Re: CCTV application
Hi Shelly and Glenn, I was told that many low vision users liked the VisionAssist app. You can also use it wirelessly with an Apple TV to show a magnified image on your large screen TV or monitor. In addition, your zoom and pan can be frozen while you make adjustments to contrast, and the display mode has different color, contrast, and highlighting settings. In low light settings you can use the LED (on iOS models with flash) to increase brightness. Controls are large, and everything works with VoiceOver. It's a universal app for both iPhone and iPad. .• VisionAssist by SlinkyWare ($5.99) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/visionassist/id502356279?mt=8 You can also read more from there web page; http://visionassist.slinkyware.com/ There are also a lot of magnifier apps that we're not specifically designed for the other CCTV-like functions. Here's another popular one: • Lumin by Mahboud Zabetian ($1.99) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lumin/id480343142?mt=8 It's also universal, but relies on using the lock screen button and then zooming the image with inverse pinch gesture. Re: click mouse keystroke
Hello Zack and Others, My experience is the same as Anne's: having VoiceOver on works with all these key combinations such as Control-click and Option-click. The only other possible issue I can think of is how your cursor tracking options are set, since if you use a mouse or trackpad and have these two tracking you might be able to inadvertently move your cursor off the element you want if you don't press down directly for your click. But I agree with Anne that as long as your mouse cursor is routed to your VO cursor (VO-Command-F5), holding down the control key and pressing down to click the trackpad works for me with VO on. So does Option-click. Cheers, Esther On Nov 13, 2012, at 07:38, Anne Robertson wrote: Hello Zack, VO does not prevent control-click or Option-Click from working. Re: Mounting EXT3 file system
Hi Sean, I don't think the Paragon software for ext3 files has worked for any systems above Snow Leopard. You can read ext3 file systems (the native Linux format) under Lion and Mountain Lion if you use OSXFuse instead of MacFUSE. Some people also report being able to write to ext3, but results vary on that, depending on specific configurations, and it can be slow. Here's the excerpted basic information and the source URL. I've also emailed you separately off list a few more source documents. Source: http://blog.applegrew.com/2011/12/access-ext3ext2-file-system-on-mac-osx-lion-10-7 begin quote ACCESS EXT3/EXT2 FILE SYSTEM ON MAC OSX LION (10.7) Posted by Nirupam Biswas on Saturday, December 3, 2011 On Mac if you want to access ext3/etx2 filesystems, which are used by Linux systems, you will find lots of links on net but all are pretty outdate and they don’t work for Lion. So, here is the updated version, which works. At least for me. You will need two softwares:- OSXFuse – Download link.https://github.com/osxfuse/osxfuse/downloads Fuse-ext2 – Download link. http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/fuse-ext2/fuse-ext2-0.0.7.dmg?download Download and install them in the sequence shown above. Fuse-ext2 needs MacFuse to run, but this is no longer maintained and does not work on Lion. OSXFuse is the next generation MacFuse, but Fuse-ext2 is not meant to work with this. Fortunately OSXFuse includes “MacFUSE Compatibility Layer”. Just make sure to select this option when installing OSXFuse and you are good to go. When both of them are installed, then try plugging in ext3 or etx2 partitioned disk and they should get automatically mounted, just like any other disk. Note, after installing them you may or may not need to restart your system. PS. You will be able to read the disks but not write to it. As of now write option is not reliable. end quote HTH. Textilus, RTF editor app for iPad free today
Hi All, The Textilus app lets you create and edit RTF files that are synced through Dropbox on your iPad. It is normally $4.99, but is free for a 24-hour period. (I think that means about another 10 hours.) Here's the URL at the iTunes Store: • Textilus - Word Processor (RTF Writer) by knowtilus (normally $4.99 - iPad only) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textilus-word-processor-rtf/id537818639?mt=8 This is not perfect, but it's the most promising RTF editing app I've found for use with VoiceOver on iOS, and I haven't found anything similar that works well with the iPhone or iPod Touch. You'll find there is a boink sound as you enter text - this seems common to a few other such apps for RTF I've tried, including some that immediately crash if VoiceOver is on. Scott Howell has been in touch with the developer, who is interested in improving the experience for VO users. Please refer to my archived post about this app from the viphone list for details: • Re: RTF Dropbox editor . http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone%40googlegroups.com/msg20310.html Sorry for the late notice but my first attempt to post went astray. Re: Ntfs for Mac Os 10
Hi Sarah, You're pointing to the AppleVis post by Chris (Hallsworth) recommending the same Paragon software Gordon mentioned. At least, that's what he linked to. I didn't realize that Gordon was looking for something to both read and write to NTFS formatted volumes, because I've known that people were using that as a solution for some time (at least 2 years or more), and that includes some other list members. This is different from enforcing cross-platform compatibility in FTP and SFTP transfers, which has been previously mentioned on list, and is another aspect of the FUSE (Filesystem in User Space) effort to make the cross-platform use and transfer of files Transparent. The big problem is that the original MacFUSE project ended around Fall 2011, and there have been a few successors, both commercial and free. I found the earlier free MacFUSE implementations tended to be much less stable than the commercial efforts. HTH. Re: iPhone Speaker not working.
Hi Lewis, Another possibility to try before deciding whether you need a replacement: I believe that Geoff Waaler had an instance where his iPhone 3GS would not play through the speaker, and after doing some research on the web, he determined that sometimes dust lodging in the input jack area can fool the speaker switch into behaving as though headphones were connected. He was able to get the speaker action back by by quickly inserting and pulling out the jack end of the earbuds or headphones several times in succession. He did this several times in succession, fairly fast, and pushing all the way in, as though he were trying to ream out the region where the plug connects. This apparently dislodged whatever dust particle was triggering the iPhone to behave as though headphones were plugged in, and allowed the sound to get routed back to the speakers. Normally, I suggest doing a hard reset, where you hold down both the home button at the bottom and the sleep/wake button along the top edge simultaneously, and keep holding them down until the iPhone completely powers off, then power it on again. However, you've already tried this, so I'll make the suggestion about trying to dislodge any dust that may be in the region where the headphones plug in. If Geoff reads your post he may be able to give other suggestions. HTH. USB ports on recent Macs can supply more than the USB standard power [was Re: IPad isn't charging: what the heck!]
Hi Chris, You wrote: • So I wonder then why the macbook would charge it but not any windows machine? Do macs tend to put out more vultage on their u s b ports? Wonder what the amount of ampiers is it outputs. The answer is that the standard USB port specification doesn't provide enough power to charge iPads. That's one of the reasons that all the early generations of iPods (way back before the iPhone or iPod Nanos) used FireWire connectors. But they moved to USB connectors when iPods became popular on PCs, and the lower power draw of these devices made that possible. Recent model Macs are designed to detect when iPods and iOS devices are connected that require more power draw to charge than the default USB standard adopted by most PCs. Depending on the load of what else you have plugged in, they will attempt to provide it. Macs made before 2007 do not have this capability. Here's a quote excerpted from an iLounge article: • Charging your iOS Devices on a Mac or PC by Charles Starrett, September 1, 2011 http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/tips/comments/charging-your-ios-devices-on-a-mac-or-pc/ begin quote On Macs newer than 2007, all your USB ports should supply at least 1100 mA of charging power to any device—such as an iPhone or iPad—that needs it. The extra power is doled out on a first come, first served basis, so the first device you plug in is virtually guaranteed to receive the maximum amount of power, while later devices are less likely. If you have a Mac that was built this year, it might even support full 2.1 Amp fast charging of the iPad. Mac users also have a very simple way to check how much juice each device is receiving. Simply go the the Apple menu, select About This Mac, and hit the More Info… button, which launches System Profiler. From there you can select USB from the sidebar under Hardware, and select the device you want to check on. It’ll show you the Current Available, the Current Required, and the Extra Operating Current—by adding the Available and Extra Current together, you’ll get the current power output for that port. For more info, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049 end quote The Apple Support document provides more specific details, but basically, the standard USB port specification doesn't meet the requirement for charging high-powered devices. You may get some low level of charging if you connect to your PC's USB port with your iPad device turned off, and no other USB peripherals connected. Recent Macs are built to supply more power through the USB ports if iOS devices with higher power requirements are connected, but that assumes that you don't have large numbers of other peripherals also powered from these ports. Re: Can you run a Mac Mini without a moniter?
Hello Kristeen, For current generation Mac Minis, I believe the only way to run your Mac without a monitor (and not get the constant busy messages when using the web browser, iTunes, or other such applications), is to use a connector to your device that simulates a hook-up with an external TV. You can purchase such a VGA-to-NTSC connector from Sewell Direct: http://sewelldirect.com/pc-to-tv.asp This connects onto another Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter that you buy separately from Apple. I think these adaptors are about $30 each, so if you want the portability, it's possible to get the Mini to perform without a monitor attached. Take a look at John Panarese's article, Adventures with My Mac Mini at his MacForTheBlind site: http://macfortheblind.com/?p=591 (I just do a Google search on mac4theblind Mac mini to find the page.) John's article has links to the components you need, although I've copied the link to the key connector above. If you have the very latest Mini, you should check with Apple that the Thunderbolt port supports an attachment to the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, although their product web page claims compatibility. Then you could put the Magic Trackpad someplace safely out of range of accidental touches. A low tech solution someone suggested was to cut a section of heavy paper towel and tape it over the Trackpad region. The claim was that Bounty paper towel is thick enough so that the Trackpad won't activate when accidentally touched. I haven't tried this myself. Anne's correct that there doesn't seem to be a way to otherwise disable the Trackpad. I recall that Gordon asked about this for an earlier version of Mac OS X. HTH. iTunes navigation [was Re: iTunes Question.]
Hi Jim, What do you mean by easiest way to return to the source list in iTunes? If someone is completely lost in the iTunes window, pressing Command-Option-F, which is the shortcut to move to iTunes' search text field, followed by a navigation command such as VO-Right arrow (or just Right Arrow with QuickNav on), or a press of the tab key, will always work to move to the source list. If you're moving between a songs list for your Music library or playlist, then you can use VO-J to jump between the two tables. A very convenient way to navigate in iTunes is to switch your tab key behavior to move between text boxes and lists only instead of all controls by pressing Control-F7. Then you can simply press your tab key to cycle continuously between the search text field, the sources list, and the songs list -- or you can use Shift-tab to move in the reverse direction. If you toggle on your column browser with Command-B, in order to search or select more specifically by album, artist, composer, or genre, then using the tab key will also move you through any of these categories that you have enabled for your column browser. So, for example, you could select tab to select an artist and then a few specific albums by that artist in the column browser lists, and then continue tabbing to the songs list and have all your selections show up. The one warning about using Control-F7 is that it changes your tab navigation everywhere. So if you expect to use tabbing to move through all controls in another app, or perhaps when you navigate a web site, you should make sure to issue another Control-F7 and check that you've changed this behavior back before you leave iTunes. The place where this is setting for tabbing is established can be hard to remember: it's iSystem Preferences Keyboard under the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. There's an entry for Full Keyboard Access: In windows and dialogs, press Tab to move keyboard focus between: and radio buttons to set this to either Text boxes and lists only or All Controls. Another quick tip for iTunes and the search text box. If you want to quickly search for something in the iTunes Store, rather than in your own music library, you can use the search text field (Command-Option-F to go there), type in your search terms, and then hold down the Option key while you press return. This directs the search to the iTunes Store instead of your own library. Of course, if you want more specific searching according to album title, artist, or composer, use the Store menu on the iTunes menu bar and select the Search… option. HTH. Re: iTunes Question.
