[MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4 Matic Check Engine Light Code Question
Hi, I am getting the following Check Engine Code on a 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic using a "BlueDriver" Code Reader: 1 ME - Motor electronics ''ME97'' for combustion engine P0522 PRESENT The charge movement flap (cylinder bank 1) has a malfunction. (attached readout) The car does have an issue with the intake manifold flap that I am working on now. My question is that when I look up the Code P0522 for more information I get the following: DIAGNOSTIC CODE P0522: ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR/SWITCH LOW INPUT Apparently the "Code Number" is wrong on my Blue Driver code reader. I tried contacting "BlueDriver" customer service but have gotten no response. Any idea what the proper code number is for "The charge Movement flap (Cylinder bank 1) has a malfunction"? Re: [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic - Cold Start Hesitation? *********ADDED INFORMATION***********
Hi All, As suggested I brought my car to a mechanic to check out the live data with a scanner. There was one code that he said caused all the other codes to come on: P0522 - "The Charge Movement Flap (Cylinder Bank 1) Has A Malfunction". That code was one of the original codes which came on over a month ago when the engine started stumbling before I changed the coil packs and spark plugs. He said I needed "Intake Manifold, flap shafts, vacuum actuator and linkage" from Mercedes and the repair would take about 3 hours. I called a local Mercedes Dealer and he quoted me the following parts approximately $1,000: Remanufactured Intake Manifold - Part #272-140-24-01-80Gasket - Part #272-141-23-80Gasket - Part #272-141-22-80Gasket - Part #272-141-09-80O Rings - Part #013-997-90-45-64Hose Injection - Part #117-997-09-82 Anyone else have a similar experience. I wanted to get feedback before I order the parts. Is it possible that I changed the coil packs and plugs for no reason when this was the underlying issue from the start? Lastly I was told it was ok to drive until I make the repairthoughts? The car just will not pass New York inspection. [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic - Cold Start Hesitation?
Hi All, I recently replaced all the spark plugs and coil packs on my daughter's 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic w/110K. I had multiple codes after the replacement and with the help of the group finally determined that there was an issue with the "New" coil packs that I installed. I purchased 6 Bosch Coil Packs from RockAuto and the car runs great so I returned the others. Drove the car 300 miles ran great with no Check Engine Light! But. I have noticed an occasional issue with cold starts there is some engine hesitation. It smooths out pretty fast but today (28 degrees) there was an up and down with the idle speed and it felt like it might stall. I gave it a little gas and it ran great ever since. I researched a little and came up with a few possible suggestions to look at: - Fuel Filter- Fuel Pump- MAF needs cleaning- Fuel Injectors That's quite a range of possibilities! [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes Benz C300 4Matic - Multiple Coil Pack Codes After Replacement! Help!
Hi All, I replaced all the coil packs and spark plugs (Genuine Mercedes) on my daughter's 2011 Mercedes Benz C300. The initial reason which prompted the change were Codes P0300, P0305 & P0306 indicating cylinder misfires. The car had 110K so it was overdue plugs so at the same time I decided to change coil packs too. The car ran great with no issues or codes for over 200 miles. She noticed the check engine light came on last night so I ran the codes and there following coil pack codes now: P0352 Ignition Coil "B" Primary Control Circuit/Open P0355 Ignition Coil "E" Primary Control Circuit/Open P0351 Ignition Coil "A" Primary Control Circuit/Open P0354 Ignition Coil "D" Primary Control Circuit/Open P0353 Ignition Coil "C" Primary Control Circuit/Open P0356 Ignition Coil "F" Primary Control Circuit/Open I reset the codes and the "Check Engine Light" went off but these codes still read on the scanner. Car still runs great so I am at a loss as to what is causing these codes. I don't believe the coil packs could all be bad? Spark plug related? I checked and reinstalled wire harnesses too. Why did it run great for 200 miles with no codes? Any ideas? [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic - Code 0522 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor
I just finished replacing all the coil packs and spark plugs on my daughter's 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic w/110K miles to fix a few misfire codes that came on (P0300, P0305 & P0306). Job was fairly easy and the codes disappeared and the car runs great! At the same time it was due an oil change so I did that too. I change the oil every 3K and use Mobil 1 0W40. There are no check engine lights but now a scan shows a "Permanent Code" P0522 - Engine Oil Pressure Sensor". Being a "Permanent Code" I cannot clear it and see if it comes up again. It is a bit of a coincidence that after changing spark plugs, coil packs and oil change that code shows up? Any ideas of a possible cause and fix. I used a BlueDriver Scanner if that makes a difference. Re: [MBZ] Fw: 2011 Mercedes C300 4 matic - Genuine Mercedes Spark Plug Question ADDED
I couldn't post photos but the two boxes the spark plugs came in were different. On the higher priced ones the box was blue and white marked "Mercedes Benz Star Parts" and the Ebay ones came in a silver and white box I have seen for many years. A search of the internet showed the "Mercedes Star Parts" were: "Mercedes-Benz StarParts offer you new maintenance and wear & tear parts for older vehicles, specially developed for selected model series: Mercedes-Benz StarParts are aligned with the current vehicle value. High quality for price-sensitive customers, without compromising on safety." Makes sense that the Ebay silver and white box was new old stock. Decided to try the Ebay and hope for the best! Thanks for the feedback. Bob On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, 05:55:18 AM EST, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: The stuff on eBay is likely from a liquidator who bought up old inventory. I know a guy that does this and makes a good deal of money at it. I buy boxes of windshield washer summer concentrate for 20 pieces at $20 shipped to me. Take one out and inspect it. [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic - Spark Plug & Coil Pack Replacement Questions
Hi All, My daughter's 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic (110K) was difficult starting with the engine shuddering and check engine light came on. She shut the car off and started again and it ran fine. She said it happened a few random times in the past but the check engine light never came on and the car ran fine. I checked the codes and the following Confirmed/Permanent Codes were listed: P0300 - Random MisfiresP0305 - Cylinder 5 MisfireP0306 - Cylinder 6 Misfire Research shows it could be the spark plugs or coil packs. I am going to replace all the spark plugs. Should I replace all the coil packs at the same time or just Cylinder 5 and 6? The job looks fairly easy from videos I observed but the coil packs are pricey so curious if it was recommended to replace them all now? Any input on what parts to use? I looked them up on Rock Auto and FTC Euro and the price and brands vary greatly. Lastly any tricks to the install I might be missing. Thanks in advance. [MBZ] Fw: 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic Sport - Tire Recommendations *ADDED QUESTIONS*
Dan, The shop manager said the tires were wearing in a way that indicated it needed shocks? Does that make sense to you? I should probably get a second opinion on that too! A few weeks ago I drove the car and it was making a humming noise in the rear which was diagnosed by one mechanic as a bad wheel bearing. I took the car to a second mechanic who checked the car and said the wheel bearings were fine but it needed new tires which would fix the problem. The second mechanic had the car on a lift and showed me if you run your hands around the tire it has high spots which cause the noise. The car needed new tires so I had them installed today at Sams Club and the noise disappeared!! I am sure the front rims do need replacing because there was a very show leak from one of the tires that was coming from the bead. My daughter hit every pothole in NYC ! I had it remounted and it is fine for now. Thanks for the quick reply. Shocks are rarely replaced on MBs, they can often go for 200k and still work properly. If you want to be exact, check the part numbers on the front wheels and do an eBay search for them. Or, see if you can find a reputable wheel repair shop in your area. There's one in Tampa that can fix bent rims, weld, etc., etc., and guarantee their work as new. Last time I used them it was around $200/wheel which included refinishing. Anything you find used will likely need refinishing, and may not be true, either. -D From: Mercedes on behalf of Robert Koziak via Mercedes Sent: Monday, July 24, 2023 10:52 AM To: Robert Koziak via Mercedes Cc: Robert Koziak Subject: Re: [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic Sport - Tire Recommendations *ADDED QUESTIONS* Hi All, I had Continental Extreme Contact tires installed at Sam's Club a few minutes ago. Thanks for the quick replies! I borrowed another digital temperature gauge from a neighbor and the readings were consistently between 26 F and 36 F at "max cold" when checked at the four vents. I suspect the digital Temperature Gauge I had was giving faulty readings too. The AC feels great but I was just concerned about an overfill causing problems. AC is all about pressures and temperatures. It’s not something you can guess at and expect a specific outcome. And just as an aside, I suspect the 10 degrees comment was an embellishment rather than an exact reading. These systems have a low temperature cutout that would shut off the compressor if the evaporator freezes or temperature gets below a setpoint. There was a hack for the W126 chassis cars I used to do to mine: The compressor cutout on these was a mechanical switch connected to a capillary tube that was positioned between the evaporator fins in the heater box. It’s easy to remove. I think they typically cut out at 40F or maybe slightly below that. You could recalibrate them by putting the capillary into a glass of crushed ice/water to get it down to near freezing. Using a test light or an ohmmeter, you calibrated the switch to open at the lower temperature. Made a big difference in places like Florida, believe me! -D > On May 28, 2023, at 3:50 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > I don't think a car AC will ever blow as cold as 10 degrees F. [MBZ] 2004 Mercedes E320 4Matic Gas Door Lock Repair
Hi all, A few days ago I realized that the gas lock door on my 2004 E320 4Matic was not locking. It could have been that way for years. I have been searching for videos or suggestions on how to repair and had no luck. When the doors are locked and unlocked with the key there is no noise coming from the gas door lock area. Apparently there is an "actuator" that works a pin to lock the door. Any suggestions/instructions including part numbers would greatly appreciated! As always thanks in Advance. Happy New Year! The drilled rotors are really not necessary except for looks or if you intend to drive fast and hard on curvy mountainous roads. The solid rotors will last longer and so will the pads, of which ever kind you decide to use. I do agree that the Akebono pads are worth it for longevity and stopping power as well as being cleaner for the wheels. [MBZ] Mercedes 2011 C300 4Matic Engine Cover Question
Hi All, I recently did some maintenance work on my daughter's Mercedes C300 4Matic and somehow never replaced the engine cover. It's a mystery where it is?? I am getting ready to order a Genuine Mercedes OEM Engine Cover (MB#2720101067) for $80 but can't find the part number for the two silver clips. The clips attached to the cover and secure it to the top front of the engine. The best price I found was on Amazon and the clips are probably not included. [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes Benz C300: Code P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
Hi all, My daughter's 2011 C300 (90K) had a check engine light with a code P0410 indicating an issue with the secondary air pump. I replaced the secondary pump (which was evidently seized) and reset the code. Drove it about 50 miles with no check engine light so I returned the car and started a vacation about 4 hours away. She drove the car and a few hours ago and the check engine light came back with the same code. Should I have replaced the relay and fuse too? The fuse looked fine when I checked it before the repair. Does anyone have a schematic of the engine fuse box which lists the fuse and relay locations? I can't seem to locate a good one online. I have the fuse and relay so I could have her replace them and reset the code to see if that fixes the problem before I return in a week. The secondary air pump was replaced 6 years and 60K ago by the dealer under warranty. Is this a common problem? Thanks in advance for any assistance! It was my wife's car and she was complaining of little heat so I decided to change out the thermostat. Those 3.0 V6 engines has very little thin bolts holding down the thermostat housing. I managed to get them out without breaking them by slowly working them with heat and penetrating oil. It was minus 20 degrees and my garage was unheated. I must have been tougher back then. Why? Should I use gasket sealer? 2 - Torque specifications for the bolts etc? 3 - Any other suggestions, videos or instructions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. [MBZ] Issue......Online Parts Vendor www.mercedesgenuineparts.com !
