[newbie] Nebula DigiTV

2004-10-25 Per discussione Andrew Tuson

Does this digital TV card work with Linux 10? When I use the TV Card control
tool in Manrake Control Centre I select Nebula DigiTV in the card model area
and Auto-detect in the tuner type area. When it starts tuning a console
window pops up and then disappears after about 1 second.

Is there any way of finding what my problem is?

[newbie] Sound DVD problems

2004-10-01 Per discussione Andrew Konosky
I can't seem to get my sound to work on my old computer. I did a fresh
install of Mandrake 10.1 community, but the sound doesn't work. I had
this same problem under Debian 3.1 on this same computer. The chip is
just an onboard Creative PCI128 and uses the kernel module es1371. I was
trying to play a DVD and didn't have any sound. The Mandrake hardware
control center detects my sound card right, but trying to run kmix fails
because it can't find alsa, and the Gnome volume control doesn't have
any channels to adjust either! Alsa is installed configured to run in
Init 3-5, so I don't know what the problem is there.

I did a simple 'modprobe es1371' command from a root shell and the sound
works fine now. I don't want to have to manually load the kernel sound
module everytime I startup, so how do I fix the sound settings?

Also, both Xine and Totem will not read my DVDs. Xine plays the first
intro track (MGM Studio scene etc...) and then says the video is
encrypted, and totem won't even play. MPlayer plays the DVD fine (with
sound after the modprobe command), but I can't find an RPM for the gui
version and I don't have time right now to compile the sourcecode. Where
can I find the Xine DVD plugins and the gmplayer rpm packages? The urpmi
says they can't be located.

[newbie] Updating the system after install

2004-09-30 Per discussione Andrew Konosky
Hello,
I just downloaded the 1st install CD of Mandrake 10.1 community because
I wanted to try out this distro. I have an old computer that some other
distros seemed to have some trouble with, but MandrakeMove booted fine
from CD, so I deciced to try the full OS on it. Since I only installed
packages from the one CD, the system has very minimal components
installed. It has defaulted to using IceWM, but I would like to install
Gnome instead. Also, there are no web browsers installed either! I tried
installing more software, but the only installation medium I can chose
is the CD, and when I select Gnome and Mozilla packages, they are not
installed, yet the program reports the installation/update was a
success??? I tried updating from the list of ftp servers that it found,
but I keep getting an error saying that the servers are not conifugred...

Does Mandrake's RPMDrake work similar to Apt-get or similar package
managers? How do I install new software from online rather than just the
CD? Is there an Apt repo for mandrake anywhere? Does this require me to
subscribe to the Mandrake club?

I don't want to pay any money just yet, so thats why I downloaded the
community ISO version. Then If I like Mandrake, I will contribute get
the full version. But I would at least like to try out Mandrake before I
decide to sign up for the club.

 printf( free blocks: %ld\n, partition.f_blocks );

f_blocks is the total number of blocks, not the number free. Assuming

(4096*2786971)/1024/1024/1024 == 10.6GB ~=11GB

So my results are fine on 10.0 oe.

In addition, afterwards, it will not close not via the GUI or a right click and I
 have to restart X.

At the CLI, it works like I expect it to - I'm using 10.0 with the Official updates.
 Has anyone else experienced this?

The problem lies with soundwrapper. When you use it from the CLI xmms
interfaces directly with the soundcard device. When you start it from
the menu it runs 'soundwrapper xmms'. As I understand it, soundwrapper
allowed multiple programs to produce audio which was then transparently
mixed by the KDE sound daemon. This allowed multiple channels before
that functionality was implemented in hardware kernel device drivers.
Most likely you do not now need it.

soundwrapper is a way for applications that uses sound to be rerouted
to use arts (the sound daemon for KDE) before going into the sound
driver. This way, multiple applications that uses sound can be run at
the same time (i.e. hearing those warning signals in gaim while playing
your favorite mp3 in xmms). This is useful if you have a soundcard that
doesn't support multi-channel sound sources right from the hardware (or
if the linux sound driver for that hardware doesn't support
multi-channel).
http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12260

So essentially this is a bug which you must work around. The solution is
to right click on the K and go to Menu editor. In there locate the
entry for xmms and remove the 'soundwrapper' text from the command.