Hi, I also use VO-Command-Shift-T to move to the sources table when I'm in my library. But my suggestion of using Command-Option-F and then tab or Right arrow or VO-Right arrow works everywhere, even in the iTunes Store. If someone tries this and can't get to the sources list, then I know something is drastically wrong -- like they've managed to minimize their iTunes window display, and won't be able to navigate to anything else. Re: Dictation on iPhone / iPad
Hi Paul, To add to what Josh said, the dictation feature was added for the iPhone 4S, and appears on devices that were released since then, such as the third generation iPad and the recent releases of the iPhone 5, fifth generation iPod Touch, and new iPads (mini and fourth generation). It shows up in the form of a Dictate button just to the left of the space bar for languages that are supported. (For example, if I switch to a Russian input language keyboard there's no Dictate key present, and the space bar extends over that location, while it's there for French.) You use the key on the virtual keyboard to start and stop dictation instead of using a keyboard shortcut, but the kinds of dictation commands you use are similar. You have to speak punctuation, such as open quote or quote, followed by the phrase, and then close quote, similarly for parentheses, capitalizing letters, periods, and commas. And, of course, there are several possible variant phrases, such as full stop instead of period. HTH. Re: Pairing MacBook Air with IPhone 4S
Hi Paula, I think that Chris means the third-party apps Type2Phone and iKeyboard can let you use your Mac as a Bluetooth keyboard for inputting text on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. (I don't think there's an app named Mac2Phone.) And actually Type2Phone should also allow you to control/navigate your iOS device as well as copy text from Mac to iPhone, provided you turn VoiceOver off on your Mac, but I've found it a little less stable for this. And the last time I checked, iKeyboard had support for more different input language keyboards, though both will support other languages besides English. Here are the URLs at the Mac app store: Type2Phone by Houdah Software $4.99 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/type2phone/id472717129?mt=12 IKeyboard by Invictus Security $9.99 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ikeyboard/id441439411?mt=12 There are also discussions of these apps in the list archives, starting from December of last year. Here's a link to a post replying to a query about using the Mac as a Bluetooth keyboard for iOS devices, for example: Re: Using Mac as Bluetooth keyboard http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg08125.html HTH. Hi Paula, Sorry to keep coming up with additions, but you might also take a look at myPhoneDesktop, which is a combination iPhone app and desktop client that Sarah posted about some months ago. It occurred to me that when you spoke of typing my texts that you might mean text messaging, and not the functions of general text entry and Bluetooth keyboard and navigation control of your iOS device. Re: Spaces on Mountain Lion
Hi Paul, Rats! I composed a reply, got called a way, and then posted before I read your note. Well, hopefully that Apple Knowledge Base document will help someone else. As for how you created a space in the first place, the non-VoiceOver directions say you can create a new space when you hover your mouse over the top right corner of the screen in Mission Control and press tab. Maybe you accidentally navigated to the Add Desktop button in Spaces and used part of a keystroke to create a Space? Glad you got that sorted. Re: Apple mail failure
Hi Danny, I think you need to retrieve your mail preferences from your Time Machine backup to get them organized. There's a chapter in the Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion (or Lion, or Snow Leopard) guide on Back Up and Restore Your Email. It describes multiple ways to do this. There's also a description of what files get used for different purposes. (The initial tilde character indicates these are folders under your user account): ~/Library/Mail: This folder contains all your mailboxes, rules, junk mail settings and most of the other data Mail uses. ~/Library/Keychains: This folder contains all your keychains, which store your user names and passwords. ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook: This folder contains your Address Book contacts and your Previous Recipients list. ~/Library/Preferences: This folder contains your preference files, among which is the one Mail uses. I think the preference file you need from your account's Library/Preferences folder is com.apple.mail.plist (without the quotes). Usually either this file and maybe a com.apple.mail.plist.locked folder is present. (If your mail is locked you won't be able to open it, so try deleting that folder). When you created a new Mail with your fresh install, a default com.apple.mail.plist file was created with none of your old information, so you want to replace this. I would first try making sure that the Library/Preferences folder for your account is back in place. You'll need to use the Command-Shift-G Go to Folder shortcut in Finder to navigate to your libraries, since by default your top level Libraries are hidden, then type or paste in the location you want to move to. You can either first use Command-Shift-H to move to your home directory, and then type in Library slash Preferences with no leading characters, or you can type in tilde, slash, Library, slash Preferences into the Go to folder text box dialog window to move to this library under your user account from any location. (I'm typing out the characters tilde and slash so you don't have to read character by character; the same principles apply to all the other folders mentioned above -- tilde slash with no spaces between is synonymous to your user account's home directory, as though I'd typed /Users/danny/, if that's your user account name.) I think, according to the Take Control guide, that if all the above files are in place on your fresh installed Mac, that your mail should work as before. I also think that you can copy them from a recent backup or clone. (I always keep a bootable clone around for these purposes -- doesn't have to be the latest version, but just good enough to keep a working version of your setup, and I copy the files for keychain, addressbook, and preferences over from there.) There's also a way that they describe to recover from a Time Machine backup, but it's more involved. You have to navigate to each one of the items your want to restore in Mail -- say, your Inbox, for example. Then you have to start Time Machine, navigate to one of your backups, and find the items you want to restore. Mail then creates a new local mailbox in the sidebar and creates a folder of Recovered Messages within the new mailbox. You then have to go through and reorganize things so that each of the Recovered folders are in the correct place in your real mailbox. This would place duplicates of your mailbox content on your machine, so it's really better if you can just recover your previous configuration rather than relying on the backup. I would first try to restore just the additional files I mentioned, starting with the mail preferences file, and deleting any locked mail plist file that may be present now in the library. You might consider getting the Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion guide if you want more detailed information. It's really good for practical things like this kind of recovery. HTH. Hi Dónal, I notice that some reviewers comment that the download link at the mupromo site might not be the latest to use. If you purchase the app, the developer is telling people to use this link for the full product after you purchase: http://www.abbyydownloads.com/FRMACLion/ABBYY_FineReader_Express.dmg This way you don't have to visit the ABBYY web site or download an update that supports Gatekeeper in Mountain Lion, and you just need to enter the serial number. Also, I think the license terms are the same whether you purchase from the Mac App Store or through the Mac Update Promo at 50% discount -- as a private individual you can install this on two computers (e.g. a home computer and a work computer), but you can only run one version at a time. Once more, the promotion web site is: http://www.mupromo.com/deal/13388/abbyy-finereader-express This is good for about 4 and a half more hours. You do need to create a MacUpdate account, which involves a one-time negotiation of a CAPTCHA to create the account. Re: Upgrading to Lion
Hi Mark and Others, I was curious about this question, since there are some Macs that can be upgraded to Lion, but not Mountain Lion, and the USB thumb drives for Lion are no longer being sold (except at exorbitant prices on eBay). Intego, the company that sells security products for the Mac, published an article shortly after Mountain Lion's release: What to Do if Your Mac Can’t Run Mountain Lion http://www.intego.com/mac-security-blog/what-to-do-if-your-mac-cant-run-mountain-lion/ They listed the following categories: begin quote Mountain Lion Capable Macs Mountain Lion requires one of the following Macs with at least 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of available hard drive space: • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) • Xserve (Early 2009) Lion Capable Macs If your Mac isn’t new enough to run Mountain Lion, it should still be able to run Lion if you have one of the Mac models listed below, as long as it has at least 2 GB of RAM and 7 GB of free hard drive space: • iMac (Late 2006 or Early 2008) • MacBook (Late 2006 or any 2007 or 2008 model) • MacBook Air (all models) • MacBook Pro (Late 2006) • Mac mini (Mid 2007) • Mac Pro (all models) • Xserve (Late 2006 or Early 2008) end quote A check of the Apple Discussion forums showed that if you are in this situation, you can get Lion by contacting Apple directly: If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions. The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. The toll-free 800 numbers apply for the U.S. and Canada only, I think, but there should be a similar process for users outside the U.S. (And in Mark's case, the 800 numbers will work.) If you can upgrade to Mountain Lion by purchasing from the App Store at the same price of $29.99, they'd prefer you to do so, especially since maintaining current security updates are focused on the newest operating systems. Once you have updated to either Lion or Mountain Lion you can make a bootable clone or an installer on a USB thumb drive or DVD that will work for any of your Macs. I used Carbon Copy Cloner for this (paid, but with a 30-day free trial), but you can read through the archives for discussions about using Apple's Lion Recovery Disk Assistant or Lion Diskmaker (both of which will work for Lion and Mountain Lion). You can also review the MacWorld article by Don Frakes, How to make a bootable Mountain Lion install drive http://www.macworld.com/article/1167857/how_to_make_a_bootable_mountain_lion_install_drive.html An install drive is different from a bootable clone (backup). You can find out more about backup solutions by reading the guide Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac. As a mac-access list member you're eligible to purchase this at an 80% discount. Incidentally, I remember that when Lion came out Eric was searching for a solution for backing up a Bootcamp partition, but the offerings at the time were limited, and he ended up switching to VMWare Fusion. Scrivener's NaNoWriMo promotion
Hi All, Krystal recently posted a question on list about the writing app, Scrivener, and was told that this is accessible with VoiceOver. Scrivener differs from writing apps like Pages or Nisus Writer Pro by focusing on tools that help you with the process of writing rather than the formatting -- for example, by accessing outlines or storyboards while you work. Every year, in celebration of National Novel Writing Month, the developers run a NaNoWriMo promo. Because the aim of the program is to encourage people to write a novel during the month of November, the developers of this program make available a special trial version of their software that works for the period from now (mid-October) through until December 7, 2012. Their regular free trial download works for 30 days, but the NaNoWriMo trial is meant to allow people to get used to the software in advance of the start of the November National Novel Writing Month period. It will also work even if you have previously run through one of their 30-day free trial downloads. Furthermore, if you decide to purchase Scrivener during the month of November or December, you can apply a coupon code of NANOWRIMO to receive a 20% discount on the price of the software. The list price for Scrivener 2.0 for the Mac is $45 (or $38.25 for students). They also now have a Windows version that is not as fully featured as the Mac version, which costs $40 (or $35.00 for students) and a Linux beta version. (I don't know about the accessibility of these versions.) If you write a novel, and are selected as a winner of National Novel Writing Month, the developers will give you a 50% discount on the price of Scrivener. • The special NaNoWriMo trial download page at the developer's Literature and Latte web site is: http://www.literatureandlatte.com/nanowrimo.php I think I've summarized the information that was posted on the National Novel Writing Month forum page for the special offers from sponsors, but I'll supply the URL link, in case anyone is interested: • Scrivener for Mac and Windows (and Linux sort of) http://bit.ly/QYs6WC One extra piece of information on the forum web site is that there's a Linux beta, and the URL for the Literature and Latte forums supplying and discussing the Linux version: http://www.literatureandlatte.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=33 The other piece of information on the forum announcement site is that iOS app versions of Scrivener are under development for release in Spring 2013. You can read a review of Scrivener by a VoiceOver user at Austin Seraphin's blog: http://behindthecurtain.us/2011/09/07/scrivener/ There's also a Take Control book on Scrivener, as Gordon and Lynne have pointed out. This may be a good time to check out this app and find out whether it suits your working style. Also, I believe that the regular 30-day trial is set to track days of use, so if you downloaded it, started using it, and took a break for a week, the 7 days that you didn't use the app don't count against the 30-day limit of the trial. Re: Kobo books no longer available in France
