egg,
and smaller eggs also. The candles are lovely and will look wonderful
floating on a special occasion. I love the table linen. It is a beautiful
creamy yellow, with a geometric pattern in the weave of the fabric, stylish
and understated.

Thank you once again, and I look forward to putting a name to the wonderful
gifts I have received

Dear NZ Secret Pal,

I received your delightful package today. How nice! I just loved the
miniature clothes pins (I wonder if you call them something else?) and real
wood, too. The little Kiwi pin is adorable and the cross stitch of a blue
penguin is just enough to wile away the moments when I can't look at the
threads I've been breaking for the last couple of hours. But the needle
case is tops! The design is so perfect. Somebody knows all the bad things
about needle cases and fixed them. How clever.

Thanks for a lift on grungy Monday.

Thank you so much for the package you sent. The thread is beautiful ... I
love the colors you have picked. I made a bookmark of the pink and green you
sent. It's a kind of funky tape lace flower. It's my favorite bookmark of
all that I've ever made... the only one yet that I've kept for myself! This
afternoon I went shopping for the perfect book to go in the book cover you
sent... I finally decided on Dr. Phil's diet book. It fits great and will be
put to good use I hope :) Where did you find the material you used? It's so
pretty! The rooster is absolutely adorable!! He sits in a place of honor on
my countertop...such a cutie! Thank you again :)

Dear Secret Pal in California

Your package arrived this morning - I was at home because it's
half-term week so I didn't have to go down to the post office to
collect it. I was catching up on my painting class homework when the
postman came and the mild irritation at having to go and answer the
door soon disappeared when I unwrapped all the goodies!

The cards are lovely - the painting class theme is art forms from
nature and I've been (trying!) to do a couple of semi abstract
paintings from sketches of a tree that's been struck by lightening.
The bigger card is very much like what I'd like to try and do next,
with the stylised figures, girl's long flowing hair and flowers, so it
and the wrapping paper will go into the 'ideas' folder.

I can't see a lace pattern in the sea horse paper, but there is one in
the flower paper - have already drawn it with lots of petals and
plaits, but how best to work it is another matter, five petal flowers
don't just fall into place.

The ballerina will be saved for the Christmas tree - I'm beginning to
get quite a collection of little ornaments from lace friends which get
used each year - and the ginger biscuits are delicious. They certainly
won't last until Christmas.

Thank you for everything

I want to thank you for your package. I am always impressed at how much
thought you put into your gifts. This month seemed to have a theme! "mini"
theme that is...mini barrel of monkeys (perfect for entertaining bored nephews
and nieces and I have already had a large sized barrel of fun showing it off)
a mini divider pin (beautiful in it's diminutiveness) and a mini craft keeper!
I am using it for my spangling beads! The pin cushion has found its home and
the threads are beautiful. I am hanging the adorable mini rooster bucket on
my wall with some silk daisies in it. It is going to look great. I'll have
to send you pictures of all your rooster things when this comes to an end.
Hope you had a sweet Valentine's Day and that work is slowing down a bit for
you so that you can enjoy it! Thank you so much for the past few months and
the effort you have made...it is appreciated :)

Dear Secret Pal,

Thank you so much for your parcel that has just arrived.
You need not of been worried about it arriving late or not arriving on
Valentines Day, your timing was perfect!!

Thank so much for the valentines goodies they are much appreciated,
especially as I know my DH will not of got me anything !!
It is our wedding anniversary 10 days later and he does not do both. I must
not moan as this year it is our 25th and he has bought me a lovely ring that
we collect today and we are going on a special holiday to the Dominican

The chocolates look lovely and the socks will perfectly match a pair of pink
trainers that I have just bought!

You sound as though you are going through a bad time and I'm sorry to hear

Thank you so much for your wonderful package. Just one complaint, why only a
picture of your beautiful cat - I want to adopt the real thing!

Seriously though, I love the calendar, I did not have one to keep on my desk
this year, so he will be accompanying me to the office. The chocolate will be
consumed despite the calories, and enjoyed too. The beads are beautiful
shades of blue, and will brighten bobbins one day soon (I tend to wait until I
have a few bobbins to spangle and then do the lot in one go). The book was a
wonderful surprise. I have not done much tape lace (I mainly concentrate on
torchon or pointground), but the designs are so pretty that I know I will
enjoy trying them out.