Does anybody have any clue what happened. I've lost some crucial data in

I've had precisely the same experience- with regularly saved documents.
I lost a 3000 word essay that was due in a few days! Searched
*everywhere* but it was gone. It's clearly some sort of bug with the way
OOo is closed/restored when you log out. It is handy to have KDE reopen
all yr windows so you can start exactly where you left off, I do the
same. BUT the trick seems to be to close all yr OOo windows before
logging out.

If I find the time I'll report this one of these days. Just not exactly
sure who to report it to- mdk, kde, or OOo? Wish I had found some logs
of what exactly goes wrong.

So- no advice really! Just sympathy- wanted to let you know it isn't
just you!

Well my upgrade to ML 10.0 official was not a total success. It looks like I

I haven't tried the upgrade option recently but I've had limited success
with it in the past. In a way it's fair enough- there are an enormous
number of packages and making sure that the users' data the system
settings are still valid (syntactically semantically) for every one of
those constantly evolving pieces of software is a huge job. Technically
I think it is the responsibility of the software to upgrade the data
structures if they are from a previous version (Evolution does this
well) but generally the non-commercial packages don't seem to. And
guessing at which packages are required is tough. It seems to me it
might be best to take that option out and force people to properly
back-up only the data they need and select the packages they want. These
unsuccessful upgrades don't do a great deal for the image of the distro.
Just my $0.02.

I would like to do this clean installation without lozeing to much stuff,
espicially bookmarks in opera, emails in kmail and contact list in kmail. It
seems like every time I try this I have problems with those things.

The trick is to find the directories, in your home directory, in which
these user-specific settings/data are stored and only move those to the
new set up. For instance opera stores its settings in '.opera', so
backing up this will save your bookmarks. Kmail settings will be in the
'.kde' directory, I'd think. I wouldn't recommend carrying all that
folder forward. Best just to copy the actual kmail folder, which might
be at '/home/bar/.kde/share/apps/kmail/' but I don't use it so don't
really know. Go in and look at the file structure/date stamps/file sizes
and see if this tallies with yr data and latest check of mail.

I would be thankful for any advice on what to back up or any tips on how to
make this as painless as possible.

Back up everything, all the time! ;) But seriously, it is worth taking
backups, as regularly as you can afford to loose the data.

Make sure you can get back to the state you're in at the moment if it
all goes pete tong. Although I've recommended moving as few directories
as possible, to keep success rate as high as possible, make sure you
back everything up.

Generally what I do when moving to a new version of mdk is (as root,
clearly- with nobody else logged in):

1) move my home directories to a different place on my home partition.
ie. mv /home/bar/ /home/foo/ .

2) Then I run the install, choose the 'new installation' option (or
whatever it's called!) then, at the partition formatting stage I leave
the home partition deselected. That way it doesn't delete my data.

3) On restart I log in as root, copy (not move- I want to keep the
integrity of my old home dir) the directories I want to salvage to the
new account and change the owner of them, recursively, to the new user
('bar'). (Unless you've got lucky and put yr users back on in the same
order yr UIDs match from last install.)

4) Profit. Or at least u'll be able to log on fire up yr apps with all
old data intact.

For apps which don't let you use old setting/data directories there are
ways to salvage the situation. If you have any of those then let us
know.

YMMV- if you're not completely comfortable with what I've just described
then just restore from media. In either case copy yr data onto removable
media before installing. Don't take any risks!

Good luck!

What is text file icon status? Is this in a graphical file manager?

If you are worried about the integrity of a file (and I probably would

The period that proceeds the filename is to indicate that it is to be

to any attributes (as far as I'm aware). To view these files you just
have to overwrite the behaviour of the file browsing application you are

From 'man ls' the switch to use is -a, so 'ls -a' should display all the

I'm assuming you're talking about shoutcast (or similar mp3 based)

In XMMS:
Options-preferences then in the input plugins box select MPEG Layer

comes up select the streaming tab. At the bottom of the tab there is a
section titled SHOUT/Icecast. This is where you want to select the
Enable title streaming option.

The reason this is disabled by default is because of a bug where there
would be disruptions to the audio playback. As I remember it some sort
of popping/hissing? Anyway I think that bug was fixed a while back.
Works for me...