Hi Anne, I tried doing a search to find if there were any similar issues, and I found a reference posted by someone in Japan at the end of July. From what I gather from the web site description, Kobo entered into a partnership with a Japanese company named Rakuten (which is meant to be an Amazon competitor for books and eBook content in Japan). After that happened, users had to create and log into Rakuten accounts to access their Kobo book contents. Here's someone's blog post on the topic: • Kobo closed iOS App in Japan (July 20, 2012) http://blog.taiyolab.com/en/kobo-closed-ios-app-in-japan/ I'll excerpt: begin quote I’ve signed up on Kobo this June, when Rakuten announced they would release Kobo touch eReader in Japan. And registered on Kobo Writing Life to publish my novel. Reading life solution was good. Today, I found I was not able to sign on Kobo with Kobo account. Rakuten forced to log-on with Rakuten ID not with Kobo account. Rakuten decided all user to use their Japanese huge user-based account Rakuten ID. And, I lose all control of my purchased ebooks and my novel publishing data. I couldn’t find account transition announce at noon, and I’ve removed with using another browser kept last login session. http://www.kobobooks.com/japan_transition I understand Rakuten want force user to use Rakuten ID for their business. Generally, world wide service uses to keep one-through account information, but Rakuten did broke this rule. Rakuten ID user base will break Amazon’s account cloud in Japan, and when Rakute goes to Brazil, France or other country, local based account will be the sledge hammer to break Amazon’s account coverage. Books are not cultural transparent item to sell, then local (sometime legacy) account will be good for sell books. And I’ve been surprised Rakuten stopped to provide Kobo iOS App in Japan. iPhone 4S awarded the most sold cell-phone handset in Japan, and iOS coverage is larger than other countries. Kobo App for iOS was one of the best EPUB reader, I was moved future e-reading by this iOS App. But Rakuten removed App from Japanese App Store today. end quote Some thoughts: 1. A search of the iTunes Store on my Mac (after changing country to France) brings up an app named Kobo by FNAC that was released on October 17, 2012. Is it possible that you need to download the new app and log in with this latest version in order to access your previously purchased books? • Kobo by FNAC https://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/kobo-by-fnac/id480683940?mt=8 The U.S. Store version (also 5.7.1) was released on October 4, 2012 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kobo/id301259483?mt=8 I believe that before the new app was issued, using the URL of the Kobo app from the U.S. Store would automatically take you to the app in iTunes for your own country's corresponding Kobo app. For example, if I change the country of my iTunes Store on my Mac to the UK, Australia, or Canada, and then bring up the URL in Safari, activating the View in iTunes link will bring up the app in the iTunes Store. (Use item chooser menu to find the text with Free or Gratuit, then navigate (VO-Left twice) to the View in iTunes link or Afficher sur iTunes and VO-Space). The other countries (UK, Australia, Canada, etc.) will open to the Kobo app in iTunes. The French store uses a different ID number for the app, and the US link won't bring up a valid app in the French iTunes store any more. 2. Did you try downloading the new app for Kobo by FNAC and logging into your account? If they did the migration correctly, they should have brought over your account. 3. It might be that there's some requirement for a tie-in to a new account with FNAC. I don't think that's likely, but it's what happened in Japan. If Archie has a separate Kobo account, does he also encounter the same problem? Let us know how this turns out. Also, Kobo seems to be very concerned with social networking. If you don't get a satisfactory response, consider creating a Twitter account just to air your problems. HTH. I think the problem is related to Kobo going into partnership with FNAC here in France, and I'm wondering if the same problem is occurring in other European countries. I'm absolutely furious about this as I've bought well over 50 books in recent years. Luckily, I downloaded most of them onto my computer, but not all of them and I still want to be able to read them on my iPhone. Cheers, Anne --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot
Trial versions of apps [was Re: DJay4 Mac]
Hi Gordon, You wrote: As I understand it, Apple will not allow trials of applications in the App Store, hence my response. If my information is faulty, please accept my humble apologies, all. I think that the precise statement is that Apple does not allow for trial versions of applications to appear in the Mac App Store, because it does not allow developers to distribute apps that will suddenly stop working unless the user pays more money at a later date in the app stores. Similarly, it does not allow for special pricing for subsets of users. The dev can choose to lower the price for everyone for a day or other extended period, and inform previous customers on his mailing lists or on his web site that he is going to do so, but he can't give different treatment to selected groups in ways that would (possibly) allow a fair distribution system to be subverted. But there's nothing to prevent a developer from offering trial versions of software at his web site, or from running separate discount promotions or bundle sales of the same app from his web site. That's one of the reasons I check the MacUpdate site listing for most apps. Even though there are occasional errors, they're usually pointed out in user comments, and links are supplied to the developer's site so you can find more current information. (Some developers' web sites aren't laid out as rationally as the MacUpdate site, so I also appreciate the standard layout that is used.) HTH. Re: DJay4 Mac
Hi Gordon, Sarah, and Others, I believe you can contact the developer of DJay4 through Twitter, using @algoriddim as the contact address. The other way to give feedback is to join the forums at their web site, and the forum leader is named Anders. This information comes up from a Mail Archive search. There's a history of the developers' responding to feedback about VoiceOver. Most of the accessibility inputs (for both the Mac app, and then later for the iOS app releases for both iPhone and iPad) started 3 years ago (in the previous version of DJay3), with the efforts of Yuma Decaux. She was active in contacting the developers for VoiceOver improvements, and tested the iOS app versions on both iPhone and iPad. I'm passing on the contact information she supplied. HTH. Re: DJay4 Mac
Hi All, I've not been following the lengthy Djay4 Mac discussion, but I note that Chris and Orin asked about a trial download, and Gordon replied that since it was distributed through the Mac App Store there was no trial download. A Google search brought up the link to an Algoriddim web page labeled Download a free 15-day trial of djay, and the page URL is: http://www.algoriddim.com/djay-mac/download There's a note that To fully activate the trial version and remove all limitations you should purchase djay from within the application or from the Mac App Store. The MacUpdate site seems to imply that a demo version costs $9.99, and points to the same versions of the djay download (4.0.6). Make of this what you may. Re: Itunes importing disks.
Hi Ian, If you want to join tracks on your CD when importing, you'll find the option under the Advanced menu on the iTunes menu bar. I'll assume you have already set up your importing settings under iTunes preferences, so that your format is MP3 instead of the AAC format that comes up as a default. (For other list members reading this post, changing the default format of imported CD tracks is done from the General tab of iTunes preferences. Bring up preferences with Command-comma, then on the General tab that comes up by default, navigate to the section for When you insert a CD and press the Import Settings… button to get a dialog window to select your options for encoding format and bit rate or quality.) Once you've inserted your CD you'll want to click on tracks listed in the songs table for the CD and use Command-A to select all. In principle you could join subsets of contiguous tracks when importing with the Join CD Tracks option, so in an audio book CD with short stories I could select and join tracks that belonged to the same story by selecting and highlighting the first track of a story by clicking with VO-Shift-Space, then pressing on the Shift key and arrowing down to the last track of the story. The Join CD Tracks option in the Advanced menu of the menu bar stays dimmed if there are no tracks selected for joining. So after you have selected your CD tracks for joining, use VO-M or Control-F2 to move to the iTunes menu bar and press a to navigate to the Advanced menu. Arrow down and press j to move to the Join CD tracks option and press return. Then proceed to import your CD as usual. HTH. I'm giving instructions from memory, since I'm using a MacBook Air with no CD drive at present. Jane can probably tell if I've made a mistake in these instructions, since she frequently imports audiobooks using the Join CD Tracks option in iTunes. Re: Amadeus Lite - Exporting to iPhone Ringtone
Chris, One of the features of Amadeus Pro or Lite is that it lets you interactively select the portion of any audio track you want to process or cut out -- whether that's to excerpt, apply noise cleaning, use audio effects, etc. If you selected a track, and didn't specify in any way that you wanted to select a section of the track, the program will convert the entire track to the ringtone format. Drop some markers to select the part of a track you want to make into a ringtone. For example, press space bar to start the track playing, then press P to place a marker at positions you select, and press space bar again to pause the playback. Use Option+Left Arrow to move to the previous marker position and Option+Right Arrow to move to the next marker. If you're happy with the placement of the markers, use the Selection menu to mark the part of the track you want select. You can move to the marker for your start position and use Mark selection (shortcut Command-Shift-M.) Then use Command-Right arrow to Extend to next marker, which can also be found in the Selection menu on the menu bar. You can check the selection by pressing space bar again, and playback will start and stop at your selected region. Apply the function to export as a ringtone to your selection. Note that you can copy, cut, and paste selections from tracks in Amadeus Pro, so you could create a new track from you selection. There have been some previous podcasts about Amadeus Pro discussed on this list by Allison, Paul Hopewell, Eric Caron, and Dane. Here's a link to a post in the archives that gives some useful links. (I used the link to the public Mail Archive that appears at the bottom of each page, typed Amadeus Pro podcast into the text box, and pressed return, then copied the first link of the results): • Re: Amadeus Pro http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg10488.html (Note that the reference to the Amadeus 101 podcast by Allison is from Sarah's earlier post, quoted below my post, and given as the podbean site. You can also use Control-P as a shortcut to read previous notes in threads at the Mail Archive, so pressing Control-P twice will take you to Sarah's post. Eric and Dane submitted podcasts to Blind Cool Tech when an earlier version of Amadeus Pro was in use, so the sources listed in the linked post may be more helpful. HTH. Re: Using my iphone 3gs as an external mike for my mac, is it possible?
Hi Orin and Others, You may have been thinking about the Dragon Remote Microphone application that allows you to use an iPhone/iPod/iPad or an Android device as a remote mic for the Dragon Naturally Speaking speech recognitions software. This feature was written into both the desktop application and the iOS (or Android) app, which is why it works, and is specific to that application. I don't think this will work for the iPhone 3GS -- only later model devices. Here's the link to the Nuance web page that describes the requirements: • Using the Dragon Remote Microphone application with Dragon NaturallySpeaking (Answer ID 6294) http://nuance.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6294/ Matthew, there's a way to connect your iOS device so that it shares the internet connection from your computer by turning your Mac into a Software base station (described in appendix C of the Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network eBook), but it requires that your Mac have an ethernet, firewire, or some other non-Wi-Fi network connection working to access the internet. Then you create a local ad hoc network using your Airport wireless device (by navigating to Airport on your status menu bar) and arrow down to select Create network… in place of selecting your local Wi-Fi network. There are some more sharing configuration details you have to set up in System Preferences to allow this, but basically you have your Mac connected to the internet through the wired ethernet connection, and you use the Airport Wi-Fi in your Mac to create a small, ad hoc wireless network that your iOS device or another computer with wi-fi in your immediate vicinity can connect to. I did this when I first got my iPod Touch, and wanted to use it in a location where I had my laptop with only ethernet connections to locate nearby points of interest via Wi-Fi. However, if you're having difficulty using your router, this doesn't sound like a solution for you. HTH. Re: Hiding message contents table in Lion?
