[newbie] MP3 repair utility, anyone?
Does anybody know of a quick and easy MP3 repair utility, please? I've got a set of MP3s that are showing the wrong bit rate (showing the minimum bit rate of a VBR file, that being 32), and is showing total lengths in the range of about 18-25 mins (whereas they're all in the 2.5 - 5 min range). MP3_check is showing the correct info for the files, but Amarok is reading the incorrect data (and just for these files). TIA for any good hints. If they have sound quality problems, then I would just rerip them using grip, as I have never had a problem with that software. Rob Nope, those would have been easy fixes. I've attatched an example of one of those viewed in Easytag. The results are about the same in Amarok. This is a VBR file with a bit rate of ~224, which should be way shorter than 16:33 mins and which, when played in Amarok, is way shorter. The file is confused internally, as far as I can see, not in the tag. -- 16:30:01 up 10 days, 10:48, running Mandrakelinux release 10.1 (Official) for i586, kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk Registered Linux user #324360 I stood on the leading edge, The eastern seaboard at my feet. The devs did some major optimizations of the sqlite engine and it is very fast now. Also, with respect to mysql, you need to create an empty database called amarok first, then load amarok and tell it to use mysql. I thought sqlite was choking on the amount of mp3s I was asking it to read in, so mysql was the alternative. It turns out that might not be the problem, since mysql hasn't been able to do it either since the 2nd beta, and the final merely disappears about 30 secs after it begins re-building the collection, no matter whether I use mysql or sqlite. The main problem for me now, with respect to mysql, is that I can't tell whether it's actually running or not. The service is running, according to MCC, but webmin is not seeing mysql as active, nor startable via mysql start. I think I might need to research mysql a bit further. Re: [newbie] Installing only the kernel.
Mike; If you'd follow up on the information you got in your What Is URPMI? thread, you'd be able to urpmi kernel and have a selection of kernels to install (which would install next to whatever kernel you're currently running.) Everything from kernels optimized for memory above 1 gig, 4 gig, or 64 gig, or optimized for multimedia or motherboards with multiple processors. The easiest way to do all of this is to install some urpmi sources (in other words, mirrors from which to download these kernels) using the easyurpmi site (http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ , then follow directions). Then open up the Mandrake Control Center, click on Software Management, then Install. After you get a listing of the packages available in the left window, search for kernel by typing it into the box, then selecting search. Voila, you've got a list of the various pre-compiled kernels available. If you see one you like, put a check in the box next to it, and select install. The software takes it from there. I think you originally asked about patching the kernel. Sorry, I can't help you there. If you're wanting to compile from scratch, you'll need to google for instructions. That's beyond this list, and is not necessarily for the faint of heart. Have all the commercial vendors become Linux-friendly all of a sudden ? Kaj Haulrich. Saw this over on cooker ML yesterday (posted by a Clive Dove), in case anybody needs a flash player source. BTW, they decided that posting it to contrib wouldn't be a good idea, since the flashplayer is not open source: In a thread in alt.os.linux.mandrake, Gary G. Taylor pointed to a fedora site with package flash-plugin-6.0.81-1.i386.rpm Accordingly, I checked with the Macromedia mirrors and the new version is there in both rpm and tarball packages, The mirrors are: USA West - http://sluglug.ucsc.edu/macromedia/site_ucsc.html USA East - http://ruslug.rutgers.edu/macromedia/site_ru.html Hawaii - http://macromedia.mplug.org/site_uh.html Europe - http://macromedia.rediris.es/site_ri.html I have downloaded and installed the rpm package and have removed the old libstdc++210 package and the flashplayer works fine without the old library. Perhaps the new version should be added to the contrib mirrors. Anybody running the subject combination under Mdk? I'm moving from West Texas to the Denver, CO area (finally some scenery) very soon, and am wondering if there are any gotchas I need to watch out for. Verizon DSL has been absolutely no problem and I'm hoping that this setup will work as easily. I've got Verizon's DSL modem plugged into my Linksys router, then into my various computing devices, with the router handling the DHCP negotiation with Verizon. In my mind, the Qwest setup should be just as easy, but I'm hearing that MSN insists on some sort of Hotmail web setup for email, vice a POP server. Any truth to this?
