[AsburyPark] Re: Last Night's BOE meeting
Dear Frank, As only you could, you gave a complete, historical background on the status of the stadium, the ball fields, etc. The monitor, who didn't take the time to read or delve into the history, not only of this board, bur previous boards, before this one, who did NOT make the situation, that the current board is trying to wade through, but that the people of Asbury Park spoke, at the last election, hoping upon hope, that this board, would finally straighten out the muck, it unwittingly stepped into! Let me first send you and the board kudos, bravo, atta boy/girl, or whatever one does, when you can't see me, standing and cheering! For 4 long hours, for which none of you are paid, blood pressures soaring, hearts palpatating, with no CPR administered and for being able to walk out in one piece, my devotional prayers, were answered. It sounds as though our citizens and the current board, are on the same page, for once and for that, all of you should be commended. Talk about dotting your I's and crossing your T's, my next question is, how long does the contract on those lawyers, last? I can only think of the line, from the song, School Days; taught to the tune of a hickory stick! I would like to see the lawyers dance, to THAT! I will continue to don my Asbury Blue and Black cheering suit, for this Bishop's Team! Hoping you all have a Blessed Christmas Holiday! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, asburycheech [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Group Members: This is a relatively short report on last night's BOE meeting from a Board member who does not speak for the Board. The four and a half hour meeting began with a public hearing on the re-financing (legal term refunding) of all of the outstanding bonds we have been paying for. That includes the 1997 $2,000,000. bond issue and the year 2000 $1.3 million dollar bond issues as well as outstanding bonds from 1989 and 1994 (which involved the construction of the Bradley School). The current rate is 5.6% and the new rate will be between 3.5 and 4 %. Refinancing a total of $8.5 million in bonds at the new rate saves approximately $60,000. per year for ten years. Barbara Lesinski and I spoke of the commitment made to the people of Asbury Park when the 1997 and 2000 bonds promised not only a refurbished stadium but three separate ball fields (including a separate Little League field). Savings from the re-fi should first go to complete the promises made a decade ago. That was also the message from the members of the public who spoke at the hearing, including Danny McKee, the President of the Little League. The state monitor was even chastised by my neighbor and longtime teacher, Esther Kelso, who said Stop harassing the Little League! The monitor took that opportunity to say that he had been misunderstood, and that he never said the Little League could not remain at its present location. (Two words come to mind: Bull-ony). After the public hearing, the BOE unanimously voted to re-finance the bonds. The High School principal, Mr. Tyler Blackmore, then gave us an exciting presentation his plans to re-organize the high school and its faculty and student body into three separate academies for the 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. The first will be the Entrepreneurship, Business, and Technology Academy, the second Humanities and Fine Arts , and the third Medical, Science, and Engineering. Instead of traditional departments, there will be cross-curriculum teams of teachers for these themed academies. A closed session was held so that the BOE could discuss the status of talks with the Little League being represented by attorney Tom DeSeno, with whom a one-hour conference call was held earlier in the day. Without breaching the confidence of the closed session, it is safe to say that the controversy is now moving in the right direction. The BOE meeting resumed with a public comment session on agenda items. The first order of business after that was to appoint a new interim School Business Administrator/Board Secretary. Mr. James Cummings was appointed to that position at $600 per day. The vote was 8-1. He will not be required to attend BOE meetings, hence the reason for my no vote. Another vote of note was the vote to inform the suspended Superintendent, Dr. Lewis, that the BOE did not intend to renew his contract. Under the law, a superintendent must be told in the penultimate year of his contract (in this case the 3rd year of a 4 year contract) that the Board does not intend to renew, or else the contract is automatically renewed for the same perios of time (!) The vote to inform Dr. Lewis that this Board did not intend to renew his contract was 7 yes, one abstention (Mrs. Sanders) and one no (Garrett Giberson). We also voted to acknowledge the results of a state investigation into

Isn't it ironic? Tom was terriffic, back when the Mets were Amazin', the Yankees had Mister October, Reggie Jackson and other superstars, who were wiry, rather than buffed up! I met Daryl Strawberry, while I was at a luncheon, last year and he's still wiry, can probably still hit a bat, has a winning personality, gave me his autograph, because I gave him words of encouragement and told him to get his act together, because I believed in him, as do so many others! I gave him my Mama speech, the kind, older Black elders, are prone to do, when they love someone. I loved Thurmon Munson, tragically killed and I loved it, when Baseball was just a game, my boys played over in Neptune, in the Pony Leagues at the SAME ballfields, on Jumping Brook Road and Old Corlies ave. They looked like 2 little bobble-heads, in their uniforms! I began getting my tan in March, when the season opened. My youngest son, played Babe Ruth, until he entered Glassboro, now Rowan. You and I both know, that Jesus is the reason for the Season! It's what you, I and so many others celebrate. Let's remember that Jesus, the Nazarean, was Jewish, first and his followers, became Christians, be they Roman, Armenian, Coptic or Othodox Catholics, then you have your Luthurans, Presbyterians, Baptists, Episcapalians and any other Christian Faiths, that don't see themselves, as Papists. I had a menorah, until last year, when I gave it and the candles, to a Jewish boy, that works with my daughter, who was delighted, to receive it. It was from Israel. I just wish I had seen his face! It sits at his work station and he is teaching my daughter about the faith. Back in the 90's I came upon a street fair on 12th St., near Washington Square, bought a ton of beautiful things, the 2nd weekend in May, which I gave as Xmas gifts, that year, '96. This kindly old Jewish man, took me into the 12th Street Temple. We corresponded by mail and telephone, until he passed away. See, I see the beauty in everything. I will never forget his kindness. He found, that my name is Sharon Grace; both