Hi Gary, Sarah's correct: in Lion you need to do a physical mouse click after routing your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor on the horizontal splitter. VoiceOver's software equivalent of a mouse click (VO-Shift-Space) doesn't work here. Since you're using a MacBook you can press your trackpad twice quickly in succession to do the double click. I perform a hardware double-click by placing my right hand on the flat area beside the trackpad, and then using a thumb or forefinger to double click. I prefer to do the double clicks on my keyboard, so I have set up my Mac so I can toggle mouse keys on or off by pressing the Option key 5 times quickly. With this setting, which you can enable in System Preferences Universal Access under the Mouse Trackpad tab by checking the box for Press the Option key five times to turn Mouse Keys on or off, you can simply double tap the i key when focused on the horizontal splitter to double click and close the Preview pane in mail. Then press the Option key again 5 times to turn mouse keys off again, so that you'll be able to use your keyboard normally. Mouse keys is normally turned on so that you can move your cursor on the screen up, down, left, right, or diagonally, by pressing the keys above, below, to the left, to the right, or diagonally positioned around the 5 key of a numeric keypad. On laptops that position is occupied by the i key (where the embedded numeric keyboard 5 key used to be). You can also click a t the current mouse position by tapping the i key, and set up Verbosity under VoiceOver Utility so that VO announces announces what is under the mouse cursor with no delay. This helps in some accessibility situations, because you you can move your mouse cursor across the screen with a sequence of key presses (1 pixel per press) using mouse keys when this is enabled, and have VoiceOver tell you what is under your mouse cursor. Then, when you reach a control that VoiceOver can read out, even if there are no hooks to move there with regular navigation shortcuts, you can click it by pressing the 5 key (on full-sized keyboard with a numeric keypad or on an attached USB or wireless/bluetooth numpad) or the i key (on a laptop). The only caveat is that mouse keys and Numpad commander should not both be turned on at the same time, since they have conflicting definitions for the numeric keypad actions. HTH. The software double click (with VO-Shift-Space) used to work to drop the horizontal splitter and close the mail Preview pane in earlier versions of Mac OS X, but it doesn't work for Lion and later. Using the trackpad to double click or turning mouse keys on and double tapping with the i key on your Mac laptop will work for this. Audio Hijack Pro, which has been discussed extensively here, is $22 instead of $32. Fission, the lossless audio editor that Lynne mentioned recently, is $22 instead of $32, and if you want to buy the Audio Hijack Pro + Fission bundle, it's $40 instead of $50. Nicecast for broadcasting your music is $49 instead of $59, and Piezo, a very simple recording app, is $5 instead of $15. I'm writing out the prices because the announcement of prices of the column three labels on their web page doesn't accurately reflect the prices announced in their email newsletter, and all the entries read the same, incorrect price drop ($25 to $5 -- unfortunately not true.) If you activate the buttons in the fourth column of this page, the items will be placed in your shopping cart at the discounted price. For that matter, if you purchase items from the regular page today, they'll show up in your shopping cart at the discounted price in honor of the 10th anniversary. OK, one more accessibility fix announcement: On the check out page, there are two radio buttons for the payment option that are not further detailed. The first one, selected by default, is for credit card payments. The second radio button is for Paypal. This is obvious when you activate the Continue link to provide the final payment information. Despite the checkout issues, the software is very good. This offer is in effect for the next day. HTH. Accessibile HTML versions of the iPhone User's Guide for iOS 6
Hi All, HTML versions of the iPhone User's Guide for iOS 6 are available from: http://help.apple.com/iphone/6/en.lproj/ You can also find versions of this user guide in iBooks: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/iphone-user-guide-for-ios-6/id563272542 For international users, HTML versions of the iPhone User's Guide in other languages can be obtained by changing the two-letter code at the end of the URL from en for English to the code for the language you want. For example, for a version of the user guide in French, the e n gets changed to f r, so delete the last string of en.lproj/ and replace this with fr.lproj: http://help.apple.com/iphone/6/fr.lproj/ Here's the list of codes from the Apple Developer's documentation. The iPhone User's Guide is not available in all languages, but a great many are covered. Re: voice over caps lock key does not work on my bt keyboard. what to do?
Hi Sarah, I'm not sure what the problem is if your remapped caps lock works on your laptop, but not on your BT keyboard, Here are some thoughts though. First, are you using any other remapping software? KeyRemap4MacBook assumes that it is starting with a clean slate. If you've reassigned keys with other software that might be an explanation. When you followed Eric's directions, did you download the specific version of the app that he described? This is: http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/files/KeyRemap4MacBook-7.8.17.dmg The developer put in a custom setting for that version of the app so that you can search for blind voice over in the preference pane under the Change Key tab and automatically get this set up. I used the original instructions that he sent (which provided a way to make a general customized private xml), so I didn't follow this route. This means I can make the set up to remap VO keys to caps lock for any future updated version of KR4MB, but it's more complicated to perform. If the remapping works on your laptop, then check under System Preferences KeyRemap4MacBook on the Change Key tab (selected by default). As long as you haven't limited your remapping by checking boxes like Don't remap external keyboards or Don't remap Apple keyboards, what works on your laptop keyboard should work on your Apple BlueTooth keyboard. The easy way to find out what has been checked is to navigate to the show enabled only check box and check it (VO-Space). Then when you navigate to the Table (with VO-Command-T) and interact, any items that you've checked under the KR4MB prefs should show up. If you do want to limit which keyboards work with the remapped settings, make sure that the show enabled only check box is unchecked, then navigate to General (the very first entry in the table -- VO-Command-T to the table, interact, and VO-Space on General to expand it). You'll find various Don't remap check boxes that cover various conditions. The only other thing I can suggest is to try deleting the plist file if you're not getting consistent results. It's in the Library/Preferences folder of your home directory, and is named: org.pqrs.KeyRemap4MacBook.plist You would have to activate the Use Caps Lock as Voice Over Key setting again. Hope this helps. If this doesn't work, can you be more specific about what you mean when you say the panel is dying again? To block the use of Siri on a locked device disable the feature in the Passcode Lock settings. (Credit: Jessica Dolcourt/CNET) Upgrading to iOS 6? Be careful about leaving your locked iPhone unattended unless you change some settings. Otherwise an unscrupulous stranger could order Siri to send tweets and Facebook posts from your account that you didn't make -- even if your phone is locked. Apple has added the ability for Siri to interact with Twitter and Facebook from the lock screen, just like you can use Siri to send text messages and e-mails and make calls on a locked device running iOS 5. If you don't want Siri to conduct these sorts of activities while the device is locked, you have to disable Siri in the Passcode Lock settings. I'm not trying to scare anyone, but many people may not know about this. It's convenient to be able to use Siri without typing in a passcode, but if you're prone to leaving your phone where others could have a go at it without you around, you should know about this feature. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Rogue Amoeba audio apps [was Re: Audio Editors]
Hi, Just for those who are interested in the Rogue Amoeba products such as Fission (a simple but lossless editor), and other audio products such as Audio Hijack Pro (capture audio from your Mac) or AirFoil (stream audio content to different devices), their 10th anniversary is coming up at the end of September, so some time around September 30 is a good time to look for sales of the Rogue Amoeba products. Just in case anyone is trying out their products now, and thinking about buying. HTH. We also wanted to make it known that another editor which we really really like, known as WavePad from NCH Software, an Australian based company, is also in our collection because to be honest, it is our editor of choice, even over Amadeus Pro. Gordon finds Amadeus Pro a bit irritating at times. WavePad uses conventional word processor-like commands, and best of all you can hear what you are selecting in real time. Anyway, there you are. Re: AudioBooks Are Gone!
Hi Lynne, You might read back in the archives where Dónal had the same issue of disappearing audiobooks, about a week before the iOS 6 release. They came back in a later iOS 6 pre-release version. (I think he told me this off list). At the time, I suggested that he might be able to make them reappear by connecting his iPhone to the computer, and then expanding the tree view for the iPhone device in the sources table of iTunes to view the Books playlist. My guess was that if he played an audiobook on his iPhone from iTunes with the device connected, it might force the iTunes library to update and show up the entries. There was a similar fix for disappearing music in the iOS 4.2 update. You could try that. Re: Mac DVD Ripper Pro
Hello Lynne, I didn't answer this because I've used DVD Remaster 8 on a machine that is not updated to Mountain Lion, but I believe that Dónal may have tested this out before buying the Metakine Mini-Bundle last week. Yes, I mentioned that FairMount became part of Mac DVD Ripper Pro at the end of the July, and was not longer distributed with the DVD Remaster products, nor was it separately downloadable as of then. Another product that I've used to rip my DVDs is RipIt by the Little App Factory, but this does a straight rip of everything. (This was another mupromo bundle purchase from a few years ago that came with an earlier version of DVD Remaster Pro). HTH. Cheers, Esther On Sep 19, 2012, at 6:56 PM, Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith wrote: Hello everybody I wonder; has anybody managed to successfully rip content using Mac DVD Ripper Pro latest version? We bought it yesterday as we discovered that DVD Remaster Pro version 8 is a very different piece of software to other previous versions and we are getting crashes each time we try to use it. Also, Metakine has sold what used to be an open source project, FareMount to the company which produces Mac DVD Ripper Pro. FareMount is now incorporated as a beta into their software. But it doesn't, or so it would appear, rip audio tracks independently of the DVD video tracks. It's possible, of course, that we are totally missing the plot here and there may be functionality which we just haven't noticed. All O'Reilly e-Books 50% sale today-only
Hi All, All O'Reilly ebooks are on sale today for 50% off regular prices if you apply a coupon code of B2S2 (without the quotation marks) as part of their Back to School Sale special. I think this runs through till just before midnight Pacific Standard Time (a little over 8 more hours). These are typically computer books, and included labels are for O'Reilly, Microsoft Press, Site Point, and No Starch. All titles are sold without any digital rights managements (so you can read them on your desktop as well as on an iOS device or Android device.) Here's the web page: http://shop.oreilly.com/category/deals/b2s-2012-special.do You do need to create a log in account. You get permanent access to all electronic formats and all minor updates to that title through you account. On many older O'Reilly titles, they now offer DAISY versions, as well as ePub, mobi, PDF, etc. Afterwards, you can re-download the latest version of these books from your account in any of these formats. I believe you also get notifications by email if there are new formats or versions. You do need to visit the link in your receipt, or on your email, or on the completed web page purchase to download the actual ebooks once you've bought them. And if you want to browse their general eBook page at any later time, the URL is: http://shop.oreilly.com/category/ebooks.do Here are a few titles that looked interesting, with prices before discount. Re: moving files from one mac to another.