Let us know how you get on,

slashdot:
http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/04/03/2322233mode=threadtid=106tid=185tid=189

I don't have any experience but from some browsing the installation
instructions are:

 General installation instructions:
-Decompress the tar.gz in /usr/share as root
-Edit the .xinitrc file of the user you want to run XPde and put this
line:
 /usr/share/xpde/bin/startxpde
 -Start X

If you're looking to build an rpm, you'd presumably have to write a
script, which does some of the above. I've heard that checkinstall is
very good for capturing the behaviour of the script and putting it all
together, if you work out how to write the script! I'm not quite sure
what you would do for the user specific stuff- maybe do it system wide
in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ? Or leave it to the user to actually enable
it if they want? Perhaps this software needs some adapting to work with
a package based system!

Good luck!

RE: [newbie] MDK 10 and Drakconnect

If you have problems try it this way...

- Firmware (mgmt.o) in /usr/share/speedtouch/ (ALREADY DONE)
- Run through dragconnect wizard and put all your ISP details in (PROBABLY
ALREADY DONE)
- Goto command line and type: /usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh start
- ('/usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh stop' to close connection)

I can't connect directly through the wizard, but it always works from the
command line.

Lee,

I have since upgraded from 9.2 to 10, and it shouldnt have really changed
things much. However, I have my connection set to start at boot, both green
lights began to flash on my modem, (as is normal), and then the ADSL light
went yellow, and that was it, a failure message.

I'm going to try setting it up with the Speedtouch package from the 9.2
Distro. The modem firmware code is the same as I have always used.

Like you said, 9.2 is now history on this box. so if I cant get things
to go my way, I'll reinstall 9.2, and let a Linux guru buddy of mine have a
play with it at a later date.

Before you leave 9.2 get a list of your drivers that are working.
You can choose them manually if the automagic install picks the
 wrong ones.

Happened to me when it was already too late (9.2 was history on that
box) I had to find someone with the same setup. He listed his
config and I was running in minutes.

[newbie] To Clarify urpmi Errors

2004-03-18 Per discussione andrew . lundy
Hi all,

I've been reading around the Internet about these errors I've been getting
while using urpmi, and the general feeling is that it's a bug in Mandrake
9.2. Anyway, I'd just like to clarify this before I do anything stupid...

Basically, I've installed MDK 9.2 from the discs one and two, right after
that I've done a 'urpmi.removemedia -a' and then updated it so urpmi update,
contrib, etc looks to new ftp mirrors on the web.

I get something like this:

---

$ urpmi sylpheed
blah blah... you must install these extra packages... blah blah...

medium contrib uses an invalid list file: mirror is probably not
up-to-date, trying to use alternate method

the following packages have bad signitures... blah blah... Missing signature
(sha1 md5 OK)
Do you want to continue installation? (Y/n)

---

If I do 'y', the packages install and there seems to be no problem. If
that's the case and there is no problem with doing this, is there any way to
stop it from giving me this warning each time I want to install something?

Thanks.

You can get rid of the invalid list file: warning if you remove the
file /var/lib/urpmi/list.contrib

then edit your /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg
and remove the line: list: list.contrib for your contrib source...

As for the bad signature warning check that your contrib source has a GPG
key associated with it in the Software Sources GUI in Mandrake Control
Centre.

BTW: If you want sylpheed you might like to try Charles Edwards' version. It

is newer than the one in contrib http://www.eslrahc.com/ It can be set up as

a urpmi source. (Good job Charles)

[newbie] Software Recommendations MDK 9.2

Hello people,

There is an abundance of software available for Linux, which is great, but I
don't have time to look through it all at the moment. So I was hoping you
could recommend me some of the best (or THE best) software for the following
things for MDK:

- Movie player.
- MP3 player. (including playlist feature)
- HTML editor / Web site construction software.
- Image creating/editing.
- FTP client.

[newbie] RPM Package Installation Issue

2004-03-12 Per discussione andrew . lundy
Hi,

I recently updated all my links for the MDK 9.2 software packages and
updates to the UK Canterbury FTP site using urpmi.

However, when I try to install some of the packages on the list it gives me
an error like The following packages... ... have bad signatures, continue
to install?

I was told this might be because I have not downloaded all the updates for
the existing software. So I did that and I still get this error with most
packages.

Also - if I tell it to continue with the install the package still seems to
work okay when its finished. So I'm not sure what it's getting at?

Is there any genuine reason why it is giving this error?

Thanks.