Hebrew and took to me. I still have his letters. Mario calls me Amazing Grace and I like that, just fine. Just celebrate whatever it is you like. Mario, Now THAT'S what I call good news! Every bit of technology used in this war and the wars of the 90's, like Gulf War One, were developed here at Ft. Monmouth, a 90 year old installation! It's like saying, Let's close West Point! Brooklyn Navy Yard, Philadelphia Naval Yard, The Coast Guard Station at Governor's Island, ALL closed, leaving only Maguire and Ft. Dix open in NJ, beside the technology end, Ft. Monmouth, left standing! A disaster, waiting to happen! See 9-11! What were Frank Lautenberg and Frank Pallone, thinking? They lay down and rolled over, accepting the figures fed to them from the BRAC, on how much it would cost to expand Aberdeen Proving Ground! Now we learned it will cost much much more! You uproot workers, who are mostly natives, or already retired military, working 20 more years to get a decent pension, besides the paltry one, they get from Uncle Sam! You ruin the economy in an already depressed area, leaving New Jersey bereft of one of their best economy and real estate boosters! If any of you have realtives in Maryland, let me tell you, it's the high rent district. My daughter lives in Montgomery County and it is one of the most expensive areas, in the country! Most of your foreign diplomats, CIA, FBI, Secret Service and Pentagon professional live in this county. Not all, but a majority. It's like the United Nations, but expensive! I shop at Food Giant and another food market, when I'm there, but I wind up going to Andrews AFB, to save money on meat, there! [AsburyPark] Re: PEE WEE
Very aptly said. This is all, if not most of the grievances I have, in a country that espouses, Liberty and Justice, For All, when nothing could be further from the truth! A country, so steeped in racism, that it just rolls off their tongue, naturally! I remember, when Nixon said, I Am Not A Crook! I knew he meant it literaly, but figuratively, he was! He stole, not money or goods, but the integrity of the American Spirit, using his Winning By Any Means Necessary, ideology, by spying on his enemies; his enemies being the American People, who he thought were too stupid to understand, what was really happening! The murder and assassination of JFK, soured me forever, that this was a country of laws. What are laws? They are meant to bring justice to those wronged by physical, mental and mismanaged force upon any citizen of these United States, by anyone committing an offense against another or a group. My understanding. Justice should be swift and undenied! There are those in this group, who proclaim, to not have a racist bone in their body, when if they play themselves back, would note the hypocrisy, they're denying. ALL of us harbor some racist views. It's called survival of the fittest! Those who have always been entitled, feel threatened, whenever another group, threatens, whether they will be denied that, which they've always enjoyed, whether it be a job, a school, a home, where the address is for the priviledged or a certain status in life. It all dates back to Europe, where monarchies reigned and if you were a part of the ruling class, you'd lie, steal or kill, to ensure your status! Isn't that what it's all about today? You are what you drive! You are, what you eat! How much money you make, where you live, how you live and who you dare associate with? If you're not at least a Christian, you're going to hell! That anything less, like a Bhuddist or Muslim, don't matter, doesn't count? Heaven forbid, if you're one of them Mormons! Ask Mitt Romney or JFK, a Catholic, in 1960! History repeats itself, over and over, again! The secrecy in this regime, the governments edict, that we don't NEED to know anything, except what THEY dictate, to a public, asleep at the wheel, because Government wants to nanny-sit, every aspect of our public and personal lives, by tracking everything we do, even this internet note, I'm writing now, to see who is on THEIR side and if not, subject to arrest, torture and possibly disappeared, by the Republicans and the Democrats, who are in bed together, to keep THEIR status, intact! All I have to say, is we had better wake up, before these new Nazis, shred our Constitution, which they already ignore and institute martial law, divide and separate anyone who is not toting the party line. This happened in 1933, to the German, Polish and Austrian people, when Hitler, virtually suspended and took over thier governments! The Bushes are originally from Germany and changed Busch to Bush. It's all online for now, but for how long? George W. Bush, tries to portray himself, as an old cowhand, but read where he was born, where he went to school, the affluence of his grandfather Prescott Bush, their relationship to the oil barons of Saudi Arabia and their relationship to the Bin Laden family, before 9-11. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to Osama, no time soon! We have sattelites that can read the numbers, on a license plate. You and I both know, they know, where Osama Bin Laden is and they're making sure, no harm comes, to him. Bush is tracking our phone calls, cell phones, EZ Passes and emails from Yahoo, MSN and Google. There are actions afoot, to track your debit, credit card transactions and other computer driven actions, that can be requested at will, bypassing FISA and any other agrencies, supposedly set up to thwart their efforts. Scary? It's already happening, with cameras surveilling your every move in Manhatten, supposedly to offset a terror attack! Where surveillance is needed, it's going begging, at the ports and the airports, that the Keystone Kops TSA, misses! Our local law enforcement officers all dress like para-military, designed to beat us back, from demonstrating in the streets, from lessons learned in the 60's! They taser anyone and have, for the least little infraction, such as the man who didn't speak English, was tasered to death, recently. He was Polish and couldn't understand English, had traveled to America, for the first time and had missed his mother's pickup of him, so now he's dead and his mother demands to know why! Blacks and Whites, are engaging each other in coalition, not for the first time, but because, we're ALL in this, together and all we want is Peace! Where did all the technical jobs, go? India, China and Ireland! Why? Cheap labor! Why are all of our kids, pets and ourselves in jeopardy, from illness? Lead paint in toys, plastic in our pet foods and biogenetic food, on our shelves, by