Hi Dónal, Can't you just ftp or sftp from one machine to the other if they're both on either a wireless or wired network? Do you have the USB ethernet connector for the MacBook Air? Of course, with 98 GB, that might take a while. Also, AirDrop is supposed to work as a way to share files between supported, Wi-Fi enabled Macs, without having to connect through the wireless network for Lion and above, and your MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer) and MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer) might qualify for that. Again, that might take a while to move. Do the files have to go over from your MacBook Pro? Do you have access to the cloned backup drive for your MBP on which you run CCC or SuperDuper? I make sure that my backup drives can use both USB and firewire connectors. I don't have any Thunderbolt compatible drives yet, but that's also supposed to be able to support a variant of target disk mode. In the process you will also gain a backup. I appreciate disk errors may cause a problem with copying this amount of data but you could presumably schedule it into copying say 10 10 gb chunks? Afternoon all, I should know the answer to this but can't remember it. I want to move a folder from my old MBP to a new Air. It's 98 GB in size. I was thinking of using a crossover network cable and using filesharing, and the appropriate permissions, to accomplish this. I've looked at Migration assistant, but it seems to be an all or nothing type scenario. In other words, you can move users, applications (customisable) and then all other files. I don't want all other files, just one specific part of the hierarchy. Can't use dropbox the folder in question is too big. Does anyone have a better way of doing this? Re: ZCaptcha - a new web service for dealing with Captchas and Metakine Mini-Bundle sale reminder
Hi Lovette, I haven't tried ZCaptcha myself, but I imagine that you can take a full screen capture while focused on a web site with a captcha image with Command-Option-3. So I'd probably try something like the following: 1) In Safari use Command-Control-F to enter full screen mode (or if you don't remember the shortcut, navigate to the View menu on the Safari menu bar with VO-M or Control-F3, followed by pressing V, then arrow down to find Enter full screen mode), so that the web page with the Captcha occupies the full screen 2) Press Command-Option-3 to take a screen snapshot of the full screen, and have it saved to the Desktop. (You should hear a sound like a camera shutter clicking.) 3) Press Command-Control-F again to exit full screen mode (or navigate to the View menu and find the option to Exit full screen mode) 4) Use Command-Tab to switch to Finder, then use Command-Shift-D to move to the Desktop 5) Find the image file with a name like Screen Shot 2012-09-15 at 8:00 PM. It will also be the most recently modified file, so if you are in list view in Finder with Command-2, and sort the column Date modified column, it should be at either the top or bottom of your list. The file will be named with the date and time of your screen snapshot, as in my example. 6) Once this file is selected, you use the link to http://www.azavia.com/zcaptcha/upload.html to upload it to the ZCaptcha site. Note that you should first follow all the instructions at the ZCaptcha web site about creating an account, logging in, and authorizing the associated payment before you start this process, or you won't be able to access the upload link -- which requires that you log into the account you created. I haven't actually tried this service myself yet -- I personally try to avoid dealing with any captchas unless I absolutely have to. This is only meant to work with image captchas, and not the sites with audio captchas. HTH. If someone else tries this service out, let us know how you make out by posting to the list. Thanks for that, Colin. Re: iTunes Media Folder
Hello Gordon, I wrote out instructions for how to move your iTunes library content to an external drive, with a link to the ilounge guide for how to do this. Take a read through my list post at the Mail Archives: • Moving iTunes library to an external drive [was Re: Itunes question] http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg07714.html The actual moving, as Sarah described, is done by the Organize library… menu option under the File menu on the iTunes menu bar which you find under the Library sub-menu. This is what used to be called Consolidate library. It's a two-step process: first, you bring up your iTunes preferences with Command-comma, and navigate to the Advanced pane in the toolbar and select it with VO-Space. There you change the iTunes Media folder location. to point to a folder on your external hard drive. Then you close preferences and navigate to the File menu of the iTunes menu bar, arrow down, press l to move to LIbrary, and right arrow to the Organize library… option under the Library sub-menu and press return. This action will move files from your iTunes Media folder (and any other locations outside of the iTunes Media folder where you may have added tracks to your library) to your new, designated location on the external drive. It will also update your iTunes database files (the iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml files) to use paths to the new location, but I think it will not move these files out of the iTunes Media folder on your main hard drive. (Of course, if you first manually move try to move the whole iTunes Media Folder including these files without using the Organize library… option it may recreate them.) Please read through the linked post, and the ilounge guide on this subject. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Sep 12, 2012, at 4:16 PM, Sarah Alawami wrote: I don't know if you have to move your itl file over. Metakine mini-bundle one-day sale of DVDRemaster Pro, Mac DVD Ripper Pro, and 8other apps for $39.99
Hi All, Metakine, the makers of DVDRemaster Pro, have put together a mini-bundle sale as today's MacUpdate Promo. They're selling 10 apps, including DVDRemaster Pro and Mac DVD Ripper, for a price of $39.99. The apps are: DVDRemaster Pro (which is now sold in the Mac App Store as DVD Remaster 8 for $49.99) Mac DVD Ripper Pro (normally $19.95, includes the Fairmount decryption program) Hands Off! Aurora ($14.99 in the Mac App Store for Aurora Lite) Back In Focus ($99.99 in the Mac App Store) Decompose ($29.99 in the Mac App Store) Magic Launch Video Rotate ($2.99 in the Mac App Store) Processes Photo Batch ($14.99 in the Mac App Store) I think this is worth purchasing just for the combined price of DVDRemaster Pro and Mac DVD Ripper Pro alone, if you want to accessibly rip DVDs into formats suited for Apple TV or iOS devices, just extract audio tracks, or reformat them. Of the other programs, I think Aurora is accessible (it's a wake-up program that lets you wake up to an iTunes playlist instead of an alarm), and Processes and Hands Off! might be. (Processes lets you zap stalled processes, pause apps and processes that are slowing down your system and resume them later, and also monitor processes' system usage and network connections and files. Hands Off! monitors the way your applications access your network and disks, in case they send out data.) Many of the others are video or photo processing programs, but Back in Focus might be usable or useful. (It seems like a way or automatically de-blurring photos you take). This offer is good for the next 15+ hours. Purchasing MacUpdate promos requires that you create an account, and that involves a one-time negotiation of a CAPTCHA. After that, all purchase transactions and accessing the apps should be completely accessible. You can log in to your account, and view a record of past purchases and software licenses, and re-download the apps. You can also designate that the license for a particular app in a bundle purchase be issued for someone else -- this lets you gift a friend with a license if you've already purchased an application in a software bundle. It also lets you decide to share bundles with someone else by splitting the price and dividing up the apps. The person you designate to receive the license does not need to have a MacUpdate login -- you just need to give a valid email and name for the license. (However, they also won't have a permanent record of the license code and purchase details that are associated with an account.) For new users, Gordon (who runs this list) worked with the developer of DVD Remaster Pro to ensure VoiceOver accessiblity with this app. There is a freeware alternative, Handbrake, but DVDRemaster Pro will process in about a third the time, and also has other convenient features that simplify separate audio track extraction, compression from dual-layer DVDs, etc. HTH. Hi Dónal, I have the paid membership to MacUpdate Desktop, because that was part of a promotional price option in one of their bundles. It's set to expire near the end of September. Downloading Apps for iOS [was Re: FileApp Pro downloading app]
Hi Gordon and Others, I drafted this earlier (when FileApp Pro was still free), but didn't have a chance to send this off. Yes, FileApp Pro is pretty accessible, but if you're asking for a recommendation of which app I would personally use, I'd opt for Filer: • Filer ($3.99) by Dan Leehr L.L.C. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filer/id318884764?mt=8 There's a free Lite version of Filer you can try, but you're limited to storing 7 files in the app: • Filer Lite (free) by Dan Leehr L.L.C. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filer-lite/id350939597?mt=8 Filer uses persistent storage, which means that if I'm playing an mp3 file of a podcast or a movie's described audio track that is uploaded to Filer, it will resume from where I last left off, even if I've switched apps between returning to listen. If I'm reading a document in .rtf or pdf format, there's a slider at the right side of the screen I can touch, and then swipe up or down (or double tap and hold, then drag up or down to a position) to quickly navigate. That's a feature that isn't in FileApp, and is handy to have, although FileApp and FileApp Pro will remember which page you're on in .RTF and Word document files. There's an extensive help guide for Filer that loads under Files (the third of five tabs at the bottom of the screen -- just above the home button). This explains the various options for using Filer. I've also been told, by someone whose judgement I trust, that the Downloads - Downloader Download Manager app appears to have better memory management for large files than Filer under iOS 5. Also, his statement was that there are certain download sites that Safari on iOS won't now download from, such as Sendspace, and that Filer will show the same behavior as Safari. (I don't do enough downloading from such sources to be able to tell whether this is true; in general, if there is an issue with downloading with Filer, I've been able to use the Atomic Web Browser app.) So for completeness, here are the links to the Downloads app in the regular and lite versions. As in the case of Filer, the lite version of the app is free, but limits you in the number of files that can be stored. There are separate versions of Downloads (and Downloads Lite) for the iPhone and iPad. • Downloads - Downloader Download Manger ($1.99) by Hian Zin Jong http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-downloader-download/id343307433?mt=8 • Downloads Lite - Downloader Download Manger (free) by Hian Zin Jong http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-lite-downloader/id349275540?mt=8 And for the iPad: • Downloads for iPad - Download Manager ($2.99) by Hian Zin Jong http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-for-ipad-download/id380641055?mt=8 • Downloads Lite for iPad - Download Manager (free) by Hian Zin Jong http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-lite-for-ipad-download/id383846063?mt=8 You can use these kinds of apps for many purposes, such as WiFi transfer between your iOS device and your computer, transferring file content such as eBooks to other apps on your device, handling compressed file formats, and directly reading/playing files within the app or accessing your Dropbox files. If you read word documents or .rtf files Filer and FileApp will remember the page you're on. This doesn't work for text files, though. I'd summarize by saying that FileApp Pro was worth getting as a free app that is mostly accessible, especially if you don't know whether you want or need downloading features, or resuming position when reading word or .rtf documents. However, I think that if you do decide you want these functions, and want to purchase an app for this, Filer (or possibly, Downloads) is a better choice, because I find it overall a better app, with generally better accessibility and features like the slider at the right side of the screen for positioning within documents. All of these apps have free versions (FileApp, Filer Lite, and Downloads Lite) that let you explore the interface. HTH. Re: ipad has stopped connecting to my wifi network.
Hi Dónal, This is not a permanent fix, but what happens if you change the assignment from DHCP to a static IP address? If you go to Settings Wi-Fi and then flick right to the more info button for you selected network and double tap, you can read the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS, and Search Domains under the DHCP tab. You can switch the selected tab from DHCP to Static by double tapping, and then you can enter values in all the same fields, including a valid IP address. I'm not sure what you mean about your iPad getting a self-assigned IP -- do you meant that this is not a valid IP address even though the address seems legal? (On my Airport Express the addresses are 10.etc.) Can you manually switch to the IP address of one of your other connected devices (which you take off of that address) and have your iPad connection work? The only Wi-Fi router related iOS connection problem I've had was time-outs dropping the connection on my first device (iPod Touch in early 2010), an that only happened when I was on a WPA encrypted network and near the edge of coverage. That was because the energy saving settings on the device would drop the connection if there wasn't a fast enough response from the Wi-Fi network to indicate this was currently in use. So unless there was continuous network use, the connection would periodically just drop. If I streamed a low bit-rate radio station in the background with ooTunes that was enough to keep the network connection up (under the default DHCP setting for my encrypted home network), and then later I found that if I switched the IP settings to static and copied in the address from the DHCP assignment, that would also keep the connection up without having to stream anything in the background. What was weird was that this only happened on this one network with WPA encryption and when I was farther from the router; it wouldn't happen on any open Wi-FI network, or ones that were WEP encrypted. Eventually, there was an iOS update that fixed this, and I didn't have to use the static IP address. Changing the DNS lookup address didn't help in this case, although that work for some people. I assume you're only having this connection problem with your home Wi-Fi network, and your iPad can connect elsewhere? Cheers, Esther On Sep 11, 2012, at 3:22 AM, Dónal Fitzpatrick wrote: Hi all, This is one for the networking gurus on list. I'm no expert in this so I'm baffled. Re: download managers.
Hi Dónal, My response would also be to use wget or curl from the command line, but the Sitesucker interface might be easier for your friend to use, and it's easy enough to get this as a free app from the Mac App Store. It won't work to pull down content on sites where you have to dynamically generate the downloadable content by activating a pop up menu button, of course. There's also a free app called Maria that is described as being a simple Cocoa implementation (with GUI) of wget. It was built under Snow Leopard (late 2011 release), and is also well rated in reviews at the MacUpdate site, which gives links to both the developer site and the download: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/34207/maria The only comment was that it has fewer options for specifying the file types to download -- so if you want to pull down all files of a given type, and it isn't in the specified list of most common files (like MP3, PDF, etc.), then you have to pull down the whole site. Whereas Sitesucker may have a few more specific file types listed. (I haven't tried downloading Maria, since there's a limit to how many of these other apps I want to try out without knowing more about the specifics behind the original question. It seems likely to be accessible.) HTH. Cheers, Esther On Sep 9, 2012, at 11:32 PM, Dónal Fitzpatrick wrote: Hi Esther, wget or curl are the ones I'd use for this myself. Go2Shell app and Navigating to a target directory in Terminal [was Re: Symbolic Links, Reminder]
Hi Gordon, I've previously posted to this list about the free Go2Shell app, but it was part of a thread trouble-shooting a problem that required using Terminal, and likely did not receive much attention. This is a great tool for switching to a specific folder directory in Terminal that you've previously selected in Finder, as you might want to do in the case of creating your symbolic links. I'll paste in the relevant text from my post of last November: I also found a useful free app in the Mac App Store named Go2Shell that Travis and others may like. Here's the recent TUAW description: begin quote Go2Shell is a tiny little 0.3MB app available for free from the Mac App Store that has the potential to speed up your work-flow if it involves Terminal. Go2Shell simply launches a Terminal session with the current folder you're navigating in Finder, or the folder that Go2Shell is located in, open for work. It even supports iTerm, iTerm 2 and xterm if you're not a fan of Apple's own-brand Terminal. It's so simple, it's almost beautiful and if you happen to have to modify files in Terminal, or any other similar task, Go2Shell could be just ticket to save you time. snip Go2Shell is a great free download from the Mac App Store that does one thing and one thing well. So if you're a Terminal guru (even the app's preferences are accessed through the command line) then give Go2Shell a whirl. You might like it. end quote Here's the link to the Go2Shell program at the Mac App Store: http://itunes.apple.com/app/go2shell/id445770608?mt=12 HTH. Re: IOS backup strategies.