[newbie] Mandrake Control Center Down

Hi,

When I go to start Mandrake Control Center or click Configure My Computer it
prompts me for the root password and after that it just hangs on the splash
and just says Loading... please wait at the bottom, but never actually
loads. It had worked fine previously.

I'm not sure this has anything to with it - but I did a bunch of updates for
my Mandrake 9.2 last night through the update option in the control center.

Any ideas on what I should or can do to get the Conrol Center back?

You can use Software Media Manager under Software Management in drakconf
to add this as a security updates source. Mandrake Update will then
look there for updates rather than going out on the net.

[newbie] Apollon (from plf) on mdk 9.2 won't run.

2004-01-06 Per discussione Andrew Archibald
I have installed apollon from the penguin liberation front (plf) source
but can't get it to run. When I run it I get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] elizabeth]$ apollon
kbuildsycoca running...
apollon: relocation error: apollon: undefined symbol:
_ZN7Apollon10giFTSocketC1EP7QObjectPKc
[EMAIL PROTECTED] elizabeth]$ Mutex destroy failure: Device or
resource busy

I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it with no effect.

The history of this is that I installed it initially and then
(accidentally) ran it as root (forgot to 'exit' back to user account).
It started to the configuration screen where I put in a user name and
clicked ok. It then failed to start. Now, even after a reinstall, it
won't bring up even this initial setup screen (for root or a normal
user). I have never had the actual main program load on that machine.

I would think it might be a bad package on plf but I've definitely
installed apollon successfully on another 9.2 machine. My suspicion is
that it is something to do with running it as root initially. The system
must be holding some sort of state information or something which isn't
removed with the package- I just can't find it.

I don't know if it's relevant but this machine, for space reasons, does
not have GNOME or most of the development libraries installed. I
wouldn't guess this would make any difference as it is a KDE
application. It is up-to-date with mandrake updates.

Just for completeness the commands I'm using to install/uninstall are
(respectively):
'urpmi apollon' and
'urpme apollon-0.9.1-2plf.i586 gift-0.11.4-5plf.i586
gift-fasttrack-0.8.5-1plf.i586 libapollon0-0.9-1plf.i586
libgift0-0.11.4-5plf.i586'

I'd very much appreciate any light that anyone could shed on this! I
hope it's something obvious that I'm missing!

Thanks in advance,
Andrew.

When I checked yesterday one of the plf mirrors still had the older version of
Apollon that works OK. I think it is the one in Slovakia

Thanks for your prompt response and advice. I've now got the older

What CL syntax are you usin with mencoder to do this? I'm
mostly just curious as I only recently got a DVD/CDrom myself.
I've had a lot of luck just copying all the files in the VIDEO_TS
directory on the DVD to a HDD dir. Then play the movie with
   'mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device /path/to/movie/name_of_movie'

Or you can 'dd if=/dev/hdc of=name_of_movie' that'll make a
copy of the DVD in the dir you run the command from. You'll just
get an extra 500mb's of useless M$ setup BS tho. Out of 9 DVD's
I have, only two refuse to be copied (an they're both older
movies?). Well, I can copy 'em, but some of the .vob files come
out -0- byte. No matter how I copy 'em. I've even tried playin
the movie to a file, eg,
 'mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device /dev/hdc /home/tom/name_of_movie'
The same .vob's come up -0- byte. Evidently there's some copy
protection libdvdcss isn't gettin around (?).

I've done alot of reencoding .avi, .mpg, .wmv files with
mencoder and it often results in a sound not in sync situation. I
just deal with it by using the + and - keys to sync sound during
playback. Which is why I like mplayer so much, the ability to
adjust contrast, brightness, tint, color level, sync, and sound
volume on the fly during playback. I'm currently usin,
 mplayer-1.0-0.pre2.4plf
 mencoder-1.0-0.pre2.4plf
 libdvdread3-0.9.4-2mdk
 libdvdcss2-1.2.8-1plf
plus all the other PLF codecs

The command I use is

mencoder dvd://$DVDTRACK1 -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vbitrate=$BITRATE -oac mp3lame -forceidx -lameopts
br=96:cbr -alang en -o $FILENAME1.avi
The reason for the $DVDTRACK1 etc is because i use a bash script to run it,
as follows

echo D I V X RIPPING TOOL

echo ; echo

echo Written by Spike (credits also to ralph)

echo ; echo

echo 1 pass rip

echo Enter the details for the DVD track number

echo ; echo

echo -n Enter the DVD track number: ; read DVDTRACK1

echo ; echo

echo -n Enter a filename (no .avi): ; read FILENAME1

mencoder dvd://$DVDTRACK1 -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vbitrate=$BITRATE -oac mp3lame -forceidx -lameopts
br=96:cbr -alang en -o $FILENAME1.avi

Thanks for the tip about +/- I didn't know you could do that.

