I tried to put LILO on my system and went through hell to get EZ-Drive to reinstall for the sake of Windows. Don't even try all of that, just use a bootdisk. All you have to do when the system boots is wait for the EZ-Drive dialog to appear before Windows loads, and press CTRL, then it will tell you to either press A to boot from the floppy drive, or C to boot from the harddrive; that is when you can insert your bootdisk, then press A, and linux will boot from there. It is possible to boot directly from the bootdisk and skip all of that (I presume), but it is better to be safe, right? I have a Genuine Intel Pentium 60 MHz processor. I contacted PB support a while ago about my system (which is past waranty), and I was told that it can be upgraded to a Pentium 120/133 MHz processor. I have upgraded my modem, which is connected to the same riser card as the soundcard, and even moved both of them to better slots for me to access; they are the only two things connected there. The original CD-ROM drive was connected to the soundcard, but I attached the new one directly to the IDE controller. I have not upgraded my video card, but the current one is built into the motherboard. As far as the soundcard, I did a ROM upgrade to make it full-duplex. It's an Aztech Sound Galaxy Washington 16, which is practically a SoundBlaster 16. All that to basically say that there has been no need (yet) for me to upgrade that. Manny Styles [EMAIL PROTECTED] Manny, I guess I have the same old PBell. Where did you get the upgrade for the sound card? I never could get my sound card recognized under Linux, I wondered if that upgrade helped or how you did it. I replaced the card w/ a real SB 16 I got used. I do still have it and would like to use it. As for the CPU upgrade, I occasionally see the right chips on eBay, but they are something like $120-175.A bit too much for that old PC. If you are interested it is the Intel Pentium Overdrive processor #PODP5v133 . That will take yours to 120 MHz. Later, Brian Kelsay Y2K Flunky I found the Aztech website, and from there found the upgrade (after much searching) in their support area (of course it's a Windows executable). I could send you the file directly if I still have it. I believe it also gives you sound tools to do wav. recording and such. If I ever find over $100 lying around and can sneak it out of the house (hehe), I might consider that processor upgrade. There is much to be said for some extra RAM though, even my little 40MB worth. Manny Styles [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yes, joe is using the updated kernel. If you had even bothered to read the message this has nothing to do with init scripts or improper shutdowns. This has to do with linux locking up like everyones favorite OS. That and the fact that linux does not always recover well from these lock ups. For most of the newbies here coming from the aforementioned OS, these lockups seem normal. The truth is, it shouldn't be locking up at all. I have seen at least 5 on my own box, saw two on two other boxes. Wild bill at the linux bits has been plagued with all sorts of lockups(newbie) on his athena box(using redhat I think). I couldn't dial up and etc. So I logged in as my wife to send this and short of doing a complete reinstall of Mandrake 6.0 I thought I would as you guys. By the way, Star Office still works in root, so evidently I didn't un-install it after all? Thanks in advance for any help. Lawrence Hettinger When you start the install script from the command prompt in Konsole, you use the /net switch to do the network installation so that more than one user may install and use the program. # ./setup /net This also saves disk space so that you don't have to do a separate user installation for everyone. Once this installation is complete, you run Staroffice (it'll tell you the exact file and location after the /net install) for each user. It will use the same files for everyone's installation, and store your user files in the the folder you specify (preferably in your user's directory.) I look forward to seeing the browser improved with the next reincarnation of mandrake. Rick "I don't want to swim in a roped off sea," JB Rick hit it on the nose. I'm assuming that David was using former versions of Netscape which were still buggy. Netscape 4.61 is stable. One thing though, you don't need all three Netscape rpms. You definitely need netscape-common, but besides that, you only need netscape-navigator if you just want the browser, or netscape-communicator if you want the full suite (browser, mail/news reader, and Composer). [newbie] A Response (was Modem difficulties)

So, forget all these .config files we seem to have to manually edit with wonderful devices such as VI. [BLEAH!!] You know, there _are_ more intuitive editors out there--lots of them, in fact. I like pico, but kedit is pretty good as well. Of course, there aren't that many cases any more where you _have_ to manually edit the .conf files, as software like linuxconf and others tend to work as well. Also, I guess this means you've never had to hack the Windows registry? Nope. Never have. In as much as I'm comfortable using regedit, I've never had to use it to get something to work. That's not the point. Having to manually edit things was one of the major downfalls of OffulStinky/2. Then, of course, they were plagued by bad management, marketing and just a plain gawd awful stupid looking system. Heck, I'm running 2000 release candidate 1 now. Yes, the betas had their problems. But, that's why they call them BETA!!! When you can make a version of this Linux, whether it be Red Hat or Mandrake, that's better at plug 'n