Hi Dónal , First, on the issue of not being able to see your Audiobooks under your iPhone music library entries, I believe you can fix this if you connect your device to your computer and use iTunes. At a guess, if you have your iTunes preferences set with the box checked for Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing on the Devices tab of your preferences (brought up with Command-comma), you can find your device in the sources table, expand it to show the various libraries, and then navigate to the Books entry under the expanded source tree under your iPhone. This is the source tree of your iTunes content on your device -- similar to the iTunes library on your computer, but with specific entries for your iOS device. Select the Books playlist (click on it with VO-Shift-Space after routing your mouse cursor to your VO cursor with VO-Command-F5), then navigate to the table of books with VO-Command-T. You should be able to view your audiobooks in that table, along with your eBooks. Start playing any one of these (e.g., navigate to an audiobook track in the books table for your iPhone, and press return). Stop playing and eject your device. Check whether you are now able to view your audiobooks. I'm not sure how this works with the cloud backups, but I believe this does work for local iTunes backups of your device on your computer. James Austin will recall that when the iPhone update to iOS 4.2 came out, there was a weird bug so that your music didn't appear to be on your device. This was not due to a corrupted backup that actually lost your audio files, but due to a failure of the iTunes database stored on your device to properly update with the sync. Viewing the device library contents while your iPhone is connected to iTunes on your computer is a way to check that the tracks are really there, and starting to play any one of the missing tracks forces the iTunes library database file on the device to update. (There are some posts in the old archives from end of November 2010 that contain this information, but this would be difficult to search, since it's from the time when all list posts from the whole year were stored in a single mailbox.) As for extracting information from iOS backups, you can look for a command-line tool written by Erica Sadun called mdhelper. She described using this in a series of posts about iPhone backups back in 2008 in the O'Reilly blogs (1st four mentioned in the first URL): http://blogs.oreilly.com/digitalmedia/erica-sadun/ http://blogs.oreilly.com/iphone/2008/07/iphone-backups-part-5-even-mor.html Get the mdhelper tool (revised since the original posts) at: http://ericasadun.com/ftp/Macintosh/ I have a list of links to all the original articles stored somewhere, but I think the above links (from a web search), pretty much cover the posts she wrote (5 in number). There's also a set of links to Erica's posts from the iPhone wiki that should cover the same material: http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Understanding_iPhone_Backup_Files If you do a Google search, you can find posts she has written about recovering photos, contacts, etc. with mdhelper. This is Mac-only. (I looked this up because I wanted to know how to extract ebooks from Stanza, before Apple made it possible to view files within apps.) HTH. Re: Instapaper help please
Hi Paula, Create an Instapaper bookmarklet for Safari, and then when you're on a web page you want to save for later reading in Instapaper, just apply the bookmarklet. The instructions on the developer's web site are clearly explained, and the process is entirely accessible, but if you want to read a set of step-by-step, VoiceOver specific instructions on how to make an Instapaper booklet, you can read my archived post for Ian from the end of last year. Here's the link: Re: Instapaper and Safari http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg05153.html The quick summary is that you use the contextual menu to copy the bookmarklet java script code from the Instapaper page, then create a bookmark with the Safari Coomand-D shortcut, and paste the java script contents into the URL address field of the bookmark. If you make this one of the first 9 bookmarks in your Bookmarks bar, pressing Command-1 (for the first bookmark in your Bookmarks Bar) will apply the bookmarklet and save the page. If it's the second bookmark on your Bookmarks Bar, use Coomand-2, and so forth, as long as that bookmarklet is one of the first 9 in this list. If you want to apply this on your iOS device, find this bookmarklet, which will be synced over, in your Safari bookmarks menu. There are several RSS newsfeed apps and third party browser apps for iOS devices that will have their own built-in Instapaper integration. HTH. Re: decription tool for dvds
Hi Gordon and Others, At the end of July/beginning of August Fairmount became separately acquired/distributed by Mac DVD Ripper Pro. So Annie is correct that getting Mac DVD Ripper Pro will handle the decryption. If you downloaded Fairmount from Metakine's web site for use with earlier versions with DVD Remaster Pro, you can probably continue to use it. I don't think that the terms of the Mac App Store allowed for distribution of Fairmount along with DVD Remaster Pro, so It was always a separate (albeit free) download item from Metakine's web site for users who bought the DVD Remaster in the standard or Pro version. I believe the Pro version is the only one that is sold through the Mac App Store. Another option for a straight rip with decryption is Ripit! from the Little App Factory. But I believe that recent purchases of DVD Remaster Pro do not include Fairmount. HTH. Re: Can I rename an iPhone App?
Hello Paul, Sarah, and Others, The ability to add labels for VoiceOver was a feature that was added to iOS 5. You can check the AxS Lab link summarizing current iOS VoiceOver Gesture, Braille, and Keyboard Shortcuts for the equivalent commands to add labels using a keyboard and Braille: http://axslab.com/ios-shortcuts (I don't think I've relabeled anything except by using the two finger double tap and hold gesture, but the equivalent commands for keyboard and Braille exist.) I think that some labels just don't stick when the same buttons come up in multiple contexts (think this happened in AroundMe, for example). It's as though the reference to control loads up with the default label when used, and as long as it's always used in the same context, your new label continues to work, but if it's brought up again as part of a general screen refresh, then the new defaults get loaded. In general, you can label or relabel anything, so you can replace button icon labels like gear with something more meaningful like settings, and strip out extraneous announcements like number prefixes and repeat buttons. Again, while this is a nice feature, it's still worthwhile to get the developer to fix the labels, because this is only a temporary and individual customization. HTH. Re: Jumping to top of mailbox
Hi Travis, Up through Snow Leopard you could hold down the Option key with either the Up or Down arrow and just wait a little to move to the top or bottom of the messages table in Mail. This applied only to Mail, and was a system feature that did not depend on VoiceOver. Unfortunately, this system feature went away in Lion and above. Re: Can I rename an iPhone App?
Hi Paul, Sarah's correct -- you can't change the name of the app's file, but you can change the VoiceOver label associated with the icon on the screen. But it will only apply locally to your device, and will only last until you next sync or update your device with a newer version of the application. Locate the icon for the app you wish to rename, then once focus is on that icon do the two finger double tap and hold gesture and wait for the tri-tone. In the text field of the Label Element window, delete the old label for the app name and type in a new one. Then flick to the Save button and double tap. Again, this only means that VoiceOver's announcement will be different for this app. If you do a Spotlight search you'll still have two apps with the same name. It's just that if you flick to one or the other of the apps you'll hear a different label announced by VoiceOver. Cheers, Esther On Aug 21, 2012, at 08:49, Sarah Alawami wrote: I don't think you can. I also take the precaution of periodically going to my Library/Preferences folder in list view, and copying the 50 or so most recently modified plist files to a folder in another location, such as my Desktop. That way I can quickly recover to older, working preferences if I do manage to change things by just copying an older version of the plist to this folder. Since these files are very small, this is a fast way to revert to older settings, and its not worth using TimeMachine to recover. HTH. NumPad on laptop Macs and KeyRemap4Macbook
Hi All, Gordon asked me to draft up a version of my post on KeyRemap4Macbook, so I'm posting a first draft. Basically, this is keyboard remapping software that automatically lets you use an embedded numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard by adding a press of the Fn key. This also, incidentally, gives you access to NumPad Commander custom key definitions in VoiceOver if you enable NumPad Commander. Additionally, you can use this software for regular keyboard remapping both on your current keyboard, other external keyboard, and in a virtual machine. I'm limited as to what I can test -- I don't run Windows or VMWare Fusion, so I haven't tried to remap PC keyboards. Also, I'm not running Mountain Lion yet, so although I know this will install under ML, I believe you're prompted to bring up the context menu to run the GateKeeper authorization. I can't give explicit directions for this. Please give feedback on the contents (which are rather long). So far I haven't heard whether anyone else has tried this. I'll post the draft below my signature. Cheers, Esther Getting NumPad and VoiceOver NumPad Commander functions on Mac Laptops When Apple introduced NumPad Commander customizable keyboard shortcuts for VoiceOver in Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5, October 2007) it followed up by almost immediately removing embedded numeric keypads on its laptops, effectively limiting full use of these shortcuts to the extended keyboards of desktop Macs. Here we outline how you can recover these capabilities by installing the KeyRemap4MacBook application. This also lets desktop map users access NumPad and NumPad Commander functions when they are using the Apple Wireless Keyboard, since the application works for all Macs, and not just the MacBook. KeyRemap4MacBook (hereafter, KR4MB) is a keyboard remapper for the Mac that can be freely downloaded from: http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/ This program, developed by Takayama Fumihiko, who maintains a Google Groups mailing list for questions and support issues, is donationware (free to download, but with the suggestion that you make a donation if you find it useful). When the downloaded .dmg file is opened, and the installer is run, a KeyRemap4MacBook preference pane is added to your System Preferences. By default, when KR4MB is installed on your Mac, you can access the NumPad using keys on the right side of your keyboard pressed in combination with the Fn key. Furthermore, if you have NumPad Commander enabled, you will be able to execute the full range of NumPad Commander custom definitions, including combinations with modifier keys such as Control, Command, Shift, etc. The activated NumPad keys are identical to those of the embedded numeric keypads in the old PowerPC laptops and the Intel MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops manufactured before November 2007 and February 2008, respectively. The number keys lie below the 7 8 9 keys in the top row of the keyboard, and form a 3 by 3 block centered on the i key, which is number 5. The 0 key is on the bottom row, on the m key (i.e., just below the flagged j key which is 1). The layout of the full set of corresponding embedded NumPad keys, which include numerical operators and the clear key, is presented below. There are 18 embedded NumPad keys in four rows, with four keys in each of the three bottom rows consisting of 3 number keys or separators (comma or decimal point), followed by operator keys, similar to the regular numeric keypad. However, in order to make up the complement of 18 keys, the top row of number keys contains 6 keys -- an extra key to the right and left of the basic group of four comprised of the clear key (to the left) and the equals key (to the right). You can check this for yourself at any time by turning on VoiceOver keyboard help (VO-K), and pressing the the keys in question together with the Fn key. So the keys you press, together with the Fn key, produce (row by row, regular keys followed by their NumPad equivalents): 6 7 8 9 0 -clear 7 8 9 / = u i o p4 5 6 * j k l ;1 2 3 - m , . /0 , . + As an example of usage of the regular NumPad, you can enter numbers in the Calculator app by holding down the Fn key and pressing the embedded NumPad keys for data and operations. The clear key (Fn+6) can be used in this application to clear the current entry. NumPad Commander usage If you have enabled NumPad Commander in VoiceOver Utility, any of the default or customized definitions specified for numeric keypad shortcuts can be used. Unlike the situation when you connect a separate external USB or Bluetooth NumPad, all the modifier key combinations will be correctly recognized. For the NumPad Zero modifier key, you press Fn+m in addition to the other keys for the embedded NumPad. Note that while you can turn on NumPad Commander with VO-Clear using Control+Option+Fn+6, once you

Re: Installer freeze question.