Hi All, Anyone purchase Mercedes parts from an online vendor www.mercedesgenuineparts.com? I purchased a Genuine Mercedes belt tensioner and pulley for my 2004 Mercedes 320E on April 30th and they arrived on May 13th. I decided not to change the tensioner so I called the company and they said to send it back and they would refund the cost minus the shipping. I sent it back priority mail with delivery confirmation. It was received on May 20th and I called to confirm that it was received and find out when I would be reimbursed. The phone number listed on the website now goes directly to voicemail with no voice message and emails go unanswered. I tried a few letters vis US Mail with no luck either. After weeks of daily calls and emails I assumed the company went out of business and I was out the over $200. It's frustrating so I wanted to warn others about this vendor. [MBZ] 2004 Mercedes Benz 320E 4Matic Brake Question
Hi All, Yesterday I started changing all 4 rotors, pads and brake wear sensors on my 2004 320E 4Matic using Genuine Mercedes Parts. I ran into a few issues. 1 - I couldn't get the rotor screw out so I had to drill it off. Does anyone know the screw and thread size so I can tap for a new screw which I just ordered? 2 - The dealer supplied me with two brake wear sensors. When I took off the sensors on the front brakes they were two different sizes? Called the dealer who said they only stock one size and the second one was not needed. The two sensors are positioned at different thicknesses in the pads which trigger at different times. One is designed as an early warning half way sensor? Anyone else come across this? I ordered the second sensor and will install it anyway. Also are there two sensors on the rear pads and are they different too? I haven't started the rear brakes yet. Now that the filter is changed I will use a Mityvac to extract and replace fluid from the top a couple of more times since only a portion can be drained through the pan. I would be more comfortable with an alternate method to check the accuracy of both oil and transmission fluids. Thanks In advance. Re: [MBZ] Replacing combination switch E320
I just changed the combination switch on my 2004 E320 because the window wiper motor stopped working. It turned out to be a cut wire which apparently happened to quite a few vehicles. The new combination switch had a slight modification. The steering wheel does have to come off. I needed a pry bar and a little help to remove the steering wheel nut when I reached that step. There are quite a few videos on Youtube that had very helpful instructions. One work of caution is when you reach the removal of the "clockspring" step be sure to cautiously keep it in the same exact position. I thought I did but when reinstalling it made a clicking noise and the airbag SRS light came on. I needed to purchase a new clockspring to complete the job. Good luck! In addition, if the vehicle was built prior to September 2003 a modification has to be made to the steering cover shroud by notching out a section to accommodate the design of the new switch. There should have been directions and the plastic pin in the parts box for this modification but they were not. I reached out to the Mercedes Dealer and he said he was not aware of what was included with the part but will order another and check. This may take a week so I am reaching out to the list to see if anyone had a similar experience. Re: [MBZ] Oil Extractor
I second the Mity Vac 8 quart. Used it for years with no issues and 8 quarts worked well with my high capacity 2004 E320 4Matic. When I first used I TOO did the test to see if it removed more oil than the drain plug.. it did! Re: [MBZ] 2004 MB E320 4Matic Window Wiper Issue.....help!!!
Hi, Thanks for the suggestions with my 2004 Mercedes E320 windshield wiper issue. Tried everything I am resigned to changing the "Combination Switch" so I ordered the part (Genuine Mercedes $125.00). Does anyone know of any installation videos for this repair they can recommend? I am also looking for a good repair manual or technical online manual. I have used Haynes manuals for years but they don't make one for this car. [MBZ] 2004 MB E320 4Matic Window Wiper Issue.....help!!!
Hi All, Today I took out my 2004 Mercedes Benz E320 (89K) 4Matic for it's annual NYS inspection. The car spends most of the time in the garage with very limited use. I went to turn on the window wipers and they did not work in any of the positions. The wipers do work when I pushed in the arm to activate the wiper fluid for a cleaning. I don't remember the last time I checked the wipers. I checked the fuses even though the wiper motor did work in the wash position so there is power. Research pointed to a faulty "combination switch". [MBZ] Selling my 1990 Mercedes 300E (Smoke Silver) w/110K...$5, 500
I sent out a message for pricing for my 1990 Mercedes 300E a fews weeks ago and after research and feedback I am putting it up for sale at $5,500. I live in Hawthorne, New York 10532. It's in Westchester County 15 miles north if New York City. If anyone is interested or knows someone who might be please send me an email. For now I am just placing a sign locally and after time will try "Bring A Trailer" with Craig's List being a last resort. Thanks, Bob Hi All, I am looking to downsize my Mercedes hobby cars and sadly looking to sell my 1990 300E (Smoke Silver) w/110K. I am trying to determine a price range so I am reaching out to the group for some help. The car was purchased w/87K from the second owner in October of 2003. He was a college professor & fellow Mercedes enthusiast who bought it Certified Pre-Owned from a New Jersey Mercedes Dealer. The car has no accidents or rust and he kept great records. In addition to routine maintenance the following work was done by him: 08/01/97 w/57K- Due to a head gasket oil leak the Princeton Motors (Mercedes Dealer under warranty) replaced the head gasket, valves, timing chain, tensioner, thermostat etc. 01/15/98 w/62K - Mercedes Dealer replaced water pump under warranty. 01/29/98 w/63K - Mercedes Dealer replaced radiator under warranty. 07/31/03 w/86K - Mercedes Dealer converted the AC to R134. I was not a big fan of the conversion but the AC has worked great over the years! The original owner was an Electrical Engineer and added European headlights and switched the wheels to 1991 Genuine Mercedes wheels he preferred. I have detailed records. I drove the car only 25K in the 16 years I owned it and have many extra parts. I have done a little research and finding a price is difficult with a price range according to condition. Any help finding a fair price or pointing me someone who can evaluate it would be greatly appreciated. VIN - WDBEA30D0LB205946. Photos available. Re: [MBZ] Driving with excessive oil in the engine for 1800 miles!!!!! Possible Issues??