I like that, too! In San Antonio, across the street from the Alamo, is Ripley's Believe it or Not! You see some of the gruesome stuff, that's just in the window! Yeeech! And on the street, was a pink cadillac reportedly driven by Elvis! Next door to that, was a 50's type, movie theatre, with an old fashioned 50's Marquee, right downtown, where public transportation, dropped you off, etc. Didn't know until I visited, but what we think is the Alamo, is just the Mission Church, that once stood there. The Alamo, actually consisted of acres and acres of land, now commercially used in downtown, San Antonio. That old Mission, stood a mile back from, where the ramparts of the Alamo once stood, with Cannons at each corner. Don't believe me? Look it up! I was so proud to see the State Flags of New York, New Jersey and Louisiana hanging, for every man that served in the ill-fated fight. There's still graffiti on the walls and huge Bowie knives, on display in their cases. When I was a kid, with this vivid imagination, I owned a Davy Crockett hat and a rubber pirates' knife! Mario, For once, I read the APP, on the day it was published! I'm always behind, but I get enough news here, that when I read the paper, I sometime, get another take on someone else's reading. Boola Boola! My uncle Joe, who fought at the Battle of the Bulge, used to sing that song all day for us! He used to sing the songs, from the Jeanette McDonald films, ALL parts, until we had tears rolling down our faces, from laughing. On the song, Boola Boola, those were the only words, he knew! Imagine him, singing THAT, all day! For those who think me crazy, I think it's genetic, in my family! They were such an eccentric bunch of people! My Grandma, was very dramatic! A college educated Southern Belle, to the Max! You haven't seen Steel Magnolias, until you saw them! Very genteel, but FIRM! She ran EVERYTHING, with a steel hand, in a cotton glove! There ARE no dumb southern women, from my vantage point! On the school principal, I admire him, for getting off to a good start. Just showing the kids, that I care and I give a damn, speaks volumes! I've seen others try to do the same, but the system is geared to beat you down! I will pray for the success of a genuinely naive man, but since he comes from the valleys of California, he just might do it! As far as the board, just when I thought they were all getting along, I find that Frank D, is all alone. It must be because he is on the side for right! Mario, Boola, Boola, was before anybody's time! I echo your sentiment, too! Academics were the thing for me, too! Sports is the reward, for having done the work, first! Back in the 70's I saw nothing but kids who wanted to be a pro! My advice was, learn all you can, first so you enjoy the fact, that sports is the recreation deserved, for a job well done in school! I dunno, but I enjoyed cheering, knowing that, I missed the honor roll, by a few points! All A's and maybe a B+, kept me on the cheering squad! Without those grades, I was toast! No activities, except books, were it not for my fierce competiveness, in getting those grades! It guaranteed me, that I wasn't just a pretty face! My nemisis, was I had an older sister, who was skipped a grade, she was so smart! She graduated Xavier at 16, honor society, a debutante, her senior year, etc. I had to follow her example, because this was how parents raised their kids, back then. It was Be like your sister, which was no easy feat, for me. I had to put my nose to the grindstone, studing most nights until after 10PM, when there was mid-terms, etc. To my surprise, when you are a constant A student, you get exempted from certain exams, unless they are state mandated! I was one lucky kid, to have the kind of parents, I had. My father taught me Algebra, who without his help, I'd have been a bum, as the sisters would say! So no, I didn't become a bum, or the H word, so prevalent in today's society. The B and H words were for girls who didn't care about themselves. My mother said they were common! Funny, I never heard a boy say those words, only grownups used that language and rarely. I remember my Mom, calling someone a harlot and when I asked what it was, she rolled her eyes at me and said, you don't want to know! Sports are good for children. It teaches sportsmanship and discipline. How to be a member of a team, rather than a gang and making friends, for life. When an adult who could be doing something else, takes time, for kids, I call that love. It's sad, that the Little League Coach is going through something that can be made simple! This is what turns me off and wonder what the hell is going on in this town! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 11/27/2007 9:12:31 A.M. Asbury Park seems to be a front runner, when the team is good support them, when the show is Springsteen support him, but the little guys and the losers are just left behind. Fortunately for me, I taught in a system where academics were a top priority. Academics were complemented, not overshadowed, by sports; and more than enough parents were just as interested in Advanced Placement scores as they were in the game scores. You only need to watch what actually happened in Boston, during the Revolution and the gradual takeover of this country from its' original inhabitants, with broken treaties, to all out force to placing native Americans on reservations, where they still reside, to this day. All people who immigrated here, have been ostracized and discriminated against, beginning with the Indians and whatever flavor of the day, is. I don't believe in illegal immigration, for those, who immigrated legally and that's all I'll say on that. I also saw the American Prospect on Channel 13 and it dealt with the 60's, the radical left's attempt, to disrupt the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, the formation of the Black Panther's in 1966, in Oakland, the beginning of the 60's Women's movement, the assassinations and America's refusal to have a dialogue on race and the prison industrial complex and Reagan's stint as governor and how he tried to smother the civil rights movement on Berkeley's campuses in California. As a woman, I've never had any illusions, where most men want us. As a Black person, we take 2 steps forward and 10 back, as far as the Constitution representing us, as Americans. When the Panthers took up the gun, Reagan did his best to take them away and succeeded. You now have a NRA card carrying Vice President, who would shoot you, if you tried to disarm him, so who does the 2nd Amendment represent? Why we fight protects, those in power, by think tank appointees, elected by no one, making policy for the military and selling it through speeches, as original thought. Colin Powell found this out in the infamous UN speech, about yellow cake, which is a bald faced lie! I know that entry too! Hairy, isn't the word! I'm a driver for over 50 years, remember road courtesy, you know, letting someone into a lane, allowing them to get over, letting them turn first, because of backed up traffic and I still get honked, fists raised in the air, get cussed at, because I can read their lips, etc. Road courtesy seems to be a thing of the past, so when someone extends it to me now, I get all choked up, that there are still those out there, that were raised right! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It has always been the rule, that you yield to the left. If people were competent drivers, circles would be a wonderful thing. The reality is, most people can't drive, they just aren't competent. Jughandles are a great invention, they don't allow people to do stupid things as easily. They can be annoying, but they serve the lowest common denominator very nicely. One thing I wish is that NJ would just have a standard and apply it uniformly. Now you have jughandles in some places, circles in others and fully signal controlled 'normal' intersections with turn lanes and direction signals. It's bad enough being a 'local' to these variations, people from out of the area have no hope. I've quit riding my motorcycle here, I've given up. You are correct, but some drivers, don't yield to that rule! I seem to have a feel for what they are going to do, by the way I see their vehicle veering. Mario, No disrespect, but a picture, does not replace reality. There are red yield signs, on Rt. 33 West, making the dominant, county road, the yielder, instead of the inner circle, stopping, than proceeding with caution, traffic permitting. The flow west stops, causing a back up to Wyckoff Rd., where the traffic signal is. Imagine, approaching the Collingswood Cirle/roundabout, or whatever the latest trend, is. On the opposite eastbound lane, same thing! There's more traffic, going west and east than north and south, clogging up a main artery, which was tricky before this latest *uckup, if you pardon, the gutter language, but to a driver, it's scary as hell! You don't want to be rear-ended for YIELDING, nor do you want a left sided fender-bender, for the inside lane car, having the right of way! Either way, no matter which way you enter this roundabout mess, guaranteed to make a professinal driver wince, going around, will either end in a whew or an aw-shit, that was close, situation, if you manage to dodge the proverbial bullet! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 11/24/2007 11:11:09 A.M. It's the old, Catch 22! Damned if you do, damned if you don't! If you ever want to discourage and beat someone down, this is the way, to do it! Frank, I know where your heart is, Can this be resolved? Why does the little league have to pay to change an ordinance? How long has that field, been there? Someone broke the rules, a long time ago! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dfsavgny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Asbury Park Little League Runs Into More Obstacles by Board By TOM CARDINALE The ongoing renovations at the Asbury Park Little League field at Asbury Park High School have run into some new obstacles, according to Little League president Danny McKee. I've been working on this for two years and everyone was aware, McKee said. The school board voted that we could go ahead. McKee says, after meeting with school board member Frank D'Alessandro and the district's Assistant Business Administrator Michael Steinmetz on Mon., Nov. 12 he was told to move forward with the completion of the project. The lighting structures were en route from Iowa and set to be delivered on Nov. 15, he says, when he received a call on Nov. 14 from Aiman Mahmoud, the district's Head Business Administrator, advising him that he would not be able to move forward with the project. Mr. Mahmoud called on Wednesday and said `Stop everything' and I couldn't even store the lights at the field, McKee said. McKee said he believes Mahmoud, who has been a supporter of the project, was acting on instructions from someone from the board. They're always coming up with more hoops for me to jump through, McKee said. The latest issue, according to McKee, is that the board wants a soil test done on the field to ensure the sandy soil can support the lighting structures. However, McKee says that the electrical companies - Lucas Electric and Musko Lighting - have constructed similar lighting towers in far sandier locations. They've installed lights at the bay where they had to wait for the tide to go out to do it, McKee said. McKee says Lucas was aware of the sandy soil throughout the project and has planned ahead for it. He also said he looked into getting a soil test but discovered that it costs nearly $10,000, a cost that would be impossible for the league to afford. If I had $10,000 I'd do the soil test, he said, but I'm on a shoestring as it is. McKee says he hopes to convince the board that the lighting will be safe and secure using testimony from Lucas Electric. Lucas Electric; it warms me how they've handled it, they're storing the lights until it gets resolved, McKee said. The board, according to McKee, has also asked for information from the Little League. Information sought includes bank statements, how much money is in escrow and who will have a key to the field-house. The board also asked about insurance. I asked about the insurance issues a month ago and received no response, he said. Finally, McKee says, it was determined that the deed governing the land which the field is on would need to be changed in order for the project to be completed. He said that the deed prohibits any structures within 25 feet of the street. Under this rule the fence installed by the school is also illegal, McKee said. The school board wants the league, however, to pay the $300 necessary to change the ordinance, McKee said. If this is a microcosm of what's going on down there then they have serious problems, McKee said. The kids, who everyone is supposed to be working for, are nowhere on the radar. Acting School Superintendent James Parham declined to comment on the situation. I can't talk about that right now, he said. There are some legal issues that need to be addressed. McKee says his only choice at this point is to try his best to fulfill their requirements. I could hire an attorney but then what? he said. If I have to hire an attorney that's where I get off. The only reason I haven't given up is because if I do this project will never get done, he said, and everyone who read about it will say same old s different day in Asbury Park. Yahoo! When buying a house, I absolutely avoided Asbury Park and the sending district because the High School is now segregated. I know that many, many other people did the same. That wasn't the case before the RBR ruling. I went to APHS with the sons of doctors, lawyers and millinaire businessmen. Yes, having that demographic was helpful to the poorer kids. That's gone thanks to the ruling. Look at real estate listings. Many of them list private schools on the listing so as not to list APHS. I laugh and cry everytime I see it. Since Avon no longer goes to APHS, their real estate has skyrocketed, now topping $1 Million on the MEDIAN house sale, and holding steady in this downturn. Everything changed when the Commissioner