Hi Danny, Are these GarageBand Jam Packs that you're trying to install under Lion? If so, the problem might be that the installers for these were written for the early PowerPC Macs, and won't run correctly in Lion or Mountain Lion. You can try using the Activity Monitor to kill the application. From Finder, use Command-Shift-U to move to the Utilities folder, then press a to move to the Activity Monitor and open it with Command-O or Command-Down Arrow. I'm not quite sure how a hung installer process would appear here, but you can navigate to the table, interact, and examine the processes to check whether a process with a name related to your installer is taking up resources. Once you highlight a process in the table, you can stop interacting and use the Quit Process button I the tool bar. If you have to force a shut-down with the power button, when you bring your system back up, use Disk Utility to repair permissions. From Finder Command-Shift-U to go to the Utilities folder, press d i s to move to Disk Utility and open it with Command-Down Arrow. Navgate to the sidebar, interact, and select the name of the disk you need to repair (e.g., MacIntosh HD). Then stop interacting and navigate to the Repair Disk Permissions button on the First Aid tab and press it (VO-Space). Wait for the repair process to finish; it should take a few minutes, depending of the size of your disk. Then you can quit Disk Utility with Command-Q. I found some information on GarageBand Jam Pack installations in a web search. I'll give the URL of the web site, but I'll also paste in the text, since this site is hard to navigate. (Remind me to post again about the Readability bookmarklet, since Safari Reader won't help here). I assume you can perform the same actions on the image file as they describe for the installation from DVD. Source: http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/InstallJamPack10.7.html begin quote GarageBand FAQ: Install Jam Packs 10.7 Q. How Do I install a Jam Pack under Mac OS X 10.7.x? [Related Entries : Region Types, Install AUs, Installer Disabled, Install New Keep Old GB, Install SoundFonts] A. Unfortunately, as you have found, the installers included with the Jam Packs no longer run under Mac OS X 10.7.x because they use legacy PowerPC code, so you need to do a little manual work to install them under this version of the OS. Once you've inserted the DVD... open it up, if it's not already opened, and control-click on the installer. In the popUp menu that appears, choose Show Package Contents. In the window that appears open the Contents folder. Within the Contents folder open the Installers folder. Here you will find some .pkg files named for the Jam Pack for which it is included. First run the file called XXX_Instruments_Tiger.pkg (where XXX is the name of the Jam Pack). Some errors will be reported, but you can safely ignore them and continue. Once the instruments are installed you install the loops using the same procedure, launching the XXX_Loops_Tiger.pkg (where once again XXX is the name of the Jam Pack) Was this information helpful? Yes / No GarageBand from Apple Computer uses audio loops and MIDI loops in Apple Loops format. It can work with Audio Units plug-ins. Apple Macintosh Compatible FireWire and USB interfaces can be used to connect Audio and MIDI instruments to your Mac, and be recorded into GarageBand. end quote HTH. Fleksy and Elements iOS apps on sale
Hi All, This post got stuck in limbo when mail services went down yesterday, so it's old news, but is still in effect. Fleksy, the predictive typing app that was previously discussed on list, is currently on sale for $4.99 (down from the normal price of $14.99) The current version is free for trial, and you have to upgrade to the full features (so you can send what you type to mail, messages, etc.) through an in-app purchase (now $4.99 instead of $14.99 for an unknown time). • Fleksy - Happy Typing (free, but in-app purchase is currently $4.99 instead of $14.99) by Syntellia http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fleksy-happy-typing/id520337246?mt=8 Elements is a text editor application with Dropbox, Markdown, and Textexpander support. It normally costs $4.99, but in celebration of its second birthday (August 17), it is being sold for $1.99 for two days. Re: power nap was: Re: Software update on Mountain Lion
Hi Paul, Josh, Will, Sarah, and Other, Power nap also requires a firmware upgrade to work for the supported models. This is a hardware limitation, because you can't run power nap without excessive heat generation except on the newest processors, which are built with on-board flash memory modules that connect directly to the logic board. This means that even if you replace your hard drives with solid state drives, you don't achieve the power consumption savings you need to safely run this. And the newer Intel processors also use less power. For more details, read the recent Macworld article by Dan Frakes, Up close with Mountain Lion: Power Nap, and navigate to the header Why isn't my Mac supported? http://www.macworld.com/article/1167970/up_close_with_mountain_lion_power_nap.html By the way, members who are new to the Mac should use the Safari Reader feature (Toggled on and off with Command-Shift-R) to read this page. This provides an uncluttered version of the article content that saves you having to navigate through extraneous links, ads, and graphics that appear on the same web page as an article. HTH. Re: podcast downloading from BlindCoolTech.
Hello Arthur and Jim, Unless things have changed, the key to being able to download podcasts from the Blind Cool Tech web site is to make sure that after you have found the link to the podcast you want, you first interact (VO-Shift-Down Arrow, or two finger flick right if you're using TrackPad Commander). Then use either VO-Shift-M to bring up the contextual menu or press Option-Return to force downloading. This quirk of having to do an extra level of interaction with the link before you can get the normal response to the context menu or the shortcut for forcing download of the linked file is peculiar to the HTML coding of the Blind Cool Tech web site. The other way you get the file to download if it starts playing in your Safari browser is to press Command-L to highlight the address in the address bar and then press Option-Return. That should have the same effect as accessing the link you would normally get after interacting. (I haven't tried this under Safari 6, but this is a Mac OS X feature, and not dependent on VoiceOver). If neither of the methods I've outlined works for you, you can always route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor (VO-Commanf-F5), and use Control-Click, where you press the Control key at the same time as you click with your mouse or trackpad. This is the Mac equivalent of a right mouse click to bring up the contextual menu. This quirk of the Blind Cool Tech web page links has been around for years. I personally avoid using the web page, go to their podcast feed instead: http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml But that has only the last 40 episodes, I think. However, there's no need for the extra interactions at the podcast feed site. Just so you know the main Blind Cool Tech web site generates a lot of errors when web validators are run on it. HTH. Re: podcast downloading from BlindCoolTech.
Hi Arthur and Jim, I want to amend a statement I made in my previous post about being able to route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor and using Contol-click to bring up the context menu if my previous instructions with the key advice of first interacting on the link don't work for you. If those instructions don't work, then routing your mouse cursor won't take you to the correct location to Control-click. I just did some testing with VO-F5-F5 to check where the mouse cursor is located in pixels on the screen before and after interacting with the podcast link. If you don't interact with the link before you route your mouse cursor to your VO cursor, you're centered on the position the link would have if it occupied the full width of the web page -- not the actual x center of the link. That's why nothing works if you don't first interact; the HTML coding on the BCT web page is sending your screen reader to the wrong location. I can go through every podcast link on the BCT web page, rou te my mouse cursor to my VO cursor, and check the mouse cursor position with VO-F5-F5, and they'll all have the same x positions in the middle of the browser screen. I'll add that this is nowhere near the x pixel values for the actual link, that you get if you first interact with the link before trying to bring up a context menu, force download with Option-Return, or check the position of the mouse cursor after routing mouse cursor to VoiceOver cursor. Just wanted to provide information that this really is bad coding on BCT home page as the source of your problems. Just keep doing extra interacting before you try the regular commands. HTH. KeyRemap4MacBook and NumPad discoveries for laptops running VO
keyboards, and the NumPad definitions seem to work OK. I've been doing my test on a 13 MacBook Pro (2010 model) running Snow Leopard. But I don't know, for example, whether the remapped keys have any contention issues with key definitions for people running VMWare and Windows or Bootcamp. Also, I haven't tried the key emulation in Bluetooth applications like Type2Phone yet, but I think that app might use the native keystrokes, only. My machine also runs TextExpander, which shouldn't affect the key remapping, but it could generate odd input combinations. Anyone who wants to try experimenting with this should probably not be using other key remapping software in contention. I think this is definitely an interesting set of features to test out, but there should probably be additional checking of the NumPad Commander function usage. In other respects KR4MB appears to be well-designed software. Here's the developer's web page for those of you who are interested: http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/ Note that there are two different versions of the software (version 7.8.0 for Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard, and version 5.1.0 for Leopard and Tiger). This downloads as a .dmg file. I just double clicked after opening the .dmg file to install on Snow Leopard, but there are specific instructions about using the contextual to open in compliance with GateKeeper under Mountain Lion. Upcoming GPS apps [was Re: Navigon Offline Navigation App Available for $20 off on iOS, TwoWeeks Only [Dealhacker]]
Hi All, Yes, Navigon is one of the GPS apps that can be used on an iPod Touch with an external Bluetooth GPS receiver such as the XGPS150A from Dual Electronics or the Bad Elf GPS. Glenn's summary is correct, and you can check the recent list archives for my post in response to Lovette's question by detailing which external Bluetooth GPS units have been successfully used by blind or visually impaired users this way. I thought I'd alert list members to a couple of recent posts on the AppleVis site about upcoming GPS apps. Michael May gave a presentation at the NFB 2012 convention in Dallas outlining an app called The Seeing Eye that the Sendero group is currently beta testing, and hopes to release later this summer. It's supposed to combine the turn-by-turn direction capabilities of current main stream GPS apps (such as Navigon and TomTom) with additional verbalization features of the Sendero apps. They state that it will be priced competitively, but I don't know what that will translate into for actual pricing. Secondly, the people who developed the LookTel MoneyReader and LookTel Recognizer apps have another GPS app in beta testing called LookTel Breadcrumbs. For those of you who are familiar with the MyWay Lite or MyWay apps, it sounds as though Breadcrumbs works in a similar fashion to allow you to drop breadcrumbs for specific points of interest, but has more features and better integration between breadcrumb-based travel and route-based travel. GPS apps like MyWay Lite and Breadcrumbs are meant to let you navigate in areas where there are no street maps, such as when you are on a hiking trail, in a large park, or walking on an extensive college campus. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Re: Mac Switcher needs checkbook/financial software recommendation
Hi Gordon, Phil, and Others, The URL for Tables is: http://www.x-tables.eu/ This is the application VoiceOver users adopted for spreadsheet use before Numbers in the iWork suite of applications was made accessible, and there was user feedback to the developer about VO performance. Many do find this more intuitive to use in the way that cell positions are referenced. But the issue is not that Numbers is less accessible than Tables and can't be used so much as that you won't find the Numbers referencing scheme familiar to you if you're coming from Excel. Tables is fine if you don't use power user functions with pivot tables, etc. But I bet it hasn't been tested yet or updated for Mountain Lion. Just a reminder that this is something that may factor into your current choices. Phil and others, I also meant to add there is an online copy of the Help for Checkbook Pro that you can access and read at the developer's web page: http://www.splasm.com/support/CheckBook%20Pro%20Help/index.html This is probably more useful for people who want to learn more about the app without downloading the trial version. Re: touch typing on iPad 3
Hi Diane, You need to be in a text field -- somewhere you would be typing -- in order to access the typing mode with the rotor. The easiest way is to start from the home screen on the iPad and click the home button once so you are in the Spotlight search field. Then use the rotor as Tommy suggested until you hear typing mode and swipe up or down to select touch typing. After you make your selection use the rotor again to set it to some field where swiping up or down won't change anything essential (such as your language or typing mode). Characters is a good choice, or Containers. HTH. Cheers, Esther Tommy Craig wrote: Use the rotor. When you get to typing swipe up or down. Re: Software suggestions please.