Thanks for the quick replies! My brother followed me home and noted no excessive smoke. I inspected the entire engine and there was no signs of oil leaking anywhere including the oil filter housing under the car. All thoughts appreciated. This discussion list has always been a valuable resource! Bob -Original Message- From: Peter Frederick via Mercedes To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Peter Frederick Sent: Thu, Feb 7, 2019 8:05 am Subject: Re: [MBZ] Driving with excessive oil in the engine for 1800 miles! Possible Issues?? High oil level can result in foaming since the crank will be splashing the oil badly, and that usually results in excess oil consumption through the crankcase breather. Bad enough the oil pressure will drop to next to nothing. Usually accompanied by large amounts of blue smoke since the oil going down the intake doesn't burn very well in a gasser. If the crank wasn't thrashing the oil in the pan, there would be likely no effect at all. I'd check the oil filter housing for signs of oil being tossed up out of the crankcase ventilation system (or wherever the crankcase ventilation system vents back into the intake, might be a vacuum fitting somewhere), but if it didn't blow blue smoke when you drove it home I suspect you got away with it. Damage from oil going down the intake would be excessive deposits on the valves, piston crowns, and in the cats and oxygen sensor, so if it runs well and gets normal milage I'd leave it alone. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] Driving with excessive oil in the engine for 1800 miles!!!!! Possible Issues??
Hi All, Sorry this issue is not related to my two Mercedes but there is no better place to ask for advice I recently purchased a 2014 Honda CRV with 14K through an estate sale. I know the family well so it's history is confirmed a one owner, no accident, low mileage vehicle. It had been sitting in a driveway for 6 months and needed a good detailing but looks almost brand new. When I went to pick up the vehicle I noticed the oil level showed a very high on the dipstick but all other levels were good. It was the coldest day of the year in the Northeast ( Queens, New York - 5 degrees) so I just decided to drive it 20 miles to my house before looking into it further. The next day I did an oil change and discovered there was 7 1/2 quarts of oil in the drain pan The owners manual calls for 4,2 quarts. I checked the records on the vehicle and saw the oil was last changed a year ago and had been driven 1800 miles since then. It looks like the repair shop apparently overfilled the oil during that change. There is no evidence of oil in the engine compartment and the car ran fine on the trip to my house. What damage could this have caused? Any precautions should I be taking at this time? Are their future issues I should be looking for or did I dodge a bullet because it is apparently running normal at this time? Thanks in advance for your help! [MBZ] Genuine Mercedes Benz Tire Valve Stem Caps Issue
Hi all, I purchased genuine Mercedes Benz logo tire valve stem covers last year for my daughter's MB 2011 300C. Went to check the tire pressure because she received a warning message and all 4 of the caps were basically sealed to the valve stem. I had to force them off with a pair of pliers and the plastic broke (yes they are made of plastic). There is a white powdery pitting on the threads that I lightly wire brushed off. Still not not perfect but I was able to carefully force on the original metal caps I had taken off. First time I every experienced that issue and wanted to reach out to see if others had too. Any suggestions on what the issue could be along with ideas on how to clean the threads would be appreciated. Along with thoughts on what to purchase for replacements. Hi All, I am having an issue with the speedometer on my 2004 E320 w/88K. [MBZ] Oil Change Question - Mity Vac Extractor
Hi Guys, I recently purchased a MityVac Oil fluid extractor to make my Mercedes oil changes a little easier. There has been some concern throughout my research that it doesn't get enough oil out and the plug is the best method. To test that I extracted oil from my 2004 E320 4matic and then removed the oil plug to see how much was missed and it was about 1/4 of an ounce. I did spend about an hour insuring that all the oil had returned to the pan after I warmed it up and the ground was level. I am getting read to change the oil on my daughter's 2011 C300 next week when she visits and here is my question: Should I change it on level ground or will parking on a hill either facing up or down potentially remove more oil? I have a steep driveway. I am basically trying to figure out if the dip stick (where I place the extraction tube) in the front, rear or center of the pan. Anyone know if that would have made a difference when I changed the oil on the 2004 E320? Also what is the oil capacity of the 2011 C300? Internet research gave me two different capacity numbers. Obsessive I know... Re: [MBZ] 300D