ruled that RBR having a better music program than Asbury Park is more important than whether a black kid goes to a segregated school. Read the decision that Mario linked. That was the ruling. It's the most bigoted, racist piece of government work I've seen in my lifetime, and it is shamelessly ignored. It's ignored because those with the political power in the area benefit from the ruling (like Avon); those without the power suffer from it (Asbury). Just imagine the classic busing issue: If a primarily white school in the area was suddenly going to be filled with poor black kids from Asbury, people would go berserk. There would be all sorts of lawsuits to stop it, with claims of government interference, social engineering, and claims that the school's natural demographic should be preserved. That ruling by the Commissioner is exactly the same thing with the colors reversed. The NATURAL DEMOGRAPHIC of APHS was racially and economically diversified, just as Ocean Township is now. The ruling destroyed that by busing the white kids past Asbury Park to another public school in Little Silver. Who is going to file the the Federal Civil Rights lawsuit claiming de facto segregation (can anyone claim that wasn't the result of the ruling with a straight face)? Are the white parents who are avoiding APHS going to do it? No. The poor black parents? I don't think so. AP Board of Ed? No, too busy gossiping and in fighting to tackle something so serious and important. If APHS was naturally segregated by race, you wouldn't hear a peep out of me. Since it is racially segregateed by the government with busing to another public school, I'm confident my objection is on the moral high ground, even if I stand alone. Standing alone though, I'm starting to feel like I don't care anymore either. The state can keep the school segregated, Asbury Park Board of Ed (Bored of Ed?) can keep taking the Abbott hush money and not challenge the segregation ruling, and none of it is going to hurt me. Mario and Oakdorf, I agree wholeheartedly, having gone to all Black, albeit, private school. I don't know what the core curriculum is, in the AP school system, or how it's administered. I do know that an awful lot of money is sent into the district, because of the Abbott decision, but it appears, to be going down the drain, instead of into the heads, of our most precious resource; the children! It's obscene the dollar amount being spent and for what? I don't see any physical improvements to the schools facades, to blame it on maintenance. Is it the teachers, the methods, what? It's irksome to not know! Just a guess, but my fear is that a lot of blame goes to the teachers! I've known teachers, with one book and xerox copies, teach and the kids excel! Does this mean the kids are paying attention? I also know that most schools have a breakfast program, similar to the one started in the 60's, by the Black Panthers, emphasizing that if kids, are prepared physically, they will perform better, mentally! I'll bet you, I can walk into a Black Classroom, without any books and with positive reinforcement, the kids, will remember who I am! After a week of this, I'll bet that in 6 weeks, the same kids, will remember me, for the rest of their life! I have a message and the message is, you have to decide who you want to be, white, pink or blue collar, in life. I know it isn't that simple, but if kids go to school knowing that if someone gives a damn, you'll see it, hear about it and know! Just look at AP Pop Warner, no, look at AP varsity, because the same kids were coached by the same Pop Warner Coaches. Kids perform, when taught properly. Kids do better, when they know someone, gives a damn! When you tell kids, do good in school and you can get away from a bad environment, some, not all, will take you up on it. Kids, need life coaches and if you tell a kid how great they are every day, pretty soon, that's how they become! I know, I did it, for 12 years. Not one kid dropped out of school and they ALL graduated, on time! They became teachers, doctors, lawyers, advertising executives, etc. I know; I've attended many a wedding for one of the girls, I coached and told, that no one, was better/greater/smarter/talented/beautiful/, than THEY were! People thought I owned stock in Dunkin Donuts, Kentucky Fried, Tropicana Orange and Hawaiian Punch, for my famous tail-gate parties, after my girls performed! I used positive reinforcement, a smile and lots of hugs! When kids are taught music and dance in school, it prepares them to socialize, in proper company, in a proper setting. I learned the box step and square-dancing, sing a longs, etc. and in health class, we were taught why you wash your hands before and after meals, the rest room protocols, which is why to this day, I carry a pocket package of kleenex! 2 years ago, most of these kids were in the Pop Warner program! They're really special! This year, the Turkey Day game will be played in Neptune. It's an old rivalry! I know, because for years, I took one boy from Asbury and one from Neptune to Breakfast at 6:00 AM in the morning, down to the old L M Diner, on the Asbury Circle. Mr, Conti, the former coach of Asbury Park, then coaching for Ocean Township knew me from my coaching days in Neptune. This Poem is enscribed on the Statue of Liberty This poem is enscribed on a tabled within the statue. Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame. With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! cries she With silent lips. Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! Emma Lazarus (18491887) But NOT to Asbury Park! Jim, Keep Fighting! I am FOR you and WITH you! If you invested in a company that went bankrupt, who would you hold accountable? The voting majority of the Board of Directors, that's who. Since you (and others) would like some evenhandedness here, let me offer the following. You were the driving force behind shutting down the homeless shelter and your main argument was that Asbury Park has shouldered the burden of all the other surrounding towns for far too long. You said that it's time that towns like Deal, Avon, Belmar, etc. pull their weight. This is a fair argument. Now, in the same way that you do not want to carry another town's burden, they may feel the same way about us. To use your logic, every town that is helping to pay our bills could be saying, Hey Asbury Park, we are tired of paying for failed policies to the tune of $8 million dollars a year or more. Get your own house in order and stop wasting our hard-earned tax dollars. Given your stance on burden sharing, I would think you would agree with this sentiment. But, unfortunately, you are only evenhanded when it suits your personal agenda Paul. Here is the current state of our pending fiscal crisis. I spoke with a representative from the Department of Community Affairs yesterday at the League of Muncipalities Convention. The person I spoke with