One other question I would kie to know the answer to is , if I rip a dvd
that is out of sync

is it mplayer that gets out of sync or is the actual recording out of sync

I had the same problem. You need the kernel header files which I think are on
the installation CD2. Or I think you can use rpmdrake and click on the
development option in the tree view.

[newbie] RAID configuration problems

2003-03-16 Per discussione Andrew Miller
Having big trouble trying to configure MDK 9.0 with a Promise IDE RAID.
If there are drives attached to the the RAID controller, in this case
a couple of Western Digital 80 giggers, the BIOS allows me to set up
the RAID. However, the Mandrake 9.0 installer only sees two separate
drives. It also seem to insist that these are hda and hdc, making the
other drives in the box hde and hdf. I want to use the drives the
installer sets to hde as the boot disk and location for the root
directory, but since I can't seem to get the installer to see the array
as a single volume, I tried to have the bootloader put on hde, with the
plan to configure the RAID array later. But then the machine won't
boot. Default location for the bootloader is on hda and it looks like
the machine fails to find it on hde.

Is there a different strain of Mandrake Linux that will properly see
the RAID array at installation? Is there something I'm just missing
here? Been beating my head on this for a day and it seems like it
shouldn't be so difficult. The Promise controller is on the
mtherboard, processor is an AMD XP2200+ with a gig of PC2700 RAM. Any
help with this is appreciated. The machine has been running fine with
just the two original drives (100 gig IBM 75GXP's) in it, but it just
won't go with the array.

Much conventional question this time (sorry about the last one I really didn't

Anyway I'm trying to install VMware 3.1 and after installation I get this
message when trying to run:

VMware Workstation Error:
VMware Workstation is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
for your running kernel. To (re-)configure it, your system administrator
must find and run vmware-config.pl.

After running vmware-config.pl I get this message:

None of VMware Workstation's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this script to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?

After choosing yes I receive another message:

Argument gcc (GCC) 3 isn't numeric in numeric ge (=) at
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl line 1476, STDIN line 1.
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your
running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

Where are these files please they are not in the directory it suggested
[/usr/src/linux/include]. I've tried allsorts but with no luck.

Thanks in advance

Re: [newbie] Worried

2003-03-02 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer
Hi all

Can I please state for the record that I am a complete Linux supporter. I
have been with Mandrake since version 6 and although having left the arena,
so to speak, for sometime now I still believe that linux is the best OS
system around and Mandrake the best version.

What my original e-mail was trying to show (and I apologise for not making
this clear) is the average end user perspective. There is much talk here, as
there always has been, of Linux-v-Windows and I was just illustrating, after
my installation of XP, as to what a windows user must think when faced with
Md9 or any other linux version for the first time.

In my opinion too much time and effort is directed towards converting the
windows user to linux and basically I was showing that although linux is by
far the better of the two, XP gives people what they want and damn fast.

Some of you have said that chaning desktops will improve preformance but as I
originally stated I don't want to, again getting my head into a windows users
perspective where KDE or Gnome is the more familiar. Showing some new person
Enlightenment or even ICEwm is not going to impress at all. They want
familiararity, hence my choice of desktop.

I hope this has made my stance clear,

Andrew

[newbie] worried

2003-02-28 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer
Now don't get me wrong I love linux and have been with Mandrake since v6.0
though I must say in my opinion v9.0 is not one of it's best, perhaps,
sorry, definately a bit hasty with this release!

Anyway the point is I've just upgraded my windows98 to XP and I must admit
in all fairness for the desktop, I know nothing of computers, average
user, XP is better.