play than Windows, maybe more of us will start using it on a more pronounced basis. "So, quitcherbeleakin" yourself. Linux is getting much better at PnP, though it admittedly isn't to the level of Windows yet. Windows isn't anywhere near the level of the Mac, either, so why are you holding Windows out as the holy grail of PnP? Because it is. Unix has been around eons before Mr. Gates' MSDOS or even Windows. You'd think that someone would have gotten it right by now. Gates took the MacIntrash environment and made it work. One of my many employment endeavors was collecting shareware and freeware for the PC, Mac, Amiga [now THERE's an underrated machine] and the Atari. I've been there, done that and saw the movie. My first computer was in 1979. It was a TRS-80 Model I Level I with 16K of memory and the only storage device was a casette recorder. That was back just before the Crapple ][ came out with it's TRS-80 wannabe style. I'm wondering if you are always in this kind of mood. Is it possible that you weren't good at that whole customer relations thing? Whose fault is it really that you have hardware that isn't supported by linux? Did you even take the opportunity to research what you needed to run linux? Did you check to see if your hardware is supported? I spent quite a while downloading Mandrake, and reading this mailing list getting info and researching the OS before even begining to install it. I found out what I would be up against, and I asked my questions and got useful, and respectful answers. Your attitude is not productive at all. Everyone tries to help and all you do is snap back. For someone who was in tech support, I would think that you'd be more understanding. Did you appreciate the kind of attitude you exhibit from your ISP's customers when you were trying to help THEM? Look, every OS is going to have it's shortcomings, not all of which can be helped (especially with a GNU licensed OS, that has people taking their own time and working for free to build a community and a philosophy). Maybe this isn't the mailing list for you, and maybe linux is not the OS for you. If all you want to do is bitch, save us the trouble and the bandwidth, and do it in the mirror. I could be reading e-mails that will help me to further my linux knowledge, and spending my time responding to someone who can and will use the knowledge I have gained to help themselves. I am not doing this in a mean spirit in the slightest; I just believe that we should be dealing with helping each other, not squabbling. Re: [newbie] Changing the Window Manager
- Original Message - From: Matt Stegman [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, August 20, 1999 8:45 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Changing the Window Manager Steve wants to know how to start a different window manager from the command line, not from within KDE (or booting to initlevel 5). Right, that's what `desktopcfg` does. Well, kind of. It is a console utility that allows you to change your default desktop- your choices are GNOME, KDE, AfterStep, or "Plain X11" which means fvwm2, I think. If you run desktopcfg as root you may change the system default. And since you asked... Another way to change the window manager that starts when you run `startx` is to put a command in ~/.xinitrc. This file is a shell script run after X has started (it is usually what loads a window manager). `desktopcfg` uses this file to start your window manager (WM). You may safely delete this, and specify your own script. Mine follows: #/home/matthead/.xinitrc exec kde I think that I'm going to replace "exec kde" with "exec enlightenment" as I'm tired of KDE, and would like to use Enlightenment for a while. The only thing I don't like is that you can't move windows around in the pager (a point for AfterStep, 'cause you can in there!)... but that's off-topic. Yet another way to specify a window manager to run with X is by appending it to `xinit` (`startx` is a shell script that runs `xinit` with some default arguments). Try, for instance, `xinit /usr/bin/enlightenment` This will start X and then run the Enlightenment WM. Because of the way `xinit` interprets your arguments, you have to specify the full path to the program you wish to run in X (it doesn't _have_ to be a WM). It doesn't even matter if the path to the program is in $PATH. If you're interested in the why, try `man xinit`. Which window managers are included with Mandrake? Here's a few (I installed the extra window managers package, so all these may not be on your system): /usr/bin/enlightenment /usr/bin/gnome-session /usr/bin/kde /usr/X11R6/bin/AnotherLevel /usr/X11R6/bin/afterstep /usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm /usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2 /usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker I'm sure there are more. Also, gnome-session starts GNOME, which is not a window manager, but rather a "desktop environment." This includes the panel, the right-click menu on the desktop, the icons, and more. GNOME uses Enlightenment as it's WM by default, but can be configured to use WindowMaker, or some other WM I can't remember right now. The same goes for KDE, execpt that I don't think you can successfully use any WM other than kwm, which is KDE's default. This is probably much more information than you ever cared to know, but it's still not all! However, I'll bet `desktopcfg` is plenty for most people. The thing is, if you want more control over what happens when you start X, well, you've got it. This is one of many advantages that Linux has over Windows: the freedom of choice. For any given task, there are usually several