confirmed that we will be receiving $8 million in aid for 2008. That leaves us $4.5 million dollars short. Are you ready to make up this difference for us Paul? If it is passed on to the tax payers it will cost on average approximately $1300 more on your tax bill. It is no wonder that we are in the state we are in with people of your ilk believing that honestly stating the facts (regardless of who they implicate) and seeking solutions to our city's most pressing problems is irresponsible. I say, Play the tapes and HEAR, whose lying! The way this article is written, indicts a defendant, rather than have ALL of the evidence presented, first! Can Mr. Hamilton, get a fair trial? Who knows? Eicher, deputy chief of the special prosecution division for the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey. The corruption trial for former Asbury Park City Councilman John J. Hamilton Jr. began today with those words to a federal jury in opening statements. Hamilton's attorney, Michael Baldassare, countered that the U.S. Attorney's case was hanging solely on the testimony of FBI informant Robert Duke'' Steffer. In his opening statement, Baldassare called his credibility into question, telling the jury, Steffer lies.'' Why does he lie?'' Baldassare asked. That's what Bobby Steffer does.'' Hamilton has been charged with offering public, no-bid contracts to a demolition contractor in return for having his driveway paved. The contractor - Steffer - was working for the FBI, and his conversations with Hamilton were recorded. Hamilton has pleaded not guilty to the charge. The relationship between Steffer and Hamilton began in May 2001. That's when Vinny Baker, the owner of Jennie's Soul Food restaurant in Asbury Park, introduced Steffer to Hamilton, according to the FBI. Baker has been charged with conspiracy to extort and pleaded guilty to the charges. Hamilton told Steffer that he could find him no-bid demolition work in Asbury Park if in return the contractor agreed to pave Hamilton's driveway free of charge, according to a federal indictment. Steffer paved Hamilton's driveway, according to the indictment. Actually, the FBI hired a contractor, through Steffer, to do the work. When it was done, Hamilton asked Steffer for a receipt to make sure that we both are protected, according to a criminal complaint. An FBI agent prepared a computerized receipt for $1,000, which Steffer later gave to Hamilton. Hamilton took the receipt and promised Steffer that he'd get you some work, according to the criminal complaint. Yahoo! Howell said he believes the repeated vandalism is the work of neighborhood juveniles. You'd like to think it wouldn't be an adult, he said On Jan. 5, Milanowycz and her husband reported the first case of vandalism, which involved the theft of solar lights. Over the summer, the couple say vandals again stole and destroyed lights at the memorial, but this time vandals stole American flags that marked the stones affixed with names of the Howell residents who died that day. The Milanowyczs spent Saturday refurbishing the memorial and say they have spent close to $1,000 repairing the damage left by vandals over the past year Howell said he will discuss the latest attack with other members of the council to see what can be done to stop the memorial's defacement. It is never wise to punish the son for the sins of the father. Judge MM on what they are doing as though the slate with them is clean. Again, nobody will always agree with what they do but overall they seem to be investing and things are getting done. I wish we had five years back but we don't and it wasn't their fault. === Just some clarification as to the responsibilities/positions of the parties involved. Asbury Partners has the development rights in the entire Redevelopment Area (I'll give the boundaries if anyone is interested) They are responsible for assembling large parcels of property in the RA and selling them to 'real' developers. They own everything east of Ocean Ave due to the sale of public property by the City. That property is not in the RA and has not been rehabilitated as was promised. Madison Marquette is a partner of Asbury Partners with Asbury Partners holding the majority say. MM is in for the retail component along the beachfront (E of Ocean Ave). Then there's Paramount (N of BCH) Metro (C-8) and Westminster (Wesley) all of which are developing property that Asbury Partners received title to from the Carabetta settlement. No ED was used to acquire them. The point of all this - just to put it all in perspective while figuring out who to blame/praise for what's going on. (Ultimately, isn't it the City Council?) MM may lose patience as it loses more money. Metro is fed up with them as is probably the city. I met with the BCH people this morning on a NYC matter. Ultra deep pockets. They spoke to Partners and MM. They have no use for Partners. Don't believe a word they say. They are of the opinion that the city took it on the chin in this deal. I am passed placing blame. Somehow Partners has to go. Don't get me wrong - I recognize and welcome many of the improvements over the past year. What I am afraid of is that it will dry up and wither as soon as MM has had enough. Not that MM is a white knight, but I know what life and progress was under Partners alone. Hopefully I am wrong, but when I see extremely successful real estate people all come to the same conclusion my fear is reinforced. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Library Square Park update and Trinity Church Meeting
Jack, So glad to hear that you have connected with someone. I edited my reply just to say this. Yesterday I celebrated my anniversary, by going on an early Christmas shopping jaunt and lunch in Eatontown. We came through Sunset Ave. to Main St. At the light was the dog and pony show, the PD on horseback, a gross waste of money IMHO, but if this is what the residents want, who am I? Being of a practical mind, I could think of so many better ways the funds dedicated to this, could be spent. Having been raised in a large city, Cops on horseback were used during Mardi Gras season, when the Circus came to town and at the Superdome. Crowd control! Where's the crowd here? I've also seen mounted police at Veterans Stadium, during football season, yeah, I know it was torn down and at Shea Stadium, when the Jets played there! crowd control! Is it me or is Asbury, a gentrified fairy tale? I mean that literally, no puns or jokes intended! I'm serious! What a waste, as they trotted and walked down Main St. Couldn't wait, to get away from them. It's a shame and we allow it! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings, I'll like to update the group with things concerning LSP. First off, I'm continuing in my effort to get the lighting fixed. Reidy still hasn't returned my email, but I have had a discussion with his assistant about 2 weeks ago, but as of yet, still no progress with getting the lights fixed. I'll keep trying though, and I may have a meeting with JK very soon to discuss this. The PD has been patrolling the area since I found the hypodermic needle, and the ocean front security patrols have also expanded to the east side of the park. Since the cleanup of the park, no new drug bags have been found. Unfortunately, some of our residents still view the vandalized fountain and surrounding park as a dumping ground. Yahoo! Jack, Today, I went past the park, slooowly and I thought it was a disgrace! Not a light to be found! The plants? GONE! Not many people in the park, due to the weather, but it looks neglected! NO, it isn't YOU! What in the world is going on over there? But this town has cajones, for a dog and pony show, but not a sheckle, for a light, in what could be, a pretty, town square! SAD! Mario, I'm willing, because I have the time, to meet on a given day, place and time, to clean up, one block, one street at a time, like an improvement group, to make someone else's surroundings pleasing and sanitary. The dollar store on Main and Sewall, sells mops, brooms, buckets, etc., all for a dollar! My galley kitchen and bath, are the only 2 tiled areas, here. I even have a fake grass lawn, on the terrace! Don't laugh! Every summer I create a garden in the large containers I own, creating an oasis in the air! I had huge strawberries, tomatoes and chiles, along with wild flowers, ferns and summer plants growing like mad, over here! I am willing also to plant hardy mums and other seasonal plants, around time, with my 2 good hands and discretionary income, to create the town called perfect, because it's where we should all live! The little breakfast places around town, have the nicest people in the world, operating them, like Chat Nibble and America's Cup! It takes five minutes to scramble eggs and toast a bun, but it always tastes better, when someone else does it! At Sunset Landing, you get those crazy ducks! At Franks, you get the important people and the ordinaries, like me! I dream a world, but since it's just a dream, I try to live it, so Jack, whenever you're ready, I'll come with broom and rubber gloves to clean up! When it's time to plant, I'll provide some flowers! [AsburyPark] Re:Library Park
I've always given mine to the Salvation Army. Twice a year, I clean the closets out and good, clean, wearable garments, are accepted. You can also take a tax deduction. On the 1st Avenue side, is where you can take the clothing, shoes, appliances, knick knacks, aka dust catchers and Cha-chis, books, furniture, even canned goods, you don't want. Turned off by the food giveaway at St. Peter's Thrift Store, now, defunct, I began carting my stuff, over there, on Main St. Many staffers are volunteers and are very cordial and friendly. My organization, hosts, table sales, chinese auctions, etc., and I tend to buy the new things, like candles and gift sets. Many stores that have items they couldn't sell, wind up over there! Still in their packaging, brand new! I usually have 2 shopping bags, of new items, to generate sales. The money from sales, goes toward the general fund, that pays for postage, copy paper, etc. My organization, like the Salvation Army, is non-profit, all volunteer and lobbies for veterans issues. I collect white porcelain and have found really unusual pieces, over there, CHEAP! If you want to get rid of your stuff, take it to the Salvation Army. The clothing goes to families in distress, from fires, floods and other natural disasters. I had never been in the building on Asbury Avenue, until the fire, last month. I needed to get indoors, from the heat and found refuge there. I will never forget them, for the soft chair and the cold water. I wish everyone in this group, could send them a dollar! They really provided a safe place to congregate and rest, after standing outdoors, for hours. I think of the commercial played during Christmas, with their bell and donation holder. I'm so glad I never passed the pot by, without dropping something in. My daughter, who is 36, does the same, because I would always give her a dollar, to drop into the pot, when she was but a toddler. See, you have me all worked up, now! It must be why I love garlic pickles! When I lived in Florida, I'd drive 30 miles, past the Gator Bowl, to Jacksonville, to have a corn beef on rye, with a pickle! [AsburyPark] Re:Library Park
Just another observation. If you don't live on the West Side, you'd never know, but St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, has a fedding program, ONCE a month! The last Sunday, I believe. My girl friend is a parishioner and helps with the preparation and the serving. On Fridays, if you care, people form a line and receive free food, around 9:00 AM, until ??? The first time I saw this a coule of years ago, I didn't know what was going on, until I asked someone whose business, I patronize, on the avenue, as we call it. St. Peter Claver, had a similar program, when they had the thrift store. I stopped in to donate some clothing and walked in on the giveaway. Most churches in the area, have something, going on, which is funded by the government and distributed by the churches. Sisters of Mercy, were doing the same thing on Main St. and Bradley Beach, has a location, also. The only location, I see, having a potential problem, is Trinity, where they seem to congregate outside and I didn't know that this is what they were doing. ( I had observed people congregating,) as I drive past on Emory and Asbury Aves. The church on Grand Ave., gives flu shots and food! Had a part-time job there, a few years back and found out by chance. I had no idea, that practically ALL of the churches in this area, has this giveaway. Also found out that the poor go from location to location, collecting, these freebies. Being naive as hell and not in the system, an onlooker, like me, had no clue! Just cruise past 2nd Baptist, on Atkins and Springwood, on a Friday and you'll see. I am a Senior and have no idea, what's available for seniors, as far as recreation, etc. Seems you have to be 80 and above, to join in. Responsibility is a two-way street. You just can't operate something and expect local enforcement to clean up the mess. For instance, if I recall correctly, trinity was not allowing its patrons to use its restroom facilities. Well what alternative did the have? Library Square. That may have been remedied. Then there is security. let trinity provide it. I could go on but won't. I don;t see Paul's post contradicting the position of SUFA. That would ven be if it were decided that soup kitchens should be congregated in particular areas. Do onto to others as you would have them do unto you. I was taught to act in other's homes as I would want them to act in mine. Treat their property as I would want them to treat mine. I doubt very few indeed would allow or want what goes on by some around trinity by their own houses