Now before I get flamed let me explain. I run a small 500mhz Athlon with
64mg memory but for speed and effeiciency XP is by far the fastest.
My Md9 is a minimal installation (although having most of the HD) but still
pales in comparison to XP even when a large number of apps are working.
With XP I boot and hey-presto I'm logging in with Md9 I can make a brew etc
etc. (well not literally but you get the point)

I beleive that as far as the end user is concerned speed is the most
important factor. Not how much software is free or that linux is more
stable and reliable. The average user wants speed. You click on an icon
and up pops the application IMMEDIATELY!!! With XP even my little 500
acheives this performance but alas (and I mean that with a heavy heart) Md9
is a slow monolith beleiving that placing god knows how many apps into their
installation cd's will convert new customers.

Just my thought

Re: [newbie] Mandrake so slow in a pentium 200

2003-02-26 Per discussione Andrew Scotchmer

. There is no way you can run KDE 3.0 on 32MB of RAM
 - you need 128MB for even tolerable speeds, and 512MB would be necessary
to give full performance. As a comparison, 32MB is barely enough to run
Windows 98, and Mandrake 9.0 is not the equivalent of Win98, it's more
like XP (except that it doesn't give the world access to your computer,
and you don't have to sell your soul to install it).

 Sir Robin

Oh contrare Sir Robin :)
I have installed Md9 along with on a friends cyric 300Mhz 32mbRAM just fine.
A little slow compared to windows but then what can you expect.
Guess what, he also dual boot to Windows98 and that works perfectly.

Maybe these larger chip sizes that companies keep telling us we MUST have
make us forget how useful the older slower ones can still be!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this working under MDK 9?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

It has been said by politicians on both sides of the atlantic that bush and

having to use military might is because Iraq does not comply wih the UN but
then we will ignore the UN so as to go to war with Iraq for the exact same
reasons. This is getting complicated.

Another thing, when is america going to compensate the families of those who

[newbie] IBM Deskstars in Mandrake 9.0 server

2003-01-06 Per discussione Andrew Miller
I built a server recently for web server, email server, file server and
other uses and am running Mandrake 9.0 on it. I used a pair of 100 GB
IBM Deskstars (120GXP's I believe). IBM is having problems with these
drives failing and now recommends only using them 330 hours a month,
something less than 50% of the time (see
http://www.sheller.com/ibmpress.htm). My question is whether my use of
these drives in a server application is something I should avoid?
Also, is there a setting for power savings that would sleep the drive
when it is not getting any hits (most of the time). Looks l could add
a decent SCSI drive that is meant for always-on use. Your feedback is
welcome.

Is there anyway that this can be done in Linux. I can get it to display

When I highlight a URL, and up pops a window that asks which
browser to use...I want to use Mozilla. It has 3-4 other browser
choices that work, but I want my Mozilla. It lists Mozilla as a
choice but my new install of Mozilla is I guess in a different
place. In KDE where do I look to point this web-url thingy to
  my new mozilla install?

I tried the suggestion below and nothing happened/ same as before, no change. How does
Sylpheed know where to find Mozilla? *Is there a config file?* Or can I type the path
directly in the dialog box?
Also tried having a Mozilla page open on the desktop, no joy.

In Configuration|Common Preferences| (press the little to see more,
 then) Other|Web Browser
  I'm using: opera -newwindow '%s'
you should try: mozilla -newwindow '%s'
I've not tried it with mozilla but the other goes straight to opera.

Hi Shane,

You're sure you've mapped\opened all the necessary ports for HL\TFC?

By default SNF allows any outbound connections, and lets established

Im not sure if this is even close (I built a couple of SNF boxes for

[newbie] XFree86 freezes

2002-06-02 Per discussione Andrew Berry

I am running:

Mandrake 8.2, KDE3, IceWM, XFree86 4.2.0.

Hardware:
P166 MMX
64 Mb Ram
120 Mb Swap
S3 Virge 2D card
Monster3D Voodoo1 3D card
Dual boot with Windows 98se using graphical LILO.

My computer seems to randomly freeze up. It stops responding to everything (mouse,
keyboard, CTRL+ALT+BKSPC). This only happens when I am running X11. I haven't found a
pattern that shows a specific app causing the freeze. I have had combinations of
IceWM, KDE2.2 and 3, running combinations StarOffice5.2, Konquoror, FreeAmp, and
Ogg123, open when a crash occurs. I don't think that its a hardware issue, as this
never happens under Win98SE, and HardDrake properly detected all my hardware. I have
tried looking in some log files in /var/log to find a pattern. No luck.