different ways to accomplish it, each with it's own unique advantages disadvantages. This means you can find the best way to get a job done- you're not locked into someone else's idea of "the best way," like you are with proprietary systems (Microsoft being only the most prominent). -Matt Stegman [EMAIL PROTECTED] For myself, thank you. I did not select "Emulate 3 button mouse" on first try, but did later. Both selections resulted in the mouse acting as a simple two button mouse (the centre button does not work, nor does pushing both buttons at once). Murray Strome The generic selection should work for most mouses. You should never select 'Emulate 3 button mouse" when you have 3 buttons. Unlike Windows, the middle/third button is not for double-clicking. In linux, when you highlight text, it is automatically copied. The middle/third button is used to paste that text. I have been generally extremely impressed with Mandrake, however I have noticed a few strange occurences. 1) I have always operated in runlevel 5 and used the Mandrake logon screen to shutdown or reboot my machine. Now I have rarely rebooted, however on the two occasions I have used the Mandrake Shutdown button to reboot, the startup process informs me that hda1(hda6) was not cleanly unmounted and proceeds to run fsck. Not a problem in itself, but I hate it when something doesn't work as it is supposed to and I don't know why. This same problem also occurred the single time I tries shutdown -r now. 2) On some occassions this same problem has occurred when merely booting up the machine. I know fsck is supposed to run after a certain number of mounts, however this problem has been occurring at irregular intervals sometimes as close as three boots apart. I stress that I always shut down properly, using either the Mandrake Shutdown button, or occasionally shutdown -h now. 3) This fsck has never caused me much trouble until last night when the fsck indicated a large number of errors including a reference to /usr/share/config/kdmrc (I may have this path and file name slightly incorrect. I apologise I am writing from work 12 hours later). It also made reference to a saved Civilisation - Call to Power game. When the fsck was complete the boot up process, which always indicates everything OK, came up with a FAILED message. I believe it said (again it was a while ago) that it was unable to read /usr/share/config/kdmrc. The next indication of something amiss was when X flashed up with the standard KDE login screen instead of the Mandrake screen. Using the Kpackage program I found the package that is responsible for the /usr/share/config/kdmrc file. It came up with a cross instead of a tick. Thinking I was clever I reinstalled the package and rebooted. Alas no change, the boot up process still indicated a failed read of /usr/share/config/kdmrc and I still received the KDE login screen. Further investigation revealed that /usr/../kdmrc was a file of size 0. Also, I think the saved Civ CTP game has disappeared. My question then is - how do I get my beloved Mandrake login screen back? Win9x friends laughed when I had to su root etc to shutdown and now I have got my own back I don't want that Shutdown button disappearing. Also what is causing these random fsck's? I have heard that there are some file system problems with 2.2.9. Is this the cause? Will the Mandrake kernel update solve the problem? The file names I have stated MAY BE INCORRECT. I aplogise for this, however I am hoping that the description of my problem will be enough to give you an idea of its likely cause. Thankyou PS As a quick query - why, whenever I add any new users to my system does KDE give me double icons for everything, one in upper case, one in lower (CDROM cdrom, PRINTER printer) ? It never happened for root, nor the non-privilleged user created during install. The problem is in the 2.2.9-19 kernel. You need to get the kernel and initscripts updates to correct this (I suggest getting all of the other updates as well). As for the dual icons, you must not have formatted your /home partition, which is fine. Just delete one of each of the icons, the other will still work. I guess that's convenient but -I- wouldn't pay $70 for it. :) So it's a nondestructive partition resizer? That doesn't sound exceedingly hard to write. I mean, shouldn't fdisk be able to do this? I understand that it's still *much* easier to reformat everything, but moving data... The snag is that it'll take direct writes. It shouldn't be too hard to grab one block of data and move it over some on disk. If they overlap, start from the other direction. Use memory, too, when the overlapping gets to be too much. What more is there? Well, I'm no programmer, but it must not be terribly difficult as I have a couple of programs that do similar things. But Partition Magic is still the best, and comes with more than just the partition creator and resizer. I have Partition Magic 4.0 which has a Windows and DOS version, and works on ex2fs. Through creative searching, I did not pay for it (shhh), but it is hard to find. There are shareware or freeware programs like Partition manager and FIPS which will also create and resize partitions, but you don't get the nice GUI and there is some knowledge that goes into it. In RedHat mailing list it was unearthed that in a significant number of cases Windows 98 (but not 95) gets annoyed sometimes at sharing the drive with Linux and corrupts it or wipes it out. 98 never bothers a second drive. Hehehe. I'm glad I don't have to put up with 98! My question. On my PC, I have two hard disks installed. The first one is--get this--125 MB or so. Has anyone tried to install Mandrake for Windows? It's listed as lnx4win under Mandrake/6.0pre on the ftp mirrors. I am not starting another 'MS trying to get into the Linux market' joke. I have downloaded it and plan on trying it out for myself. Seems like a nice alternative for newbies who want to test the system first (and better than most UMSDOS installations). Let me know your experience with it. Manny Styles [EMAIL PROTECTED] Always and Never are two words to always remember never to use. NetZero - We believe in a FREE Internet. Shouldn't you? Re: [newbie] Mandrake for Windows