Thank you once again, and I am sorry for not being able to respond in better
time last month.

Dear Secret Pal

Thank you so much for another wonderful parcel which arrived this morning
much to the annoyance of the cat who will insist on sleeping behind the
front door and was rudely awakened by the delivery of the mail which landed
on him.

The contents are just marvellous - the silk is lovely and I shall save it
for a special occasion. I have not seen the metallic threads before and the
packages are almost too nice to open. I have not seen the Needle Pullers
before but they will certainly be put to good use in the not too distant
future. The pins will also be used and the card stock survived so that will
go into my store too.

Until next time

Merci beaucoups, moi amie.

That's about all the French I know and it's probably wrong. LOL

I'm sorry to be so late in thanking you. I've had dental problems, a
sprained ankle, and a crashed computer. Thankfully, everything is so much
better now.

I did receive the December packet. I sent a thank you about the time my
computer decided to take a holiday, so I guess it didn't make it through.
The stocking immediately went on the tree and the divider pin on the pillow.
I used the bubbly in my bath Christmas Eve. The keychain is also in use.
Is the eagle design on the Le Puy a coat of arms? My oldest son, his wife,
and 2 daughters (12 and 7) were here for 2 days right after Christmas. They
were properly awed when I showed them all the things you sent. I even
shared the calissons with them. My daughter-in-law is so proud that now she
s has eaten something from France.

The sachet has been placed in my lingerie drawer. The zipper bag is
delightful; the candies delicious. The coiffes on the postcard are really
something. They look like they would be hard to wear. The Santa will go on
my tree next year. It looked skimpy this year because I could only find one
box of my ornaments. Wouldn't you know it--we found the missing box when we
were storing the Christmas stuff this month. I love looking at the lace on
both the calendars and hope I will someday to make some that beautiful. I
m a firm believer in aromatherapy and the wands are great!

You've have certainly been good to me. Thank you so much.

I had a friend over when your package arrived. At first I set it aside, but I
couldn't wait to see what was inside, so I invited my friend to look with me,
and we opened the package together! It was so much fun! She was as excited as
I was! The coffee smells delicious, and the "tea" you sent smells absolutely
fantastic! I am looking forward to trying them both out. The thread is such
a nice color and the swan made it safely across the country. He looks right
at home in my pin cushion! The roosters are beautiful. They even earned a
second look from my husband! I have enjoyed each rooster item you've sent
very much! I can see from the calendar that you live in a beautiful part of
this country. My father-in-law went there several years ago...it had been a
life long dream to see those big trees! He loved it. You're right about the
variety of views in a state. I am surrounded by salt marshes here and about 5
miles from the ocean. Still, because I am in the north of the state, I have a
yard full of magnolia trees and live oaks. It sounds like you had a wonderful
Christmas. I'm glad you could share it with your best friend. I have shared
over 29 with mine now. It gets better and better each year. Take care of
yourself...I can't imagine the weather you've had! Talk to you soon.

Well! Aren't I the luckiest person to have you for my Secret Pal. I
am so happy with all the teapot things. The package was waiting for me when I arrived

The Honiton pattern and the lovely bobbins and fine thread ( almost impossible to get

I have quite a challenge to do more.
 Thank you so much.Regards Mary

Dear Secret Pal in California

Your package arrived today, thank you. You have a different name this
time! When I saw the ball of Finca thread I thought maybe I knew who
you are but looking back at the recent correspondence about Finca it
was with Noelene in Australia.

The picture of the lace you made for your mother is great - you must
have burned a bit of midnight oil to get it done in just three weeks!
All best wishes to her and her new husband.

I've been Christmas shopping gain today - just about finished except
for the foodstuffs. I very nearly bought some paper napkins but
decided I didn't really like any that were in the local shops, so those
in the pack are very welcome - they will get used on Sunday 28th when
we have all the family over for lunch and tea.

The lace ornament is hanging on my Christmas tree, right at the front.
All the ornaments are gold or white so that one fits in well and will
be used for years to come. When I unpacked the boxes of Christmas
decorations last week it was lovely finding several little gifts from
different Arachnes - a giant bobbin spangled with tinsel and baubles
from Valerie (in California), a ribbon and shell ornament from Alice
(in Oregon) and a BL picture "card" from Liliane in Canada. Next year
there will also be a BL ornament from ??

Wishing you and yours a very happy festive season