My questions:
1. Is there a systematic way to detemine what is causing the crashes?
2. What specific log files should I look at?
3. Anyone else had this problem? Fixes?

Thanks,

Andrew

I run in the Kicker ksysguard and system monitor to see cpu usage, memory usage, and
hard disk accesses. This morning I had a crash, and the frozen image on the kicker
showed about 25% cpu usage, 50% free RAM, and 60% free swap.

I've also had it crash while using IceWM.

Could it be a memory problem, as in running out. 64MB doesn't seem like
enough to run kde by itself, nevermind run applications on top of it. Of
course that's pure speculation on my part. I have a 300MHz PII with
160MB of and I find kde painfully slow. That's why I tried xfce.

Anyway, you prolly wanna look in /var/log/messages. If there are any
clues, they're prolly in there. You might also wanna run free and/or top
periodically to check your memory usage. HTH.

Re: [newbie] Dual CPU Query

2002-04-14 Per discussione Andrew Tuson

Thanks for your suggestions, but I haven't managed to get it working, yet.

The second CPU is working - it is recognized at boot up, and Windows XP Pro
recognizes that there are 2 CPUs.

I have tried booting with the Mandrake smp kernel and get the same result as
my own kernel; only one CPU is initialised.

Since both CPUs work with XP, it leads me to believe that it is a Linux
problem, not the motherboard or the BIOS.

will have to say when I try and run quake3 as a userright from the KDE

then it
can't open /dev/dsp... my sound

configuration through harddrake. Why doesn't the installation of drivers
for any particular hardware work unilateraly from user to user on the same
system. If I have to install it as root and only root then wouldn't you think it
should apply for that computer system regardless of whomever is to log on?

No running devfs=nomount will not break anything and in fact in 8.1 on many
systems it is a help. The drawback is that devfs is here to stay and
eventually the ability to load devices will be removed from the kernel and
be completely controlled by devfs.

For now if you want to try devfs=nomount, go for it.
I would change the hdd=ide-scsi append to hdd=ide-floppy and replace the
sda4 entry in fstab to that which Dennis noted. It could work, you won't
know for sure unless you try.

Are you running with devfs=mount or with devfs=nomount? With =mount
dev handles the loading of device modules, with =nomount the kernel
handles that task. I was able to get my drive working with
  devfs=mount.

Does ls -l /dev/sda give any out put?

Are you planning to get 8.2.?
I am not trying to pass the buck, but devfs in 8.1 is pretty
flaky but in 8.2 it does the job as intended, though it was
necessary for me to edit fstab and create an entry for sda4,
but the block device itself was created so it was not
necessary to screw around with MAKEDEV or mknod.

We may want to slow down for a minute so that we do not screw
 up your system too much.

Are you running with devfs=mount or with devfs=nomount?
With =mount dev handles the loading of device modules, with
=nomount the kernel handles that task. I was able to get my
 drive working with devfs=mount.

RE: [newbie] ATAPI ZIP drive not working under LM8.1

Charles...

I got all excited when I read your email, so I tried it in a hurry, and got
the following...

root.drewvogel:~$ cd /dev
root.drewvogel:/dev$ ./MAKEDEV sda\*
bash: ./MAKEDEV: No such file or directory
root.drewvogel:/dev$

So I tried...

root.drewvogel:/dev$ locate MAKEDEV
/sbin/MAKEDEV
/usr/share/man/man8/MAKEDEV.8.bz2
/usr/share/doc/MAKEDEV-3.2
/usr/share/doc/MAKEDEV-3.2/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.4.8/video4linux/bttv/MAKEDEV

So then I tried...

root.drewvogel:/dev$ /sbin/MAKEDEV sda\*
don't know how to make device sda*
root.drewvogel:/dev$

Now I'm stumped again, but I do appreciate your help!

Run Hardrake and see how many listings there are for your Zip
drive. It will be under the floppy heading.

 You should have 2.
One as /dev/hdd and one as /dev/sda.

If you only have the one, /dev/hdd then you will need to do
the following. Open a terminal and su to root:

  # cd /dev
  # ./MAKEDEV sda\*

Do not enter the # that is only a notation for the prompt.

The above will create the special device files for sda and
you should then be able to access your zip through sda4 using
 /mnt/zip1.