No joke at all. I still have to use Windows, for one because of my ISP's software, but I was in the process of downloading the pre-release of Mandrake 6.0 when I noticed lnx4win. From what I have read, it will put a Linux shortcut on your desktop and you can load it from Windows. Re: [newbie] Mandrake for Windows
No, this is actually something different. If you have ever heard of a UMSDOS install, I believe this is similar (I did it with Slackware a while back and got nowhere). UMSDOS basically creates a linux file system on a Dos partition with no partitioning, deleting Windows files, or formatting a linux filesystem. - Original Message - From: Arnold Kelly [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 12, 1999 11:26 AM Subject: [newbie] RedHat 6.0 revisited I just installed RedHat 6.0 on my system and I'm pretty impressed with it! I can only imagine what Mandrake 6.0 will be like when released!! :) I noticed some of you had tried RH6 and was wondering if you knew how to change the "default" X Windows Manager when you use the XDM to log in? The default is Gnome, of course. I don't mind having to manually switch to KDE, but would like to know how to make it the default without having to go through the extra "work". I've only looked at Gnome for a brief moment (when I decided to see which X was "default") and it looks basically like a "Gnome-ified" version of KDE. :) Hope someone can help. Thanks! Arnold ___ I haven't tried to switch desktops, but after customizing Gnome, I really like it and actually perfer it to KDE. I still do switch back and forth though because of the programs that are dependent on KDE. Still very much looking forward to the final release of Mandrake 6.0 though. (Now that I think about it, I think KDE is the default on my system) Manny Styles [EMAIL PROTECTED] NetZero - We believe in a FREE Internet. Shouldn't you? Re: [newbie] Linux Install Question

I am installing Linux on a second hard drive. I am using a floppy boot disk to install Linux. How can I get the install program to use the files from the dos disk for the install? Near the beginning of the installation, it will ask where the files are located. Select Hard Drive and you're all set! -- Steve Philp [EMAIL PROTECTED] It actually turns out to be a little more difficult than that. First off, name the folder with the installation file RedHat (maybe you named it "Mandrake" like I did). Also, make sure you make a Supplementary disk (the image should be listed with the boot image). Next, you need to download a file named MV and place it in the RedHat folder (you can find the file with Lycos FTP search (under the advanced search). The file may be downloaded with .html as the extension, ignore the Windows warning when you delete that extension after the download is finished. Start the installation as normal, and when asked where you are installing from, select 'hard drive', at which time you'll need to insert the supplementary install disk. After setting up your partitions, you'll be asked where the RedHat directory is located (let's say /dev/hda1). Type that in, then press ALT+F2 to get the command prompt (#). (I'll try to show it as you should see it). At the prompt, type (do not type #): # ls /tmp/hdimageEnter (you should see all of the files on the harddrive where your RedHat files are located) Next type: # umount /tmp/hdimageEnter #mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /tmp/hdimageEnter (if you get an error message, retype it replacing 'vfat' with 'msdos') now type: # cd /tmp/hdimage/RedHatEnter # lsEnter (you should now get a listing of the files in the RedHat directory...rpms, base, mv) type: # ./mv rpms XEnter (you can type 'ls' after this command to see that rpms is gone and X is listed) # ./mv X RPMSEnter (definately type 'ls' this time to see that rpms and X are gone and RPMS is there) # cd / # umount /tmp/hdimage At this point, press ALT+F1 to return to the installation screen. On the line asking for the RedHat directory, leave it only showing '/'. Press OK, and the installation should continue from there. If you have any questions or problems with these instructions, you can e-mail me. ~Manny Styles [EMAIL PROTECTED] NetZero - We believe in a FREE Internet. Shouldn't you? Re: [newbie] setting up WinE
I'm having difficulties setting up a user account. I type "/usr/sbin/adduser -p [the password I want] [username]", but when I try to login, it tells me that my password is incorrect, and I'm sure I typed it in right. Is there something I didn't do to set up my user account correctly? Any help on either problem would be appreciated. It's actually very simple to set up an account for youself. I haven't done it for awhile, but I think it goes something like this: useradd manny passwd manny retype passwd It's done! Login as you normally would (as manny) -- Lloyd Osten [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Actually, I got it working now. The problem seemed to be that my home directory was not being created, but I have that problem fixed now. Thanks for the help. NetZero - We believe in a FREE Internet. Shouldn't you?