Jamie, A few weeks ago I finally sold the 1983 300D w/220K I had on Craig's List for over 4 weeks. This was the car a friend of yours looked at but decided not to pursue. I had very few inquiries until finally a current 1983 300D owner called. He came to look at the car and we spent two hours discussing common issues we encountered with our cars and how we fixed them. Every current issue/problem I mentioned his reply was no big deal. He paid a fair price and was such a pleasure to deal with that I threw in several hundred dollars worth of parts I accumulated in over 20 years of ownership. My point being,.. I am glad I found a person who appreciated the merits of the older Mercedes Benz diesels. Your honesty and integrity wasn't appreciated but don't feel bad you just found the wrong buyer. I should have known, when he started asking questions after we made an agreement. I actually thought about calling it off, but I decided not to since he saw the car in person, drove it, and had mailed a deposit. Anyway, he's claiming that it starts poorly in cold weather and has low compression... as low as 200psi warm. I think I started him on his road to suspicion when I explained to him that the car has a block heater. I told him I've never used it, but if he has the time and the temperatures are below 20, its a good idea to use it as its much easier on the engine when starting. I explained this in a thats what its there for way, but I think he interpreted it as theres a problem and this is the bandaid I always let these cars glow about 5 seconds after the light goes off, press the accelerator down a bit like it says in the manual, and crank. This car always started easily, and ran smoothly immediately. One of the better ones I've had, actually. Conventional oil, 15F... it doesn't get much better with these cars. I'm at a loss. I can deal with the guy having issues inside his own head, but when it comes down to suggesting I've misrepresented the car, I take great offense. Re: [MBZ] *** New Issue - Help!***2004 E320 4Matic- ABS ESP Malfunction Question
I haven't has time to pull the wheels and clean the sensors. Running the car for 250 miles didn't clear up the issue either. I read that a low battery might have caused the issue so I am going to test the battery and alternator tonight. I am at work and was advised that my car had a muffled alarm noise coming from under the hood. When I checked there was a low alarm noise (varying in pitch, intensity and duration) coming from under the hood around the fuse box but I couldn't pin point it. It was sporadic and happened when the car was both off and with the engine running. Suddenly it stopped about an hour ago. Any ideas on what this could be? Related to the ABS/ESP malfunctions? Battery issue? Where is the alarm siren located? Thanks in advance. [MBZ] Selling 1983 300D Help dertemining price!
I am selling my 1983 300D (w/202K). It is a daily driver and I need help determining a fair price. It is runs great. The paint and body show their age with a little rust under one rear wheel fender, otherwise hard to tell it's over 30 years old. I owned it since 1990 w/ 78K (second owner) and have changed the oil religiously every 3K with Mobil 1 Synthetic. I kept great records since I owned it and have been part of the cult following for these vehicles that will last forever. I made numerous (expensive) attempts to get the A/C working and finally gave up last year when it failed. I live in Westchester County New York and if anyone on the list is interested send me your email and I can give further details and provide photos. Recent work: New Battery 4 Michelin (Harmony) tires April 2013 (191K) Front Brakes - April 2013 (191K) Valves adjusted - May 2012 (185K) New Injectors - February 2012 (182K) New Glow Plugs - November 2011 (181K) I am selling because I just purchased a new car and one of my three old Mercedes had to go to make room. This is the lowest in the pecking order. [MBZ] Oil Dip Stick Question 2004 E320 4matic
Hi All, I know that 2004 E320 4matic doesn't come with an oil dip stick but I read that one could be purchased so I researched and bought one that was supposed to work. I chose one made by a company named Kommen - Model #KM808-M. I changed the oil a few days ago and completely drained the oil and replaced with exactly 8.5 quarts of Mobil 1. My issue is that the instructions for the dip stick say that for my Mercedes should have high level reading of 16.8 cm and a low reading being 14.8 cm. My measurement reads 11.0 cm and I am not sure why. I did an electronic check with the car's computer and it comes back OK. Any suggestions? Has anyone purchased a Genuine Mercedes Dip Stick? Re: [MBZ] 1990 MB 300E - Running rough, hesitation...head gasket??