or in their houses. Don't to it to mine then either. Yahoo! I'm close to giving up. But before I do, I'm working on a meeting on Sunday with people from Trinty Church, so hopefully something good will come of that. Maybe I could convince them that a good incentive for people looking to utilize their charity services would be to equip some of them as volunteers to help clean up the park on a daily basis. Give them some clean up supplies and send them into the park. Maybe it would be good for both the people seeking charitiable help, as well as keeping an otherwise beautiful park clean. Of course, I'm constantly reminded of how Europe deals with their parks and street cleanup. And of course it takes money that we don't have. Anyhow, in most European cities, you will see clean up crews every single night cleaning the streets and parks, and emptying the trash cans. It's almost like what happens at Disney everyday. And from what I've seen from my many years spent overseas, people are less prone to trash their cities, so theres less crap to clean up. Yahoo! I don't know this for a fact and maybe someone out there knows, but with technology, the PD, may NOT have to ask, what your name is, due to the fact that caller ID, has been in the mainstream, since the 80's and was known technology at ATT, (experimental), but known, so they already know, that you are a frequent caller, may be seen as a nuisance, to them, but not to us. Authorities, forget, on purpose, how monies are derived to pay them and not necessarily from property taxes. State, local and federal taxes, are probably pooled to pay PD, Fire, etc., especially in AP, where firemen are paid instead of volunteer. Just saying that, to say, when you call in, you are seen as a frequent caller! Perhaps if more of us got involved and called, something, just might be done! Place yourself in their place, keep a diary of how many times a week, day, month, you call. Who knows, they may well be keeping tabs on you! Don't mean to run on, but I worked in Safety and Security, at one time in conjunction, with other managerial duties and I did keep a diary/record, of complaints/concerns. I'm not saying your calls weren't legitimate. You should also follow up with letters to the Mon. Co. Prosecutor/Sheriff, keep copies and retain a lawyer, on retainer, just in case. You may have legal recourse for the City not heeding your calls and JR, if you're reading this, please advise. Oops, forgot this is what you do for a living! Not looking for pro bono advice, but wondering whether we should form a safety coalition group, to show solidarity with Hinge on this issue! I live about 5 blocks from the park, never walk over there, but drive to the library, instead, but still interested in the welfare and safety of those living in proximity. I don't live on the West Side but I'm just as concerned for thier safety as I am for my own! I still drive everywhere from habit of living in the hills of Neptune, where EVERYTHING, was far away! One more thing, there is/was a citizens group, that is supposed to observe, the things that Hinge, keeps us informed on. Why aren't THEY patrolling this area? What is their purpose? I forget what they call themselves and they have an annual lights on march? When a little girl, was murdered, some time ago, a march was held and has been held yearly, in her memory. Her murderer, was never caught! I won't call her name, but if you've lived in AP 15 years or more, you know what I'm talking about. She was African-American and school age. It happened before the Louis Jordan era. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, rook782 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: One major crime related problem in Asbury Park is that we have our own private 911 center, instead of merging with the county 911 center. In addition, being part of the county system puts another set of eyes on what is happening in Asbury Park. It's crime and it's policing as well. Just think how these county dispatchers could link crimes that are happening outside of Asbury Park to ones happening inside Asbury Park. I.e. If not, why not? Are we to remain the whipping boy, for the State/County? How in the world, can we shed the image, when we still have problems emanating, from 1970, which were never addressed? Not asking you personally; just asking, is all. It's been 37 years, since the riot. The Mayor was just a kid, himself, when it occurred. [AsburyPark] Re: Living in a virtual world - the value of forums
Jack, Are you serious? I've said and so has others, that the Mayor, was born and raised here, educated here, is a veteran, having served honorably, is known by his peers, highly respected by the same and while having a message, still only has one vote! It sometimes appears that he is not outspoken, but he fervently works behind the scenes, is a child advocate, husband and father. He was the highest vote getter, making him the choice for Mayor, while the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Bruno, also born and raised here, a bit more assertive and aggressive than Mr. Sanders, made for two native born, home grown officials, in AP. You can't get more qualified than that! My opinion. I believe in my heart that they and the other three men, want a better Asbury Park. That said, we don't always agree on how to get it. I don't know where Mr. Johnson was born or James Keady, but they are legitimate residents, as well. Mr. Loffredo is/was from Neptune, but has been a resident of AP, for some time and is a homeowner. I highly respect him, personally. I don't always agree, with any of them, but I have been misinformed about issues also. What I'm saying is, I give them the benefit of the doubt. I can be wrong too! Sometimes, I think, we are a bit harsh on them, but it is believed that in all politics, those in power, sometimes feel, that their constituents, don't NEED or HAVE to know, everything! I say, the more OPEN government is, the less suspicious/secretive, or name calling, as in almost any adjective, the people you serve, are less likely to accuse! I am as guilty as anyone, when what we perceive as a bad decision; name some here_, are made and its' decided the less we know, the better! Voters are more likely to ask for a recall, special election, investigations, get the prosecutor or FBI involved. Some of the more rogueish incidents of late, were the surrounding of a residents home, from anonymous tips, the fear generated, when a representative of the FCC, sucessfully shut down a radio show, the false arrest of a citizen and incarceration, intending on shutting him up, permenantly, the repeated requests for surveillance of a public square, which should be one of the centerpieces in town, only to see the area, abused over and over, but have funds for a horse patrol; impressive, but of no use! Now that I've spoken my piece, my a$$, is probably grass, for using my right of the 1st amendment!