Hi, I'll just add to Gordon's comment that DVDRemaster 8 is currently on sale at the Mac App Store for $9.99 (vs. $49.99) for a limited time in celebration of their release of version 8. You can download a working trial version if you want try it out first by going to Metakine's web site at the URL Gordon gave. And I believe the reviews stated that DVDRemaster Pro worked in about a third the time of Handbrake. However, Handbrake is reliable and is free. Another program that people have used as a general video format converter (but not addressing the issue of reformatting to sizes for play on iOS devices or Apple TV) is MPEG Streamclip (freeware with both Mac and Windows versions) from Squared 5: http://www.squared5.com/ And for tagging you might try ID3 Editor from Pa-Software which has a free trial version (30 days or 20 launches) and supports group mode tagging. (This is another company that has both Mac and Windows versions. You have to specify which version you want licensed. Priced at $15.00 or £10.00.): http://www.pa-software.com/id3editor/ Here's the URL for DVDRemaster 8 at the Mac App Store, since I think the sale price only applies there for a limited time: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dvdremaster-8/id527609547?mt=12 You may get better recommendations from someone who does a lot of video playing, editing, and music tagging, since I usually only check out this kind of software in response to questions. Re: Burning ML to SD card.
Hi Geoff, Just to further comment on Gordon's points about the Partition tab in Disk Utility. I think that to prepare your SD card (or a USB memory stick) for being a bootable volume, the preferred method is to use the Partition tab and create a new partition, which also deletes existing content in the process, rather than to use the Erase tab. Most USB thumb drives and SD media card come formatted for use with FAT32 files for Windows, since Macs can read these formats. The distinction is that when you make a bootable drive for current Macs, you not only need to specify the format for files (e.g., Mac OS Extended, Journaled), but that you're using a GUID Partition table (for an Intel Mac) vs. an Apple Partition map (for an older PowerPC Mac, or for a device that is not being used as a startup device) vs. a Master Boot Record for devices used to start up DOS or Windows devices, or devices that require DOS- or Windows-compatible partitions. In order to get access to those options, you have to create a new partition by changing the popup button for the partition layout of your device from Current to 1 partition (or however many you want). Then you can assign name, format, and size to your partition and press the Options button to select one of the three options I described above (GUID, Apple, or MBR). These changes take effect when you click Apply. I believe that Carbon Copy Cloner lets you choose a menu item to Create a Mountain Lion Installer, which takes care of all the selection options automatically, since it assumes you need this as a bootable drive, just as the default options to use it to make a bootable clone handles this preparation and the formatting settings. But it is possible to prep the drive manually as I described by using the Partition tab of Disk Utility instead of the Erase tab. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Aug 3, 2012, at 6:32 AM, Gordon Smith wrote: Hi Geoff If you look around the dick utility tabs, you'll see a Partition tab. There is an Options button just before the two cancel and OK buttons. Pressing that will bring up a table of different partition types. In that table just select the Guide partition type radio button and click OK. Then, click Apply and then click Partition. Your partition will then be created. Perhaps related, but I see no option to specify guide as a partition type in the delete dialog of Disk Utility. After more experimentation I decided that as Esther suggested, the Lion Disk Utility's restore dialog is inaccessible for my purposes in that one can not copy or drag the desired media to the target field. I tried opening the InstallESD.dmg file and selecting the resulting mounted volume, to no avail. I created the desired installation media via CCC, and it appears to boot properly, so ML should be installed later today. It sounds as though the recovery tool that Gordon posted would have done the trick as well. Thanks to all for your suggestions and best regards. Re: Tables in PDF documents
Hello Paul, You might try one of Wondershare's products -- either PDF Converter for Mac or PDF Converter Pro -- in trial mode. This is a kind of hokey answer, and I wouldn't want to purchase the product ($59.99 or $79.99 for Pro) unless they made some accessibility fixes to their interface. The conversion seems robust. What worked for me was using their trial downloads, which are limited to converting 5 pages, to convert from PDF to Rich Text Format. By default the conversion seems to go to Word (.docx) format, and those seemed to come out as gibberish for me. HTML worked, and then I tried the conversion to .rtf, which is probably what you will want to use. Get one of the trial downloads of either PDF Converter for Mac or PDF Converter Pro from: http://www.wondershare.com/pdf-converter/mac/ If you use the web rotor set to links, and look for Free trial, you'll get two sets of matches to the free trial downloads for the standard and pro versions: the first set are the standard and pro version links at the bottom of a feature comparison table, and the second set are the summary descriptions for the products with pricing, trial and buy links at the bottom of the page, again for the standard and pro versions. (The pro version adds OCR capability). The program starts up with a Wondershare PDF Converter (Unregistered) window with a scroll area that will populate with your selected files. To run the program use the File menu on the menu bar to Add files with the Command-L shortcut. Your selections get loaded into the scroll area of the Wondershare PDF Converter (Unregistered) window, and there's an unlabeled button outside the scroll area that runs the conversion. However, you can use the shortcuts from the Convert menu of Command-R to run or Command-Shift-R to cancel instead doing a VO-Space on that unlabeled button to run the program. For each file there is an initial button that can be pressed to Preview the PDF, and then for the currently selected file there's a second button you can press to specify the conversion format and page range. However, you can bypass this by pressing Command-F to use the File Configuration shortcut from the File Menu to bring up the dialog box with the same information. This lets you specify page range (defaults to all, but you can customize by typing, for example 1,3,5-8 into the text box), and the format in the pop up menu (e.g. Rich Text Format). The check box for Apply to all lets you apply the format selection to all files you have loaded into the scroll area to date. Run the program with Command-R. Files with similar name but .rtf extension will be placed in the same directory as your selected file. If you choose HTML, then the converted file is always named index.html. This seems to work. There are paid versions in the Mac App Store, but if you only need to read your bills, you can just use the trial version, which limits you to 5 pages per document. I'll give you the App Store links: • PDF Converter http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdf-converter/id414200948?mt=12 • PDF Converter Pro http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdf-converter-pro/id422540826?mt=12 Sarah and others, the issue that Paul has hit is that the PDF versions of tables reads out of order: all the entries from column 1 then all the entries from column 2. Try printing a PDF version of a table you can read correctly on the web. When you use Preview or Skim the columns are read out of order. Using the New TextEdit Window from Selection service doesn't help: if you start from the HTML version, the TextEdit window will read the table in correct order, but if you start from the PDF version, the conversion in the TextEdit window will read the same way. I tried a few other converters that gave the same behavior. That's also why I tried converting to HTML, as well with this program. HTH. Re: Using an iPad 2 - really new to this
Hello Mary, Welcome to the list. Is this your first experience with a touch screen device? You might find it easier to read the iPad User's Guide on the web browser of your computer, first. You can find a copy at: http://help.apple.com/ipad/5/voiceover/en/ You can review the sections under Accessibility, and particularly under VoiceOver. I'll give you the direct link to the section on VoiceOver gestures: http://help.apple.com/ipad/5/voiceover/en/iPad74ec1238.html One of the gestures that I found very useful when I got started with iOS devices is the two finger flick up to read all or the two finger flick down to read all starting from the present position. Then you can do a two finger tap on the screen to pause the reading and another two finger tap to resume it. If you go past the control that you want, you can simply pause the reading with a two finger tap and then flick left to move back a step or flick right to move forward. When focus is on a control, simply double tap any where on the screen to activate it. You can also move focus to any control by simply touching it on the screen. So on the iPad, in applications like Settings or Mail, where there are general categories on the left side of the screen, and specific items on the right side of the screen, if you have difficulty navigating between the two sets of controls, simply touch the screen on that side. This will save you from having to either listen to all the Sett ings or Mailboxes on the left side before getting to the right side items if you haven't mastered rotor gestures to move by containers. Are you holding your iPad in landscape mode (home button to the left or right) or portrait mode (home button at the bottom center)? (VoiceOver will announce which you are using if you change modes.) The other recommendation is to review your VoiceOver gestures using the VoiceOver Practice Gestures section of the Settings screen. 1. From the main home screen, locate Settings and activate it with a double tap. (You can do a two finger flick up to read the whole screen, then pause the reading with a two finger tap. If you've gone past Settings, flick left until you get back to it and double tap to open.) 2. Under Settings do a two finger flick up and stop the reading at General with a two finger tap, Then double tap to select it 3. Use a four finger tap anywhere on the bottom half of the screen to go to the last element on the screen. Keep your finger separated when you tap VoiceOver should say Reset button. If you flick left from this point you'll hear Accessibility button. If you don't get results from that gesture, then just touch near the bottom of the right half of the screen and do a two finger flick down, stopping with a two finger tap when you hear Accessibility. Then double tap. 4. VoiceOver should say Settings, Vision heading. Flick right once to the VoiceOver on button and double tap. 5. VoiceOver should say Settings VoiceOver on. Flick right through the information VoiceOver speaks items on the screen. To select an item Touch it. To activate the selected item Double-tap. To scroll Flick three fingers. to VoiceOver Practice button and double tap. 6. VoiceOver should say VoiceOver Practice heading. Flick right twice to navigate past the Done button in the top right corner to the Practice VoiceOver gestures area. 7. In this area you can perform gestures and have VoiceOver identify the gesture you made and tell you what it does. For example a tap on the screen will prompt VoiceOver to say Touch, select item under your finger. A two finger flick will elicit Two finger flick up, read page starting at the top. 8. When you are finished practicing, double tap the Done button in the top right corner of the screen. You can reach this button by moving your finger vertically up the page until you reach the VoiceOver Practice heading at the top, then flick right to the Done button and double tap. 9. To return to the home screen, click the Home button (at the bottom center when you hold the iPad in Portrait mode). HTH. As a general comment, most people use too much energy when they first start swiping and tapping on the touch screen. The touch is a very light flick, as though you were trying to brush off a gnat that landed on your arm. Use enough pressure so your finger doesn't shake, but not so much that you feel fatigued after a short session. If you have problems swiping in a straight line horizontally, you can rotate your iPad 90 degrees and try the gesture as a vertical swipe, where it's probably easier to get this straight. But using the practice gestures area helps a lot, because VoiceOver will tell you the gesture it thinks you made without executing anything. Good luck. Re: ivox 3 licensing
Hello Will, You'll have to follow the upgrade procedures on the InfoVox FAQ page at: https://support.assistiveware.com/index.php?pg=kb.bookid=2 This was recently discussed on list when Paul Hopewell ran into a similar problem in upgrading. Gordon's suggestion of using the Voice Manager to reactivate the voices works if you have the new account set up, I think. But in going from the old system of packages by language to the new system of credits per voice you have to both create the new account and do something to let the setup read your old license files. That means, I think, that even though the new licenses work on more than one machine, you have to upgrade to the iVox 3 voices on a machine that has your old iVox 2 license files -- you can't do this as a clean install. Paul mentioned that the instructions weren't quite correct for his case, but that he managed to get this sorted, so you might have to ask him for details. Incidentally, to find this kind of information in the archives, please either use the Mail Archive link at the bottom of each post or a bookmark to that page, or grab the mac-access.url file that I uploaded to the new facility for small scripts and useful files that Lynne posted about earlier at: https://files.mac-access.net?login=mac-access:mac-access If you put that web shortcut file on your desktop or in your dock, opening the file will open the Mail Archive page for this group in your default browser, and you can search for content by typing your search terms into the text box like doing a Google search specifically on this list, but with more powerful and easier to use options. For example, I got the FAQ link from my earlier post by typing InfoVox FAQ into the search text box and pressing return, and then opening the first linked result. You can read down the thread by pressing Control+n or up threads with Control+p for the next and previous posts. You can also use wild cards or Boolean operators in the search terms, which is useful if the term is misspelled, and you can use qualifiers that end in semi-colons like from: or sort: to modify results. For example, to limit your searches to messages posted by a given user, use from: (without quotes and with the colon at the end ofthe word) and then type in the user name. So I could have typed: from: Esther InfoVox sort: newest in the search box to get all messages that I posted with InfoVox in the test and get the results sorted by date order, newest first, instead of by relevancy order, which is what you generally want.