After a few suggestions to look at the head gasket possibility again, I did. The oil is very clean but the coolant reservoir is about 3/4 low although very clean. The head gasket was changed by the dealer at about 73K but that was over 10 years ago. The car was in storage much of the time since then. Is it possible I was chasing the wrong issue when I had the sudden the hesitation in acceleration? There was a slight white smoke when I first noticed the hesitation but it has gotten much worse. There is one thing to note there was never an issue with the engine temperature, it was steady and within normal range. Is there a test to confirm that exhaust is mixing with the coolant and it's either a bad head gasket or cracked head? If it is the head gasket can I drive it to a repair shop for repair considering it's not running hot or will I potentially cause more issues? What can I expect to pay for a head gasket replacement? Overall the system is not that complicated but diagnoses is easier with the right tools and knowledge. There are flow charts out there for the steps needed to diagnose the KE-jet but they assume the availability of the correct tools. By the sounds of it there is something major wrong, even if the system goes into fail safe/limp home mode, it should still not bellow out smoke, especially white smoke. As the system falls back to K-jet mode and will be running a little rich. White smoke is coolant being burned in the combustion chamber. http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/3662/car-smoking-from-exhaust-pipe/ A head gasket RR on a M103 is not difficult and should not be that expensive. The special tool required is a 12 point hex socket, which is not expensive and you'll need a head gasket kit, which is also not expensive. I oil has not got into the coolant, you won't need to flush the system but grain the oil and remove the filter before doing the gasket, as the filter gets in the way. I prefer to drop off the manifolds from the head, as that makes pulling the head off easier, some prefer to leave the manifolds on, works either way. Re: [MBZ] 1990 MB 300E - Running rough, hesitation...head gasket??
I did not run compression test yet. There have been no visible leaks in the engine compartment. The only sign signs I saw was liquid dripping from the exhaust and the white smoke. I was on my way to work this morning when I made the discovery that the coolant level was down 3/4 inch in the reservoir. -Original Message- From: Gary Hurst jabbahur...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Mon, Mar 10, 2014 9:15 am Subject: Re: [MBZ] 1990 MB 300E - Running rough, hesitation...head gasket?? i'd think about $1500 what are the cylinder compression numbers? have you made any effort to figure out where the coolant is escaping from? Re: [MBZ] 1990 MB 300E - Replaced Fuel Distributor - Running rough...help!
I was able to start the car this morning and let it run for 10 minutes hoping that would get some air out of the fuel system. That was a suggestion in the instructions from the fuel distributor rebuilder. After a few minutes I saw there was an excessive amount of unburnt gas coming out of the exhaust and under the exhaust itself. When I tried to accelerate it immediately stalled out. Being a safety issue are there any adjustments to correct that or should I have to get it towed to a shop? The gas did a job on my new sealed driveway in a short period of time.it was that much getting through. OK I am not sure what differences there are between the US and Euro model 300E, we got the Euro version here, however I don't think there any 'major' differences. The US and Japan 103.983 engines got a MAS relay for some reason, apparently pin 1 is battery, pin 2 is feed to fuel pumps http://www.autolib.diakom.ru/CAR/Mercedes-Benz/1993/190E/SYSTEM%20WIRING%20DIAGRAMS/4410.pdf Lots of stuff here http://w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/Index/103index.html A new fuel distributor may well need adjusting, which is done with an allen key down the top but should really be be done whilst reading the lambda codes. http://w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/103/07.3-2053.pdf Have you checked your electrical bits? The 103 is well known for having problems with the dizzy because of it's location. My advice to people generally is that if you don't have the tools or know how to diagnose the system, take it to a good shop which knows the Bosch systems and has experience. Money spent on replacing parts which may not need replacing is better spend on good diagnoses. Ohh and another clue, a KE jetronic system will generally run, even without EHA valve, O2 sensor, coolant temp sender (these bits where added to turn K into KE), this is why MB stuck with it for so long, very reliable system but not that efficient. The addition of the O2 sensor (plus bits) helped to make it a little more efficient, K jet is supposed to be tuned every service.