 #chown drewvogel.disc /dev/sda4

I'm not sure how to proceed. Can someone help?
Hi, take a look at your /etc/mtab, what does that say for the
zip drive? Let us know, this is nudging at my memory, seems like I have the
answer in my log at home. I'll check tonight if you don't have a solution by

[newbie] IDE CD Burner installation/use?

2002-03-18 Per discussione Vogel, Andrew (VOGELAP)

I've got a LiteOn LTR-12101B IDE CD BURNER installed, but I cannot burn to
the CD... There was a CD reader installed before (and it worked fine). I
want to use the excellent MONDO/MINDI (http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/) as
a system backup tool from the command line. I'd also like the burner to work
from within X, but my main concern is that it burns from the command line,
since the machine is primarily a server.

HardDrake 0.9.3 reports the burner under CD-ROMS as Unknown LITE-ON
LTR-12101B (the Unknown is for the Vendor), Device /dev/hdc, with a Bus
Type of ATAPI/IDE.

My /etc/fstab entry for the CD is:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto
iocharset=iso8859-1,ro,nosuid,noauto,user,exec,codepage=850,nodev 0 0
...but I don't know for sure if that's right for the burner. It was what was
in there when the previous CD reader was installed.

So, what I've been trying to do is to use Mondo/Mindi to create a test CD
image (saved as an iso file), which I would then like to burn to the CD
burner using CDRECORD (the tool specified by Mondo/Mindi). I don't know what
command line parameters to pass to CDRECORD...

Can someone help by telling me if my /etc/fstab entry is correct, and the
command line parameters to use to make the CD burner operate from the
command line?

Thanks in advance... This has been a frustrating problem!

[newbie] Linux-Mandrake TROUBLES

I am having THREE very persistant, very annoying problems with my

I'm using Sawfish 1.01 and XIMIAN GNOME 1.4 (I think it's that version; not

reader installed before (and it worked fine). I want to use the excellent

connections are still good. I've got a known good ZIP disk in the drive.

Must be a security issue. Set the security level down, I think that should

Did you set up the append=ide-scsi routine in lilo.conf? See
mandrakeuser.org for the gory details.

I just followed the steps at

[newbie] NVIDIA after Kernel update?

2002-02-13 Per discussione Vogel, Andrew (VOGELAP)

My Linux-Mandrake 8.1 PowerPack box was running NVIDIA drivers under X.

I just upgraded my kernel to 2.4.8-34.1mdk, and can no longer get into X. I
believe that I need to re-install the NVIDIA pieces, using
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2313.i386.rpm and NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2313.mdk81smp.i686.rpm
(by the way... How do I know if I should use the SMP or UP version of this
file?), executing depmod -a (which I read on LM's errata page), and
rebooting.

Is this all I need to do in order to get my X working with my NVIDIA card
again on my machine?

Thanks for the reply.

Since I'm a newbie (never done a manual build of the kernel!), I don't know
how to do it. Could you provide a clear, step-by-step guide for how to do
it?

Well, I believe those rpms were compiled for the stock 8.1 kernel. You will

probably have to download the tarballs or src.rpms and build them to your
new
kernel.

smp is for if you have more than one processor. There's a little bitty app
on nvidia's download page that will tell you the packages to install.

Hi All,

What can I do to speed up my constantly stalled cable connection. If the
slow down is Mandrake 8.0.

I seestalled near continuously in e-mail and Browser. And megabit
downloads take a day or two. The ISP convinced me it is my PC. At least I
expect the Linux PC should load continuously. Y/N

[newbie] 8.1 ZIP drive

2002-02-12 Per discussione Vogel, Andrew (VOGELAP)

I've got an internal ATAPI ZIP drive in my box (it's the SECOND device on
the SECOND IDE channel). Harddrake sees it as hdd. It used to work just fine
under 8.0, but since I did a complete wipe-n-install of 8.1, I cannot mount
it within Linux. The drive powers during POST, so I know the connections are
still good. I've got a known good ZIP disk in the drive.

Well, I'm not sure it makes any diff, but I think it's mount
 -t type dev dir.
 So, try: mount -t vfat /dev/hdd mnt/zip
if that works, fix your fstab.

Have you tried descending into the dev directory to find out
 if the partition
 devices are actually there?

 I.E.:

 ls -ail /dev/ide/host1/bus0/target0/lun0

 or:

 ls -ail /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0

After you verify that the device you are looking for is
 there, you then try
mounting it. Using the targets you found above.
